I love their strawberry shortcake and we regularly buy cakes for special occasions from this bakery. However, I just stopped by the Kalihi location to ask if they can make a cake in a "fiesta" design for my son's first birthday. The woman i spoke to seemed like she just didnt want to be bothered. Poor customer service! Their website says they can make custom cake designs and have examples. She just flat out told me "no". I guess they don't need the business. Awesome cake, but forgot the birthday customization and uninterested in hearing about error. Ordered a doggie cake from Honu Bakery and called the day before to confirm the order and birthday greeting on it. Cake was ready on time, well packaged for transport, cute as a button, and tasted great! But no birthday message on the cake. Boo! Called to let them know about the error, partly in case someone else got our cake. (How weird is it to have someone else's name on your cake?) The person apologized, but was clearly uninterested in hearing about it. If you care about making sure your order is right, I'd suggest having them open it up for you to inspect before you leave the store, which is what I believe most bakeries do to avoid this kind of unhappy surprise at special events. read more

I wanted to treat myself to a slice of cake for my birthday. My husband and I looked up bakeries and decided on Honu Bakery because I liked the look of the atmosphere based on online photos. The cake slice options were minimal so instead we opted for one of my favorite desserts, cheesecake. I had the Oreo, my husband had mango. Although they were both tasty, they were not traditional (cream cheese) cheesecake, little disappointed. The bakery itself is super cute, great atmosphere and cute decor. I actually was hungry and stopped by Kam Shopping center to grab a couple of plates but it was too early (places I wanted opened at 10:30) So went to Honu Bakery. Haven't been there for yrs. since a bad experience my first time, but I was hungry and needed something and the items in the window looked delicious. I must have gone on a bad day before, because today not only did I get a friendly hello the moment I walked in (as crowded as the first time I went in, too and looking like a hobo off the streets no less, because I had been running errands that didn't need me talking or seeing anyone or so I thought) and what a difference - just from grabbing the taro donut with the tongs, I could tell it was soft. So, I grabbed a few items, anpan, taro donut, and a sweet roll bread that I saw everyone buying - some two. Went to the counter, and was asked if there was anything else I wanted, so took the opportunity to ask about the cakes (adorable). Course it's not how it looks, but how it tastes - and let me tell you, this time around everything I purchased did not disappoint. The taro bun was soft, with just the right amount of chewy, with a sweet taro filling that had the right creamy consistency - not solid, not dripping out of the bun, but perfect. Together, it was just a little bit of heaven on earth. The anpan, was just as together, not like before. Again that perfect soft, chewy bun, with a wonderfully creamy interior that wasn't crumbling out, it was amazing. They are a little pricy, but for the taste this time around, well worth it. Just moved into the area and seen this place a few times while shopping at Kam shopping center. Didn't realize they were closed on Sunday :c boo. Finally stopped by this past Saturday (02/13), picked up mochi ice cream & a cream puff (which was delicious!) The mochi ice cream on the other hand.. was quite terrible, sadly. Mainly because the mochi on the outside was not soft and chewy, it tasted stale I bought 5 that day, in different flavors; only tried 2 so far, pistachio and lychee. Kind of hesitating to try the rest now. Bummer. Maybe I just got junk ones, or they're old. Really old. Other than that, I'd come back to try out other things because I love pastries! I have to say this though, the inside of the store is organized and looks really well maintained. Which is a plus! Otherwise I would've gone down to 2 stars. read more

Loved this bakery. You can't tell from the outside that it would be really nice inside. Their decor is different, loved it, I somehow felt like I was in a pastry shop back in Seoul. The employees were fast and efficient. Bought 2 Turtle loaves of bread, I'd give it 5 stars if it was a bit cheaper, but it was worth it. I'm a regular customer here because I love their honu bread and their cute designed cakes. But I just bought a round cake worth $28 yesterday evening for my co-worker's baby shower at work. I requested to the lady if she can put writings on it as " Congrats Amy!!". Since it was a Happy birthday on the display. So all I thought everything was OK. I thought they used a new chocolate chip where they write greeting words. So this morning, I gave the cake to my co-worker. She brought out the cake from the box. The greeting words showed was happy birthday because it was slightly bent down but the other side was Congrats Amy. I was so embarrassed. I didn't know they recycled the chocolate chip they write on for greetings. Jennifer is the name of the person who wrote the greeting which I spoked with her on the phone regarding my complain. I asked her why my greetings at the back of it says happy birthday? She said they used the same chocolote chip if they ran out of new one to write on. But never informed me they do that. she supposed to let me know so that I know what to expect. I told her that I want to speak with the manager. She said the manager is not around this. He only comes when they about to close the bakery. She asked my name and phone number so I gave it and she will give to the manager and wilI call me back. She was apologetic. I hope it will never happen again. Lesson learned. Check what you bought before you leave the premises. read more

Korean bakery. This is the same as Boulangerie on S. King St but looks absolutely empty. The pastries were ok but not much selection and appeal. I ordered their milk tea with boba... horrible. The boba is so hard that I couldnt suck it through the straw and when I did, it was either a stale hard texture or just not cooked all the way. Disappointed. Once again, never order milk tea unless it's from Coffee or Tea. read more

Recently opened (3 months ago) branch of King St. bakery, working hard to gain customers and business in Kalihi. Friendly greetings by all in shop and tasty samples of signature bread set a great mood. Good selection of Asian-style baked goods - sweetened bread with a variety of Asian influenced fillings from adzuki beans to sausage. Sweet dessert section as well. Clean, well-kept and cheery. Only complaint was lack of any European style hard breads, baguettes, etc. read more

This place is a hit or miss. I've had really good things there and just okay things there. Sometimes the cupcakes are super moist and delicious. Other times they are stale-ish and dry and lacking flavor. A little over-priced. Not the friendliest staff but good location. read more

Went to this shop yesterday, everything looked delicious ! Ordered a nice assortment, spent about $ 20 bucks. Got home brewed some nice Kona Coffee for the Wife and I, bit into the first Cream Cheese Pastry, surprise spent $ 2.75 for what looked like a 1/2 teaspoon of filling if even that, RIP-OFF Alert going off. Proceeded to check out the other pastries that were supposed to have filling, same thing micro to almost non-existent fillings. The Chocolate Éclair, same thing very little filling W T F ! Total RIP-OFF, avoid this place like the PLAGUE. Better Buy- Kamehahameha Bakery, Shirokiyas @ Ala Moana, , Nandings Bakery or Liliha Bakery at least you'll get your moneys worth. I had a chocolate cake bar which was somewhat disappointing. The cake was a little dry, which is surprising as the entire surface is covered in chocolate. The chocolate itself is difficult to fork so I wound up with smashed cake all over the plate. The only thing that saved the visit was the scoop of Dave's ice cream my daughter ordered. It added some much needed moisture to the cake and she enjoyed eating the chocolate pieces with her ice cream. I am baffled about their use of term boulangerie in conjunction with their name as I didn't see any traditional bread associated with a boulangerie. I should think that they'd use patisserie. Whatevers. The interior is tastefully done. However, the floor was a bit sticky and it seems like nobody made an effort to wipe the tables, even though I counted three employees in varying degrees of boredom. Too bad. Kalihi is much in need of upscale eateries such as Honu Bakery. I'll give them another chance and hope for the best. read more

Tried the bubbies ice cream here and it was quite dry and hard compared to when you get it from the bubbies stores. I tired it a couple times and it was hard so I think it's either old or they don't cover it well. I also tried some of the chocolate cake. Just had lunch at bale and needed a sugar rush. When I walked in, the store is filled with cute pastries and a bunch to choose from. I didn't get one greeting from either workers, not even a smile. Seemed like they'd rather be somewhere else or ready to leave for the day type of attitude. One worker was making a drink for an elderly couple and the other was ringing up a customer. There was a commotion between the employee on the register and the elderly couple. It wasn't busy and there was a total of 7 customers including myself and my cousin. The employee was being just plain rude and was pretty much scolding the couple. It seemed like the couples first language isn't English and probably don't understand it much. The employee went on scolding them saying there's a line and she has other customers to help and they shouldn't be bothering them when they had previously asked what they wanted. I get that they didn't stand in line, most likely didn't know what to order yet and probably needed a closer look at the menu but I thought it was very rude for the employee to be scolding them like that especially in front of other customers! I felt very embarrassed for the treatment she was giving them and made the rest of us feel very uncomfortable. That encounter made me think 'wow is this how it's gonna be like now? Where people don't respect their elders?' The employees could've and should've handled it differently. I felt like I needed to put this review in for the elderly couple and for the company to be aware of this type of attitude coming off from an employee of theirs. Not bad at all. Green tea cheesecake was ok. It was more of a cake than a traditional cheesecake. I also tried their sponge cake. Honestly, it was nothing special. It was moist, spongy, not too sweet (which I prefer) but nothing stood out to me. Finally, I tried this mochi bread w/ black sesame seeds on top. It was too tough to chew & nothing resembled it being the consistency of "mochi." So far, nothing compares to the bakery's in Japan. read more

Ordered a birthday cake--"Happy Birthday" writing for a size of cake that you need to pre-order. Cake was ready when I picked it up 1 hour after my specified pick-up time but not the "Happy Birthday" writing. Bakery clerk insinuates that I'm too early for the pick-up that's why the writing was not ready and proceeds to write out "Happy Birthday ...." while I wait. I was already late for the party and was even more late because they dropped the ball and didn't have it ready by the specified time. What so hard about writing it out when the cake was completed instead of when I pick it up? I already prepaid it. That was disappointing. read more
