    Negi-hama maki
    Della S.

Love the sashimi here but the maki is okay. I saw that the reviews for Hoshi Ya are pretty positive so I decided to try them out. Like others have mentioned, delivery takes about an hour, but I was prepared to wait so it was not too bad. I ordered the sashimi combo entree ($26.95), negi-hama maki ($5.50), volcano maki ($6.95), and the torched white tuna maki ($11.95). The sashimi combo entree came with one of those small cardboard takeout boxes full of rice. It also came with a pretty big container of miso soup. The miso soup was underseasoned. There were 5 different cuts of fish with 3 pieces each, and all of the fish was super fresh and buttery. The pieces of fish were of a reasonable size. I'd probably skip the combo next time and just order the sashimi separately, since the rice and miso soup were pretty underwhelming. I wasn't particularly blown away by the maki. The negi-hama maki was alright, the fish was fresh but the rice wasn't super flavorful. The other two rolls I ordered were drenched in sauce so it was difficult to taste the flavor of the fish. The rolls were thin so the portion of fish was small to begin with. At the same time, the maki was priced very reasonably so this would be a good budget-friendly sushi place. There are so many options for sushi in the Boston area that I can't see myself ordering from here again. However, the fish here is fresh and everything is fairly priced so this is a great place to get sushi and save a little money!

I was craving sushi so I decided to give this spot a try. It was good and they're open late as well. I'm not sure of the promotion, but I think if you order 3 rolls, you get a choice of edamame or seaweed salad. I chose seaweed salad. I ordered California maki, spider maki, and the hoshi ya maki. Spider and hoshi ya were both pretty good, Cali was pretty basic. Next time, I would request extra soy sauce. Would definitely come back. They also offer delivery, but it might be fast to come pick it up.

This was my 2nd time coming to this location. It's conveniently located near Brighton Oak Square. I did a cash deal, which was $16.95. This deal includes any 3 rolls with miso soup. I ordered 2 combos which came with a free side of edamame! The quality of all the sushi seemed to be fresh. Also, the rolls were packed, good value for what you get. What I got for $40: 2 spicy tuna rolls 1 spicy salmon roll 2 eel rolls 1 crazy maki roll 2 miso soups 1 container of edamame I loved the taste of all the rolls. I think my favorite is either the spicy salmon or crazy roll. The miso soup was yummy and the edamame were delicious!! I would recommend this place. The cash deal is great value.

Ordered pickup via Grubhub and order was ready in 20 minutes! 3 rolls: Unagi Spicy Salmon Maki, Black Forest Maki, Spicy Scallop Maki at $6.50 each, and unagi sushi. Order came with two little cups of soy sauce. The rolls weren't as packed as I'd hoped they'd be but they were fresh and tasty. The eel sushi was really good and sauced well. Not a bad local spot to get sushi.

    Crab or fish?
    MoneyMakerMac Eats ..

Extremely disappointing service, quality and taste. My first time trying a local sushi place and even brought my friends. The cashier was pretty rude and demanding simply when we wanted to pay separately... but that's not the worst of it. The tempura was hard and rubbery and even after calling the woman on the phone argued with me that the fried fish I got was soft shell crab... even though I know the texture and look of soft shell crab and it was absolutely fish. The sushi as well didn't have much flavor. The beef wagyu was decent but doesn't match the price they charge. Extremely disappointing experience and for a small business it's disheartening when you try to give an opportunity to correct the mistake and they'd rather be petty and argue than maintain a loyal customer. Wouldn't recommend and I don't think I'll be back...

This review is for delivery only. Hoshi Ya is great for your late night sushi cravings. Is it the BEST sushi you'll ever have? No. But for delivery up until 1 AM via GrubHub when your options are skimp, this is a lifesaver. I got an Alaskan Roll & Spicy Tuna roll for $11 - 6 pieces per roll. What I really liked was that Hoshi Ya has a very generous fish to rice ratio. Rolls are all killer, no filler.

The most satisfying sushi meal! Maki Combo Entree, Salmon Lover Combo, Sashimi Appetizer, Seaweed Salad!

We have FINALLY found our go to sushi place!!! Everything was so delicious and abundant. We got the makimono combos, salmon lover and sashimi appetizer. Got a free seaweed salad.

How did I not review this place yet??? I first visited 3 months ago but apparently it's been around for about 2-3 years? Where the heck was I?!?! Oh yea Vermont for school. I wish this place was closer to me because for the affordable price, great quality, and late nights for sushi cravings - it is totally worth the binge! It's nice eating sushi instead of greasy pizza which is usually the only option that is opened that late. At least I wouldn't feel half as bad eating at a late hour, because sushi is healthy... Right? The service is amazing and if you order through their website they offer deals like free edamame/miso soup/etc with orders over a certain price. Favorites: Spicy salmon salad Hoshiya maki Sake don Can you tell I love salmon and everything is fresh. The miso soup is a-ok, I've tasted better but must we really judge a place by the soup? It's just soup!

We ordered delivery from here, when I had a Grub Hub coupon to use, and wanted a change of scenery from our typical sushi places. Now- from my previous reviews, you'll see that when I usually make this choice, to try something new, I'm terribly disappointed and wish I had just gone with my old standby. Not with this place. My one issue I had with Hoshi Ya, was that they do not have brown rice, which I found out after I ordered, so keep that in mind. The food however was pretty good, and I found myself to be full but not miserable after eating 2 rolls and an appetizer (with white rice) Our delivery arrived in reasonable time, and everyone was super friendly, and easy to communicate with (as soon as I placed my order on GH, a woman called and explained about the brown rice situation). The sushi was well prepared, and seemed to be pretty high quality ingredients. I don't know. Everything was good, and it was a good bang for our buck, but nothing really wow'ed me. We would probably order again but we still have other favorites (mmm Gari).

This is the best sushi I ever had in Boston area! Very fresh, large portions, very reasonable price! Outstanding! Very recommend scallops with tabiko and mayo, uni is soo good and hamachi is melting in your mouth!!!

Cash deal spicy salmon, cali, and crazy rolls!

The best thing about Hoshi Ya is the cash-deal delivery service where you can order as late as midnight! Comes with 1 bowl of miso soup per order. Sushi is fairly decent, overall becomes slightly pricy after you pay the fee and tip the driver, but hey, the price for receiving good sushi delivered to one's door at midnight is suitably high. There was one time the sushi didn't arrive for like, 2 hours, which was fairly annoying, but otherwise, no complaints.

It's $50 for the regular AYCE or $80 for the Premium AYCE. We opted for the former, and it was plenty great. We have done lots of AYCE sushi and I will say this is the BEST of them - I think it's because it's the same grade sushi as they would normally do Ala carte on other nights. The $50 menu had plenty of sashimi and regular nigiri (sushi with rice) options and some Thai too. We had mostly the sashimi Salmon, Tuna, Yellowtail, Octopus, a few rolls, some edamame, gyoza, shumai. My favorites were the salmon, as the cuts were large, thick and amazing silky, and the gyoza, as it was perfectly crispy. The Pad Thai was bit way too sweet for my taste - a skip for me next time. The decor is very nice - reminded me of a dive Tokyo bar. Service was quick and very attentive. We will be back!

Have been hearing about their Mon & Tue AYCE, so went on to try it a month or so ago. With what…read moreseems to be a recent price increase, now $50++ allows access to a good variety of sushi/sashimi, on top of apps, ramen, poke bowls, and cooked rice/noodle dishes. Whereas $80++ offers diners a set of amount of uni, plus unlimited amount of everything else, wagyu included. Sounds like a good deal, especially when one can eat a lot. Even as we are no longer Team Eat Till You Burst, we went for the premium, mainly for the nicer cuts such as toro and wagyu, and because uni!! Jumping in shortly after 5pm, we were promptly seated, marked a bunch of stuff on paper, and soon after submission, we got food brought to our table. It was a decent meal overall, so why 3 stars? Let's recap. Menu variety is fantastic, though of course we didn't get "one of everything", coz that's simply impossible. While the premium did cover a lot of grounds, it would have been nice if they also included anago (sea eel) which is currently only available on the a la cart menu, and maybe even offer couple lesser-known items such as monk fish liver app, sea grapes, off-the-beaten-path fish cuts, what have you. Would be happy even if we only get an allotment of those like we do with the uni. Now, service - great overall. Servers circulated around and were alert of customers' needs. Approached at appropriate times to take our order sheets, refill water, provide new order sheets, and ask if we wanted more food. So kudos on that. Their denotation of serving "regular portion" of cooked food had us hesitant in ordering, since we didn't want to be wasteful (or use our limited stomach space for dishes we can easily get elsewhere). But from other tables' orders as well as the one noodle dish that we ended up getting, it seems that the portion size was what I would like to see at AYCE places -- about 50-60% of regular Asian dish size, where 3-4 people can each have a couple bites "just to try". However, to think if that is what they call "regular portion", then it is definitely "Brookline pricing" on a la carte, which I would not recommend one to do such things on these items. Food is fantastic in general; we got a variety of stuff, and everything was really of top quality and taste. The meal would have been a "highly recommended" if they didn't serve the uni that we got. Out of the 12 pcs of uni sushi, all of them were... while not "foul" to a point where one cannot safely consume, they were definitely more sub-par than "ok but not great". Colors aside (which I understand there can be a range depending on origins and such), the uni was a "splat" of yellow stuff on rice, without distinct shape of the flesh. On top of the fishy smell (I'm talking about slightly ammonia-ish), the presentation and taste-texture upon them hitting our tongues... really left the ENTIRE room to be desired. In retrospect, we should have sent them back even if they weren't going to replace them. But instead, we stupidly forced ourselves to shove them all down in cowardly silence, then ordered another round of wagyu just to make us feel a little better about it. Yes, we weren't smart as customers. But if the restaurant is going to charge $100++ per person (after tax and tip), someone from the kitchen should have known better than pushing this thing out for customers to deal with. In their defense, yes, the uni itself was still "edible" in a sense that it didn't make us sick, but I'd maintain that better judgment should have been made. Once the shell was cracked open and you see this pale-gray yellow mush, it should have been decided that it is better repurposed, than be served straight to your customers as your star/featured product. As seen in other diners' experiences, it could just have been a one-off mishap, so I'm not knocking them entirely. But I do hope the restaurant would improve on their QC accordingly. It was such a disappointing low point in an otherwise wonderful meal.

The restaurant is small, intimate, and centered entirely around counter seating, creating an experience where guests sit directly across from the chefs as each roll is prepared and handed over one by one. There is a minimalist quality to the space that keeps the focus on the food, while the compact layout gives it an atmosphere that feels more like a traditional sushi bar than a typical Boston restaurant. We ordered takeout for this visit, which is also an option, and the build your own format gives you flexibility to customize your order while still providing a decent amount of meat per roll. The hand rolls are naturally the main attraction, with an emphasis on fresh fish, balanced rice, and crisp nori served immediately after assembly. Hamachi, bluefin toro, spicy yellowtail, snow crab, bay scallop, and eel are among the offerings, each highlighting the quality of the seafood without relying on excessive sauces or toppings. The bluefin toro roll is especially memorable for its rich texture, while the hamachi showcases the clean flavors that define much of the menu. For those looking beyond the traditional selections, specialty rolls and premium additions such as A5 wagyu provide a more indulgent side of the experience. The set menus are particularly appealing, offering a chance to sample a range of rolls while showcasing the variety of fish and textures that make hand roll focused dining so enjoyable. That said, not everything landed equally. We did not enjoy the scallops, which lacked flavor and felt rubbery in texture. The salmon also stood out as unremarkable, essentially just chunks of salmon sashimi without the thoughtful preparation or seasoning that made the other rolls memorable. For a restaurant built around fresh ingredients and precise execution, those two items fell short of the standard set by the toro and hamachi. What makes Lab 13 stand out is how focused it remains on doing one thing exceptionally well. Rather than offering an expansive sushi menu, the restaurant embraces the hand roll format and builds the entire experience around freshness, timing, and simplicity. When it hits the right notes, which it does more often than not, it delivers the kind of meal that reminds you why this format works so well in the first place.
