Stoped by to pick up food on the way home after work. Ordered orange chicken with steamed rice to go.. on the seven minute drive home when I got to the hotel everything was stuck together in one big clump. All of the breading came off of the chicken, and it was slimy and almost felt greasy. I have struggled finding a good Chinese restaurant in Gladstone, oregon city area and this is Absolutely my new favorite place. Staff was very nice, food served quickly. The hot and sour soup was very good although as always wish it had more bamboo and some pork but even though excellent flavor and thickness. The rest of my meal, the #6 was also excellent. Zero Stars (if possible) This was, to me, one of the worst examples of "Chinese Food" I've ever tasted. It was Super Bowl Sunday, about half-time, that my wive and I dined here. The setting (ambiance) was totally void of any charm. We were the only ones, a possible harbinger. My wife and I ordered the Family Dinner "A". First, the tea was luke-warm and, like the dishes to follow, without flavor. We both ordered Hot & Sour Soup, more a thick ooze with pepper, and definitely not hot. Next, I tried the Pork Fried Rice. It had been burned and definitely tasted it. No amount of the thin, watery "plum sauce" could hide its burned flavor. Next, the Sweet & Sour Pork, sort of a "wrap" with an inch of batter on each piece, and totally without flavor. Actually, the "pork" tasted as though it came from a tin. The Fried Shrimp were also coated in a thick layer of dough and dropped into a fryer. The results were as non-tasting the General Tsao's "chicken". Honestly, I couldn't tell what it was. I cut one of these golf-ball sized dough balls in half and found a piece of, well, I'm not sure. Tasting the small piece of something, separately, still didn't reveal what it was. The only thing barely eatable was the Chow Mein, though the sauce was as thick as the Sweet & Sour Soup. Hmm. Even the Fortune Cookies were over-baked. The service, with three servers visible, was average, considering we were the only customers. To conclude, please, stay away from this mis-nommer of a Chinese Restaurant. If you think about what makes for really good Chinese food - price, service, options, extras, taste, location. If you order online the only options are price, and taste really. I like how the food is packaged in white boxes not a styrofoam container and sauces are in individual containers. You really have to enjoy their food like most Chinese restaurants the day you order cause I'm not sure why next day fried rice becomes inedible. You know what I mean? I ordered a lot of fried things (a big no no) fried shrimp in the no. 8 combo dinner with Pork fried rice, sweet and sour pork and fried won ton. The cashew chicken was pretty tasty although I wonder was that slight aftertaste could be. I guess it was fine. Absolutely the worst food I've ever had. The breading on the shrimp, Sweet and sour chicken, and egg roll were almost like an orange ish yellow color and tasted awful. I really want to like this place. The staff is friendly, the service is prompt, the menu covers most of the bases. The hot and sour soup has more of a peppery finish than traditionally prepared. I think I like it like that, it really is memorable (more black pepper than Hunan pepper). If all I wanted was a large soup to take our, this is where I would go. The wife had the cashew chicken. I tried one piece and it came off a bit off, I'm not sure if it was a little underdone or past it's best by date. I didn't want to alarm her and she didn't find it objectionable so perhaps it was just the odd piece I had. I had the Mongolian beef. I liked the flavors and the mix of veggies but was put off a bit by the oily mouth feel. It's so creamy and warm even the wettest days get bright and toasty while eating here the staff is always friendly and the lunch specials can't be beat as low as $6.75 and up gets you the pick of 3 dishes. Plus complimentary hot tea and soup when you dine in. We've tried just about everything on the menu and everything always comes out hot and fresh, Great for lunch even better for dinner $11.50 and up gets you family style dinner with up to 6 entrees I love family style meals at restaurants and the way they have the lazy Susan set up in the table makes passing dishes so easy, like sitting at home but you don't have to clear the table and do dishes later. It is so hard to find a decent place to get Chinese food these days. It isn't hard to find a Chinese restaurant, there are half a dozen within 10 minutes of my house. But this is the only one I go back to because it is the only one that actually tastes fresh. So many Chinese places use what is obviously all pre made food. The breaded chicken all looks the same for general tso chicken, sweet and sour, and so on. Clearly it all comes in frozen, chucked in the fryer and covered in whatever generic, store bought sauce you ordered. I won't say Hong Kong 97 doesn't get pre made food, because I don't know. But most of what I order tastes fresher and of higher quality than any of their local competitors, it isn't even close. I usually get the General Tso chicken or Kung Pao chicken. The generals chicken is crispy and coated in just the right amount of sauce to highlight the dish not hide it. My Kung Pao chicken has chicken in it! I have tried so many Chinese places that I can hardly find any chicken in my chicken dishes! What!? Long story short. This isn't a five star pan Asian fusion restaurant, but it is a very solid neighborhood Chinese restaurant in a world of barely edible imitators. read more

We enjoyed our first visit here. The waitress was very accommodating in helping us get the combination we wanted. The lemon chicken was a large lightly breaded chicken breast sliced. They asked for a name when I called in but they were called the last 4 of your phone number. Didn't say that was being used . No one let you know how this lack of a system worked. You couldn't hear her calling the names outside in the line. I was at the back of the line but I got my food before the other 10 people waiting. The regulars in line said this was normal & most times the food was stone cold because the waited in line so long. I thought HK was closed too because nobody answered but then a nice lady called me back and said they were open! Ordered through uber eats because it's raining, can't dine in and was craving Chinese food. Honestly this place surprised me, it's actually pretty good. I kept it safe so ordered sweet and sour shrimp, salt and pepper shrimp, gyoza, string beans and chicken fried rice. Nothing was too oily or over saucy like most Chinese places. Somewhat slow service but expected from a small Chinese restaurant (we sat on the bar side). Soup was lukewarm and although they give you a ton of food it was hardly edible. Menu stated certain veggies were included in a dish (carrots, green peppers, mushrooms onion) and you say please not to include a few of those and the waitress said okay no problem. But when the dish comes out it has the veggies removed that we didn't want but other veggies like water chestnuts and bamboo shoots added that were not listed on the menu and 75% of the dish was those veggies. When asked the waitress she said "you should've said no to those as well". Well if there were listed in the ingredients on the menu then we would've asked not to include those. I heard they made killer drinks here so a friend and I stopped by for cocktails in the lounge on Friday night. You could tell the few people in the matchboxed sized lounge area were regulars because they all looked at us like we were the new kids walking onto the playground. So okay, the place lacks much in decor and atmosphere...unless of course you're into video poker machines and dated chinese knick knacks. But what they lack in decor and atmosphere, they make up for in value. The waitress was Jenny-on-the-spot to take our order and even recommended a drink for my friend who insisted she didn't 'really' want a cocktail - try the Kinky Sex on the Beach with a Blanket. It was like an alcoholic Italian Iced Soda. The price for this yummy concoction and a Long Island Iced Tea was only $12.50! Plus they had an appetizer special that included crab cakes, BBQ pork, and pot stickers for just $2.95. My family and I went here for lunch, we ordered off the build your own lunch for either 6.95 or 7.95 depending on what main dish you pick. Wow!!! They good was excellent tasted fresh, and lots of it, had to take food home. normally in a Chinese restaurants they all taste the same,along with the MSG I did not taste that at all in my food.
