Wow, I can't believe my last review of Hong Kong Express was way back in 2007. This definitely is one of the best take out places to go. The folks working there are friendly and they give a pretty good sized portions. There is never a shortage in their food offerings because they're always filling up the trays with newly fresh cooked food. The orange chicken remains to be a favorite. It's especially great when it is served straight out of the kitchen - crispy and sweet :). The teriyaki chicken, egg rolls, egg foo young, spare ribs are other great items when served hot :). There are several veggie options. I recently tried their eggplants with tofu. I haven't had this before but it's a nice vegetarian option. Another veggie option is their mixed vegetable options. The folks used to let us choose the mixed vegetables instead of getting the fried rice or the chow mein. I haven't tried choosing the mixed vegetables over the rice and chow mein recently so I'm not sure if they still do that but I hope they do because it's a great healthy option :). There is also a green bean dish but their is some ground pork mixed in and so it is not a purely vegetarian dish. Lastly they make an awesome wonton soup. The wontons have a ground pork filling. While service is fast and efficient, the quality of the food is quite inconsistent. All combo plates come with chow mein, fried rice, or half and half. I really like their chow mein--flavorful, yet not too salty with some cabbage and onions mixed in. I usually just get chow mein as my side, since sometimes the rice can be dry. Food: Portions are very generous. They fill the box completely! - Orange Chicken - Ranges from huge to smaller bite-sized pieces. On some days, the chicken is moist and flavorful, while other days the meat is dry, and the batter coating is hard, as though it has been dried out from the heat lamps. - Beef Broccoli - Large pieces of broccoli with beef. The beef is often quite chewy. - Green beans with Chicken - Can be fresh and crisp or soggy and shriveled depending on the day. This is the kind of good & cheap Chinese food I love! I call it 'Mall Chinese Food' - and I mean it in a good way :) Lots of choices, ready when you get there, big filling portions and good. Sometimes that's exactly what you want! It has a buffet steam table with several delicious entrees to choose from plus chow mein & fried rice. My son and I both got the 2 entree plate with rice & noodles. I had Mushroom Chicken & Orange Chicken; he had Spicy Chicken & Sweet and Sour Pork. I sampled all 4 dishes and they were great but my favorite was the Mushroom Chicken - Yummy!! Ordering Tip #1: Get the 2 entree with half noodles/half rice and you will be full for the rest of the day. We ate our meals there and the dining area is clean but sparse. No condiments or napkins on the tables and you take your tray to a table cafeteria style. I saw complaints here about the staff; while not chit-chatty they were not rude at all. The lady that came out to take care of the catering customers was friendly and professional. Ordering Tip #2: They don't take cards so bring cash or else you will need to use the atm. While we were there several people came in to pick up catering orders and they seemed to be returning customers. I love the won ton soup from this place! Never had any issues with the service or the Wonton Soup. They usually take a bit longer to get this out but when you get it it's piping hot and sooo good! The veggies are always sooo soft and the broth is delicious! Once you're done with the soup you have all the garlic at the bottom but it's worth it! What happened to this restaurant? Decided to eat here and it was such a disappointment. Food was bland, cold and unappetizing. The cha sui was just red colored meat. The food is served from a steam table and never saw any steam. No wonder the food was cold. It was borderline under correct temperature. May even be a health violation. Whenever I'm attending a potluck, I always order a half tray of the garlic chicken ($32, and they stack a huge mound of wings in that half tray, I think about 45 wings total). The chicken stays crispy for a really long time, much longer than it will take for everyone to gobble these things up once they get a whiff of that mouth-watering aroma. I've been told that this specific Hong Kong Express is the only location which has this particular recipe. Most of their other fare is average. They say their orange chicken is their most popular dish, but it seemed pretty average to me. Besides the garlic chicken, their green beans with chicken and their eggplant are probably their two best dishes. And they give you a lot. If you order a combo plate, your clam-shell container will be literally bursting at the sides with food. If I'm stuck with trying to come up with a quick dinner for the family, a three item combo is usually enough to feed three of us (I get just the chow mein, no fried rice). This Hong Kong Express is located in a mini-mall on the northeast corner of Western Ave and Artesia Blvd, across the street from Marukai. There's an Albertsons as the anchor store, and HKE is right by a Papa John's Pizza and a Chipotle. Cash-only, so make sure to bring enough. I went there this afternoon from Redondo Beach. It's good food at a reasonable price. However, today the food was usual but the service was so bad that I will think twice next time. There were 2 Asian females early 20s that had a chip on their shoulder. Not only with me but there were 2 African American ladies that seemed like a mom and daughter. They were nice and the girls gave them the rudest service Ive seen in a while. On my drive from Redondo I think I passed 3 or 4 other restaurants that would be their competition. Lately the hot and sour soup is not the same consistency as I have experienced it before, that I'm to the point where I will ask if they can make a fresh batch--- hesitance to do so today. It looked almost orange yellow. One hour before closing...consistency way too thick with too much egg, I didn't order an egg drop soup and hardly any mushrooms some tofu. There are only two Chinese fastfood restaurants I hit up on a regular basis: Wok California, and this place. As is the case with a lot of these cafeteria style restaurants, the freshness (and therefore the quality) of dishes is subject to the time at which you come in. If you come in during or on the tail end of lunch rush, everything's fresh. If you come in at 3-4pm, you might find you don't enjoy some of the chicken dishes quite as much. The reason for a 4-star review, and the reason I come here instead of ordering from a more traditional Chinese restaurant while I'm in the ABC area, is the BBQ pork. Maybe it's the sauce, maybe it's the pre-seasoning before the roast, but whatever they're doing is the right thing to be doing. Their chow mein is excellent in texture, and the flavor is almost right, but a little light on the sodium.
