I really wanted to like this place, as I'm from the south, and can't resist a good plate of biscuits and gravy, but the biscuits and gravy I was served here were disappointingly bland. Nothing makes me sadder. I also wished the hash browns were crispier all the way through. Once I got past the top crispy part, which was delightful, the rest of the potatoes were soft and boring. It needed something to give it more pep. My sunny-side up eggs were cooked perfectly, however, with runny yolks that mingled so well with my hash browns. I don't want to completely write this place off, since so much of their food sounds and looks delicious. My fellow diners ordered omelettes, which were rolled French-style and polished off with enthusiasm. Seems like this is a popular place, so they must be doing something right (they certainly do their eggs right) but unfortunately, I can't recommend their biscuits and gravy. This is one of my favourite brunch spots in town. Having a Southern family and early roots there, Southern and soul foods have an irresistible pull on me. My favorite dish there is the Fried Green Tomatoes Eggs Benedict (yes, you read that correctly). It's hard to get in in terms of the wait time for parties of more than 2 people. We got here and we're told there was a 15 minute wait and we were next in line for a table. One gentleman came in and ask for a seat and they instantly gave him a two top table (mind you we had been waiting a while) then a couple came in and they had instantly set them. Just felt that we looked younger so we were being treated poorly. They skipped over us three times. And we had to speak up to be sat. Very crapy because I was a waitress for a while myself and have always tipped over 25%. Highly recommend not judging your customer on how they look or present themselves. Checked out this place on a recommendation from our hotel and so glad we did! We enjoyed our breakfast their outside space which felt safe and cozy. The hostess and server were super friendly. My family and I had a wonderful experience at Hot Suppa today. Even though it was Memorial Day and as busy as one might expect, the staff was incredibly attentive and responsive. We have an 8 month old and the host (I wish I had asked for his name) gave us a high chair and showed us to a space to leave our stroller and promised to keep an eye on it. We were seated at a booth and a lovely waitress gave us time to make up our minds. Then, when another, larger table opened up, the host offered that one to us for more space with our little one. On top of the incredible service, everything we ordered was DELICIOUS. I had the Hollis with grits and scrambled eggs as well as a glass of Maine maple sweet tea and my husband and I agreed that the sourdough toast was absolutely divine. I've read a number of Yelp reviews about Hot Suppa because I wanted to see what others said about the long wait time there, which is a constant issue. Many remarked the venue is popular hence the excessive delay in getting seated, which I experienced and found off-putting, Since they do not take reservations I was stuck waiting for nearly an hour with my guests when I was there last. That is way too long. Therefore keep this in mind as you will wait if you go to Hot Suppa for breakfast on the weekend; I cannot speak for weekdays. Generally speaking the food at Hot Suppa is good. Is it extraordinary as some would say? No, I do not think so; yet "good" in any restaurant carries weight from my perspective. Hot Suppa is pricey. Once upon a time Portland had a vastly different demographic that would not support the prices many venues charge today. Pursuantly, Hot Suppa is supported by people who have the means to pay their prices for their meals. Just keep this factor in mind if Hot Suppa is on your radar screen. I would absolutely recommend this place! They have a lot of creative menu options and the food was delicious. I would highly recommend getting the side of kale they offer. It's so simply dressed but it wad my favorite part of the meal (which is saying a lot!) I think it would be REALLY cool if they made their own ketchup & hot sauce. The food is so good that Heinz just doesn't cut it. There's a great small chain of restaurants in Colorado called Lucille's that makes their own creole ketchup and it is to die for. I also had the best Paloma ever here-- highly recommend it! We ordered a bit of everything- the grits are perfectly cooked and thick. Food is delicious but they could benefit off or expanding a bit since there's always a wait. We came twice in the same weekend we were visiting Portland. Saturday we arrived at about 11 and we were given a wait estimate of about 1 hour to an hour and 15 mins. Two spots opened up at the bar before the estimated time so we sat there. Wow...I truly wish this restaurant was closer to Connecticut. The food was extraordinary and inventive, the staff was helpful and friendly and the vibe was inviting and fun. We went for dinner and were surprised by the substantial unique offerings on the menu. The quality of the ingredients shine through and the skill of the chef is apparent. Our server was attentive, helpful and easily answered all our questions. The restaurant has limited seating and can get a little loud but it is a must try. Plan ahead since parking is on street and is limited. Came here because I heard that this has the best corned beef hash in Portland! Went in on a Sunday around 1030 and waited about 25-30 minutes for a table for 2. I always grade places by their corned beef hash, and this place did not let me down! The exterior was crisp and on the inside were actual pieces of corned beef instead of the usual mash of meat. I am pretty impressed with the food. The sourdough wasn't too tangy but it was perfect to wipe down the plate after I ate my over easy eggs. The coffee is great, definitely a strong blend and not your typical watered down coffee. My advice would be to come early, put your name down, and wait patiently. If you aren't there when they call your name, they will go to the next party on the list. And when you come back you'll be first in line again to receive a table, unless there's other people in the same situation as you. read more

Walked to Hot Suppa this morning. It's in a really charming neighborhood in Portland. It is very small so if you are 2+ party be prepared to wait 40+ mins before getting seated. I was alone, so was seated immediately at the bar. I ordered the pulled pork sandwich and hash browns. The sandwich was lacking a bit in flavor and could have used more bbq sauce. Hot damn, Hot Suppa! Why do you have to be so good and yet so far away? I didn't expect to fall head over heels for a Southern cuisine spot in Portland of all places, but now I have to hit it up every time I'm in town. Their menu is filled with comfort food favorites, many with a little twist on the traditional but not in a pretentious way. I read so much about the fried chicken and waffle that I just had to try them, even though I'm weirdly terrible at eating meat on the bone. I probably looked like a toddler with my subpar eating skills, but it was so worth it. The crunchy coating deliciously envelops the moist and tender chicken. The perfectly crisp and golden buttermilk waffle with Maine maple syrup may be the best waffle I've ever had. Together, they are heavenly. Now, if you come during brunch when they don't have the fried chicken and waffle combo, do yourself a favor and get the fried chicken sandwich and a single waffle. I actually love it more because it's boneless (of course) and topped with sriracha mayo and a crazy good jalapeño slaw. Once I have my fill of fried chicken and waffles I may move onto other mains, but for now I can also attest to the yumminess of their sides, particularly the mac and cheese and hash browns. I have to get off the food now to pay homage to their awesome drink menu. Each one sounds more appealing and refreshing than the next, but the star is the one with some real kick to it, and that would be the After Glow. I always find that spicy drinks could be more spicy, but not this one. They know how to do spicy at Hot Suppa. It's a bummer you can't get dinner cocktails at brunch, so I'd recommend the Red Rooster from the brunch cocktails. They also have a good beer menu if that's more your style. Hot Suppa is definitely small and there is usually a wait, but don't let that deter you. The food alone is worth it, and they also have a vibrant interior with local art on display and great service. Last time we arrived at the height of brunch and were quoted an hour wait. We decided to just hang around outside and you wouldn't believe the number of names the hostess called and the people were nowhere to be found. That hour wait got slashed to about a half hour. What I intended to be a short review has seemed to morph into a novel about my love of the fried chicken and waffle. I just can't condense my feelings apparently. Southern cuisine restaurants are popping up all over the Greater Boston area, but Hot Suppa in the north still slays them all. I will pray in earnest for an outpost in Boston. Decided to come based on the yelp reviews. I have to say I was excited by most if not all of the menu but for some reason I ordered simple this time around and I truly wasn't 100% thrilled. The food wasn't bad at all it just wasn't in my opinion 5 star. Hash browns had zero flavor or anything memorable. Bacon was smoked and good. Bloody Mary was nice it did have a bit of a Nola kick to it but the grits didn't and I think that what shocked me. Maybe I will try again if I'm ever in the area. Don't let this stop you from coming. Delicious!!!! This was our first dinner in Portland. And it did not disappoint. The waitress was friendly and efficient. The place is cute, but pretty small. We ordered deviled eggs and spicy wings to start. The wings were very spicy, and delicious, especially the blue cheese dressing. The deviled eggs were out of this world! For our meal we ordered the lobster mac and cheese and the pimento burger. The Mac and cheese was the only thing that wasn't outstanding. It was a touch gritty and needed a good amount of salt and pepper (and hot sauce for my husband) to make it as flavorful as it looked. The pimento cheese was wonderful, and the burger overall was fantastic, although we didn't get a choice of cook. Overall I would love to come back here and would recommend it for sure! read more
