    fish of the day burrito
    Kathleen W.

This place is clearly popular with a long queue and a long wait for food to be ready after ordering. The fish burritos seem to be the most popular and we got the fish of the day. The burritos are quite underwhelming and was mostly rice and beans with a little avocado and a few small pieces of fish. The fish was a little overcooked and on the dry side. I had a few fries from a friend who got fish and chips and the fries were solid.

Recommended by my son! He mentioned he comes here often whenever he's in the area. He usually gets the poke, but since it was a bit chilly the day we visited, eating cold poke outside didn't seem like the best idea. So, we went with the Fish and Chips instead. Because it's attached to a seafood market, you can really tell the quality of the ingredients is good. Everything tasted so fresh and delicious! You can usually tell when a place uses low-quality ingredients or old oil just by the smell as you walk past, but everything here felt clean and fresh. The vibe is very relaxed and laid-back--it instantly gives you that fun, "I'm on vacation" feeling. They also serve great local beers that paired perfectly with the food. Service was ok. If the weather is nice, this is a fantastic spot to go for a stroll nearby and grab a drink. Highly recommended!

Got the poke plate and fish and chips! Loved the generous portion of poke, everything was delicious on the plate. The beans were a little hard. Fish and chips is typical but good with tartar and all their sauces. Service was kind and quick. Place has only outside seating. Limited especially during a busy hour. Tables come and go quickly though.

Really nice and well priced fish of the day. It came with a cabbage slaw, white rice, black beans, sliced avocado and radishes, all made very delicious by their vivid orange hot sauce. I didn't think to ask if they sold bottles, but it was really good.

When I went, there was a long line that was WELL WORTH THE WAIT if you are looking for fried fish and chips! I recommend everything honestly. They cook the fish right in front of you, you get your choice of fish, they have fresh fish you can buy and take home raw. They also have POKÉ!? I had no clue about this, but the person sitting next to me who ordered this thoroughly enjoyed theirs. The FISH TACOS were incredible as well as the FISH N CHIPS, I got ROCKFISH my favorite for both. I love their homemade carrot habanero spicy salsa sauce. I think it's carrot? I feel like someone told me it was carrot? Their pico was standard and fresh, they also had that stinky vinegar on the table next to their carrot habanero sauce that's perfect to mix with tartar sauce and ketchup for fries. The outdoor space for seating is lovely in good weather and can get a bit packed if you come during a rush. I would absolutely come back to this place. Delicious!!!!

Fish and chips were the start of our groups order! Perfectly battered and fried. Fish was moist and seasoned well. Dip it in tartar sauce for that extra oomph! Chefs kiss! Wait line is long but it goes by fast and food comes out quick. During high peak times, it is hard to find a seat but diners are very nice and make room for others! Drinks are amazing. Beer and fresh squeeze juices are available! Bathroom is near the kitchen and there is only one so there is a wait. Dogs welcome on the patio!

I was around Ocean Beach and had done quite a bit of walking that day, so naturally, I started getting hungry. I was craving some seafood and searched Yelp for something nearby. That's how I ended up at Hook Fish Co. When I arrived, there was already a line, and I quickly understood why. I saw people enjoying their meals, and when I asked a few of them about the food, they all said it was worth the wait. When it was finally my turn to order, the cashier was incredibly kind and helpful. Since it was my first time, I had a few questions about the menu and drinks, and she was happy to explain everything. Even the chefs were fun and energetic. At one point I yelled out, "Frijoles!" and they yelled it right back with the same energy. It definitely made the experience more memorable. The wait was around 15-20 minutes, and once I saw my platter come out, I was excited and honestly drooling. The three big pieces of fish were beautifully seasoned, and even the seasoning on the chips was something different that I really enjoyed. Every bite was hot, flavorful, and delicious. The fish tasted incredibly fresh, and the fries were crispy and satisfying. I definitely understood why this place had such a crowd. My only small issue was that one of my pieces of fish was pretty thick, and when I bit into it, I noticed the batter in the center wasn't completely cooked through. It probably could have used a little more time in the fryer, but it wasn't enough to ruin the overall experience. Overall, I had a great time at Hook Fish Co. Great food, friendly staff, and a fun atmosphere. I'd definitely come back again!

I got really hungry after walking around the beach and another place. So I decided to dine at Hook Fish, which seems to be very popular. It's located near many homes. I'm sure that many residents who live near are lucky coming here because honestly the food was good here. There is no indoor dining but they do have a patio although it can get full which is why people ended up dining at the benches. Luckily, I'm able to find a spot after I ordered my food. Also, inside the interior, you can see informations about fish and drinks. Keep in mind that they don't have fountain drinks, but you can view drinks menu on the wall. I order fish and chips and it tasted really good. I can see how seasoned the fries are and crispy the fried fish is. No wonder why sometimes a line builds up to the point where there's too many people. Honestly, I could ordered tacos there, but they feel more like an appetizer. Or maybe I don't often have tacos to the point that I get full from eating them. We'll see when I come back because I may want to try other options.

Stopped by for lunch during off peak hours and it was still pretty busy! We had the ling cod fish and chips and it was delicious. Portion size was good. Very satisfying. Would return!

Yes please on the fish and chips. Pass on the poke burrito. Wish we got the grilled fish burrito instead.

When a place is known for its fish and chips, that's exactly what you order--and this spot absolutely delivered. The fish was fried to golden perfection with a light, shatteringly crisp batter that wasn't greasy or heavy. Beneath that beautiful crunch was flaky, tender, and incredibly moist fish that practically melted with every bite. It was one of those dishes where you immediately understand why people keep coming back. The fries were crispy and a great side, but they were definitely playing second fiddle to the star of the show. As for the poke burrito...I'd skip it personally. We were feeling adventurous and gave it a shot, but it just didn't come together the way I had hoped. In hindsight, ordering the grilled fish burrito would have been the better move. The location is another big win. Just a short stroll from the beach and surrounded by shops, it's an ideal stop before or after exploring the area. Parking can take a little patience during busy hours, but don't let that deter you.

Considering how remote it felt in the Outer Sunset, I was surprised how packed this seafood spot was on a weekday afternoon. But then what does a SoMa guy like me know about the Wild West of this city? I had heard about this place over the years but only recently tried it for the first time. Even though it sits in the middle of a commercial block in a heavily residential neighborhood, I got the impression they like to think they're on Fisherman's Wharf. That's because they operate more like a takeout window with all the seating outside in a parklet set up as a weatherworn, wooden pier. The menu presented fresh fish in a number of ways: burritos, tacos, lunch plates, sandwiches, salads, burgers, and even fish & chips. The grilled fish of the day was rockfish, so I ordered the $20 Grilled Fish of the Day Salad. It was a hearty serving made up of three large, flaky fillets on a bed of mixed greens. It came with shaved vegetables, everything seed clusters, a heavy dousing of vinaigrette, and a little cup of crema for good measure. The only problem was where to eat it since the pier seats were all taken. I thought I could share one of the sidewalk tables, but a nasty German tourist shooed me away. I waited for another table to open up and finally got to eat. It turned out to be pretty satisfying. Next time I'll know to order it to go, so I can sit on the beach.. FOOD - 4 stars...the grilled fish was definitely fresh and plentiful AMBIANCE - 3 stars...like a fishing pier...seating needs to be rethought for solitary diners SERVICE - 3.5 stars...no problem with the staff...it's the selfish tourists that will get on your nerves TOTAL - 4 stars...worthwhile for the fresh fish RELATED - Exploring the Sunset? Poke burrito

Hook Fish is a great spot to grab takeout before heading to Ocean Beach for a picnic by the sunset. We ordered the poke burrito and fish & chips. The poke burrito was fresh and packed with quality ingredients. Be sure to ask for sauces on the side. They have a wide assortment to choose from. The fish & chips were fried perfectly with a light, crispy batter. The fish was fresh and flaky, and the portions were generous. The food quality is consistently good, and the casual beachside vibe makes it a great option. The only thing is that it can get quite busy and finding seating can be a challenge, but if you're taking your food down to Ocean Beach anyway, it's no problem.

First time I ate here years ago, the fish burrito was amazing! It was flavorful and perfectly balanced and the purple cabbage which tasted pickled was what made it stand out. My husband and I have thought about this burrito ever since! We were in the area yesterday and excited to get the chance to eat the fish burrito again . Unfortunately it tasted bland and the purple cabbage was nothing like it was before. We couldn't tell if it was lacking in flavor or if they just didn't fill it like they did before. The hot sauce they provided on the side helped a bit but still didn't make it 50% as good as it used to be. I'm so disappointed that a place we held in such high regard is now a place we don't think we'll visit again.

    What beverages are offered?

There is wine and beer and a couple of aqua fresca options available.

    Is the fish beer battered?

    Yes

What kind of fish do they use for fish n chips?

    Rock fish

    Is hook fish still open?

    Yes

Is any sure about the gluten free question, my friend cannot tolerate even cross contamination?

Is there bacon in the clam chowder?

Hi Katie. I'd call them and ask. They seem very flexible. I bet they would add bacon or skip it depending on your preference.

Do they have a high chair for infants?

    Yes

Is the outside dining area dog friendly?

    Yes it is..

    What the phone number?

    (628) 256-0454... it doesn't seem like they pick up at all

Are they offering indoor dining? I know it's a small spot inside but just curious

Yes, there is an enclosed area that includes the bar. It is still pretty open and breezy though.

Do they deliver? I can't find anything that states if they deliver or just do takeout. I see a menu for "online orders" but can't tell.

None of their locations do delivery- it's just all take out! I called to double check :)

Do you sell fish as a market?

Only the ones they have on display but more of a restaurant

Is the renovation done? Are they currently open?

Not sure what u mean by renovation but they are open for takeout. Not indoor dining though

    Is there parking around?

We haven't had trouble finding street parking near by - it might take a lap or two, but it's never been too bad

Birria Taco: I think a lot of restaurants are starting to understand how birria is made, so I'm noticing that the average quality is going up. While the taste profile of the meat and the consommé are above average for this place, I feel that the birria that I eat is beginning to taste the same. Kudos on the size; some spots skimp on the size. Lengua Super Burrito: I think this is priced very well for a large burrito. I am a fan of their lengua, and I'm also happy to report that I didn't feel cheated with the lengua portion size inside the burrito. I tried their asasda, and it was bad, so I'm very happy that the lengua was very good. Service: You order, you pay, you wait for the food to arrive. Nothing crazy. We came early, and I'm glad we did because the line started forming about 30 minutes before opening. By the time they opened, it was already around the corner. The staff were incredible, but one of my favorite parts was being able to watch the whole process right in front of me. It definitely build up my appetite. I ordered two tacos de asada, and honestly, two were more than enough. These tacos were big and packed with meat. They do things a little differently here they used pico de gallo instead of the usual onion and cilantro. I asked them to add the onion and cilantro anyway, and when they came out, I was impressed. The steak was tender, juicy, and had a flavor I honestly hadn't experienced in a taco before. It had this deep, savory, smoky taste that felt completely different from the tacos I'm used to getting in Chicago. The meat itself was so well seasoned that it could easily stand on its own. The freshness from the pico balanced the richness of the steak, while the salsa brought a nice kick that stayed with you after every bite. Simple, but so much flavor packed into each taco. Tried several of their tacos, the chicken quesadilla and a burrito. The burrito was delightful. Plenty of steak but still balanced and fresh. The steak tacos are also meaty and good. The meat is well seasoned and, being authentic, it is allowed to be the prominent ingredient. I would similarly describe the chicken and even the beef tongue tacos. What I loved the most, however, was the beef head taco. Immense and incredible flavor beefy flavor, not to mention that moat restaurants wouldn't dare having it on the menu. By far the best taco I've ever had. If I get the chance to visit La Taqueria again that's all I want to eat. Unfortunately there were also two items that I found to be disappointing. One was the quesadilla. Even though the chicken is good it was very greasy. The other was the pork taco. Didn't love the flavor and, again, a bit on the fatty side for me, which is not often my opinion on a pork dish. All in all, if you want to experience authentic tacos, go here. And... live a little!
