    The table spread

This place has an nostalgic Chinese-American restaurant atmosphere. The prices are fair and decent, very expected. The service was good and the staff at the counter were nice and helpful. I settled for the orange chicken (Chef Special), hot and sour soup, and an order of 6 vegetable egg rolls. The flavors were good, I only wish I had some type of grilled vegetables on the side with my dish. It's not over the top Chinese food but very simple, and a fulfilling meal.

Ordered a chicken chow mein dish with noodles, but instead of noodles we got bean sprouts instead. Very deceiving and honestly a weird joke to play with first time customers. First and last time I will be ordering here

Hong Kong Restaurant has been a Hillcrest staple for decades. Back in the day, as far back as the late 90s, this dive was one of the #1 spots to hit up for indoor late night eats with table service after clubbing or partying at bars. They used to stay open at least until 4 AM and possibly even later. Fast forward to midnight on November 30, 2024. DJ and I came in for a late-night dinner (Although their website says that they are open until 3am everyday, they keep those hours only on Fridays and Saturdays. They usually close at 1 AM.). We were surprised to find the venue completely renovated and the dining room practically empty. This place used to be filled with regular owls. I did like the new colourful wall print. Not sure if the counter and kitchen area were also re-done, though, as it still looked old. Hong Kong was never known for being pristine, but while sitting at our booth, DJ saw a rodent run behind the counter, so cleanliness is probably an issue in the work area. Eek. This place has definitely gone downhill. Although they still offer dine in, service is pretty much non-existent. No more table service, you must place your orders at the counter and reusable tableware is nowhere to be found. Food is served in to-go containers and you are given plastic utensils to eat. I asked for water and was told that I could buy a bottle of water or be given a disposable plastic cup of ice. WOW. If they are going to be that super cheap, then they should lower their prices! Below are what we ordered: Crispy Beef ($19.95) - Good, but not sure that it was worth the steep price. Vegetable Chow Fun Dry ($17.20) - We paid the same price for Shrimp, but they assured us that they would pack in the veggies to make up for the price. I think we got ripped off. Fresh Egg Plant in Plum Sauce ($10.95) - OK. Came in again after midnight/early morning of the 3rd of February. I asked if the Beef Chow Fun Dry came with vegetables. The front counter guy couldn't really tell me. He was guessing, "bell peppers, bean sprouts, a little bit of carrot..." I asked if there would be broccoli. For an extra $5. What?? I don't think so. I opted for the standard, but he told me that he asked the kitchen to add extra veggies. Nope, in fact, the dish was completely absent of vegetables! Such a FAIL!! DJ didn't order anything this time because after our visit in November, he said that "they suck." It's clear to me now why Hong Kong Restaurant no longer attracts a crowd. Their food is overpriced, they cheaply run the place like a fast-food joint, and service is horrible.

I was terrified of my order after reading the reviews for this place (that I should have read before hand). The inside is true like everyone says idk who would choose to dine in there but it seems like a bleak life. I got orange chicken, green beans in garlic sauce, and two buns. Orange chicken was actually okay. Not amazing but fine The green beans were spicy and cooked but did not come in a garlic sauce? I had to make my own. The buns were hard as rocks which sucked bc the meat inside them was quite good. All in all. Let this place die out or get some actual love in it. Will not order again

If you're looking for an upscale, high end Chinese food place, this is not the place for you. It's a bit run down, and definitely not a super nice restaurant BUT, the food is incredible. You really can't beat the prices either. If you go for the lunch special, you get soup and a bowl of rice (hugggeee bowl by the way) with your entree. I got the Chow fun and orange chicken and the flavors are insane. I also am still working through the leftovers!

My re-re-review of what was my favorite Chinese place in San Diego. The back story So during 2020, the original place was sold. I came in after they remodeled that place. Didn't really like the vibe and it took an hour to get food for dine in. I got my go to order, hot and sour soup and house special shrimp. I didn't like it and left after a few bites. I posted an updated review. The owners DM'ed me and offered to have me come back and try it again after sorting out some cooking issues and recipes. They even offered it free. I came back but did not bring up the review and offer for a free meal because that's not why I updated the review. They fixed the soup but they got a 1 stat review. The New It was Thanksgiving night and the 3 restaurants I searched on yelp, that were listed as open were closed. I turned to a rival food delivery app and saw Hong Kong open. I placed an order for pick up and headed over. When I got there it was empty, which was a far cry from the past. My order needed another 5 minutes and then it was walked out to me. The server was nice and told me there were chopsticks already in the bag. Looking around they got rid of some of the annoyances that were implemented. I got home and was ready for the moment of truth. I cracked the soup open and it actually looked like the old version. I noticed that there were no wonton chips included. I don't know if they still come with it, or if that was dropped. The soup was really good. I give kudos to them for improving it. Like I will come back just for the soup. I opened up the House Special Shrimp and was immediately let down. I included a side by side comparison picture so you can see the old style versus the new. It's night and day different. It was not bad, it just wouldn't be anything I would get again. My review coming up to 3 stars may not read great to some, but it was 1 star for being bad previously. The hot and sour soup is really good. The the House Special shrimp is not bad, it's just nothing I'll get again. I'll be back now that things have improved. My biggest critique of this updated place was that they bought it and kept the name, menu and replaced the staff and recipes. It's been a couple of years now and I'm sure the community has adjusted to the changes. Now I just think they need to highlight maybe their new specialities instead of using the ones that made the original HK popular late at night

Ordered delivery via Fantuan, it was delivered 30 min before the expected time, yeah! Food not spectacular but adequate as expected for a neighborhood diner. Beef with bell pepper ok, beef relatively tender, but excessive powder black pepper overall. Chicken with bean sprout, egg plant both adequate. Each entre came with a small white rice

HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE! WRONG ORDER! ENTITLED CASHIER! MEANINGLESS MANAGER! HORRIBLE OWNER! My family and I went to grab some food to-go on Tuesday Oct 21st around 10:50pm, apparently the Asian lady that was taking the order in the counter didn't hear English well so her co-worker, Michyak, jumped to help her. However, not only Michyak had a horrible attitude toward us but also have had an argument with some other customer by the phone while we were ordering. VERY TENSE AND UNPLEASENT MOMENT! Michyak showed his anger while we were choosing our food by giving us a hostile treatment and kept correcting us about dishes' names and the way they are prepared, plus, he made clear that there are no refunds; therefore, pretty much he was making crystal-clear statements that the restaurant is a "take-it-or-leave-it" establishment, and they do what they want and how they want in terms of food and services. Of course, we said nothing, and went straight home because we didn't want to create a scene out of it. Once at home, we noticed that instead of regular Chicken Wings they gave us Boneless Chicken Wings, and instead Chicken with Broccoli they gave us Beef with Broccoli. We went back to the restaurant to return the food. All Michyak's answers were negative, not providing any solutions. He kept saying that his manager is sleeping and if we want the refund, we had to come back next day from 11am to 5pm to talk to the manager. WE LEFT THE FOOD RIGHT THERE IN THE COUNTER because it wasn't what we ordered, and Michyak received it. Next day, we went back to the restaurant and talked to Henry, the manager, who called Mohammed, the owner, 3 times; they both said they don't believe us. These two scammers told us to contact and sue our bank for the refund. THEY STOLE OUR MONEY, because we didn't want to take the order that was completely wrong, and they didn't want to give us the money back either. This place is a complete danger for customers in Hillcrest and IT SHOULDN'T BE IN BUSINESS. WATCHOUT CITY OF SAN DIEGO because this place hires young foreigners that are not fluent in the language who end up arguing with customers and charging the clientele for food they don't receive. We'll be filing a claim to the California Department of Consumer Affairs (DCA) www.dca.ca.gov. PAY ATTENTION HILLCREST BUSINESS ASSOCIATION, this place conducts business not in good faith but with wrongdoings. IT IS A TOTAL SCAM.

They have a super easy online ordering system right at the table which makes things convenient. We ordered the spicy lamb biang biang noodles and the non-spicy beef pulled noodles, and both had the perfect chew and incredible flavor. We also ordered the garlic green beans, but they came out so late that we were already completely full from the noodles, so we took them to go. Thank god we did, because they turned out to be pretty salty on their own and really needed to be paired with white rice at home. Overall, an amazing spot for authentic noodles! Something I didn't love though, you order and pay through the online menu. Considering you leave a tip I don't fully understand how it works when we did this whole process ourselves. I also noticed other tables getting plates and bowls which we had to ask for. Overall, I felt the servers weren't too friendly either and seemed to rush through our table despite them standing around not seeming too busy. The food was excellent though! The soup had a great spice to it and super flavorful. The beef and onion was so juicy and addictive, the green beans were good too and had a slight kick to them.

I was born and raised in LA, so I've had a lot of Chinese food growing up, and I wasn't expecting to be this surprised--but I really was. I ordered the black bean eggplant and the salt and pepper chicken wings. The wings are what they're known for, but I have to start with the eggplant because it completely caught me off guard. It wasn't mushy at all--crispy on the outside, perfectly cooked on the inside, and coated in sauce without losing its texture. Every bite had depth and balance, not just saltiness. I actually meant to start with the wings, but the eggplant was so good I ended up eating half of it before even getting to them. By that point I was already getting full, but I still made sure to finish the wings--and I'm honestly excited to take the rest of the eggplant home as leftovers. By the time I got to the wings, I understood why they're popular--crispy, flavorful, and super satisfying--but what stood out to me was how both dishes complemented each other. One rich and layered, the other crisp and bright. I never got tired of eating, which honestly says a lot. I even told the staff how much I enjoyed the food and they thought I was joking, but I meant every word in saying I thought it was comparable, if not better then the food I've had in Chinatown in LA. Really glad I came here and the next time I have a chance to come back down to SD I definitely will come back here and that's not negotiable for me

It was empty coming in around 5:30pm on a Friday, but it soon filled to capacity in the next hour. So coming into it, we thought we would choose between Menu A and Menu B. Afterwards, we thought it was AYCE on the menu of your choice + the side buffet where there are limited selections of sides and refrigerated drinks. We ordered orange chicken, Chinese style fish and something else. Again, this was on the thought that we could order more than one item on our selected menu. So imagine our surprise when the bill was nearly $100 for two people? It was a misunderstanding. However, the initial staff gentlemen was completely rude about it and ignored us as we sought to understand. Finally, a second female server came and heard our concerns regarding the false advertisement and unclear messaging. She was able to provide us the price we thought this was for based on Menu selection. All in all - I don't recommend the AYCE option. I think it would be important to make a distinction that AYCE clearly on the menu and at the front - AYCE means each individual selects ONE entree (which is a one small portion) and the AYCE component of the deal is ONLY for the side buffet.

The menu said the family meals were meant for parties of 8, but let me tell you. We ate until we were hurting and there was still a ton of leftovers. Those meals can easily serve a dozen people in my opinion which makes them even more of a great deal. If you've got a large party, this is a fantastic option to make sure everyone eats their fill. With that said, all the food was delicious. Hot and fresh from the kitchen, each dish with its own unique flavor and textures. We ran the gamut of flavors over our meal and it's hard to really point to one singular dish that was my favorite. After having almost 10 different dishes, I can confidently say that they will have something you will really enjoy. The restaurant itself is a bit no frills. But that's fine. They're putting their time in to food, not ambiance and I am totally down with that. Service is great. We were in a back corner, but we never felt ignored nor overly watched over. We were able to sit down and enjoy our meal at our own speed. My only 'gripe' with the restaurant is that the restroom is actually outside and shared with the other businesses in the complex. And that bathroom isn't the best maintained. I'm assuming that's up to the property management and not the restaurant (or other businesses) so I'm not dinging my review, but just keep that in mind. Might be best to try & hold it if you can. Ultimately, Golden Chopsticks really knocked it out of the park and caught me so off guard. I am so glad we came here on a bit of a whim.
