WOW the best fried chicken place I have ever been to! I'm left speechless meal that I had here. The only other fried chicken place that could compare is Willie Mae's in New Orleans, but the chicken there wasn't spicy. The chicken is fried so perfectly and the warm spicy level gave just the right amount of kick. The banana pudding is also a must try! Dear Hot Chicken Takeover - Please, please, PLEASE open up a franchise in Cleveland, preferably on the east side, or the west side, or both. The first time I tried HCT was from their food truck at a Columbus Crew match, and I was instantly hooked. A hot (level 3) set of wings became my go-to for years to come. I am heartbroken that the food truck is no longer at the Crew stadium, but their north high street location get's the job done too. If you have never been to Hot Chicken Takeover here is what to expect. The menu is very simple. There are 6 items to choose from: 5 whole wings, 4 drums, 2-piece dark thigh and leg, white bone-in breast, boneless breast or a chicken sandwich. These 6 options can come with just the chicken or as meals which include slaw and mac-n-cheese as the two sides, but you can sub double mac to avoid the slaw for an extra $1.50. I will say, I am not a slaw guy but HCT's is one of the best I have had, and honestly two sides of mac is a TON of food, but GREAT for leftovers. The 'hot chicken' part of the name comes from the spice levels available. You can pick between 4 spice levels on the chicken, and I love the HOT which is the "real deal" level 3, but I would not go below level 2 called WARM if you want the real hot chicken experience. The best part about the non-food-truck locations is the free goodies. When you dine-in there is free sweet tea, free ranch, spicy syrup and free water all unlimited self-serve. One of my ultimate Columbus favorites! The food is outstanding especially for the price. I prefer warm chicken, but I have gone before with friends & asked for a sample of the hot chicken (they gave us a hot drumstick) and it was pretty dang good too! I love that the sweet tea is free, and the homemade ranch is the bomb! I have no complaints. The mac&cheese is delicious, the pickles are tasty, and the chicken is yummy. This. Place. Is. Amazing. First of all, free tea?!? Unsweetened and sweet??? That alone pretty much gave this place the 5 stars. But on to the food and such...don't worry that was amazing too. Cute interior design that gives it that Southern feel. The staff were really nice and were patient with us when we were trying to figure out what to order. Ended up going with the drums meal at the spicy level of "hot". Too hesitant to go for the next level of "holy @;&!5$" as first-timers. The portion of food they give you a lot considering the price (also, don't forget that free tea). Hot chicken definitely gives you some burn! It was piping hot and super crunchy, definitely would say one of the best Southern spicy fried chicken we've had. Slaw was a bit vinegary to my personal taste, but it was very refreshing with the spicy chicken. Really liked the cheesiness of the Mac n Cheese. The bread was like simple white Wonder Bread, but you could essentially make a sandwich with them and all the other foods in your plate! Trying to give Chick-Fil-A a run for its money. This was my first time trying Hot Chicken Takeover. First, I want to say the chicken is worth it 10/10. I went for the Hot (one less than Holy). I am a huge fan of hot and spicy anything and most times thing aren't hot enough BUT hot chicken takeover exceed my expectations. The chicken was HOT and so good. Yum. I'm usually not a fan of coleslaw and upon first glance, the coleslaw didn't look too fresh to me but it was surprisingly, really good. Finally, the Mac n cheese is bland, nothing special or to die for. Tasted very generic to me but the coleslaw and delicious chicken made up for it. All in all, I will return! Wanted to try the banana pudding but was too full today. Also, the staff was very helpful with all of my inquires as this was my first time. As the year has gone, we have started to become better and better home cooks. However, there are still some (many) things that are better left to professionals. We wanted to make chicken and waffles at home, but didn't want to go through the hassle of making our own chicken so we ordered up some chicken breasts from Hot Chicken and cooked our own waffles. I've had Hot Chicken before and we usually get the hot option of wings. This is the first time we had breast, and it was crispy on the outside, still juicy in the inside and full of kick!! Each breast came with a sweet tea, bread, and pickles. The spiciness and the sweet tea went so well and it paired well with the homemade waffles and maple syrup! I would highly recommend if you want to take out in quarantine style! The ordering process was easy online, and we got an extra because why not. It was still good 2 days later! read more

Located in North Market, with the endless food options teasing you every step of the way as you attempt to make your way upstairs, I can confidently say that you won't regret passing up all the other restaurants. The hot chicken is on point. Juicy moist goodness on the inside and a perfect crisp crunch on the outside. It's impossible to eat this chicken without getting your fingers dusted with the magic spice, so just jump in headfirst cause ain't no on else sitting on those same lunchroom benches judging you, they too will be far too busy figuring out whether or not they could taking another bite. A few highlights: 1. The free tea is bomb! If it's your first time, protip: fill your cup a little past halfway with ice and do a 1/3 v 2/3 ratio of the unsweet & sweet tea. 2. The house ranch is really good but the hidden gem is the warm house syrup all the way at the end. For the Clintonville location, the parking lot is behind the building and you access it from a side street. Be sure to Google Map the location or else you will be stuck in the turn lane on High St. wondering where to go.... Hot Chicken has a simple structure - order the type of chicken and level of spice, choose your sides, and the tea and sauces are free. Pro tip: they offer waffles and syrup on the weekends! The mild chicken has plenty of flavor and the mac n cheese is incredible. The ranch and pickles add a nice touch. The flavors and quality are fantastic. Do yourself a favor and visit. Hot Chicken Takeover is an excellent introduction to hot chicken for anyone who hasn't had the pleasure of trying the authentic versions in the more Southern parts of the US. They are a social enterprise and hire previously homeless and incarcerated people -- people that are otherwise discriminated against in the job market. And the employees are truly great - despite long lines the cashiers are always excited to meet you and engage in pleasant small talk while your card is getting accepted and the servers are great people. In terms of the food, it's pretty good. I always get the sandwich meal with double mac and cheese (it really does slap) with the HOT spice level. I'll be honest, their spice levels are kind of random: I've had some extremely spicy HOTs and some pretty mild HOTs in the past two years. But the chicken itself is always spectacular, and put together with the coleslaw and pickle it's a pretty damn good meal. Make sure to get their house ranch + sweet tea! The sweet tea is too sweet for me so I dilute with either water or unsweetened tea. TL;DR: Check this place out, you won't regret it. read more

Expectations were high for our first visit to HCT given the incredible buzz about the place as well as the fabulous reviews from fellow Yelpers. Overall, however, we found HCT solidly "OK" though not as amazing as we had hoped and dreamed. First, the staff were awesome. Extremely friendly, down to Earth, and funny. Note: No more free banana pudding for a Yelp check-in. They have variety of merchandise (shirts, sweatshirts) right by the entrance, and one of their sweatshirts with their simple logo on it caught my eye. The price was $45. Hello, sticker shock! The employee explained that the price includes a free meal, though, plus $1 off whenever you wear it to the restaurant. As she said, "it will pay for itself eventually!" Hmm... I guess theoretically true! And, that does make it a slightly better deal. They should think about advertising this, however, as I would never have known had I not asked. The interior is just as advertised. Simple and sort of industrial with long picnic-style tables with rolls of plain brown paper towels for napkins. I read online that they want to foster a sense of community with these tables, but I honestly would prefer choice in seating. Sometimes you want to just have a quiet meal with your dining companion at a small table, and sometimes you want to chat and meet fellow diners. I don't think a sense of community can be forced. They have complimentary sweet and non-sweet tea. Both were quite good. They didn't seem to have any artificial sweeteners (Equal, Splenda, etc.) for those who wanted to sweeten the non-sweet tea without sugar. The only other drink offered is bottled sodas (no Coke/Pepsi fountain). The menu did say they have beer coming soon, though. We opted for a boneless breast meal (warm) and a bone-in white meat meal (hot). We both tried both the mac and cheese and the slaw. The bone-in chicken was better and juicier with a very good amount of heat and crispy skin. The boneless breast was on the dry side, and the coating was quite good and honestly less hot than I expected but perfectly fine. I liked that clearly effort went into the coating, as it had flavor and character rather than just being a salty barbeque sauce like at some places. The mac and cheese was not drenched in a creamy cheese sauce, and I was happy with that (I am not a huge cheese fan). It was a bit salty; overall it had a mild flavor, and I think even non cheese lovers would like it. The slaw is more vinegar-based rather than creamy. Different, but also perfectly fine with a nice crunch. The white bread underneath the chicken was... kind of gross. It seemed like incredibly cheap white bread. No big deal, though, as that's not a big part of the meal. Another member of our group tried the Holy #*@% level of heat and turned red and had tears streaming down his cheeks, so beware! :) Lastly, we had to try the banana pudding. They no longer offer a free pudding for a Yelp check-in, and they only offer a "large" size pudding for $3.50. The "large" size pudding is not very large, though (see photo). The pudding had a wonderful crunchy "crust" on top which had a saltiness that worked well when mixed into the creamy banana pudding. Great banana flavor and a creamy consistency without any pieces of banana inside. Overall cost for two people to eat was about $30. Definitely on the high side, but I appreciate that they want to pay their people well. As we walked out of the restaurant we both remarked that we both still felt sorta hungry... So, we tried HCT. It was very OK. Definitely decent, and the staff are great. read more

Columbus sure loves HCT a solid 5 stars from most people. Myself I wasn't quite as impressed. I stopped in last week while in Columbus and ordered the leg & thigh meal.... warm, and a side of the banana pudding. The chicken was fine, except a little bit stringy but as for the warm seasoning it was almost like it was absent, I guess I should have ordered Hot, but the worker at the counter said the Warm was pretty spicy. I would have made it spicier but I didn't see any hot sauce on the counter or the table.... in fact Popeyes fried chicken is usually spicier. The mac & cheese seemed a little bland, the coleslaw was OK if you prefer it more vinegar and less creamy. Now as for the banna pudding I tried it but threw most of it away, it wasn't really pudding it was runny more like a banana smoothie no chunks of banana or anything to give it a texture. For $11.29 for lunch I expected more out of HCT, not just one piece of bland chicken on white bread. read more

After reviewing my most recent experience in HCT's app and here on yelp I received the exact same response, word for word, from the business owner both in a reply here in yelp and through email. The business owner claimed that if I provided the listed information (see below) I would receive a refund. I provided the information requested but have yet to receive a refund or any type of response from the business. Not only am I incredibly disappointed in the quality of food they now serve, but the business owner is making a point to share blanket statements to multiple customers about issuing refunds and caring about customer experience with no follow up. I was visiting The Child at school and she has raved about this place multiple times. We had to try it while I was in town. I checked the menu before going and noticed multiple sauce/seasoning levels. Cold, Warm, Hot, and Holy s$&!. They also let you choose the part of the bird you want as well. All meals come with Cole slaw, Mac and Cheese, and a couple slices of bread. You do not get cheated eating here. I ordered the boneless meal with Hot seasoning and the extra meat, white (bone in) with Holy s$&!. I should have ordered the Warm on both! They are not messing around and this is from someone who loves spicy food. The Hot was borderline not being able to enjoy it, but taking bites of Mac and Cheese helped cool me down. The Holy s$&! was another story entirely. Regardless if you like spicy food or were born on the Sun, it's uncomfortable hot. It's lips numb hot. The Mac and Cheese made no difference in handling the heat. The only thing that made a dent was their sweet tea (awesome and not too sweet). It somehow helped me power through the last few bites. I'm not a Cole slaw person so I didn't eat it. The Mac and Cheese was good, but it was a little on the safe side. Not that mine is better, but using thyme, onion, and garlic seem to make it better as far as flavoring goes. Again good and would definitely eat it every time I go, but just needs some depth to put it over the top. I give it five stars because the staff was friendly and patient while I screwed up my order. The food was great and the sweet tea is a great addition to the meal. Will definitely come every time I visit Columbus. PS: I'm just ordering Warm boneless and eating between the bread as a sandwich. The food was INSANELY good...not like any other restaurant I have ever been to before. The staff was incredibly nice. The only downfall was that it was difficult to find ourselves a seat between the lunch crowd and the shared long tables...a lot of people were just standing around waiting for a seat. Dry-rub Chicken is PERFECT, but the sides need a little help. Hot Chicken Takeover (HCT) is a staple in the city. Their owner is passionate, the chicken tastes good, and the employees are a reinforcement of how great the diversity and community of people we have in Columbus. My go-to for HCT is the Medium dry rub chicken. It's crisp, spicier than most, and drool-worthy. The sides are a little lack lustered for me, but it's perfect for a box to go meal. You have between a combo of Mac and Cheese and cole slaw or double of the same. I'll say I'm a huge fan of coleslaw; I'm not biased towards either a mayonnaise or vinegar base, but HCT's slaw varies on day-to-day basis and sometimes even location. Sometimes it's dry and other times it's just right. Their Mac & Cheese is alright; but that's only because I prefer a creamier, more indulgent Mac & Cheese, so it's really just my preference. Other than that, I love their atmosphere and high energy. I've never had a bad experience, and their refreshments are FREE! Oh, and one time when I was standing in line I was talking to my friend about how much I love pickles and an employee came out with an entire container just for me. Talk about going the extra mile. Went to the Clintonville location with a group of coworkers for lunch without much expectation except that it's pretty well known in Columbus. I got the chicken breast with the third hottest sauce and the double mac in place of the coleslaw. The chicken was so delicious and crispy and I enjoyed that it was served simply on white bread with a couple pickles. The sauce brought just enough heat, though I became weary when my coworker warned me that the sauce hotness was inconsistent between visits, so what I ordered today may be too spicy in the future. However, I was disappointed by the mac and cheese (not to mention the double serving was just too much for me). I prefer a rue-based sauce for my mac and cheese, but this one looked like just noodles with shredded cheese melted on top. Not bad-tasting by any means, just not my favorite. My only qualm was the price. It was very delicious food, and you can't beat quick service during the lunch hour, but it was a little too expensive for me to get all the time. However, I'm sure I'll be back; though probably never to the North Market location because I've heard it's always very busy. read more

I've been here three times in the past week, so close to home can be seen as good or bad. A few of the picnic tables have stools which allows for wheelchair seating. The food at this location is just as good as the original takeout and North Market. I've never enjoyed iced tea before but I'm a fan of both the unsweetened and sweetened tea. I've not had a chance to try the waffles (only available on the weekends as a replacement for the white bread) so that's still on my list. The only problem with this place was that the chairs were super uncomfortable (probably to keep people from staying too long) and the tables were dirty and sticky everywhere. Having been gifted a cold, day-old meal previously, I was eager to see if the fresh meals were even better. I was somewhat disappointed by the piping hot meal, though. I ordered a "Holy" level of spicy boneless breast meal with slaw and mac and cheese. It was ok, but not great. The heat level was definitely spicy, however, it somehow felt massively under seasoned and was in desperate need of salt and acidity as well as being slightly overcooked and dry. The breading, however, was amazingly crispy. The slaw was also acceptable, but again, despite being a vinegar-based slaw it was just too sweet to provide that bit of acidity the dish desperately needed. Even the pickles were more sweet than tangy. The mac and cheese was taken almost too literally- it was overcooked elbow noodles congealed by melted cheese. The entire glob was lifted each time I tried to take a single bite. I ended up needing to cut it with my knife. The banana pudding was more like a banana milkshake. The pudding never set and was just pouring off my fork. Overall, the meal was just slightly flat tasting. That being said, it was still decent. I would like to try them again, maybe vary it up a little to see if perhaps bone-in meat or a milder spice might have the winning combo. read more

It's all genuine, flawless white meat chicken breast (no weird crunchy pieces or rubber gloss coating). You can tell these guys put care into their meat. I prefer the hot but have also gotten the warm. If you're unsure about which temperature you want, the descriptions online and in store are pretty accurate based on my tastebuds. I absolutely love the ranch dressing and tend to get four containers! I dunk my sandwich in loads of ranch and then also drizzle some on my double mac! When I get the meal, it tends to last me two days! Sandwich for dinner and then mac & cheese for lunch/dinner the next! Money well spent! The ranch and sweet tea are free which I love. For the tea, I highly recommend mixing Ma's sweet tea and Joe's unsweet tea for the perfect amount of sweetness! Lastly, you can grab a banana pudding to go (free with Yelp check in!) I'm not the biggest fan of banana flavored things, but I know other folks love it (I'd love to see a chocolate flavor one day!) This particular HCT is in Clintonville. It's only about a ten minute drive for me. I only live a block from the North Market location, but since that restaurant has limited hours, I sometimes go to this location. I would say this one is much smaller than the North Market one. Not that that's bad because I've never seen it where there's not a table to sit. One thing I like is that all the HCT restaurants are set up with cafeteria tables. Some people might not like that but I find it unique and energizing. It's all about community and when you're all eating together you never know who could be sitting next to you unless you spark up a conversation. I don't come to Columbus often and was only here for the weekend but I'm so glad my friends chose this place to have brunch. I tried the chicken sandwich and the reason it's called "hot" chicken takeover is because you can choose your heat level. I tried the hot which is 3 out 4 on the heat scale. I don't usually get spicy as restaurants claim it's hot when it's usually not but holy cow! I took two bites and my mouth was on fire. Of course, I like to suffer a little bit when I ask for spicy so it was perfect. But beware if you're not a spicy fan. Even the cold is really flavorful but has a little kick. The sides are awesome. The coleslaw is some of the best served coleslaw I've had with fried chicken along with the baked beans. I really wish I had more of the beans because I was in love. The macaroni was just okay honestly. This is a DEFINITE go to if you're in Columbus! read more

What can I say that hasn't already been mentioned? This is a MUST TRY spot if you're visiting Columbus. You can order your chicken one of three ways--Cold, Warm or Hot. I love me some spice and Warm is all I can handle. I can't imagine what the Hot experience is like! The chicken is crispy, juicy and delicious and don't even get me started on the sides--the mac & cheese is heavenly and I could probably eat a gallon of their cole slaw. All meals come with unlimited scratch-made ranch dressing and free tea--sweet or unsweetened. A majority of their staff has been incarcerated and has had difficulty reentering the workforce. The owner offers fair chance hiring opportunities for these people when so many other organizations pass them up due to their previous record.
