Donut Series, Part 8 I probably wouldn't have guessed that "Hook and Press" was a donut joint by its name alone, but after it was recommended to us by @donuthunting we just knew that we had to try it. They claim to offer "craft donuts" and it would be difficult to argue with them. I never imagined using the term "dining experience" when it comes to the partaking of a donut, but that's exactly the term that jumped into my mind because of the ambiance they have created. "Donuts" and "ambiance" being associated in any way? This was truly a first for me. Although their extended menu offers Vegan and gluten conscious offerings, I'm not actually sure I could be here and pay attention to anything other than their donuts. After an extended internal struggle I finally placed an order for a "Coastal Fog" and a "Hostess Cupcake." Genius names, amirite? They were both so good that they inspired us to create (what we think is) a new term. These are "sipping donuts" and by that we mean that they are meant to be savored. Much like a fine wine or whiskey, please slow down and take your time when enjoying these beauties. If you happen to visit with a four legged friend in tow, there's no need for your companion to be left out as they also offer "Dog Donuts." As a long time fan of hook and press, I am extremely disappointed in the service I received today. I brought out of town friends to experience what is usually a great breakfast, but instead I had a very unpleasant encounter with a woman at the coffee bar. When I went to check on the status of an online order I had placed 30 minutes before, she snapped that I should have checked in with her right when I had arrived. I told her I had gone to the front counter and checked in upon my arrival and was told to wait until my name was called. She argued with me and said that it was my responsibility to personally solicit a barista to make my online order. This has never been the case for any other online order I have placed in the past. When I politely suggested that the cashier inform the customer of that when they check in upon arrival, she rudely told me it was my job to figure this out. I was shocked at her response as it felt entirely uncalled for. It completely ruined the tone of our morning. I would think twice about coming here unless you like combative service experiences. read more

We were in on Saturday and we were not prepared for the crowd! Finding a table was tricky but the manager saw us dazed holding our donuts, she found us a table and cleaned it for us. A few minutes later the same woman brought our gorgeous drinks. I just want to take a second to give your baristas some LOVE. The ridiculous amount of drinks they make is insane. The location is so cute I love the open concept! The display of donuts was a 10/10 a great variety my favorite out of the four that I got was the everything bagel donut like I can not explain how obsessed I was after the first bite I couldn't wait to get home and finished it. Donuts were all great. Textures were distinct in the old fashioned vs the brioche, and the vegan donut was certainly one of the better vegan donuts I've had! Flavors were not overly sweet/artificial, and the fruit flavors tasted like the fruit with a touch of sweetness. My only note was the "browned butter" flavor was undetectable. I think they could've bumped up the browned butter so the taste came through more definitively, or just not waste time on it at all... if you're advertising something is "browned butter" - people will be on the lookout for that flavor. Line moved as fast as it could, but it would have been nice to see the donuts on top of the case so you could get a visual before making it to the ordering counter - it might have expedited the process a bit for those who need a little more time to decide. Probably the most crowded I've ever seen a dine-in section in any donut shop I've ever been to. I found it interesting there was even a dine-in section at all. It was a little loud, but nothing obnoxious. The space was bright and clean. Priced fairly for artisan individual donuts, but I think it would've been nice to see a LITTLE bit of a deal for buying in bulk. Small discounts for buying a 4-pack, 6-pack, dozen, etc. just to entice people to buy a little more if they're already there to spend. Have been wanting to try the breakfast sandwiches here and today was my chance. Had the granddaughters for the day so decided to take them to brunch here. We tried apple fritter and Boston cream donut, which were delicious. Everyone agreed on that experience , real apple in the fritter made it extra tasty. Both stars are for the pastries. Added another star for ambiance, great outdoor seating, and friendly staff. Next we tried the sandwiches which is what I came to experience. All of them were too greasy, over priced for size and contents. The turkey sausage was too bland, making it tasteless, or maybe it was the excess grease and herby avocado mayo that didn't seem to have any avocado flavor at all, just over powering herbs and mayo. Next the bacon sandwich, the baked egg on it was too much like a custard texture and also very tasteless. Lastly the goat cheese sandwich had way too much bread vs ingredients ratio. Love stopping here whenever I'm in SB! Hook and Press has solid donuts and fare, fun rotating flavors. I'm leaving this review in reference to the review right before mine about the employees being "scolded." My family and I love coming here constantly. We're here every other week and sometimes once a week. Their coffee imo is the best in sb, the espresso is not sour or burnt, it's delicious and their doughnuts are wonderful! They change their flavors seasonally and all the doughnut flavors are so good! Anytime we have out of towners come visit we send them here as their cafe is so cozy and cute. Having said that, we had a bad experience with an employee this morning. My mom, stepdad, brother and nephews and i went to have breakfast at 10am. They have a 90 minute limit on their tables on Saturday and Sunday (totally understandable). However, by 10:45 we hadn't even finished our breakfast yet and an employee came and tapped on the sign on the table that said 90 minute limit and told us to "be mindful" while taking away our plates (we hadn't even finished our coffees yet). We were all in shock and speechless. It came across as very rude and is if she were kicking us out. My stepdad immediately asked what her name was and that her behavior was so uncalled for as we had only been sitting for 45 minutes. Half of that time was spent waiting for our meals and drinks. She replied with "I'm not telling you my name, if you want to know it go ask someone else." He immediately went to go talk to the manager/owner about this employee. He was very apologetic, and we understood. We come here very often and never have had any problems like this before, so it won't stop us from coming back - mainly because you could tell he was so embarrassed by the employees treatment of their customers and apologized numerous times. Going back to the review beneath mine, it seems like the owner did the fair thing and reminded his employees how to treat customers. Anyway, we've probably been here about 50 times and have only had this one bad experience. We'll be back to our usual weekly/biweekly gatherings there :) read more

The donut choices were so fun and creative, and they all looked beautiful. The vibe/decor was fun too. We took our 2 kids in while we were vacationing here. We had a large party--8 of us came in. Unfortunately, the employees were incredibly rude. They snapped at my kids to not touch the glass (and they were just pointing, for the record, not smearing their hands and faces all over it), pressured us to order even though our full party wasn't quite there yet since we had to walk over due to a road being blocked, and they told us that if we were ready to order it would make their jobs easier. In general, the whole staff seemed grumpy and inconvenienced. Nobody smiled at us. I've worked in customer service before, and none of this was what I got trained in, though perhaps times have changed. It wasn't like we were ordering the bare minimum either; we ordered a dozen donuts, a coffee, and three drinks from their grab and go fridge. In summary, it seems like this place is geared for small groups and not for kids. In the future, we would avoid this place and try somewhere else. read more

Oh boy, I'm so behind on my reviews but i honestly delayed this one because i didn't care enough about the donuts to review them. After reading all the rave reviews about Hook and Press, i was so excited to try it! The flavors were so unique and sounded appealing. When you walk in, there are boxes lined up on the table and you just look for your name. Didn't have to deal much with any of the workers so can't really comment on service. DONUTS The dough itself was so tough, more like bread. The inside was airy so i didn't understand why it was such a tough, chewy donut. I felt like it was overly sweet (yes, contrary to what others have said). I was super excited for their flavor offerings but i feel like it just fell short of expectations. The location is great right in the middle of Santa Barbara, it's so cute inside. There is great outdoor seating for those nice warm mornings. I initially wanted to give this place a bad review, but decided to give it another try. For my second visit I ordered in advance, which went smoothly. I ordered Ube Brownie, Strawberry Basil, Cinnamon Crumb, Browned Butter, Boston Cream Pie, and Lavender Lemonade. All of them were very good, with the exception of Browned Butter. It just tasted like sugar glazed donut without any distinct flavor. Lavender Lemonade was my favorite, even though I generally don't care for lavender flavored items. Lavender flavor was quite potent, but combining it with lemon balanced it out. Donuts weren't warm when I got them, but still tasted fresh and clean without any oily aftertaste. Come to think of it, this place seems very similar to Sidecar Doughnuts in LA/OC area, although I think Sidecar is slightly better. This place also has some interesting coffee drinks. PB Latte was quite good, although it didn't have a strong peanut butter taste. Regular drip coffee was good too. Wasn't too fond of Lavender Latte because lavender taste was overwhelming. I guess that's a good thing if you really like lavender. Donut flavors change frequently based on seasonal ingredients, so it's best to check online for current flavors. It's located inside Mosaic Locale, which is sort of like a tiny food court comprised of three different businesses in one location. Draughtsmen Aleworks and Buena Onda are the other two businesses. It's like a mouth-gasm from first bite!!!! While looking for a bite to eat the uniqueness of the donut options made hook and press the go too! I am admittedly not a donut connoisseur and haven't had a donut in years but the craft style donuts with options like brown butter glaze or grapefruit poppy seed made it a no brainer! The tippy top of the mountain came when I saw the bacon egg and cheese sandwich came on a glazed donut, umm yes please!! Every bit of this visit was amazing from service to food to the dining area! It was very open and the energy was upbeat. The browned butter donut had tons of flavor and had little notes of salt that just took it over the top. The bacon egg and cheese on a glazed donut was the perfect mix of sweet and salty, and balanced textures from the crunchy bacon, velvety cheddar cheese and the smooth donut. Hook & Press is by far one of my favorite spots downtown to enjoy downtown Santa Barbara. Whether you prefer Sweet or Savory, Hook & Press has it there for you! This weekend I joined some of my amazing team for an outing at Hook & Press for a sweet tooth craving that needed remedy! We were met by a pretty short line which is good since this is an extremely popular brunch spot. There were so many choices to pick and the service was incredible as the staff answered all of our questions about the array of donuts they had in the shop. I went with a blood orange donut, a vanilla sprinkle donut and a browned sugar donut to share with my partner later that day. The blood orange was a perfect blend of sweet and tart and had a great flavor to it, the sprinkle donut was a perfect sweet treat and my favorite by far was the browned sugar which was immaculate in every bite! The donuts were not the only thing to impress as I also had a Rose Milk Latte. Now...if you are a fan of rose then this is the drink for you! The flavor was absolutely perfect as it wasn't too sweet and did not taste like I just bit into a flower. It was greatly balanced and on top of that had an amazing pink aesthetic look to it. The ambiance of Hook & Press is so warm and welcoming and totally made the day even better just being there. I highly recommend getting there early to snag a table with some friends or make it a brunch date to fully take this place in. I really love this place, but the customer service is pretty bad. Especially at the coffee bar where you pick up online coffee orders. No one acknowledges your existence and they act as if you are bothering them. I don't know if they are short staff or what but the baristas are not friendly at all. I don't even know where to start. I saw this place on instagram while in town and stopped by around 10am on a Friday. There was a short line but it was fine because I needed time to decide on flavors anyways. Ended up ordering a P.O.G., Mixed Berry Fritter, Strawberry Shortcake and the Browned Butter donuts, as well as an iced latte with almond milk. All of the donuts were so soft and moist and didn't feel heavy the way normal donuts usually do. My favorite was the strawberry shortcake (vegan but you would never know otherwise!!). This place was so wonderful! Super nice staff. As someone who's had an egg allergy her entire life, I can't even explain how encouraging it was to have vegan options! My best friend with me told her mine tasted identical -- I couldn't believe it was vegan as I was eating it. The cafe itself is adorable, very photo worthy and comfortable. Over the years, I've also enjoyed lemon lavender, coastal fog (black tea with whipped cream), animal cracker, Mexican hot cocoa, POG, cinnamon crumb, samoa, matcha coconut, blood orange creamsicle, cereal milk, gingerbread cheesecake (festive and yum!), vanilla peppermint, pineapple Dole Whip, POG (tart and tropical!), filled chocolate creme brûlée (the donut's exterior was covered in hardened caramelized sugar like the top of a creme brûlée-pretty fun!), and filled everything bagel (this savory one was funky for me, but I appreciate their effort). Because the menu changes every so often, I know I'll be returning in the future to try new flavors, so I like that they have a rewards program called "Sprinkles" where you earn 1 sprinkle for every $1 spent. Twenty sprinkles gives you $1 off your entire sale, thirty sprinkles gives you $2 off any beverage, and fifty sprinkles gives you a free donut. I'd recommend pre-ordering after 3pm the day before for pickup the following day to ensure you get all the flavors you want because the donuts sell out pretty quickly, especially on the weekends. I came super early on a Friday morning hoping to beat the rush (I literally got there 8:02) and there was already a line!! This place is small and the store itself also has Buena Onda so hook and press is near the middle/back. They have a beautiful display of donuts and some of the flavors rotate in and out. I got 6 donuts (the blueberry pancake, the coastal fog, browned butter, the apple fritter, the lemon lavender, and the everything bagel) I wanted to try a bunch of flavors so I got a box and split with friends Lemon Lavender: (4/5) I was really excited for this one which is a new flavor. It was a tad too sweet for me but the lavender flavor really shined through and its topped with little bits of lavender. There's a slight lemon aftertaste as well thats not too strong Blueberry Pancake: (5/5) This one might be my favorite! It really tasted like a pancake and I loved the blueberry icing. It was also quite sweet so I could only eat a little at a time but I kept wanting more!! Apple Fritter: (5/5) This apple fritter is only available on Fridays and I wish that wasn't the case because it is so DELISH. It seems simple but the texture and the bits of apple are sooo yummy. Everything Bagel: (4/5) I don't know why but I thought this one would be sweet...well it's not! It's a bit salty with cream cheese inside and I enjoyed it as a reprieve from all the sugar Coastal Fog: (5/5) I forget what flavor this really is but it's delicious! (maybe a tea of some sort?) and it has a scrumptious whipped cream on top Browned butter: (3.5/5) a bit too sweet for my liking and reminded me a bit of a cookie. You can really taste the brown butter flavor though. The service was really friendly but not the fastest. Very frustrating experience. Came in wanting one thing. Customers in front of me were taking quite a while to decide what donuts they wanted. A second employee eventually came to help once they saw a line formed. I picked what I wanted, it was boxed up, and we were about to head to the register when the customers in front said they wanted what I just picked but it was the last one. Since they were "first" they said they had to give it to them. Lesson learned I suppose. Order ahead if you know what you want. read more
