Hong Kong Chef is a great little place my best friend had us visit on our way home from school (We commute from CSULB back to Whittier). We've eaten there about 5 times or so now, and we both love it so much. He digs the Shrimp Pan-Fried Noodle and I'm been going through the menu trying a new thing each and every time. I have been eating at the Hong Kong chef since the late 80s/early 90s and the food is always delicious!!! It is a very small restaurant, that has never updated a thing , which I love! I love the nostalgia, the familiar smells coming from the kitchen. I love the swishing sound the hot wok makes and gentle taping of the metal. I love the hot jasmine tea, and fried rice. The bbq egg and pork is a must have. It is an omelette stuffed full of chaShu pork and topped with a delicious salty brown sauce. Love their pork chops with spicy salt, love their beef and broccoli, love the egg drop soup and chow main noodles! When I visit LA, this is on my top 3 places to visit!!!! Just came here today ... first I didn't realize you sit in and order and pay after when ur done like any other sit in restaurant. Reason why is because nobody greeted me when I came in ..in fact I happen to come during the chefs/owner/servers lunch time as they where all eating together in the front table as you come in so when I was looking at their menu they didn't ask for here or to go so I figured you order/pay first and then sit. The food was done fast but it was annoying that they brought everything to me in bags and then once I told them it was for here the waitress keeps sitting and eating dosent bother to bring me the tea everyone gets or soup ... when it came to the food however NO GOOD no flavor. I ordered the almond chicken hardly any chicken or almonds mainly was big chunky pieces of carrots and celery.. also ordered the chicken low main ... same issue absolutely no flavor whatsoever and barely any chicken..egg rolls where huge greasy and not good either...all together spend $20.... The pork was notably freezer burned and rubbery; the beef broccoli was freakishly sweet (MSG); and the Kung Pao chicken was more like chow mein with red peppers. When it comes hole in the wall places, this is the holiest of holes in the wall. It's really small, almost unnoticeable, and it screams mom-and-pop-business right when you walk in. But damn... Hong Kong Chef does their Chinese food right. Like many Chinese eateries, they have a secret menu and the trick is really knowing what to order. My mom doesn't even look at the menu. She just straight up rattles off what she wants and somehow these food exists even though they're not on the menu. Here's some the stuff that I highlyyyy recommend: Their spicy salt shrimp dish - seriouslyyyy bomb (you could tell by the number of 'y's' I put in 'seriously'). I could keep eating these all day. The tofu cooked Szechuan-style - though I wished it were spicier, this dish is great for combining it with your rice. Also, this place is cashhh money only. But just wait until you see the check. I have been coming here to eat for about 15 years and will continue to until the day i die or they close, which ever comes first. Sure, the place is small and still has the same Everything (tables, decor, menus, etc.) but the food has also not changed and continues to be great. There is a small language barrier when ordering (Chinese female owner) but just be patient and you will be rewarded with great tasting Chinese food. Great hole in the wall restaurant. You would never even know this place is here. A coworker of mine took me here for lunch one day and I was surprised that I had never eaten here before. It is on Lakewood Right next to the old 50s McDonald's. It is a small restaurant with limited seating so there is no guarantee that you will have a table during lunch time. My favorite dish there is the Hot Rock Cod with sweet & sour sauce. Be aware that the portions are pretty big, so if you're not a big eater I wouldn't recommend getting the Rock Cod if you're eating alone. Also Check out the BBQ Pork Fried Rice. read more

My auntie brought me here for some soup on a rainy day. This little hole in the wall is awesome! It doesn't look like much with cheap chairs and tables but the food is cheap, fresh, clean and good. Glad I checked yelp for somewhere local. It's pretty hard to find if you're driving I have lived in this area my whole life and passed it on my way to the mall so many times.
