Really expensive for what you get. For what I paid, I should have had a 5 star room but instead got something very average. We had to wait until late afternoon to get in to the room when we checked in. We were told it was empty but they still needed 3 hours to get it ready for some reason. I guess they only have one maid? When I asked, a late checkout was denied so we didn't really get our monies' worth. Our room was also very noisy, despite being one of their best rooms. It was right over the main coastal drive which meant we could hear every motorized golf cart that went by. I would not go back to this hotel. read more

My rating is solely off customer service because I have yet to stay here, but I am so impressed with how accommodating Asia was and how easy she made the process of booking a room that I wanted to write a review. The Metropole Hotel has a very convenient location, beautifully appointed rooms, the roof top jacuzzi, and some excellent harbour views especially their VIP suites of which I've stayed in several. This is one of my favorite places to enjoy a "staycation" in my own hometown and I highly recommend it to anyone visiting Avalon. Not only is it a great property, but the owners are truly wonderful people that want the best for their community and are very generous. They have supported my work with the CI Women's Forum Youth Mentoring program without fail and so many other charitable organizations in our beautiful town. Love Catalina! We decided to try out Hotel Metropole for the 1st time on our many visits to Catalina and we weren't disappointed. Hotel Metropole was very clean and the staff was very friendly, they made our stay very pleasant. The free continental breakfast was perfect for us, we aren't big eaters so coffee, oatmeal, and fruit was perfect my daughter enjoyed the muffins and bagels. The 1 thing that bothered me was in the mornings the business (Vons truck) next to the hotel was noisy but that's not the hotels fault but it really annoyed me. My husband and I went here years ago. It was supposed to be a romantic get away and our first time to Catalina. We had a great time until they tried to charge us a ridiculous amount of money for 2 bath robes?? Basically we were accused of stealing them. We had no clue of what they were talking about. First off, I would never wear one nor would I put something on that someone else wore. It was so embarrassing I had to open up our suitcase to show that there wasn't any robes inside. They still insisted that they were in the room when we checked in. She didn't believe us, didn't want to hear it and wanted us to pay for the missing robes. We felt like criminals and couldn't believe that this was happening. That was the first and last time we went to Catalina. Whenever someone mentions that island I only think of that horrible experience. We thought it was going to be a place we could go to every year but after that stay... never again. It has forever changed the way I stay in hotels. As soon as we get to a hotel I ask if there's robes in the room... and they look at me weird and either say no or ask if we would like them. Just be aware and if there's no robes in the room report it ASAP! read more

Amazing hotel! On the ground floor there is everything you need! - coffee shops, arcade, boutiques, food, and laundromat. Very convenient! We had a partial ocean view room with a balcony which had a GREAT view in my opinion.....you can see the marina and casino, but far enough from the boardwalk so you won't be bothered by all the noise. The room was clean and included a jacuzzi......SCORE! Free wifi too! The staff was friendly and professional. I have absolutely nothing bad to say about this hotel.....instead, I have a minor request: I'm not a big fan of perfume-y hair conditioners. The soap and shampoo was mild smelling (perfect), but, the conditioner was too pungent. Please change. And, if you're gonna put in a DVD player in the rooms, at least offer a catalog of movies to rent.....good idea to make some extra money ;) Will definitely be staying here again, and will be requesting the exact same room. :) read more

After traveling through LA, then catching a ferry.... we weren't super relaxed when we got to the Hotel. Getting to our room and of course it was not the style of room we reserved. We call front desk to let them know. Answer: "give us 15 minutes to get things situated". 30-minutes goes by and we get a new room. New room, bathroom sink is not draning and the toliet is running slow. Call again... Same answer, we finally get upgraded to room 321 over looking the water, GREAT VIEW!!!! The next 2-nights we end up staying in room 320, again magical view, new and clean large room. VIEW 5-stars (from our room's) MATTRESS 1-star FRONT DESK STAFF 1-star I would recommend the rooms we stayed in. Rooms overlooking the courtyard not at all. There is a smell of dank deep fried food coming up from the restaurants in the courtyard below. The Front desk gals are a joke, polishing their nails and if not doing that they are texting. My opinion is that they are under staffed & under trained. We enjoyed our vacation on Catalina. It felt very similar to towns we visited in Sicily. Would we stay at Metropole, yes, only in the same room. Note, we went March 2013, it was off season, we had the island to ourselves... read more

Good Value, wonderful location, and nice updated rooms. I purchased a deal on Travel Zoo for this Catalina weekend get away. Well worth the price and the continental breakfast was tasty. The only draw back with our room was the morning noise from the quad area below. Great location with updated and clean rooms that overlook a cute courtyard. Complimentary breakfast is a nice touch. The outdoor hallways can be a little noisy - so ask for a room away from the elevators / ice machine if that sort of things bothers you. Absolutely love this place. Stayed here during my honeymoon in 2010 in the suites. Beautiful room! Heated tiles. Water view. Easy access downstairs to make a quick run to Vons or all the restaurants. Returned for my birthday this past year and reserved a less expensive room but it was still VERY nice. Complimentary continental breakfast. The toilet is rusty, the wifi is terrible, the tv doesn't work well (someone has been up to work on it), my shower has been lukewarm water (someone working on that as well). I am so frustrated and upset. And - when I booked the hotel- they said they were going to have champagne on ice waiting. They were completing some construction and though the noise wasn't too bad, Ava was incredibly accommodating and upgraded us to a quieter and breathtaking room. This place was really impressive. First time in Avalon and we were beachfront with access to all that Avalon has to offer. More importantly, we were traveling with our newborn and they were super accommodating. Even after we checked out and had to wait for the last boat after a long day of adventures, they let us hang out in our room till 6PM, shielding our little ones from the evening chill. Very disappointed after spending 3 nights during the Fourth of July festivities. Extremely noisy, with young and college-aged kids running up and down the halls and stomping on the floor on the room above at 10:30 p.m. Called the front-desk, and they were less than willing to assist. The next night the courtyard below, which adds a nice visual-touch to the grounds, was also very noisy. My biggest compliant, however, was that they've chosen not to have coffee-makers in the rooms (?) I have never been in a hotel and paid this much, and not have a coffee maker... We go to Catalina frequently, and always have a wonderful time, but we'll never stay here again. read more

The hotel is overpriced, but what do you expect in a tourist trap like Catalina? Everything is overpriced there. We were in room 402. Good size room. Clean. Balcony big enough for two to sit and have coffee with a nice view of the ocean. Good location, just far enough from the main strip to avoid the crowds, but just a block away. Everything was in good working order (didn't try the gas fireplace). Staff was friendly and helpful. The spa attached to the hotel was great too. It was small and a little loud, but the treatments were top notch and the price was surprisingly reasonable. (90 minute massage for $100). Not sure I'd go back to Catalina (if you're not into scuba diving or boating, you'll be bored in a day or two), but stay here again if I did. read more

This was our second trip here but the first with our 5 year old. The location is perfect, its at the end of the busy main area and right across the street from a wonderful little beach. The lobby is open and airy with a very comfy feel. The staff is very friendly and helpful. My sons new best friend is Gus who was wonderful. We arrived early so Gus put our bags in a storage area for us, retrieved them for us several times all with a smile on his face. The rooms are very clean and well decorated. Ours had an ocean view and a fireplace (room 306 for those interested). The continental breakfast was perfect, with a choice of fresh bagels, hot coffee, cereal and fruit it was just what our family needed to get the day started. The front desk gave of several great suggestions for activities and food. We stayed for 3 days/2 nights and we cant to return to the Hotel Metropole. read more

We stayed at the Metropole in June of 2019 and enjoyed a lot of things about the hotel - primarily location and modern decor. We upgraded our room due to a desire for a King bed and got a great 2nd floor view of the harbor, which we loved despite the price increase. Unfortunately, we had an issue with the restroom and amenities in our premium room. Usually for a price above $500/night things like water, slippers, robes etc are included, along with an updated bathroom and even a bottle of wine or fruit/chocolate plate. In addition to that, the room above ours was extremely noisy and the hotel did nothing about the loud thumping and running noises throughout the night despite several requests. We were dissatisfied with the condition of the bathroom in our room and contacted the hotel to alert them of the situation many times following our stay, which met with no response from management. For a room of this cost and claimed caliber, black mold is completely unacceptable and brings to question the overall hygiene of the property. A simple cleaning with an adequate product would have removed these [confusingly] neglected areas in the bathroom. I haven't seen this kind of issue at any hotel rated above 2 stars. There is a new hotel currently being constructed in town where we'll stay going forward. read more

This is my favorite hotel so far on the island. It was reasonably priced, modern, good size rooms, beautiful deck, free breakfast, close proximity to shops and beach, and they will clean your room two times a day! So many of the hotels on Catalina are super small and not updated. The only downside is the super small Jacuzzi. However the view makes up for it. I wish they had free coffee in the lobby but if you buy a cup in the morning in the café nearby, they will give you free refills all day. I can't wait to stay again! read more

After researching Hotel Metropole online through their website and talking directly with staff I would stay at any other hotel other than Hotel Metropole. Major red flags from the first interaction. The biggest complaint of mine is that they advertise "packaged" deals but nothing is really a "package". I was looking into the wedding packages and it really looked awesome, exactly what my fiance and I were looking for. They advertise: OUR BEACH HOUSE WEDDING PACKAGE INCLUDES: Luxurious two-night stay at the Beach House Ceremony and officiant Bride's bouquet Groom's boutonniere Fresh greenery on the arbor Round trip boat fare for two Champagne Gift Basket Wedding certificate keepsake With the price breakdown of: November 1 - April 30: Mid-week $ 650.00 (plus bed tax) Weekend $ 850.00 (plus bed tax) May 1 - October 30: Mid-week $ 850.00 (plus bed tax) Weekend $ 950.00 (plus bed tax) This is not accurate at all. The price on the reservation page is also different. When I called to inquire the prices were all adjusted a month ago and had to explain how it was $1050 + tax. When I saw the advertised package and rates I thought it was like any other "packaged" deal. Two nights and all the fixing were included in a "packaged rate". This is not the case. You have to pay for each night and each service listed is also an additional cost. Very shady business practices. The best news that I found out today was.....Hotel Metropole is not the only hotel on Catalina Island :-) read more

We had a good experience staying there. The room was roomy, clean and nice. The hardwood floor got my attention when I book this place. We stayed in room 203, it was perfect. We can hear the man playing the small guitar and sining. It was quite soothing. Good walking distance to all shops and to Descanso beach. We will definitely book there again. After a very long day of traveling we finally made it exhausted. We had a front room close to the street. About 6:30 in the morning the garbage trucks arrived along with a few very loud workers. I asked them to please try tone a little quieter but ignored me. Called the front desk. Don't think they did anything to remedy the situation. I guess Vons is close by because they pulled some big truck in to load/unload things. Again no consideration given to the guests. What a waste of money. It's now almost eight and they are still clanging, men yelling. No consideration for the fact we paid BIG money to get some rest. The drapes don't quite close enough to darken the room so it looks like a long day with no sleep attending a wedding. Thank you Metrpole! Won't be back here. Disappointed read more

We had our wedding at the Beach House of the Metropole Hotel. It ended up being beautiful and I was very pleased. However, I was extremely frustrated with how the hotel handled their communications beforehand. I was unable to reach any of the wedding coordinators (Maria, Esmerelda), until a couple of months prior to the wedding. It was as if they completely disregarded any of my phone messages or emails, until right before the wedding. Which was very frustrating & stressful, because I had a lot of questions. Which, in my opinion, I feel is normal to have questions ahead of time when planning a destination wedding. There was also a lot of unprofessionalism with their staff. The front desk basically harrased one of my bridesmaids, calling her several times for her cc to pay for the room, when she had already had given it to them several times. Additionally, they messed up her reservation, putting her and her husband on the same room block my father had made for our immediate family. They told my maid of honor she would pay deposit at point of reservation, and the remaining balance 2 weeks before check in date. Then called her 4 months before our scheduled date wanting payment. She thought it was odd but had no problem paying, then they overcharged her by $50. Upon calling back after checking her original email with pricing, she was told by front desk that they would need to contact manager before crediting her back. Which, isn't a big deal, just annoying that she was overcharged in 1st place. Also, be warned....one of the officiant's the hotel referred me to, MARK ALFT, NO SHOWED on us!!! Luckily our caterer came back to check on everything and called her friend who literally ran across the island to marry us. The entire wedding ran an hour late due to this, but it ended up being fine and the woman who married us was AMAZING!!! Her name is Anni Marshall....highly recommend her, she saved our ceremony!! It was just very stressful, so I would not recommend using this man to marry you! All in all, the wedding was great, and once there everyone at this hotel treated us well. There were just big some hiccups along the way, and for what i thought was to be such a nice hotel, there was a huge lack in professionalism and courtesy beforehand. Definitely a little disappointing. UPDATE! I HAD to update the aftermath I experienced after my review! I made a review on WEDDINGWIRE.com in addition to yelp saying the same comment, and Hotel Metropole disputed my comment! They told wedding wire I never stayed at their hotel just to get my review REMOVED from the site!! My comment wasn't even that bad, just honest! I had to email wedding wire a copy of my reciept (annoying) to proove we stayed there (and spent a LOT of $$$$) in order to reinstate my comment! This hotel is sooo incredibly unprofessional and SHADY!!! Please Be warned!!!!! My girlfriend and I wanted a weekend getaway. We booked this hotel through my company app- Concur. Unbeknownst to us, the app booked us in Khasaztan (near Russia) for the night. Once we arrived to this hotel the front desk worked diligently to find us a room as they had just sold out of their last room. They provided us with mimosas, invited us to their wine and cheese reception, gave us use of the hot tub, and carried our luggage to the hotel we eventually stayed at. All in all for a hotel we didn't end up staying at, the Hotel Metropole gave us top notch service. I will defo be back. I also reccomend massages in the courtyard of the hotel. The staff is very cheerful and accommodating the big plus is they can store your luggage when you check out so you can enjoy more time before leaving the island. Only thing we didn't get a view so avoid room #214. Unfortunately, disappointed! My husband and I were just here this past weekend on our honeymoon and it wasn't what we expected. When I booked the room I let them know this was for our honeymoon and nothing special was waiting for us in our room. In fact the next day after a long beach day our room hadn't been cleaned by house keeping. I had to call the front desk. Even after I made them uncomfortable to get a later check out time,I had to come back and get a two rooms from the Catalina express boats being cancelled due to weather. They worked with us no problem. They were fantastic! This place is exceptionally nice and beautiful. Avalon is expensive but it's vacation money so if doesn't matter. If you're coming here book this place. Great amenities, location, and service. If you're going to Avalon go to the Metropole. By the way, Veronica and Brenda are wonderful. We stayed at this hotel from Sat-Monday. Based off the price, reviews, and website, we were expecting a wonderful stay. However, we were both generally disappointed. The room was nice, it was dated in the hardware and bathroom fixtures (but I'm told the whole island is). I could look past the older hotel, but I was very disappointed in the customer service we received. Check in - we got to the hotel a little early, approx 1 hour before the guaranteed check in, and our room was not ready. Not a big deal (it wasn't guaranteed), but the front desk staff was like, "ya you're not ready." We had to ask and initiate the conversation about our bags and such. The jacuzzi - the jacuzzi was out of order, and when we inquired, we were told - "ya, sorry." I wasn't expecting them to do anything, but I was disappointed as the "rooftop jacuzzi" was a selling point for us. The hotel room - the room was cute, comfy bed, wood floors, older bathroom fixtures. What upset us, was the bedding. Our bedding had a blood stain, and other stains on the sheets. We requested that the bedding be changed, and when we returned, we found the bed to be made, but the stains remained - so obviously they didn't change the bedding. The room was also advertised as having either a balcony or a fire place, just be prepared, some balconies don't even have standing room. Also advertised as having robes in rooms, we had to ask the front desk and again got, "um ya ok. ill have to call and see" The Wi Fi - the hotel advertises they have wi fi (and now a days, its a must). Well the Wi Fi was down the first 2 days of our visit. When we inquired with the front desk, we got, "ya, sometimes it just doesn't work. sorry. its cause there are so many people here." This was upsetting, and again the customer service was beyond disappointing. Check out - when we checked in we asked for the 12 pm checkout (normal check out is 11am). The man said, don't worry, just call the morning of and we will do it. Well, we called the morning and the front desk said, "ya sorry, you need to be out by 11am." Again, I am understanding if we have to be out of the room, but the way that was conveyed to the customer was not acceptable. No Shuttle to the Boat Dock - When it came time to catch the ferry, we asked the front desk if they had a shuttle to the boat dock (as we saw the Hotel golf cart in the front), and they said, i can just call you a taxi. Given the price, and that other hotels (Like Hotel Catalina - who is cheaper) have the shuttles, it was disappointing. Lastly the price - this hotel was expensive. And for the price, I was expecting a working jacuzzi, a working vending machine, working wi - fi, and other basic guest services. The lack of respectable customer service was the downfall. I can look past a lot, but when the front desk staff is not friendly it made the stay not worth it. Unfortunately, we will not stay here again and I would not recommend it to anyone. read more

My significant other and I went to Catalina for our first trip and for our first time on the island. We wanted to go all out so we booked a VIP room with an Ocean view. Our view of what would be the water, was obscured by the ice cream shop, and I believe there must be a building code restriction that prevents a full balcony, so you couldn't really sit outside on the balcony and enjoy what little view existed. The check in process was subpar, the lady was quite rude. The lobby was a mess of people, luggage etc. We had all arrived on the Catalina Express and quite honestly, you would have thought it was the first time they had that many people arriving (which I am sure it wasn't). When my significant other and I got to the desk, I asked if the room was ready. The rude lady gave me her rehearsed speech about what time check in would be. I work in the industry so I am quite aware that rooms can be ready earlier and additionally, we prioritize our VIP guests when there is a clear difference in reservations. Either way, I wasn't upset, she gave me a paper to fill out, I did so, gave her my phone number and she said she would call when the room was ready. We left our bags and went out in the blazing heat to walk around and kill time. Over an hour passed, no call, so we went back to check on the status. Different lady (significantly nicer) said "Oh, it's been ready for a while" which infuriated me. She then asked me to fill out the SAME piece of paper because she couldn't find the one I filled out with rude lady. I told her that I was not comfortable doing so but my significant other then filled it out. Rude lady reappears, tells us that she will have a bell man assist us to the room. My significant other says we do not want a bell man to assist, she then repeats that she will have a bell man take us to the room. Significant other says we can take our bags ourselves if you just tell us where it is, she says the bell man can show us, at which time I tell her we do NOT want a bell man. She then says well the VIP suites are in another wing (insert horrid attitude here) "Which is why I SAID you need a bellman"...Ok, lady. We get to the room, no champagne as promised, view was horrid, and I was pretty upset. Paid way too much for subpar customer service and then for a room that really wasn't worth half the price. I called to ask if there was another room. Rude lady answered, she said yes. We then came down, and she took us to the furthest, darkest corner and showed us a room. Ironically, it was significantly quieter and I was fine with it, however, the thought of being forced to have a bellman assist us move our 2 beach bags, and having to see rude lady again for the transfer and partial refund was too daunting for us. We did encounter some better staff while there but I definitely won't be returning. Maid service at the hotel was great, and one of the VIP amenities is that you get service twice a day, the second time can be just towel service, but it is good to have the option. The hotel has a continental breakfast, the VIP wing has a separate one but it is the standard continental fare. The VIP continental selection was pretty bad so it is better to walk over to the other wing. I have a very hard time staying in hotels that don't meet my standards so I don't mind paying whatever it takes to get a place where I can be comfortable.
