This place was so old I always think about it when I'm craving sushi because it's like a giant bowl of sushi that you can customize to your liking and they have old portions for the price! If you don't like raw fish they have options for cooked meats as well. read more

We've bought take-out bowls here for the last two years, and have been very pleased with the experience. Suddenly, server's faces have changed, prices have increased, bowls have become smaller, and the quantity & quality of servings has diminished. Growing up next to a Japanese-Hawaiian family sure made me appreciate Hawaiian food before it exploded. When it did become trendy on the West Coast, I indulged, and have probably been to dozens of different poke restaurants by now. I also worked in a Hawaiian restaurant for some time and I often make Poke for my family at home. Poke is raw and safe to consume. Poke is healthy: low in calories and fat, rich in protein and omega-3 fatty acids. Poke is filling, thanks to fish being a very lean meat. (And yes, gym rats, it's also paleo.) I learned from my neighbor's family that "poke"--pronounced poh-KAY, fyi--is just Hawaiian for "to slice," but it is traditionally cubed up raw fish (most commonly Tuna) marinated in a soy and sesame oil sauce, with chopped green onions, sweet (maui) onions, and inamona (salt roasted kukui nuts). All served over a bed of white rice. Poke is hard to screw up and what Honolulu's strengths are is in their friendly service, their high-quality fish (fresh as you can get in CO), and their good variety of toppings. This place doesn't do traditional Hawaiian-style Poke, though, which is fine, because scarcely any place outside of the islands does. This place serves California-style (or "mainland-style") Poke. So Honolulu Poke Bar allows you to pick your own adventure: a rice (brown or white) or veggie salad base, they let you have scoops of different kinds of protein (seafood, land meats, cooked, raw) at different price points, multiple vegetable mix-ins, a variety of soy ("shoyu") and non-shoyu marinades, a scoop of salad, and unlimited toppings. If it's your first-time, I recommend tuna, salmon, and scallops with their house sauce, green onions, white onions, crab or squid salad, mango, cucumber, and fried onions. Don't overwhelm the fish with too many toppings, or you'll ruin the integrity of the dish. The fish is good, so let it shine. (Side note: the brown rice is not disgustingly dry like most, so give it a try even if you hate brown rice!) Personally, as someone who's made Poke professionally and at home, I think that some of the toppings are a little questionable. Like, cheese, blueberries, and tomatoes aren't things that really go well with raw fish. Fruit can belong in poke, but it should be fruit with flesh like pit fruits, not overly juicy fruits like berries and tomatoes. I also think that having things like chicken and beef distract from what poke is supposed to be: seafood. I think they need to have waaaay more explanatory signs than they currently do for first-timers, as most will not know what "shoyu" or "masago" are. 3.75/5 stars. Friendly service, great seafood quality, fresh ingredients, and nice-if-questionable toppings selection. If they train their staff to be more knowledgeable, add explanatory signs, and get rid of certain things that really don't belong in this sort of cuisine, that would be good. That said, there is unfortunately not much that distinguishes Honolulu from most other California-style, build-your-own Poke bowl establishments I have been to. Especially when their sauces, while serviceable, are not up to par to other poke restaurants I've visited nor do they taste homemade. That is a huge detriment given that saucemaking, other than rice and the land meats, is the one of the only things they have to cook! Other recommendations: Aloha Coffee & Grill in Fort Collins, for some traditional Hawaiian dishes beyond just Poke. Thai Thai'm for some delicious and authentic Thai food. If you're willing to make the drive, New Saigon is also excellent. read more

New to Fort Collins, Colorado we tried Tokyo Joe's shortly after moving here. We enjoy it, great place for a quick healthy dish. Honolulu blows that place out of the water. There are so many choices, everything is fresh, clean, and simple. I had the spicy tuna and salmon on a bed of brown rice. This place is awesome! It's a great option for anyone looking for a healthy, clean, fresh dining option. We went for lunch and made medium bowls. There is a great variety in toppings and pretty much everything outside of the scoops of protein is unlimited. Service was friendly and the place was pretty clean. I had half brown rice, half mixed greens as my base. One thing to make note of is that some of the pre-made toppers (I.e. the seaweed salad topper) has gluten in it - so just ask if this is a concern for you! All other ingredients are fresh and plain. Last week though, I had my usual (which was great) and my usual drink (Calpis) which was disappointing. I was born and raised in Hawaii, whenever I go back home to visit, I'll eat 4-5 poke bowls a week (it's my favorite food!) When I moved to Fort Collins back in 2011, I was pretty sad that we didn't have any options for poke or authentic Japanese ramen. I was thrilled when I saw an ad for Honolulu Poke Bar in HotSpots and had to stop by! The interior is spacious and clean, with friendly customer service. There were most of the traditional toppings that I'm used to, and many other toppings that aren't quite traditional but definitely appeals to the western palate (such as corn, avocado, a shoyru/mustard dressing, and much more). I got a kid sized bowl (for under $6, it filled me up!) with white rice (which was made fresh with a fluffy texture), salmon, the spicy aoili, green onions, onions, masago roe, and tempura crunchies and it was delicious. It just brought me back home for a moment. Sure, the fish wasn't fresh caught that morning, but it was still great quality and I'm so happy that this gem exists in Fort Collins. This is the only Hawaiian poke that we have ever had, though we are very versed in sushi, sashimi, and related Japanese dishes like chirashi. We've gone twice in two weeks since we discovered it - so you can imagine that we like it a lot. If you want something fresh, less expensive then a sushi bar, and a little bit different then this is definitely for you. Come expecting to be briefly educated on a slightly complicated counter ordering experience, but I think that's probably the nature of poke. I don't remember the exact order, but choose your protein, what kind of green, salads, and mix ins which are expertly and deftly prepared. In my case it's raw fish all the way, squid salad, seaweed salad, and veggies that are crunchy like edamame and raw corn. A young man from Hawaii suggested for my sauce a blend of two: spicy aoli, and sweet chili- fantastic! I had no idea what to get, so the lady behind the counter offered some fantastic suggestions and I ended up with the most flavorful bowl of spicy salmon and tuna I've ever tasted! They also have gluten free soy sauce by request. All in our party were satisfied with our meals and felt we got A LOT of food for the price (and we ordered the small bowls!) I found this place working at Centerra over the summer. I fell head over heels for the poke bowl. I can't readily afford sushi as a college student, but for $10 I got sushi grade fish, fresh rice, incredible sauce, and a load of other goodies making it well worth the money. Soon I started taking my boyfriend here and we've made it our once a week tradition to trek down here from Greeley. With the quarantine going on, it's honestly what I miss most. First and foremost, the fish is fresh and good quality...maybe not super top quality, but definitely more than acceptable. The service was helpful and friendly and the restaurant was clean and modern. My only slight gripe is that I didn't care for any of the side salad options that come with the bowl (squid, imitation crab, or seaweed) so I wish they had a cucumber sunomono or little Asian salad as an option. Ive come here often but recently it feels like it's getting more expensive for the smallest amount of food. I usually get a medium and that comes with three scoops of meat. It's more like three tablespoons of meat. They serve the least amount possible it seems. And if you ask for extra meat they say it's an extra charge. You're already paying 13 dollars for a bowl of rice and a few pieces of fish. On top of that they expect a 15% tip for not only the smallest amount of food but also not very friendly customer service. Deeply saddens by this but I'll have to take my business elsewhere, to get more bang for my buck. read more
