I had breakfast at Hope & Olive a few years ago and was not impressed, but decided to give it another go for dinner this time. Service was slow and my beer was warm-ish. My burger, which I ordered medium, arrived RARE. I sent it back and it returned WELL DONE, but I was hungry, so I kept it and ate about half. The server, who was very nice, apologized, but of course it wasn't her fault. The folks next to us ordered burgers, too, and theirs were also not cooked to their specifications....not even close, really. My dining partner ordered the mozzarella and arugala sandwich was was good, but I totally could make it at home. She also ordered a Cherry Cosmopolitan which was YUMMY and we replicated it at home the next night. The pot de creme dessert was delicious. I do think something should have been comped because my meal was wrong twice! I won't go again. People's Pint is so, so much better if you're in Greenfield! read more

Always an incredible visit. Not only is the food and atmosphere excellent but they are some of the nicest people you will ever have in a restaurant experience. They accommodate for various diets (always enough for vegetarians, gluten free, etc) and they source the freshest, most local ingredients. From the entrees to the "bar food" to the tap selection to the freshest and best cocktails, I am always into it. I evne like the art on the walls every time. On top of all that, they host a monthly charity event called "Soup & Games Night" where all the tips go to a local organization. And the occasional event/party they throw is always a blast. We came across Hope and Olive on a family trip to the Berkshires. What a great meal!! It says a lot when my whole family can finish their plates and then rave about it to each other. As for the staff, when we arrived without a reservation we were told it would be a couple of minutes. Because our kids were hungry my wife asked about other restaurants and they had no problem sharing other locations. Glad we stayed! They were so nice. The food is fantastic, the drinks are the best and the atmosphere is great. They always have a bar menu posted on a chalkboard. The Brussel sprouts are so yummy and the portion is ridiculously large. There is something for everyone here, bring on the vegans, vegetarians, milk free, paleo, gluten free diners.. oh.. the creme brulee? tap tap tap, like Amelie and delight in creamy perfection. OK, now I have to go right over for lunch, I made myself hungry. Add to that their Soup and Games night the first Monday of the month. Every month the owners choose a different non profit to benefit. They provide free soup (and so do a number of Greenfield area restaurants) and a bakery donates the bread. There are games or you can bring your own. All the money (not just tips!!!!) is donated to the cause. How can you not LOVE a place that is this involved in the community, has the best, freshest, LOCAL (see their chalkboard as you enter) food cooked in imaginative ways. The food was excellent, but the service was even better. Our party of 4 arrived with 2 babies. If you have dined out with young children you know that more often than not you will get shoved into a corner with all the other parents and you will be, largely, ignored. This was not the case at Hope & Olive! Our children were treated as though they were actual human beings and patrons. The person serving our table helped keep hot food away from exploring fingers and was very quick to clear dishes we were no longer using to help us seamlessly enjoy our food and conversation. This is a quirky place. If you examine the menu, you will see that maybe the only ethnic example that isn't represented is sushi. They offer Vietnamese, Mexican, Polish, Middle Eastern/Mediterranean, Italian, Thai, Jewish, and a good representation of vegetarian...there must be more. We were intrigued. We can only speak to the falafel burger and the fattoush salad. Both were okay. However, instead of a round ball, the falafel was a flat affair which meant that it was dry. Additionally, both the falafel and the fattoush had waaay too much tzatziki. The fries were overdone as well. Service is good and everyone is friendly. We could *maybe* try it again, but since we were on a day trip from Boston, it's unlikely. The biggest miss was a wow factor. Perhaps the issue is an attempt to please every palate. I had resisted going for a while - my in-laws kept raving about the place and then would remark about how they make vegan and vegetarian entrees too. As a dedicated carnivore, that last part turned me off every time. But it was a special occasion and deep down, I wanted to give it a try so I relented. I WILL be back. The maple roasted brussels sprouts were fantastic. I'm not a huge fan of brussels sprouts but these were so tasty. The outer leaves turned a little crispy, sort of like the leaves of a fried onion, and had just a touch of the maple flavor that offset the bitterness you sometimes get with brussels sprouts. Others at my table ordered the calamari & the mussels and raved about them. I had the haddock cakes with warm potato chips, baked beans and red cabbage slaw. The cakes were light and flaky and for a while I really doubted that they had been fried. They weren't the least bit oily but had a crisp outer layer. The fish was mild and sweet, seasoned with some dill and celery. The beans had a hint of heat to them and were enjoyable too. Everyone at the table was more than happy with their meals and desserts. I shared an orange creme brulee. Others ordered the chocolate cake and the salted caramel cheesecake. The chocolate cake was fantastic, but the couple of bites of the cheesecake I had were not just salty, but SALTY. I would not have been happy with it, but it wasn't mine. Our party of 6 got out of there for $200 (before tip) - 3 appetizers, 6 entrees, 3 desserts & 5 cocktails. For the quality I found this price to be extremely reasonable. I even had enough food left over to make a second meal of my entree. Service was absolutely wonderful - I wish I could remember our waiters name (I'm the worst with names) but he bore a passing resemblance to an un-tattooed Bob Harper. He was very pleasant and prompt and despite being busy was very upbeat and helpful with questions about the menu and for refills on beverages. read more

Alas, the famous brussel sprouts are gone so that was a bit disappointing. The combination appetizer of medaterranian foods was quite tasty - the falafal was the best we've ever had. The bbq meatloaf with sweet potato fries and collard greens featured a well made meatloaf, tasty bourbon bbq sauce, and homemade fries. The greens were ok but hadn't been washed well with some grit. I'm a pork fan so the tenderloin was dynomite with almost cooked rape and another veggie with a mustard sauce. A real nice place in the middle of rural. read more

Visited again on 5/7/15 and still excellent, friendly service and wonderful local food. It's the one place that I focus on vegetarian offerings due to the quality of produce and unique plates. The recent visit included Curry Carrot Salad, Fried Broccoli with Tahini-Yogurt Sauce, and Coffee-Chilli rubbed boneless Pork Ribs with Chimmichurri sauce. All excellent. Add to that a Campari Grapefruit Margarita and it made for a perfect meal. I can't recommend this restaurant highly enough. read more

Hope and olive has been my absolute favorite restaurant in the area for many years, and I've given countless recommendations to costumers that I've served about this place! I truly cannot express enough how impressed I am by their management. The ambiance, food quality, epic cocktails, and EXCEPTIONAL service should be enough to convince anyone, but on top of all that what truly baffles me is that the prices are shockingly accessible. And again, the service is on point. Every single server and bartender that I've met there has been phenomenal, and the decor of the place just really makes you feel like you've been welcomed into someone's home. We have been going to Hope and Olive for years on and off the people are very nice the decor is up beat/cool very pleasant and the food sounds so good on the menu however it really is not! there are too many complicated sides on the entrees. many times you have no idea what they are. We ate there tonight my husband had the ribs they were dry and tasteless my friend had the crabcakes with greasy mashed potatoes, hush puppies and two other sides that he couldn't identify I had the tofu peanut bowl there was rice and sweet potato fries and an egg, tofu, mushrooms peas, radish with peanut sauce it was way too complicated and I got a bellyache. Preface - I've had lunch at H&O a few times, and dinner 5-6 times over the past couple of years. Until this last experience, H&O was a solid 4-5, for its creative menu, solid execution, welcoming atmosphere and decent service. Sadly, our experience with a group of six the other evening was a disappointment. There were still a good number of enticing dishes on the menu, at least per description. We ordered several different entrees, and shared plates and thoughts with one another. ALL of the menu selections generated excitement as read - but the execution for ALL was rather lacking. Specifically - the Thai Tofu Bowl sounds yummy, but was plain and boring, no spice, no kick or interest in the peanut sauce. The tofu itself was nicely fried, but devoid of any seasoning. Where was the curry in the Chicken Curry? Let me know if you find it, as this chicken lacked flavor and spice (not just curry), in contrast to the Thai Chicken Thighs I've had for lunch in the past which were excellent. No mention of spicy for the Pistachio Crusted Salmon - it was unexpectedly spicy, though still welcome (you might mention the spice in the description.) However, the pistachios must have gone somewhere else than on this fish. Still tasty, though no excuse for the accompanying undercooked potatoes. The Singapore Mei Fun Curry Noodles also read deliciously, but were way too vinegary and missing curry (I did not even taste curry in the dish - weird.) A great assortment of veggies came w/ the noodles, but there was no effort to integrate them at all with the noodles. And on...sadly, too, the service was just "meh" - my wife had to ask for iced tea three times before it finally appeared - at which point we were finished eating. Close to five minutes spanned from when the first entrees reached the table and the last arrived - just keep everything kitchen-side until you can serve the entire party. And it was not all that busy. Overall, it felt that the final execution of the food and delivery was missing - great ideas, potentially delicious dishes, but each seriously lacking on this night. I write this with the "hope" that H&O will get their act together. New chef? Off night? I'll be back to find out, and will write of that experience at what I still consider Greenfield's signature restaurant. read more

We had dinner at Hope and Olive on a recent warm Sunday evening. As we entered the dimly lit, crowded restaurant we were greeted by the owner himself and immediately shown to a booth. It was a bit cramped for our group of five, but we were happy not to have had to wait for a seat. Anyone concerned about Covid might want to think twice about dining at Hope and Olive as outdoor seating wasn't available when we were there in mid May. The servers were masked, but that was about as protective as an umbrella in a hurricane since no one else in the restaurant was. Nevertheless, service was excellent, particularly by our cheery, helpful, accommodating waiter -- a young man with a slight Canadian accent. Our orders were taken quickly, and drinks and food arrived without delay. Now, as for the food itself, it was a bit uneven -- some of it pretty good, some of it not so much. The fairly limited menu leans toward lighter, vegetable-forward fare We all started off with salads, which were huge -- no complaints about portion size here. My Caesar salad was a big mound of shredded romaine lettuce lightly dressed with a rather bland, underseasoned dressing and topped with a few croutons that were more chewy than crisp -- not bad, but nothing to write home about. For an entree I had the fried chicken with sweet-potato waffles. The chicken -- two pieces of skinless, boneless breast meat -- was left in the fryer perhaps a bit too long. Rescued at the last minute, it came out a dark mahogany brown on the outside and dry on the inside. I would have preferred skin-on, bone-in pieces, but the chicken was tasty enough, its desiccated state notwithstanding. The sweet-potato waffles, however, were dreadful -- leaden, doughy, and flavorless. They looked and tasted as though they'd been sitting in a cooler for days and then resurrected, inexpertly, in a microwave just before serving. Phooey! Other accompaniments to the chicken were braised collard greens and a shredded carrot salad, both quite good. Two of my companions had the green enchilada entree, a vegetarian concoction they both raved about -- the high point of the menu. Another had the shrimp and crab scampi, which looked a bit soupy to me but which she enjoyed. I forgot to mention a complimentary starter of bread and butter. Just as well since the bread tasted stale -- eminently skippable. We forwent dessert at the restaurant (although the chocolate cake was tempting) in favor of an after-dinner walk down Main Street to Ice Cream Alley -- a good way to end a pleasant evening. read more

It's clear they use great quality ingredients, they have fun w/ the menu, and the service was excellent! I had the local burger not expecting to be surprised but it was very flavorful! It had nice thick slices of quality bacon, fresh portabellas, and sharp cheddar. When I asked for a ginger ale I expected the usual bar soda, but I got a ginger beer! I agree with other reviewers that H&O can be hit or miss. But when it's a hit, it's great! And for us it is usually a hit. Certainly when you consider what's around this area, H&O is worth a visit. The food is always fresh, even when not perfectly executed. But more often than not, we have really enjoyed Hope and Olives. We had a fried onion appetizer one time that I still dream about! It was fantastic (and I don't order fried anything often.) We enjoy sitting at the bar for late night food. We've always had great service by pleasant people, who are attentive, but not obnoxious. The maitre de is always welcoming and seems to understand that dining out (as is doing business in general) is optional. read more

First time here and now I know why part of the restaurant name is "hope" you better hope you get waited on! Sat at the bar. They had multiple (at least 3) bartenders and it took quite awhile for anyone to even acknowledge us. After being ignored for almost 10 minutes we were finally provided with a drink menu. We were hungry and asked for a dinner menu too. Apparently they choose when you can or cannot order off the dinner menu. The bartenders who decided to ignore us also decided that we were not going to have dinner at the bar but if we wanted a table they could seat us in 2 minutes. We were told that they were too overwhelmed in the kitchen to serve us at the bar but not too overwhelmed to serve us at a table?! We took that as a sign and walked out. read more

Just had another fabulous brunch at H&O's today. The sausage they serve is to die for. And the bacon? Perfect! And the give you like, a mound of it for 3 bucks. But here's the thing-I ate nothing but that brunch all day and when I took my daily mountain hike of 3.5 miles I did it 6 minutes faster than the day before. I think it was the waffle. This isn't just food folks! And the service, as everyone else says, is superb. The people who work there seem to enjoy what they do sooo much. THANKS YOU GUYS!!! You are fabulous. read more

I have never written a review before and especially about one of my favorite restaurants. I have always enjoyed my experience here and the food always delicious. My negative review is how uncaring and how unwelcome the staff was while we waited outside in the extreme cold for the place to open. My husband and I arrived along with another elderly woman about 10 minutes before they were to open. I have a broken leg and was balancing on crutches. As we stood outside the door trying to get some attention we were totally ignored until it was exactly 5:00 pm opening. We were cold and I was very angry that they would be so callous and uncaring about their customers. They could have let us in to the vestibule to be at least warm while we waited for the opening. After dining there almost every week I do not think we will return after how we were treated. read more

Cool bar area and a trendy little place for Greenfield. A nice alternative in a town that is fairly vanilla. However, I think that the food is costly, and their attempt at innovation creates some pretty icky combinations of food. In addition, sometimes when I order I expect that my meal will be something completely different than it is when it comes. They should try sticking to their descriptions instead of attempting to create "trendy" dishes. Their bruch is fantastic though! read more

Good food. Not exactly inexpensive, but they give you huge portions and you don't feel like you overpaid. There is certainly some room for improvement, but they are really doing everything else right. For the food alone, I would probably give four stars, but I've been very impressed with the atmosphere and service here. They get very busy and crowded on active nights. I sat in their little lounge area waiting for a table for quite some time, maybe 45 minutes, but it didn't feel like it at all. They served us drinks and appetizers while we waited for our table.
