What a cute little place... and LOVE the owners! We were recently in the area for a drive to look at the fall foliage and discovered this little spot, which we heard was pretty popular with the locals. We definitely understand the appeal, as the food was good, the drinks were good, and the staff were great. We likely ordered too much fried food while there (and it all tasted great), but next time I might substitute some of the fried fare with a salad. But our eyes were drawn to the other tables around us where patrons were chomping on fried pickles (yum), French fries (tasty enough), and onion rings (outstanding). My only recommendations to the owners would be to stick a few more healthy items. Before I close out, I must send another shout out to the owners (a husband and wife team who were staffing the place the day we visited). They are awesome!! I loved the conversations with them and would return to Horseshoe just for drinks and a chuckle... and the onion rings! Final thoughts = check this place out if nearby, but be sure to balance the fried food with a salad. read more

You won't see signs from the highway and it's one of those places you have to search for, but when you do...you'll find a really warm bar interior that's like going back in time and food that is served with great care. The burgers, fries and onion rings just look amazing. You'll wait awhile to get a menu, but the care and attention makes it worth your time. There's enough to see on the walls to keep yourself busy anyway. I had a cheeseburger and mozzarella cheesesticks, both made to order and to perfection. Worth your time. Dates back to the 40's. Not a lot of seating, maybe enough for 20-25. Decent bistro food, but honestly not the best for the price, and almost a 45 minute wait for the food. Menu isn't very extensive, only fried fare and sandwiches. Great little spot on the big curve in the road. Tracee does the cooking and my fish sandwich was tasty and massive and I washed it down with a Richmond Brewery lager beer. This place takes you back in time, just good food in a very warm atmosphere. If you are hiking the Appalachian Trail, step off and get some great food and conversation. A buddy of mine and I found this place after a little hike because it was mentioned on the sign at the bottom of the trailhead. It's a charming little spot full of entertaining signs and other interesting memorabilia. Jimmy was working and served us a few beers and burgers which were perfect after the hike. Jimmy is a chill guy, he told us a bit about the history of the place including the mythical Jackalope which is mounted on the back wall. Legend has it that a local man shot the fierce Jackalope with a slingshot as it charged him out front restaurant one Tuesday morning. He managed to kill the beast with one perfectly placed shot to the kidney and it's been inside since. BEWARE THE JACKALOPE! My fiancee mentioned this place, that she had read about it in a review way back in 1999 and recommended we visit every time we visited Bluemont, about an hour outside DC. It's a bit of a roadhouse, a bit of a pub. We visited on a Sunday evening, right before the kitchen closed and managed to get in two orders of the Flamin' Red Fish. All waiting was done by one person (who was also bartender). Lightly breaded, fresh fish with freshly cut fried potato wedges (where were more like thick fries). Having grown up on the Gulf Coast eating fish almost like bread, I was extremely happy with my food. There is often musical entertainment and the environment is very colorful with funny, eccentric signs and knick-knacks posted all over the place, including Christmas tree lights strung across the ceiling. You want minimalism but deliciousness? You must pay them a visit. The menu doesn't have many items but what they do have is delicious. They only take cash or checks and your receipt basically consists of calculations written on a blank piece of notepad paper. read more

My boyfriend and I were staying at Rosemont Manor in Berryville, and according to Yelp, this was only bar closer than 10 miles away. Sweet. Had to check it out on the way back from some wine tasting so we didn't go to bed at 9:30 pm again. Struck up an immediate conversation with the bar owners (one of which turned out to have gone to my school and had a fascinating life story), made friends with the dogs, enjoyed being in the "local" scene. We were out exploring and wanted to try Something different. According to yelp this was the place. We walked in and were immediately talk to buy two very lovely ladies who were extremely friendly and helpful. We got basic food... Hamburgers, fries, onion rings...incredibly large portions. Like crazy large. I kinda felt guilty like I had to apologize for not eating everything. But we ended up taking it home and the kids got to eat big meals off of just my husband and my basic food order. Definitely a walk in history... It reminds you of the old 80s restaurants/diners. I have a hard time with this one. If you're looking for a beer and wine bar, then yes, this is great, especially since there are so few choices for such a thing between Purcellville and Berryville. They have a decent selection of local breweries represented, and their prices weren't low, but they weren't high, either. This place is kind of unapologetically a bar, which would be fine, except they advertise themselves as a restaurant. (Which Virginia kind of requires, but still....) If you're looking for a restaurant, then no. This isn't great at all. With the one exception of the French fries (that they do very well), everything tastes pre-prepared, frozen, or canned. The roast beef meal that everyone raves about is sliced roast beef, fatty and gristly, that is WAY over cooked (and I tend to like my meats medium well to well done, so...) and drowned in an awful canned gravy that tastes more like dishwater than meat drippings. The hamburgers were clearly mass produced and about the quality you'd get at a concession stand, as are the chicken fingers. In short, the meals are not why you'd want to come here. At all. As for the rest, the space itself is small, but cozy, and it's covered with memorabilia from days past. Unfortunately, all that memorabilia also holds a ton of dust and cobwebs. Looking up from our table, we could see huge dust and web clumps hanging off pieces that were potentially over your food. Someone else had mentioned something about the service and I need to agree. The woman owner is very kind and pleasant. However, her husband sits around on his butt while his wife runs back and forth serving customers and working her a** off, and when he does have to get up and interact with the tables, he's gruff and unfriendly at best. They also have live music which can be fun if you're into that, but it's a very small space with very hard woods and a loud band becomes deafening quickly. I'm glad I went because I've answered the question I've had about the place for years, but unfortunately the answer is "uhhh, no." read more
