Food: amazing! I got the smoked salmon Benedict, and I swear it was the best Benedict I've had. The eggs were poached, PERFECTLY. The hollandaise sauce was so good. I switched out my hash browns for their grits with cheddar. I ended up taking the cheddar off because it was too salty for my taste, but overall, it was BOMB. This place was great for breakfast. Arrived Saturday just before 9am and had to wait about 10 minutes for a table. The bloody Mary's were good and a bit spicy. Last night Alan found Hot Suppa on Yelp. When I was starting to write this review I saw to the right the 6/20/2012 review by my friend Alexandra S, which is detailed and interesting. I read it when she wrote it but forgot over the years. I refer you to it for more background information than I'm going to give. We drove over and had more trouble than previously finding parking, so we parked in the adjacent Rite-Aid lot, which I'm not recommending you do. We walked into the store, got something we needed to assuage our guilty consciences for breaking the rules, then walked over to the restaurant. We walked into a mostly empty restaurant. A couple of other parties were seated. We were greeted and encouraged to seat ourselves wherever we wanted. The majority of seating is booths w/ wooden benches so that's where we sat. Our server was Elizabeth and she was friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. Alan ordered a Left Hand Milk Stout to drink and I ordered a dirty martini, first gin, then vodka when I learned their well gin was Beefeater, which I hate. In retrospect it probably would have been fine dirty, since I couldn't taste the gin over the olive juice, but it was as good w/ vodka. He loved the stout. We looked over the menus and decided to share a fried green tomato salad to start. Alan ordered the fried chicken and waffle and I ordered fried chicken w/ collard greens. I asked Elizabeth if I could specify dark meat only and she said she'd ask the kitchen. Usually it comes w/ a mix of dark and light, generally a breast and a couple of legs. I said I'd prefer a thigh, as that's my favorite part. The salad came unsplit w/ two share plates. There were four delicious slices of fried green tomato atop a mixture of red leaf, oak leaf and other lettuces. Alan was pleased there was no spring mix or arugula, which he disdains as "frou-frou". I was happy because it was salad. There were also cherry tomato halves and I forget what else. The dressing was delicious, the fried green tomato was terrific and the salad was a great success. Our mains came out. Alan had a breast and a thigh. I had two legs and a thigh. I traded him one of my legs for his thigh and we were happy. The chicken was amazing, crispy and moist in the right places. It had been "brined" in sweet tea, which I had never had before and which imparted a subtle, hard to define flavor to the chicken meat. In generally I hate brined poultry because of the saltiness the brining imparts, but this was different and wonderful. There should be a name for the process other than brining, since the name itself implied salt. And there is. It's called marinating. Marinating! Get w/ it, culinary establishment! Don't call it brining if there's no significant salt involved. The greens were tasty and the bite I had of the waffle was good too. It was a very nice dinner, Southern inflected, but not heavy or greasy and salty the way the food can be in New Orleans and elsewhere in the South. If we lived here we'd be back. read more

I got the mother clucker with an irish coffee iced! My first time having one iced and I must say it was fantastic. Perfect balance of coffee and baileys and Jameson. Chelsea handled the line like a champ and Dominic was on top of everything we needed only when we needed it. So, I stumbled upon Hot Suppa while running an errand in Portland. Early morning so it was time for breakfast. I ordered a 3 egg scramble with ham and cheese. Possibly the most perfectly cooked scrambled eggs that I've ever had; just right, which is always a pleasant surprise these days. The meal came with local fresh bread toasted and string hash browns. I finally made it here after hearing all of my friends talk about it. Be prepared to wait for a long time if you're coming here for brunch on a Sunday, typically you will see everyone waiting outside because this place is actually really small inside. The only reason I am not giving Hot Suppa 5 stars is the slow service. The food is Ah-mazing. Great ambiance, a really interesting array of drinks available at the full bar, and a really diverse menu. Everything looked so delicious I could hardly choose. But it was late lunch time, not really busy, and the service was not good. Long wait for food. Chatting waitstaff at the bar with backs to the tables. Empty drinks just sat. After the food was delivered it's a good thing we didn't need anything because she never came back until it was time for the check. A shame as it is a fun place to eat. Quaint little place. The wait time they gave us was pretty long, but it was also a Saturday at 10:30am and we didn't end up waiting very long at all. The food was very good. I got the biscuits and gravy. My only complaint is how heavy they were on the gravy. It was good, I just would have preferred slightly less gravy, or just to have it in the side so I could dip my biscuit in it. My fiancé loved his meal here, and we both agreed that the food seemed super fresh. The waitress was pretty nice but she seemed sort of stressed out. The "Hot Suppa Double Double" burger consistently makes the "Best Burger Roundup" lists in Portland, and the consideration is deserved: this burger is a fast food-style burger done right, with two thinnish burger patties, pleasingly shellacked with dual layers of melted American cheese, caramelized onions, and a few slices of pickle. Dipped directly into ketchup, the Double Double is burger heaven. Hot Suppa's list of side dishes are impressive as well, including Fried Green Tomatoes, Macaroni and Cheese, and Baked Beans. Hot Suppa is proud enough of their sides, in fact, that a lunchtime option is to build an entire meal out of sides, for a flat price. It's a perfect option for those days were you can't seem to satisfy the hungover monster in your stomach. Open for breakfast and lunch, but until recently, not "Suppa," a fact that my 11-year-old nephew finds hilarious and fascinating, you may hit a bit of a wait on the weekends. The tables turn quickly, though, and seeing the smiling, satisfied faces on their way out inspire you to wait just a little longer. Got a bonus at work today and wanted to take my cook -husband out for dinner. Was the second place I thought of within walking distance and budget. I looked up the menu online and saw fried chicken and waffles, which is on our bucket list! I love that the serve until 9:15. It shows they care and is handy for our later night schedule. We were both so excited about the menu it was hard to decide. Something told me to go with the cubano sandwich with collard greens side. My husband got the sampler menu with the slaw , corn bread and sweet potatoes. The sweet potatoes were undercooked, the slaw was bland, and the cornbread wasn't great, but the collard greens were spot on, and we were there at the very last minute, but the service was great and we probably could have stayed later and had just as amazing service. We both got beers, he getting the Rogue hazelnut brown and me an IPA. The hazelnut stout was one of the best beers I've tasted in the last few years... dark, with some hops with a chocolaty/hazelnut/coffee, caramel finish. The pork, brisket and Cubano were the best I have ever had!!! We are both bbq, and this style of cooking connoisseurs. And we found it to be some of the best ever!! Can't wait to go back for the chicken and waffles, brunch, breakfast and the bloody marries. Ended up getting the strawberry/rhubarb crisp and chocolate bourbon bread pudding home for dessert . When I got inside I saw why---SMALL space- BUT, there is a bar so get a drink and hang out in the "lobby" area while you wait for your table. Makes it less painful... Fried green tomatoes....alone...they are bland...perfectly crisp, but bland nonetheless. Saving grace is the deliciously seasoned remoulade. My fried had the corn beef hash with hashbrowns....in short....corn beef was under-seasoned which was quite disappointing. PROS- Hash browns are delicious and crispy. I had the bbq pulled pork benedict which is served over a fluffy biscuit instead of English muffin. accompanied by two perfectly poached eggs and a rich, creamy hollandaise sauce and hash browns. In an effort to figure out all the rage over chicken and waffles, Hot Suppa came through when seemingly no one else offered them...and I was not disappointed. Well, maybe a little. It's a surprisingly pleasant combination, especially since they served it with real maple syrup. The fried chicken was fried just the right amount and had plenty of meat on each piece. It was so hot I could hardly hold onto it, while the waffle had the perfect crisp to melt-in-your mouth ratio. The service was on point--no issues there. My friend really enjoyed his pulled pork mac and cheese as well. What really intrigued me about this restaurant before I tried it was the fact that they serve a Vesper Martini, James Bond's renowned drink of choice in Casino Royale (3 measures gin, 1 of vodka, half a measure Lillet Blanc--served straight up with a lemon twist). The only reason I didn't give this place 5 stars was for the following reasons: 1. The hours. It closes relatively early every night when this kind of food would be perfect late at night. 2. The name. I feel illiterate whenever making an effort to correctly state the name, "Hot Suppa!" It's hard for people to respect a positive review with a name like that. 3. It could be a little less expensive. I would eat there twice a week if it was just a tad cheaper. 4. The bartender used Beefeater gin in my martini when it's clearly a featured drink, I was expecting something a little better than well/house...like Bombay or Tanqueray. I didn't catch what he used for vodka. 5. Parking. I parked in a Rite Aid parking lot (with tow warnings) due to a confusing sign addressed to Hot Suppa! patrons that was either stating that parking was exclusively for them or instructing them to not park in that lot.
