Finally came out to Hook Fish after hearing a ton about it. Weekend lunch, wait was decent, but only 10 minutes in line and 30 minutes for the food. Go walk around the neighborhood, cross the street to grab a coffee at Blackbird, much better to spend the 30 minutes. Seating is pretty tough; it's really crowded, so we had to prop against the fence. The fish tacos were great. Super fresh slaw, and the fish was tender and good. The sauce was weird though; just vinegar, not a real cream sauce that I usually like. The fish and chips were awesome too, but not flavored enough in the middle. My husband and I had just finished shopping at Blackbird Bookstore, and happened to see this place across the street. We figured it must be good since there were lots of people eating at their parklets and waiting for orders. It was a Saturday and it was early evening and so they were busy. Order at the window, and your buzzer will let you know when your order is ready. Food was great. I can never resist beer battered fish and fries, so I ordered that. Loved it. Nice crispy and light coating and the fish was tasty. The hubby ordered the fish tacos. He let me taste . We both liked it. The fries were not soggy, so always a plus. We were able to snag a small table for four in their parklet, which we ended up sharing with another couple. Totally fine with us as we were almost done eating as well. The quality of fish at Hook Fish is amazing. On top of that everything is perfectly prepared. I'm a big fan of the fish and chips the batter is not too thick nor too thin to let the flavor of the fish shine through. The potatoes they use for the fries are an excellent and are lightly salted. I didn't get to try it lol. The side salad is such a generous portion and it comes with a nice light vinaigrette. Personally I wish it had a little more sauce but it was just light enough. PRO TIP: add the habanero carrot sauce to it!!! There's jars on most of the tables outside and it adds SO MUCH FLAVOR and a nice KICK to the salad! The taco itself was enjoyable, however, it wasn't anything special in terms of taste and I feel like not worth going out of your way for. They do load the taco up and are not skimping out on fish though, which I really appreciated. We came on a weekday night and there wasn't much of a wait. The store is more of a stand and is super small inside with no indoor seating, however, there is a patio in the front with some seats. All the tables were pretty dirty from diners prior to us, so I wish they did a better job cleaning in between parties. The pros: this place is always busy with good reason, it's one of the best places in the city to get a fresh, quality piece of fish, and the vibes match the neighborhood perfectly. The cons: the service has really gone down hill in the last few years. I ordered pick-up recently, and was told that it'd be ready at 12:55. I showed up a few minutes after that time, went to the window and was told they were "just about to get started with that order." In the twenty minutes it took for my food to be ready, I saw at least a dozen other people bluntly turned away with "it's not ready yet" - no apology for the delay, no explanation, just "nope." Then when I got home, I discovered that they'd put the wrong fish in my burrito. I emailed to ask what my options were, and haven't received a response in over 24 hours. In short, if you've got plenty of time and want to take in a casual, no rush meal, it's still a solid option to enjoy some of the better cuisine in the Outer Sunset. Hands down the best fish and chips I've ever had. We got to the place a little before they open which is 11 am and there is a small line out the door. There is no indoor seating and you sit on the outdoor patio space. They weren't very "crispy," more on the soft side, but the cod was very tasty and flavorful. And clearly fresh, which was a huge plus. The fries were also really crisp and a nice complement, and I really liked the green aioli (?) sauce that was served with it -- It complemented the fish extremely well.
