The story with hot dog lady begins with me taking a jaunt to LA to visit a buddy and do some exploring at the tail end of a work trip. On this night in particular we hoofed it to a few different bars and just had fun in general palling around the city. Near the end of the night by buddy was struck by a wave of excitement, as he had decided our final stop would be to visit THE HOT DOG LADY! He explained that these delights were the usual fare wrapped in bacon and then covered with some delicious mystery sauce. It was bar close, i was hungry, SOLD. We made our way to her last known location and paid the fine lady for her labors. They were cooked on a metal plate perched atop a shopping cart with a chemical flame underneath. TECHNOLOGY! The dogs were good though, so there's that. UNRELATED: As soon as we finished eat the dog an SUV pulled away from a night club about 200 ft away and some guy ran out into the middle of the street and unloaded a revolver at the damn thing! BLAM BLAM BLAM! Did that just happen!??!?!? Yes it did, lets get in this cab NOW. Thanks LA for being insane.

    The ultimate happiness delivery system.

There's no shortage of enticing eateries and fine dining establishments in LA but every time I'm in the City of Angels... for SOME STRANGE REASON... I really, really want a bacon-wrapped hot dog piled high with caramelized onions, avocado, pico de gallo, and smothered in ketchup, mustard, and mayo. I'm completely in love with these $3-4 happiness delivery systems. If I ever become stupid-rich, I'm going to commission a personal flying aircraft carrier. In my bedroom, I'm installing a bedside sushi bar (manned by Jiro Ono) and one of these hot dog stands.

Their menu consisted a huge selection of beer, sausages and dipping sauces for fries. We opted for the Duchesse sour, Dr. Browns Black Cherry pop, Duck sausage, Buffalo sausage, and small fries with curry ketchup. The ambience was great! It felt like a beer hall since it had long tables and benches in the middle, everyone was drinking beer having a great time. There were also smaller cozier tables on the side if you wanted a more intimate space. We enjoyed our drinks and people watched while we waited for our food. The Duchesse red ale sour was really yummy, it was a good balance of sweet and tartness. We got the duck, bacon, and jalapeño sausage with sweet peppers and caramelized onions, the hot dog was delicious!! The sausage was a bit rich but the savory flavours were incredible, it was grilled well with a nice crispy skin and paired really well with the sweet peppers. You also get a huge selection of different mustards to try - yellow, dijon, seeded, honey, brown, you name it, they've got it. The buffalo, cherry and mint sausage was very good as well, but it's a bit more dry and gamey than the duck. The grilled bun is just ok, it's a solid blank canvas to highlight the tasty sausages. The fries are fat boys and seasoned very well. I normally am not a fan of thick fries but these changed my mind, the curry ketchup gave it a nice complexity as well. I just wish they gave you more sauce since the fries are so chunky. :) Had a really fun time overall and can't wait to come back and try their other sausages and beer options.

After we did some shopping, we needed some lunch and what better place than Pinks. Coming from San Diego, I have had Pink's Hot Dogs at the Del Mar Fair, but never at the actual restaurant. This was such a fun surprise, we found parking right away which was great because you never know with LA. The humidity was horrible and it was so hot, but the line was actually pretty fast. I was having a hard time choosing what to get but I ultimately chose the Shaq hot dog, which has a 9 inch hot dog, chili, nacho cheese and crispy onion rings, my husband ordered their "Jaws" burger which has polish hot dog, chili cheese burger and bacon. He also got a chili tamale and we shared the chili cheese fries with shredded cheese instead of nacho cheese. I think our total with drinks came out to $50? Which I thought was pretty fair for the amount of food we got. The restaurant is so cool with photos of actors on the wall with either the owner or a hotdog and they even had the cutest hotdog purse. We got our food to go, so we could eat in our car, it was too hot to be sitting outside. I shared my hot dog pieces with our dog, he loved it. We loved our food too, the chili is so good and it wasn't at all messy. That polish hotdog was spicy and when they saw Jaws they really want you to open wide because it's huge. Definitely coming back, the line is so worth it.

Today's visit to Pink's was just like the last we pulled up to an extremely long line that was down the block and we were all in. The wait time was 45 minutes. Pink's is old school legendary restaurant that I have eaten at for several decades the memories come back the second I hit this block. The staff work extremely fast getting those orders out, the pics, crowds and vibe are exactly the same fast and wild. And you better know what you want the head cashier is no joke she can get quite testy if you take too long placing your order. My daughter is vegan and while they do have vegan hotdogs she refuses to eat anything at Pink's because she doesn't want to risk grill/cross contamination with any meat and dairy products. She orders her fiancé a cheeseburger with everything minus the mayo or any sauce. 10/10 Polish Dog With mustard and onions. 8/10 Chili Cheese Fries 10/10 My order Pink's Famous Chili Dog with onions and mustard. 10/10 It was soo good I love the snap on these delicious hot dogs. Carl Reiner Dog 9 inch stretch hotdog with sour kraut and mustard. 10/10 Deliciousness on so many levels and my all time favorite hotdog. Onion Rings Lightly battered crunchy and tender onions soo delicious I'd buy them again and again. 10/10 Reheated in my microwave 1 minute and they were still crunchy. I need a cool drink and a Orange Crush hit the spot. 10/10 If you haven't tried Pinks definitely put this on your must try list. My next visit will be before the year ends. Until next time. Just me. The hot dogs were coated with a light layer of sugar, giving them a crunchy exterior while staying soft and moist inside. The melted mozzarella cheese made them even better. The smoothie drinks tasted fresh, and I was told they use fresh fruits in their beverages. Customer service was excellent--the staff was friendly and helpful throughout our visit. The only downside was the parking situation. Valet parking is required, and you have to pay, which can be a bit inconvenient. Other than that, we had a great experience and would definitely come back.

I got the mixed cheese/hot dog which was fresh and satisfying to eat. I do wish that the cheese and hot dog could be eaten at the same time rather than the top half being cheese and bottom half being hot dog but I believe thats how all korean hot dogs are made. I got it with sugar on top because I love a sweet and salty combo but it had a bit too much sugar, even for me. I'd ask to go light sugar. Also had a strawberry yogurt smoothie which was delicious, definitely the highlight. However, I was charged for a large smoothie which I didn't ask for which was a bit frustrating.

A lot of the hot dog vendors have their PayPal/Venmo QR codes taped onto their cart. You can't tell the difference between the TJ dogs sold here and the ones in Tijuana. I've personally never gotten sick after eating these. Service is quick, there may be a bit of a language barrier, but not enough to prevent your purchase of a hot tasty TJ dog.

They're particularly amazing if the vendor is set up on a corner, it should be at least midnight, and you should be a couple of sheets to the wind. Calories don't count after midnight.) Whether it's outside the clubs in Hollywood, or you're celebrating the Lakers win outside the Staples Center, those trusty carts are a godsend to LA food lovers like me! Now to find those bad boys, if you're good, you can locate a stand by scouring the city for the queue on corner - the clear indicator of the food stand. But if you're freaking awesome (like my fatty friend, Ellen Sue C.), you can simply stick your head out the car window and sniff the nighttime air to find them. Either way, bacon-wrapped hot dogs are staple in the culture of LA. It's what makes us so damn awesome! NOTE: It has been tough finding these jewels lately, and I discovered on my last lucky adventure that they are required to have permits now, and that many have acquired trucks instead of carts!
