Beyond delicious !!!! I was introduced to Hooks years ago and the restaurant just keeps getting better!!!! Do not bother with all of those other tourist trap restaurants!!! Hooks has been consistent with their delicious food and outstanding service. The nachos are amazing, the ahi tuna and shrimp skewers are absolutely delicious, cooked to perfection, bursting with flavor. Oh and the prices ? Don't be fooled by their low prices, the food will not disappoint!!! The house margarita will more than satisfy you, as well as their other beverage choices. It is the most relaxing and friendly restaurant that I have ever been too !!! You can show up with shorts or your swimsuit with a coverup and relax and enjoy the atmosphere!!!! Hook's is a go to each weekend. Great atmosphere, great drinks and food, and great service.

Food and drinks were fine. Sitting at the bar was another matter. Two bartenders getting slammed making drinks for the whole house and also tending to tables in the bar. They were set up to fail by management and based on their inattentive attitude to their bar patrons they weren't happy either. No friendliness and multiple couples waited way too long for a drink or to check out ourselves included. It's tough times for staffing I get it but treating patrons like crap means no repeat business from us. read more

I had high hopes for this place - the place has a cool vibe, nice atmosphere and the menu sounds great. The server was pleasant but the food left a lot to be desired. First, the good: the pulled pork sandwich was pretty tasty as was the chicken taco. The haddock and shrimp (in tacos) were both seasoned and cooked well. The rice and beans were excellent. Disappointing: the beef tacos (both my husband and daughter had these) were flavorless. The shrimp and haddock tacos had tasty elements but somehow, they didn't work well together. It was missing something. My son's quesadilla was burnt but served to him. Lastly, the street corn could have been good but the corn itself was mush. This place is so good! Good food for and great prices! The chips and salsa was good. You do have to pay but it is bottomless. The salsa consistency was more like a bruschetta type salsa but at least it had good flavor! The tacos were so good! Would go back! Especially 4-6p it's half price! You can't beat that. Great food and drinks in a relaxed atmosphere. There is plenty of outdoor seating and live entertainment that makes for a casual and relaxed atmosphere. The food is yummy and a nice change from the everything fried menus that seem to be common place in the area. The drinks were good too - flavorful but not overly sugary/sweet. Have eaten here a few times and was pleased but was so disappointed with my meal last night. I am ok that they didn't have fish for the fish taco, as it was a Sunday night and they don't re-open until Thursday, so I get it, they ran out. So, I opted for grilled shrimp in two tacos. Two shrimp in each taco, only two and they weren't large at all. I cut them each in half to at least maybe get a taste of shrimp in a couple bites. Soft taco shell was dry and fell apart as I bit into it. Hardly no ginger slaw, mostly pineapple salsa. Really, really disappointing for $18. Chips that came with the queso dip were mostly broken, and very stale. Will rethink going here again to eat, may stop for a beer, but honestly not worth the price at all. Our waitress Chelsea made our night about as wonderful as can be. Not only was she attentive to everything we needed ,she was funny and witty and probably one of the best waitresses we have ever had here in Wells /Ogunquit. We came for happy hour and the drinks and happy hour specials were fantastic. We have been here on many occasions with family and they never fail to leave us happy, full, and leave with a smile. This is a wonderful place for family with children, singles or alone. It is very rare that I ever give out five stars but with this establishment and especially our waitress ,certainly earned this. read more

Super friendly staff which was a nice treat since some of the other restaurants in the area did not have great customer service. Our waitress was Ryder and she was prompt and very attentive. Hooks had a major glow up from.3years ago. They started with a smaller limited menu and now they have a larger menu that branches out to all ages. My personal favorite was the quesadilla appetizer grilled chicken sandwich. read more

I want to like this restaurant, I really do. Despite claiming I would never eat there again after last year's bad meal, I was dragged back for one more try. Unfortunately after this, my 3rd visit in as many years, I have to give them even one less star than last year. In fact, if I could give 0 stars I would. First there was the bartender who literally threw our paper beer coasters at us as we were sitting at the bar after giving the space in front of us a cursory swipe with a nasty bar cloth. They were out of the Gritty's Red Claw I tried to order and strangely the bartender tried to tell me I would really love another local IPA in it's place...well that might be true if what I had been trying to order was an IPA. Every drink is served in a plastic cup- the kind that are washable. I really hate drinking my beer from that type of plastic. A woman seated next to us sent her wine back because her plastic cup was obviously dirty...unfortunately our beer cups were dark colored so we were unable to determine the cleanliness of those. That said, the next thing to appear was a plastic dish with some boring taco chips and the most tasteless salsa I have EVER had. It had obviously been sitting out behind the bar for some time, just waiting for the next unsuspecting patron. A look at the menu indicated Hook's was still going for the taste of the Caribbean, but with some tacos and other weird stuff like bbq chicken and lobster roll thrown in. My dining companions ordered the taco trio- chicken, pork, beef. I ordered some spicy salsa verde because nothing on that menu looked appealing to me. When the tacos arrived it was difficult to determine which one was which because all of the meat was so overcooked that it looked the same. Tasting them, the meat was like mush, flavorless and without even basic salt. BBQ sauce was requested in an attempt to give the tacos some much needed flavor; what they serve is your basic bottled version but it did help. The tacos came with a side of "ginger slaw", which was just shredded cabbage with a dab of dressing hastily poured over the top. The "spicy salsa verde" was just some tomatillos ground up in a food processor, with NOTHING ELSE added, not even salt! Unbelievable, and for $5 for a tiny cup, I asked that it be removed from our bill. As we sat at the bar we had the opportunity to watch the bartender pre-mix a big pitcher of margaritas and help himself to a big cup before putting it in the fridge. Periodically he would mop his sweaty forehead with a rag that he kept hanging over his shoulder. Gross. This place is disgusting, dirty, and without a clue as to how to prepare even the most basic of foods. How anyone could give them 4 or 5 stars is beyond me, unless they pay people to write those reviews. UGH. read more

Listen, Hooks is a causal outdoor restaurant attached to a surf shop- that is the vibe. I happen to love the place and its lack of pretense. What's not to love about chips and salsa and drinks after the beach? Get the rum punch or blueberry lemonade. Fish tacos, avocado and shrimp salad, tuna skewers are all wonderful. Amazing food; hope they work out seating issues First the bad...it's really strange to walk into a dining establishment, see 4-5 empty tables, and be told there's a half hour wait for a party of three. Why? I don't understand... Be upfront. If the kitchen is backed up or you're short on wait staff, tell your guests. Then they'll know what's going on. Other guests were equally baffled; when on man said, "Why do I have to wait when there's free tables?" he was told, "Because there's a wait list". OK, that has no meaning. Whatsoever... I'm assuming it was a kitchen backup, because it took over a half hour to get our food. In the meantime, the waitress asked three times how we were doing. By the third time, the response was, "Hungry!". The good...food is awesome. We will be back. Loved the lobster roll - really different! Generous portion of claw meat, but what set it apart is that there was a cilantro lime slaw as a based. Wasn't sure if I'd like it...but I LOVED it! Really terrific! Hubby and daughter loved their entrees as well. Dessert special, a tiramisu cake, was devoured by us; it was very good. read more

I just discovered this place last night with some friends. We happened to wander in when they were doing a joint PBR and O'Neil promotion. Needless to say it was busy but we were able to find a seat at the bar. The beer selection here is great. I was feeling a bit nostalgic and opted for just a 16 ounce PBR. I ordered a fish burrito and some corn salsa. The burrito was cooked perfectly and the salsa was very tasty. The service was very good and the atmosphere was fantastic. Great atmosphere, cold beer, and tasty food. The perfect recipe for success. Do yourself a favor and stop by Hook's next time you're in Ogunquit. A lot was left to be desired. From the outside looks like an amazing place however that was where the greatness really stopped. Drinks, 1 star: Had a margarita that tasted like it had no alcohol in it whatsoever, the mix was fine, but I'm not paying for just mix...by the end of the night I had had four (more on this in a bit) and I've been more buzzed off two beers. Appetizers, 4 stars: The first two baskets of chips we got were stale, however the salsa and guac were delicious so definitely points for that, and our next two refills had much better chips. Meal, 2 stars: first off they ran out of haddock--now my dish, as well as four of the seven others I was with, ordered meals with that fish (fish tacos and coconut crusted) we were told the tacos could sub in mahimahi but I'd have to pick something else (this was a solid 30/45 minutes in our dining experience) I ended up ordering the tuna (same as my brother and dad) and was completely underwhelmed as well as everyone else at our table--the food was nothing to write home about and it came at separate times. To apologize for the uneven arrival of food they offered to buy us a round of drinks a nice, appreciated gesture, however the drinks (as mentioned above) were not very good. Several of the people at my table didn't want to drink theirs which is how I ended up with four (they were fine tasting, just no alcohol) Service, 3 stars: I have no complaints about our waitress, she was in an unfortunate circumstance that I believe was mostly out of her control (long wait times for food, not enough inventory to make the food, etc) but it wasn't above and beyond the standard either Experience, 2 stars: by the end of the night the whole party I was with had decided that it would've been better to just stay at home. The "eh" meal took over two hours, something was on the air that made all of us have burning eyes, and it just wasn't the experience you want when you're paying to go out to eat. My sister and brother in law did like it the first time they went, so I'm not opposed to giving it another shot, but maybe with a much smaller party and making sure they have all the ingredients necessary. read more

I can't believe we didn't come here before after coming to Wells area for years. Always passed by and finally went in for dinner this week. The happy hour specials are awesome...margs were especially good and it was very busy and lively, which is great for drowning out the sounds of 3 year old toddlers. We chose this place in large part due to the fact that it was out of town and had a parking lot. We ended up being here during happy hour and were lucky enough to get half price tacos and $4 margaritas. My MIL, FIL and husband enjoyed tacos of various flavors (my MIL really enjoyed her lobster taco, while my husband said the steak tacos were also great) while I had their chicken skewer with rice. The chicken was seasoned well with just a bit of a kick, and also was larger than what I would have expected to come on a skewer. We all shared chips and salsa (homemade chips and a freshly made pico de gallo type raw salsa) and a couple of us had margaritas (very large and quite potent for $4). The setting was also very pretty with all of us sitting on a big outdoor deck with an awning type cover. Walked into this place on a Saturday night. All other good places in Ogunquit had a wait, but this place didn't (red flag). We asked for a table of 5. The hostess had to clean off a table herself since there was no busboy to be found. After a few minutes we were seated at a table still moist with spray cleaner. Holy crap this place is fantastic! We went on our vacation and ended up going back with more family members to share the experience. Food: fresh, homemade and simple - I can't even explain how great their chipotle crema is! Drinks: creative with a smattering of house-infused spirits. Their rum punch is not for the tame, but it is as smooth as can be. Atmosphere: great during the day to chill out; lively and fun at night. Yikes. A Mexican restaurant serving bagged tortilla chips?! We got the bottom of the bag with lots of crumbs. The pico was excessively watery. I ordered the lobster tacos and asked for some allergy substitutions and had to send it back when it arrived with sour cream. The ginger slaw was tasty. I notice that Hooks has some really poor reviews, although many of them are old. We went there on a Friday afternoon for lunch. No cocktails, so I can't report on that. I'll start with the positives: Very Friendly hostess and waiter. Food was perfectly cooked and tasted delicious. Price was very reasonable. Vibe/decor was nice. What needed improvement: Drink order was brought incorrectly. Everyone makes mistakes, not really a big deal. The wait for the table AND the food was borderline excruciating. -- we DID go on a Saturday night, so a small wait to be seated was expected. But it ended up being 35 minutes for a table for two. And then the food took another 45 minutes after ordering. Not sure what the mix up there is with this place. But if you don't mind a wait on a busy night for good food. Give it a shot. read more

5/22/2015 --- under new ownership, I am thrilled with how delicious the food is. Night 2 in a row of eating here and we'll definitely finish out the weekend. Extended family dinner had something for everyone -- chicken burrito was seasoned amazingly and the ingredients are so fresh!! We also had some steak tacos, shrimp tacos, lobster taco and the chicken skewers. This did not disappoint. Craft beer on tap and a nice wine selection. Is great as a family oriented group to have a relaxing outdoor dinner at a family friendly restaurant with super fresh ingredients and great tunes. Will be making a summer of this spot!!! read more

I would also like to highlight the stars of the show which were their mojitos and their endless chips and salsa ( pico de Gallo... Not salsa) . These were super delicious and I would highly recommend them. Unfortunately we also decided to try their taco salad and it all lacked a ton of flavor. Which is what would have made this a solid four starts establishment to only a solid place for drinks and chips and lounging. I would be weary to try some of the other food. read more

Went there on a Tuesday night in July when we were absolutely starving because every other restaurant between Kennebunk and Hooks on Rt 1 was impossible to get into. We spotted it from the road and were thrilled to get easy parking and a quick table. Everything on the menu sounded great but some in our party were put off by the lack of potatoes on the menu. It's definitely not a steak and burger place - which is ok. We all had the clam chowder while we waited for the gigantic nacho appetizer to arrive. We loved the chowder and the nachos. Some of the best of both that I have ever had. The only issue was that the chowder was luke warm. Actually not an issue when you are as hungry as we were but an unfortunate sign of things to come. We all had some version of their tacos with assorted sides - the $4 per item sides menu is very appealing. We had noticed the table nearby with four guys obviously enjoying the macaroni salad so we really wanted to try that. When the tacos arrived we each noticed that the meat portion was also luke warm. The tacos sounded good but in reality had too many toppings and the temperature was a huge turn off. The prices were good - you can get a variety of tacos in quantities of 1, 2 or 3 with one side with corresponding prices. Sadly, the macaroni salad was dry and felt like a bad choice to accompany my steak taco. Others had the rice and beans and enjoyed them but felt that the beans were super salty. Overall, the reasonable prices prevented us from complaining. The best parts of the meal - the chowders and nachos were a mixed bag. The cups of chowder were like $5 each and were small but tasty portions. The nachos were huge but pretty expensive for chips and cheese with a dollop of crema and guac. $16 is enough to make you think twice but they were one of the highlights of the meal - probably because of the sriracha mayo drizzled over them. The waitress was sweet and hard working. A live guitar player was there and provided a nice background in a pretty cool place with a Key West meets ski resort vibe. So, in conclusion, great price for most of their menu items. Great service. Cool vibe (completely open to the air with a few roof areas and walls). This place initially struck me as a dive, but since it was in walking distance of our hotel and had Mexican fare, we decided to give it a try. We chose to avoid the wait and eat inside. The interior design was much brighter and more comfortable than I would have imagined. A little on the loud side, due to the fact that the bar takes up a third of the interior dining area, but it was a lively and fun atmosphere filled with "laid back beach music". The mixed drinks were creative and in the $8-$10 range. Steak & veggie tacos were delicious! The Coconut Dream dessert, as I think it was called, was awesome! Grilled pineapple and mango over two scoops of toasted coconut ice cream with caramel drizzle. Our server, Gillian was very attentive. DON'T EAT HERE!!! This place has the worst service and management I've ever experienced in my entire life. I ordered the salmon with the balsamic glaze. When it came to the table it smelled insanely fishy and when I tried it it was definitely off. So I sent it back and I said can you please just take this off it's very fishy and I really am not able to eat it. (When I sent the dish back it was a full plate of food as I didn't eat any of the vegetables and only had a small piece of the dish to confirm that it was fishy, and not just a smell around me from another table) the server took it away asked me if I wanted anything else, but I didn't because the smell and the taste really just put me off to eating anything else. When the bill came the salmon was still on the bill. Keep in mind this is a $20 entree. I told the server about the charge and she said "yeah I talked to my manager and she refused to take it off". To which I said I'd like to see said manager. The manager comes out and says to me I hear you didn't like the fish. I said it wasn't that I didn't like it the fish was incredibly fishy and off. She says well we all tasted it back there and salmon is a very oily fish and it's fresh we got it yesterday so there is nothing wrong with it and I can't justify taking off a $20 entree just because you didn't like it. (Excuse me I thought that you're in the customer service industry whether or not I didn't like it I didn't eat it it shouldn't have been on my bill) to which I said so you're telling me I paid for you all to eat my food back there. She laughs and says no that's not entirely true. Yes absolutely that's true you ate all of it and now you're telling me I have to pay for it. I tell the manager that I eat salmon all the time. The reason why so many people like salmon is that it's not a fishy fish. Yes it does have more oil running through it but that's because it's high in omega-3 fatty acids just because of fish is oily like tuna is oily does not mean it should taste fishy in any way. The rule of thumb is that if your fish smells of anything other than Salt Water it's bad. My boyfriend could see that I was getting incredibly upset so we chose the manager listen she didn't eat it, anything you could do to help us out in this situation would be greatly appreciated the manager rolls her eyes and says I'll see what I can do. The server not the manager brings back the check and the manager gives us $5 off. What was the point seriously what a slap in the face. If you want to be treated well and you want good customer service don't eat here because God forbid something is wrong with the food and you send it back you'll still be paying for it. Thank God I didn't take the server up on getting something else when she asked me if I wanted anything else because I bet the manager would have charged me for both dishes. Literally the worst customer service I have ever experienced and probably will ever experience. Last time I checked you wouldn't have the business if people didn't come in and eat. I'm going to close this was saying I work in a five star restaurant and if any person at my table for any reason didn't like something they ordered I would either get them something new or take it off their bill because that's what you do in the customer service industry that's how you keep people coming back to your business.
