Can't believe I haven't been here sooner! The bagels tasted pretty fresh and instead of the usual 1 egg in the breakfast bagel, there were 2. Had the sausage & egg on an everything bagel and tasted the Taylor ham, egg & pepper jack cheese on a cinnamon bagel. They like to give you 2 layers of ham too and layer it between ingredients. I've been a pretty loyal customer over the years to the Bloomfield location. It's been my go-to bagel spot since I moved to Jersey, but I figured I'd give this location a try. Overall, I much prefer the Bloomfield location, but the bagels are just as good here so that's why I'm going with 5 stars. The layout is actually a little less chaotic here, but that's probably because there's a lot less customers. At least there was on one particular early Saturday morning. I really love this bagel shop. I really like their coffee too. I don't feel cheated when I get things here and prices seem reasonable. I feel they have good bagels. The best I've had in Montclair. Service is super fast and can't complain about friendliness. I'm holding back a star bc I ordered lox n cream cheese on whole wheat but my husband asked what it was he was eating since he wanted smoked salmon/Nova Scotia n cream cheese...I must have ordered wrong bc instead of slices, we've got chips of salmon bits. I'm attaching pic. I also order fried eggs for my daughter-and these eggs look like a good sized egg like what I make at home. Not sure about the sandwich since I ordered it for my sons lunch so haven't eaten that yet but it looks good. When I think of things I miss from New Jersey, the list is pretty short. At the top of that list is Hot Bagels Abroad. It's by far the best bagel place in Jersey, nothing else comes close. All the bagels are made daily, you can watch them boiling and baking them if you go in early enough. Pick up a bakers dozen for your coworkers with some house made cream cheese and they'll love you forever. They don't skimp on the toppings for bagels sandwiches either, you'll get 2 eggs per sandwich, which you'll need with all that meat. Bacon, egg, and cheese please on everything please! If it's peak breakfast or lunchtime be prepared to wait, it's busy for a reason, because it's freaking delicious. I never considered myself a bagel connoisseur but realized that being from the north eastern united states makes me one by default and unknowingly since trying bagels in the south and on the west coast, quite the BAGEL SNOB! Where i'm from, if you toast a bagel it is sacrilege. I made the mistake once of asking when the music stopped, the tv muted and all eyes were on me... I almost got Bitch Slapped right there while standing in line. Ok so i'm exaggerating a bit but the guy did give me the awkward pause and snarling "REALLY? TOASTED?", Someone sucked their teeth behind me and I could feel the shaking heads... LOL... In defiance i dropped a defiant "Thats WHAT I WANT..." but was schooled and set right soon after by my friends & elders. :) I am a tough nut to crack. :) Another thing, you NEVER EVER buy frozen bagels (Unless there is a zombie apocalypse) in which case lenders is the only acceptable choice. Thats old school. We suspend belief for a moment of course, to allow for working electricity, a freezer and one of those toasters with extra wide openings being available. A bagel is crunchy on the outside, chewy on the inside and provides JUUUUST the right amount of give in the crust before giving up the soft chewy NICE NICE beneath. I lived on w86th street (for 5 minutes, not too far from H&H bagel) in NY and for a time, that was my standard for the best. I dare say that these guys are on par if not better than H&H (I think i hear thunder rumbling in the distance). On occasion my 16yo will con me into driving her to school in the AM (the whole 5 blocks) or when the weather is bad. For my efforts, I reward myself by making my way over to Hot Bagels Abroad to grab a breakfast bagel and orange juice. Its always the same and they know it: Sesame bagel with taylor ham, egg and cheese with salt pepper and ketchup. NOM NOM NOMM... I seriously think that if someone tried to take that sandwich from me in the morning that I would fight to the death to keep it and cry like a baby if they managed to get it. HAHA! This is a great example of a disorganized hot mess. The bagels are good, but in NJ that's easy to find. The store is small. How do you fit so many customers in there during Covid? In any event, I called several times and finally someone answered my call. I went into the store to pick up my bagel and stood off to tell a worker that I was there to pick up my order (which is come place at this shop). In a nasty tone, he said something like you need to wait in the line with the customers who haven't place their orders (there was about 10 other customers in the store who hadn't yet ordered). Then he continued to say this time I will take you. I said no thanks and left without my order. You're not doing me any favors. I'm your customer paying in good old fashion USD; and in turn, I ask for you to perform a service which includes being polite. Customers should not have to deal rudeness which is created by owners' disorganization. read more

Three words: French Toast bagel! When I lived in Montclair this was the closest bagel shop to the High School. Small bagelry nearest Bloomfield Ave (aka downtown Montclair). Located in a small strip of shops including a pizza place, cleaners and general store. There's a parking lot and street parking but spots fill up quickly. I suggest parking up the street away from the crazy drivers. The bagels taste like heaven and are always somewhat warm - especially on a Saturday or Sunday. I crave Hot Bagels Abroad on a daily basis, no joke. It is my favorite place to go in the area for a phenomenal breakfast or lunch. Considering how many bagel joints are around, this place ranks #1 in my book. Service is great, prices are completely reasonable, food is top notch, location is perfect, parking is just fine... really, I have no complaints. it's well organized so there is zero confusion on a busy morning, plus it's spotlessly clean. You are in and out in 10 minutes... one of my biggest pet peeves about bagel shops is waiting in line and dealing with staff that are just clueless and not on point. Even when it's crowded, the staff nails it. Truly, I have never had one f**k up at Hot Bagels Abroad, and I can attest that this is a factual statement across a wide range of my friends and acquaintances. The location really couldn't be any better, it's right off of valley road in a complex with plenty of other stuff to check out....(Tierney's, HELLO, my all-time favorite bar on earth). The guy who runs the place is totally chill and friendly, and the staff remembers you by name. The lunches are really top-notch... boar's head products with whatever side you want and a drink for super cheap. Taylor ham and cheese on an everything bagel is less than five bucks. They do not skimp on the meat at all, for any of their bagels or sandwiches. The specials are definitely a highlight, for example, on weekends, you can get any bagel & cream cheese with your choice of toppings loaded with a heaping portion of lox for cheap - I believe it's 5.99? This bagel place definitely gets my vote for top bagel place in the area. I've been to some of the other places, and I have to agree with others that this is the best. The guys are always friendly and the service is super quick, even when there's a line out the door. The bagels are a nice size with a good chew and outside crunch. They aren't overwhelmingly large or doughy like other places. They offer bagels of all varieties, including a French toast (which I find sacrilegious but obviously people like it if they make it, hehe). They have both an extensive breakfast and lunch menu (I have yet to try anything from the latter). They also offer turkey bacon and egg whites if you're looking for that sort of thing. We get our standard order of: egg & cheese on a toasted whole wheat everything bagel, and bacon, egg & cheese on a toasted whole wheat everything bagel and they make both so cheesy and perfect!
