This bakery has an interesting selection of pastries and desserts. My wife loves the place and I've come to appreciate this place. I've had a sampling of some of the refrigerated desserts, but they are as delightful and tasty as they look. They take special pride in their products because I'm never disappointed but considering that I usually only get 1/2 of it. That way, we keep our weight/sugar as our doctors tell us to, but otherwise we'd be enjoying it way more than we should. I don't even want to look at the other refrigerated case of cakes, as with only two seniors and a few family gatherings, little justification to buy a whole one. Their baked goods looked pretty darn good, as we picked a baked blueberry item, a toasted item that I felt looked like a huge cinnamon toast wedge, and baked bread ring that looked good, but our good neighbors got that treat. I know I've given a box of their pastries to a friend's office and the staff raved about the pastries. If you're in the Kam Shopping Center, it might be worth checking out what they've put out that day in the cases, it might be something worth trying. read more

This is the best bakery to get cute cakes ready to go. They have both fruit topped cakes which are beautiful as well as cartoonish dogs/cats/bears that are perfect for a birthday cake. They can also personalize the cake with a chocolate plaque that can fit a short message or name. The cake itself is delicious, not too sweet and the frosting is fluffy and not overly sweet either. I have tried both the chocolate and vanilla and both are great! They have always had a great selection but I think you can call ahead to order specific sizes and reserve them. Stuff is good and cake is yummy, but don't bother coming at 7 when they open. None of the fresh baked goods are ever out, always behind the counter. Takes them about 1/2 hour or an hour to get pastries out depending on whether there is one or 2 ladies working behind the counter, and if the one is busy making coffee orders. Only 1 lady today. See people come in and walk out all the time before 7:30 because no pastries out. Owners should watch their video recordings of their mornings to see how many customers walk out with nothing. read more

I really like Honu Bakery. Their pastries are charming and really good too. The stand out is the turtle bread. It's nice and soft, and has really good flavor. I could eat the whole thing myself (and have, once or twice). I also really like the chocobear cupcake, the souffle cheesecake, and the biscuit toast. The chocobear cupcake is stuffed with chocolate ganache, so you really have to like chocolate. The souffle cheesecake has some hints of vanilla, and it's nice and fluffy. The milk teas aren't anything special, but a good add-on to the menu. In any case, it's a great addition to Kam shop. read more

On a morning I forgot my coffe, so on the way to work, I used the all-mighty yelp app to help me locate a well-reviewed local/mom&pop coffee shop. (They open at 7 and there is plenty of parking available in the Kam Shopping Ctr in the morning!). I ended up returning nearly three days back-to-back because I quickly became addicted to their Thai Coffee. I noticed their signature "Turtle Bread" (which looks like the top of a Honu Shell - so cute!) was obvi popular, so I ordered one; however, I was told they aren't ready until 7:30 everyday. I was offered to purchase day-old Turtle Bread for 40% and hells-yea this mama aint above buying day-old bread, especially at such a reasonable discount! I took a piece (maybe two) and brought in the rest to delight everyone at work with the sweet, soft rolls, filled with light whipped cream, some raisins, and sprinkled with chestnuts (and I normally hate chestnuts). Tip: Bringing in Turtle Bread to work is a great way to network and build relationships in the office! Can't wait to return and try their other gourmet bakery items! read more

I went in for the first time for the turtle bread. It's probably like a thousand calories but how can you turn down butter cream and raisins (and an unknown ingredient to me: yellow and cubed)?! However, it is on the pricier side at just under $10 for a "loaf". The pastries are pricey compared to other bakeries around but most are quite pretty! The cashier was friendly and quick. First time in the store and I was really impressed how clean and organized it was. The staffs were pleasant and polite. The cakes are so cute but little pricey. Small round vanilla cake is $22 whole Medium/Large $27 whole (size aren't that big) The taste is so light, not sweet its alright but for me too expensive for that kind of cake and taste. Tried the cupcakes. The panda choco cupcake was delicious. It was moist and not too sweet. And i love it. Then i tried the cheesecake cupcake with fruit (strawberry and kiwi) on top. Mmm YuM! I got a bunny cupcake. It was very cute looking but tasted very mediocre. The frosting wasnt very tasty and the cake itself was kind of weak and a slightly dry. It basically looks good but not that great tasting. The turtle bread bums we're pretty good though. Next time I got the regular cupcakes, red velvet. Love bakeries such as this. Many choices to choose from ranging from sweet to savory. When it comes to having my husband with me, it ends up as if we just bought the whole store. Luckily it was just the pastries both sweet and savory including a cake that we bought. No individualized pieces of cake nor any other goods in the glass counter. I must admit I wanted to but there's always a next time. We got a mixed fruit cream cake. Love how fluffy it is and not too sweet. It came with a plastic knife and plenty of candles for free. Back in California with the Korean bakery I use over there we often have to request for the candles and was limited. We got the cake for a special reason: not only to celebrate my birthday but my sister's and my niece's. Backdrop story: often my sister and I have celebrated our birthdays together; however, due to me moving to be with my husband we couldn't. I made a quick video with the cake to say 'Happy Birthday' to her and to our (my husband and I) niece's birthday (we agreed to always celebrate her birthday. She passed away last December from a car accident and would've been 21 this year). So why only 4 stars? I think it would be better to have all the foods to be placed in containers rather than open to air. Food can often dry out. Even savory food gets cold easily. Another issue we had was as to figuring out the kind of cakes they had (full sheet cakes). There was no name tag as to the kind of cakes they were. It seemed rather troublesome to ask as to what each of them were. Overall a great place. All the ladies behind the counter were nice and helpful. Definitely will be trying other sweets. Kam was in need of a bakery full of delicious desserts and baked goods! Luckily, Honu Bakery came along. The owner is the same owner as Boulangerie on King St., so hearing that, I knew Honu Bakery would be the perfect place for me to get my daily dose of donuts. The first day they opened, I'll be one of those who will shamelessly admit I wanted to buy out their entire display case of green tea and sweet potato cheesecake, panda cupcakes (!!!),and birthday cakes! However, we settled on a few slices of cake (green tea cheesecake IS a must!!) and a box of delicious baked goods. I've been trying to come here at least a couple times a week always to get this one donut that they have. Its very similar to the Chinese snack, jin dui, which I can't stand eating. However, Honu Bakery makes one that has sugar and less sesame, and definitely less oily! No filling inside, the way I like it :) have yet to try all their different baked goods, and keep in mind that they have delicious drinks and shave ice too! I have been a fan of their honu bread for a while from Boulangerie on King st. I found out that they have another store, and i decided to stopped by. Today, i ended up buying 3 pastries instead of honu bread. Fried Sesami Mochi Ball It was too sugary and too oily for me, but I guess that is the nature of this type of sweets. White Bean Paste Bun It was pretty good. I liked both of the taste of bun and bean paste. Just wish it were bigger ; p Taro Donut This was DA BOMB!!! I grew up in Japan, surrounded with these kind of bakeries, and would still say this taro donut was surprisingly good. Looks can be deceiving, everytime I come to kam shopping center I always pass by this bakery but never went in. I've always wanted to go because judging from their showcase I was always impressed, really cutely decorated pastries on display,I get sweet tooths just looking. Finally I walked in today and found out they not only sell pastries but also drinks like tea and coffee. Being the tea lover that I am, I ordered a taro milk tea. My first sip I was disgusted because the tea was so bitter. I've never had a taro milk tea that was bitter like that before. I had asked the workers if they could sweeten my drink and I think she only added like 1 pump of liquid sugar. After drinking the tea I could tolerate it, it wasn't as horrendous as the first sip, UNTIL.... the pearl came into my mouth and it was so mushy, it was as if it was sitting in water all day. The pearls didn't even come up as balls from the straw but broken pieces it ruined the whole drink. I couldn't even finish the drink and just dumped it. Not only did I try the milk tea I also got a blue Berry cheese cake that was in the display case. I waited until I got home to eat it and i was I didn't, I wish I was still at the bakery so I could get a refund. When I think of cheese cake I think of that thin gram cracker crust with the delicious creamy cream cheese. The blue Berry cheese cake was white cake with cream cheese on it and a blue Berry Jam as a topping. I was so disappointed with the cheese cake that it went down the dumpster as well. The first time I came in, I saw that the creme puffs and they looked soo good! It was sooo delicious and I couldn't wait to go back for more the next time. Then, when I came in today, I was super excited to get a creme puff. But, when I purchased one, it was poorly baked. It was dry and the creme puff wasn't filled at a decent amount. They could have done better. I hope they could go back to how they made it the first time I came here (soft and airy/with a decent amount of filling). This review is for their cupcakes - amazing! Different but just as amazing as Cake Couture and a friend's cupcakes. I'm always hesitant to bite into cupcakes. Will it be too sweet? Not enough rich flavor? Taste like a Safeway cupcake but because it's from a bakery it's somehow supposed to taste better? The chocolate cupcake with ganache topping and ganache filled was decadent and rich. I look forward to returning to try a latte and breakfast goodie.
