I really wanted to try this place bc of all the great reviews but to be honest, I left with a different feeling! The service was sub par, at check in they seemed disorganized with to go orders and seating people. The restaurant was busy but not overly packed. Our server wasn't anything to brag about and forgot our drink! The atmosphere was spot on for a bar scene. What did we order: -Nashville chicken Sandwhich (very spicy, we like spicy but this was very spicy) - Fish & Chips (great, relish based tarter sauce) - Light beer (good) - the fries were what everyone was raving about, they were good French fries but didn't understand the hype. I would try elsewhere next time read more

We enjoyed a very nice dinner at Hopcat. It was a Friday night and the Griffins were playing at the Van Andel so it was very busy. Luckily we had a reservation through OpenTable. We were seated as soon as we arrived. I had the dirty Shirley drink and I didn't care for it as much. It was good, but nothing over the top. For an appetizer we had the elote queso dip. It was outstanding. For my main entree I had the Buffalo Mac and cheese, which was also incredible. I really liked the big noodles. The sauce was so creamy and thick. Of course I had to have some cosmik French fries while we were there too. Those never disappoint and were rated the top 10 best French fries in the USA! They really are that good. My boyfriend had the hangover helper burger and ate it all so fast I didn't get a picture in time. Our waitress was very kind and attentive to our party of 6. She was patient and timely. The restaurant has nice bathrooms and their drink menu is extensive. You do have to pay for parking in the city of GR. We parked at the parking garage attached the the van andel and that was a quick walk to Hopcat. Overall we had a pleasant visit and will be back! read more

The food was wonderful the service was top notch our waiter was attentive funny and chill. I truly loved the atmosphere . I found it clever almost like an old German Bier Haus . I've been to several Hop Cats but have never taken the time to review. Love the business model of only having that states beer on draft. For an absolute beer nerd like me who ONLY drinks local no matter where I travel this is spot-on. Great food as well from apps to burgers and great soups and salads. Came in town for a concert and this place was around the corner from the venue!! They did not disappoint at all!!! Pricing for the menu was amazing!! a chill spot in downtown Grand Rapids! i was staying at Hyatt Place when i visited HopCat, and it was less than a 10 min walk thru safe streets. i am a big cider drinker and was pleasantly surprised at their massive cider selection! first night i came i got the Blake's Sir Lushington which was 9%, but my second visit i opted for the Mad Farmer Four Berry Pie Cider (6%) the bartender had let me sample the night before. delish! cosmik fries were also bomb. amazing beer selection and chill vibe. Such a great stop! Loved the beer selection! I opted for a cider and my mom had a glass of wine. We asked the server for recommendations and he recommended the grill cheese and the bikini bottom salad. We ordered both. The recommendations were spot on! We loved both dishes! The Salad was so good! If was packed full of fresh ingredients. We also split the grilled cheese. So so so so good! We were seated in a cozy booth and the service was so great! Great stop! read more

Good/large portion. Grilled cheese was sweet from the apple slices in it; I could have gone without. Served with tomato soup which isn't like your typical kind, but I enjoyed. Known for their "cosmic fries" which has some type of seasoning I could do with or without, but most importantly their fries are crispy. Service was nice, not as attentive, but sufficient. read more

My husband and went to HopCat on Tuesday, we got their early so we could get a table for 7 adults and 3 children I guess that was a problem with the host because we were getting sat when host # 2 came around the corner and rudely told host #1 she wasn't going to sit us there, the second host turns to us and said in the most disrespectful way is your whole party hear? No we said we came early to get a table, she proudly said well I don't know your kids ages?? Wtf? I said we need just chairs for them the host turned away and never came back to us until we were all in the door, so we waited 15 minutes for our entire party to be present and then she turns and sits us at a totally empty room?? We felt unwelcome and I have never seen such rudeness!!! So it was a very unpleasant experience!!! read more

Stopped here for after graduation dinner. We had a party of 12 and had excellent service from Allie, thank you. Food was excellent, from the appetizers to the main dishes. All were super. We especially liked the dill pickle sandwich and grilled cheese. read more

When I showed the manager that I ate cheese paper with my food he immediately gaslight me by telling me it wasn't a big deal and it happens all the time and it's okay. We were there an hour and a half because the wait was ridiculous for a mostly empty restaurant that was out of half of what we wanted to order. I still feel sick from knowing I ate so much paper. We loved hopcat but will not return to the downtown location ever. read more

Service was a little slow because it was crowded. Excellent beer selection. I did not get the 2 staff members names, but I wanted to call out the excellent way they interacted with someone that was experiencing mental health issues. Was that person bothering other guests, yes. However, the compassion the staff had for this person was amazing. They calmly spoke to him. They listened to what he was saying. The person then left the area. I'm not sure if the guy is always around so they knew him, but I was very impressed. Ok, so this really doesn't talk about the restaurant, but they have some great caring people that work here. read more

Brunch...underwhelming. Service was fine, we like the atmosphere, so decided to try brunch with the Bloody Mary bar. One house-made mix (good enough), Zing Zing and a pretty sparse selection of add-ins. No pickle spears, no cheese chunks, etc. Green onions, celery, parsley and some tired olives. The food is good, the beer list is excellent, and the service is great. My family had a get-together of over 20 people from ages 3 to 85 and rented the loft in the downtown branch, a great old space with cast-iron Corinthian columns. We couldn't have been taken care of any better. In fact, when we arrived, we found a beautiful flower arrangement and card from the staff (the occasion being a post-funeral meal). We really felt hosted rather than merely accommodated! I would visit again in a heartbeat for any group occasion. read more

I was hankering for their cosmik fries and fish sandwich, last Friday. Lots of changes from the old days, but still a fun experience. always lively, and a great time of socializing at the bar. Ate here for a friends birthday and i was NOT PLEASED!! Waiter was cranky and lazy 3 out of the 5 dishes we ordered had LONG hairs in them that were most likely from the Server who then got upset that we found HER hair in OUR food... The GM apologized and assured us they were remaking the food that then took 15 more minutes for the burgers and almost 30 minutes for them to bring me 8 Chicken Wings T when i ordered 10 not to mention the wings were COLD...that was it not even a discount on the food nothing.. Have you ever ate a grilled cheese and in between each bite you have to stop and say "omg this is so dang good" to whomever is near to hear? Whelp, that was me. The grilled cheese and the side of tomato soup is a classic. Simple. Good. To the point. HopCat flipped this classic into an epic explosion of heavenly flavor. There were freaking apples in the grilled cheese! Apples!!! Don't knock it til you try it. The restaurant was a total vibe on top of great food. And the beer selection was a mile long. What a horrible place!!!! Yes, they do have a great beer selection but their prices are WAY too high and the service sucks. I have given them the benefit of the doubt and have been there a total of 4 times. This last time we went there there were about 15 of us in our group. Everyone was ordering 2 drinks at a time because our server was pretty much non-existant. At one point after sitting there with an empty beer glass for 15 minutes I finally went to the bar to get a beer. I got my beer and then pointed to my table and asked if he would put the beer on my tab that I had started with my waitress and told him not to worry because I had cash in my hand for a tip for him. He told me that since I had a server that I had to order from her and that he could not serve me. I explained to him that my beer had been empty for 15 minutes and she was nowhere in sight and that was the only reason why I went to the bar to get it. He then told me to go sit down and that he would send her over as soon as she came in from smoking out back by the dumpsters. SERIOUSLY?!?! Then I told him I would just pay cash for the beer if that worked better than him trying to tell her to ring up the beer. He told me he couldn't do that either. Anyone sitting at a table HAD to get their drinks from their waiter/waitress. No exceptions. He then took the beer that he had poured for me and gave it to one of his friends, for free, that was sitting at the bar. Then later on that night our waitress knocked over a friends beer into his lap. She was obviously embarassed and asked if he wanted another one and he said yes and came out with it about 10 minutes later. When we got our checks the waitress had charged my friend for the beer that she brought to replace the one she spilled. When he pointed it out that she overcharged him she said that he had to pay for the replacement beer because she asked him if he wanted another and therefore he "ordered" it. He asked for a manager and he sided with the server. He told the manager that not only was the spill her fault but the beer got all over his expensive suit and were they going to do anything about that. The manager told him no, that it looked like his suit was drying just fine and the dark beer stain on his shirt would probably wash out with a couple of washes. Was super excited to visit this place, but upon my arrival realized that there were many other people who planned a visit as the same time as me; which is usually a good sign but in this case it was somewhat confusing. I never was greeted nor was told of the seating arrangements. There was not a host stand nor sign indicating what the seating arrangements were. I had to basically find out for myself after monitoring the room for 15 minutes to figure out that it was open seating. Took a good five minutes before we were greeted by anyone once we did land a table (in any other place I probably would have walked out) but once we finally did get greeted, the service staff was great and friendly. Had the Turkey Burger, it was excellent. The beer was good, I didn't get to sample as many as I would have liked but was happy to see my old friend Hacker-Pschorr! My boyfriend loved the decor in the men's room; women's restroom was clean and stocked. They were badly understaffed (not sure if there was a special event that day in Grand Rapids they didn't know about or that they just didn't have enough help scheduled on hand for the day) but whatever the case, I'm sure it runs smoother when they have the proper staff on to handle the volume. AVOID THIS PLACE AT ALL COSTS. I paid a huge amount of $ for a sandwich, and it didn't even come with a side like some chips or fries. I mean, come on, $9 and not even a few chips that cost them like a few pennies to add? Service was AWFUL, waitress seemed unhappy and irritated by us, waited 15 minutes just to be waited on. no offers to refill soda. no attempts to offer special or any drink menu. It was seat yourself, so you'd no idea where to go. Outside on patio, they allowed a DOG. a dog? in a friggin restaurant where serving food? couldn't find place outside so busy. inside it was super dark, and terribly loud and obnoxious. Ok seriously my Favorite place to go for "bar food" My absolute favorite meal, meaning never order anything else is "The Dip" which comes with the Cosmic fries accompanied by the delicious cheese sauce. I wish I loved closer to Hopcat, because it's an amazing place, but it's probably good I don't because I save a lot of money by not living close by. Hopcat always has an amazing tap list, including beers they brew themselves. They also have a very good bottle list, including bottles you can buy and take home with you. I have not had the pleasure of trying any of their food, but from everything I hear, it is amazing. The Hopcat is a great place to go with friends for dinner or drinks. With a smoke free enviornment downstairs and smoking upstairs there is room for everyone. Their selection of Microbrews is never ending, and the even pass shot glasses around with free samples of their selected beers of the week which they have listed on their menu of daily specials.
