I am visiting a friend here in Richmond. I don't live in VA. Wanted to take my friend out for a nice birthday dinner. She suggested Hondos; she and her husband had been there once before. How totally disappointing. There were three of us. I had a glass of wine. Each of us had a strip steak, some sort of salad, and a "side". While sippping my wine, we had an uninvited guest in the form of one of those little black bugs divebombing the table...landed on my wine glass, etc. The bug evaded capture; we told the waitress...I think she said "oh my"...then it flew past her onto the breadbasket...she tried to swat it. I think she succeeded because it was gone after that. The bread was kind of...i have been microwaved chewy. I ordered a Cesar salad and onion soup. The waitress asked if I wanted the soup as my "side"..I said sure. What I did not understand was that she would serve it with my steak. My friends ordered what I think were scalloped potatoes for their side. Salads were okay with some less than super fresh lettuce. The soup was okay; potatoes were inedible...just awful. Almost raw. Soupy mess of too much garlic floating in white sauce. My friends ordered their steaks medium rare; I asked for medium. When the steaks came they were served with a flourish and my soup. I was served a steak more rare than my friend's...so the waitress picked them up and switched them for us at the table. This was after three different wait persons carefully placed our steaks in front of each of us. The meat was okay...no seasoning...no real sear. Not what I expected for $47.00. The manager was attentive and stopped by, I was trying not to wreck my friend's birthday. I did not complain then. The entire meal was rushed...I felt like I was in a Chinese Restaurant where the main course appears before you finish the appetizer. Waitress could not wait to clear. I appreciated the little cake and candle...best part of the meal. Never asked if we wanted coffee. So, I wrote on the review thing that came with the check that the meal was awful...sent my friends to the car. I headed out looking for then manager; he was waiting for me. Agreed to reduce bill significantly. Apologized ...was appropriate ...truly, I have never done this before...never....but this was so ridiculous...so bad. I would never go there again. read more

I've taken small groups of my best clients to Hondos on several occasions over the past couple years. Always enjoyed excellent service and food. In my opinion, their steaks are better than Buckheads or Ruth Chris and service is friendlier. Prices are about the same though. Especially enjoy the small private banquet room. read more

The ambience is classy, with just the right amount of lighting, elegance and type and volume of music. The service is polite and timely. The food is amazing. I had a pork chop with a side of house salad and Au Gratin Potatoes. The pork was cooked to perfection. The pan seared Ahi Tuna is to die for. They have a great selection of wines as well. Great date spot for romance and awesome place if you love food. My first porterhouse wasn't cooked correctly so they immediately took it back and ten minutes later....boom! a perfectly cooked new steak was before my eyes and oh so good to my mouth. Sooo...two experiences in one, first and last. My husband and I went for our first time and we will not be returning. Hostess was very sweet but as soon as we were seated it seemed like we were looked down upon for not being dressed to impress. Our attire was business casual as per the "dress code" on other reviews. Our waiter did not even say his name or welcome us to the restaurant, rather a judgmental look. On 2 Sundays I have been to Hondo's for brunch. The atmosphere is elegant and the food is excellent. It is no longer quiet and serene. There are large parties and the customers are quite loud. Simply Horrible! I didn't get the French onion soup I ordered, but instead a salad with French dressing (Waiter mentioned there was an up-charge for soup so I don't understand the mistake). Ordered a Porterhouse...got a T-bone....ordered rare got medium. Normally a porterhouse has more that 2 or 3 bites of tenderloin. Good thing I looked at the check as I was almost charged $24+ for a bottle of wine instead of the $14 dollar glass of wine we had. Fries came cold, should not have ordered them as they were not on the menu-I know why now. And really, a thimble of Bearnaise????? I cannot put a higher review of a restaurant! Ever single time I visit Hondo's I have the most incredible experience. Each time, as I enter, I am greeted by the kindest staff and it just continues through my entire visit! This past Saturday my wife and I ate at Hondo's and had the most impeccable service and meal! Our waiter was beyond phenomenal - we wanted for nothing the entire time! His wine recommendations were outstanding, side suggestions were beyond delicious an, of course, the main dish was served in perfect time with everything else. Man - it was delicious! I went with a NY strip (med-rare!) - it came out perfectly cooked and beyond delicious! The mashed potatoes and sauce were out of this world and I could not have asked for anything better! Additionally, we received a personal visit from the manager - who remembered our names from our previous visit (anniversary) and congratulated us while maintaining the utmost charm. Needless to say, we will be returning (frequently) and recommending this lovely restaurant to everyone we know! I cannot rave about Hondo's enough - each chance we get to eat there is a pleasure and i look forward to many more! read more

I'm sorry to say the only great thing is the wait staff and atmosphere! The previous reviews were correct about the meat. We had "prime rib " and it was full of gristle not spiced well (I don't like my meat spiced) and expensive! After reading the other reviews, you said that the meat was "prime" black angus of which there is no such thing. It is only choice however this meat based on the tenderizer was probably select. I make far better prime choice meat at home and it melts in your mouth. Salads had too much dressing and not very fresh and finally, the Bloody Mary was not spicy, too much ice and less than 8 ounces for $11. read more

I was greatly disappointed. Service slow and painful. Felt like I was at a diner. The salmon was covered with a side that tasted sweet and from a can. The service was slow. Sent back my salmon and it came back with the bottom black burned. Yes I said well on the salmon but that doesn't mean burn it. The vegetable medley was over cooked vegetables soaked in oil. Plus all of this took way too long. I spoke with the manager but things were of such poor quality I am sure he didn't get it. So don't waste your time or money. Goofy name but very traditional steak house atmosphere- some elements, actually on steroids. That would be the fact that it is initially EXTREMELY dark as you are led nearly blind into a very nice, clubby setting. I love the fact that tables are decently spaced so you don't overhear your neighbor's conversation. Our service was superlative- our waiter (from Poland) had a perfect sense of timing, was fully informed on the food and wine offerings and was admirably professional in every sense. The food was good- albeit this was a business meeting so food took a back seat to conversation- but my steak au poivre was perfectly done medium rare and it was checked upon delivery to confirm proper degree of doneness. Thankfully, our terrific waiter ascertained our wine taste well enough to steer us to an excellent choice by the glass which we (repeatedly) enjoyed. I have to say that I was really disappointed by the wine list (bottle selection) because it was incredibly overpriced- even for a steakhouse- most of the selections were 75% over retail, let alone wholesale...and there were few selections that couldn't be found at your local Tptal Wine- no new discoveries or limited access selections that SHOULD characterize the wine program at a steakhouse. We were entertaining very good friends of ours for dinner. The service was pretty good to start with but went downhill during the evening. Hondo's was busy but that should not be an excuse. Our food took a really long time and no one took the time to explain why. Once it did arrive mine was cold and fish isn't good cold. The waitress took it back and said it would return in a minute or 2. Well, as I watched our guests and my husband finish their plates, my finally arrived still cold. They did offer to fix me another plate but that was way too late. Came home hungry. read more

Great service and good ingredients, poorly executed. The seafood trio consists of a pile of great crab meat sitting under shrimp and melted cheese. It should be a crime to do this to great crab meat. Not worth it. Go somewhere else. We had a terrible experience. We arrived on time and were sat expediently. This looks good. ...mind you I'm pumped... this is my first night out since my baby ... We don't see anyone for 20+ minutes... she takes our drink order... we do not see her again for 15 minutes. We order appetizers. It arrives quickly (crab cakes) mostly crab, it tastes OK. I immediately ask for crackers or bread in place of the bits of lettuce it was served with. We wait. Wait. Wait. Wait. Wait.... for 10+ minutes.... just to flag her down and ask for crackers. She seems annoyed :(. We wait. Wait. Wait.wait.wait.wait.wait.wait.... finally I start eating the lettuce. And it tastes so so so bad. Like dirt. The salads we ate later were great, so I'm not sure why that lettuce was so gross. Wait.wait.wait. FINALLY, the freaking crackers... along with some, apparently, complimentary, comes standard, every table gets it... bread... this is almost an hour into our meal and at this point cold crab cakes! !! Insane. It took 30+ minutes for our food to arrive. And my steak was over done. The lady that asked me to inspect my steak, told me to "bring it to my servers attention" ....yeah right. Shes hopeless. I eat it. Its not stellar. Its not even great... its good though. I've made far better. I'm quite sure everyone could make a better baked potato. It was sitting in the window so long. The butter turned it into a potato soaked in greasy liquid. C'MON!?! So the manager did stop by as the food arrived. He was friendly but didn't do enough to make us happy. ($20discount) I would have rather received another dining experience. Because that's what I came for. Or even a new steak. My boyfriend didn't even touch his steak. This is my favorite steakhouse. The cuts of beef are USDA Prime beef and cooked perfectly. It is served with a delicious salad and a potato dish. Their desserts are wonderful as well, such as the chocolate moose and raspberry sorbet. Also their brunch on sundays are the BEST! They have a carving station with ham, prime rib, and they make omelets made to order. There is also a number of prepared foods to choose from such as, smoked salmon, gnocchi, eggs many different ways, fresh fruit, and much much more. This place is awesome! read more
