This is a very cute boutique hotel located in the night life district. There are a lot of restaurants located within a walking distance of this hotel. The check in process was smooth, as long as you pre checkin before arrival; they will send you a text. We were in room 11 with a full bed. First time staying in Long Beach but this hotel has been pure bliss honestly, and the customer service is a-1 and I typically don't write reviews but this one really deserves it!! The beds are the comfiest I ever stayed in and the location is also great it is walking distance to the beach and only a 7 min drive to the Catalina express terminal which is so great especially with traffic. So many shops downtown you can walk at night to. Me and my partner stayed here just for the night and I forgot my favorite skirt and so we called after we had checked out and the customer service was amazing we were able to get everything we forgotten! I definitely felt at home with the calming atmosphere from the setting of the room and they even offer bike rental in the lobby which is great! And also many great brunch and dinner options that are walking distance. The Roku tv was also very nice! The front desk worker was amazing as well! read more

Firstly, I'd like to say that I don't like leaving negative reviews. My purpose is to advise older guests or unsuspecting guests about particular challenges they may face. My husband and I stayed here a few weeks ago. Looking at others' photos and reviews, I'm sure it's a lovely place, but I think we had the smallest room in the hotel (#16). It was difficult even walking past each other between the wall and the bed. The bathroom was teeny and the sink was outside by the bed, with only hot water. There was no closet at all. What we found even more disheartening was that we weren't warned about the parking situation and had to find parking on the busy street. Further, as an elderly couple, it was challenging carrying our bags up two flights of stairs. Granted, we were aware that we'd be climbing stairs, but didn't know we'd be on the third floor. The stairs were also quite narrow. It may not be their responsibility but it would have been a kind gesture for the front desk staff to offer help, being we are older. He didn't seem the least bit concerned. I'm glad other people have had positive experiences here. We can say that the room was clean and quiet, which we appreciated. Perhaps the front desk or whomever books the rooms can give potential patrons a bit more warning about this or similar rooms. I wouldn't be opposed to returning now that I have more information (and I would certainly request a larger request room). read more

A neat little hotel located conveniently downtown near the waterfront. As it is currently Covid the host is checking in and out via social distancing guidelines. I never met the host however I received ample instructions how to get into the front door as well as finding my keys and parking garage clicker in my room. There is no elevator so if you have a ton of luggage I suggest leaving it in your car or try a different place. The hotel room is actually quite small, I booked this place for me and my friend and we had to share a queen sized bed. Barely room for luggage. Of note the room is extremely clean and they provide you 2 free water bottles inside the refrigerator. The room also comes with a microwave. They don't have a coffee maker but they give you cups and two instant Starbucks coffee for your enjoyment. The TV is connected to Roku, with access to Netflix Hulu etc. even though the rooms seems close together I barely heard my neighbors. Showers are nice and hot. read more

I had read the reviews and knew that there was no elevator; but the employees at the front desk helped carry my luggage upstairs (major plus because I'm a heavy packer). I booked the cozy full; it is indeed cozy and clean. There are various options for rooms, some may be more spacious. But, everything that you need is in this space; refrigerator, microwave, towels, toiletries, a/c, private bathroom and if you request it, an iron and tabletop ironing board. There is a convenience store across the street, a supermarket 2 blocks away, Roscoe's chicken and waffles is a short walk away, the pike outlet shopping is about a 20 minute walk away. It's also about a 15 minute ride by car to the port of Long Beach. Be advised, there is no breakfast service, coffee is available in the community kitchen in the lobby. There are also bicycles available. If you're driving, there is parking for a fee. I would check out the local parking garages and compare prices. I would stay here again for a quick overnight trip. read more

I'm giving this hotel five stars because of the niche it fills-- small boutique. It's not the Ritz Carlton. If you want a "real" five star hotel, please check yourself into the Ritz Carlton. Yes, there are only stairs; the building is very old. Yes, the room (I stayed in 16) is quite tiny, but it was also relatively very cheap for the location. My bed was full-size, and that's plenty big enough for me and my friend for one night, but ymmv. Pros: -- Cute, clean, and comfortable, with fluffy, fluffy pillows. -- Roku tv lets you use your own Apple TV account or other streaming service to watch stuff instead of having to use your laptop, but I didn't take advantage of this since I was here only overnight. -- I was here for a Saturday night, and I didn't think street noise was a problem, nor were there bright lights from neighboring buildings flooding my room. -- I liked my view! -- Microwave and fridge worked fine. -- Staff was very helpful and friendly, both the check-in guy on Saturday, and the young woman who checked me out on Sunday. Checkout via text is also available, but she was at the desk when I went downstairs with my things, so I just did that. Cons: -- I wanted to watch the Dodgers game but couldn't get the local NBC Sports channel to load on Roku. We lost 15-0 to the Giants, so I didn't actually miss anything worth watching anyway. -- I couldn't figure out how to get the drain plug on the pedestal sink to pop back up so that it would drain quickly after washing my face. Fwiw, I didn't use the shower since I was in a hurry Sunday morning, so no comment on that. However, the closet-sized bathroom with shower and toilet did appear very clean. -- The detergent they use for linens has a slightly lingering powdery-perfume odor that I'm not a fan of. I suppose I did become anosmic to it after a while; but every time I returned to the room and laid down, I'd noticed it at first. I'm very sensitive to smells though, and will also mention that for a few minutes on Saturday night, I noticed a cigarette smell coming through my open third floor window, but it dispersed quickly. I didn't use the a/c as the weather was lovely. -- If you have lots of clothes you want to unpack, there's no closet or dresser (see "quite tiny" and "closet-sized bathroom"). There's one small nightstand with a drawer, and two hooks with wood hangers on the wall. This inexpensive room is best for light travelers, like myself. In short, I loved my stay here and will definitely return to Hotel Royal every time I come to Long Beach. If your goal is staying in the East Village so you can easily walk to where all the fun is (and I had SO much fun!), this is a great place! read more

I am so glad I found this place. I frequently come to Long Beach but this was my first stay at Hotel Royal. I was greeted by a warm kind face. Her name was Rosy and she made sure I was settled into my room. It's set up more like an AirBnb. The room was super cute and most importantly very clean. There was a hair dryer, iron, microwave, and fridge. Throughout my stay Rosy was attentive and ensured that I was happy and comfortable with my room. I've experienced no other hotel in Long Beach like it. I am going back again tomorrow for a short stay and booked my husband there for a stay next month. Would I choose this hotel again? Probably not for what my family needs. But in general, it wasn't bad. Great location in Long Beach with lots of restaurants within walking distance. The issues I had with this place are uncomfortable sofa bed, dirty dishes, thinnest walls EVER and the room smelled of very strong chemicals. The sheets were super smelly with that chemical smell. The hotel receptionist was nice to check in on us and took my feedback about the smell saying they are trying out a new detergent. So hopefully they switch to something not so strong. So the sofa bed! OMG! Do not imagine that you can use that to sleep on. It's awful. Lastly, the walls haha! Could here a full conversation from a neighbor. Booked this hotel on hotels.com as a convenient location to get to San Pedro port the following morning for a cruise. The location is great, there is 24 hours check in, thankfully!!! No worries for me as I became super delayed and would have been out of luck otherwise. Cute room, shared bath but room comes with a sink and mirror so you are pretty set. I slept fantastically for the short stay I had due to my delayed plane. The location is easy to find, convenient to downtown Long Beach and very central to have a fantastic time. I like this place and use it as my first choice when booking for a quick Cali trip. I prefer the loft because you it includes a parking space. The biggest downside to staying here is the terrible parking situation. They don't secure enough parking to accommodate their occupants because they share a garage with another business, and it's first come first served. Circling around for a park at night stepping over homeless people sleeping up and down the sidewalks is no walk in the park. It's very uncomfortable in supremely inconvenient. The shower heads are crusty, and the toiletries are questionable, but overall the rooms are clean. read more

We stayed in their "west wing" which made me feel special since it's one of my favorite TV shows. ;) Nice room - pretty large, a good fridge, coffeemaker, great TV/Roku system, very secure. The bed was amazingly comfortable - a brand new memory foam mattress! There was plenty of room though no closet. No biggie. We only stayed for 2 nights, anyway. OMG THE SHOWER. I wanted to live in that shower stall. It's got the most awesome extra large rain showerhead I've ever seen. I literally want one for my own shower at home now! We liked how the hotel was within walking distance to many nice restaurants and there was a Village Market right on the corner for assorted sundries and snacks. I'd like to offer some suggestions to the operators though - to make this an even better experience: our room was on the ground floor, right on the street. Perhaps invest in some double-paned windows to block out the street noise. Also, the blinds let too much light in even at night since the room is situated directly across a streetlight. Perhaps some blackout curtains would be nice. And while Alexa took care of setting alarms, giving us the skinny on the weather and stuff, she absolutely messed up the cooling system and refused to lower the temperature no matter how nicely I asked. About to check out and we cannot be happier. This hotel is cozy and has everything you need. Bed is super clean (I checked for bed bugs) and comfortable. Room has a mini fridge, microwave and tiny coffee machine with coffee pods. What we liked the most is that they have a community kitchen by the lobby. We were able to enjoy coffee and cereal as well as prep some lunch for the convention we were here for. I won a free stay at the Hotel Royal from a contest they had on Instagram. Let me start off by saying how stoked I was because I never win anything! So thank you Hotel Royal for the free night stay. The free night stay was very accommodating; they called me to book the room and gave me the room of my choice. The night before my stay I received a text from their virtual concierge to help me with check in. Upon arrival the gentlemen who worked at the front desk was helpful and kind to my boys who immediately drew all over the white board in the lobby. We were put in their newer rooms that was the perfect size for a small family of 3. The room came with Netflix and some other movie streaming networks that I didn't pay attention to because I like Netflix. The restroom was beautiful... that shower head was EVERYTHING! Our room also had a cute little breakfast table, mini fridge (stocked with bottle water), microwave and mini-Kurig. Breakfast is served in the main lobby from 7am-10am. It's a simple continental breakfast, coffee and OJ. Check out is at 11am, I'm not sure if they have late check out because I didn't inquire. Something's to be aware of: 1. When coming to check in you may not find street parking. Long Beach is filled with narrow one ways. 2. Parking for the hotel is off site, a block away to be exact. 3. The hotel rooms are on top of business and facing the street. Now I don't mind any of the above mentioned but for those who need on site parking or don't want to hear street traffic; these may be areas of concern for you. read more

Found this super cute hotel on Hotels.com. Me and beau were going on a cruise to Mexico but wanted to stay at Long Beach for the night so we were there early to board. This hotel is Super close to the beach and to the porting dock. Upon arriving it was kind of hard to see if you didn't know what you were looking for. But before check in they kindly sent an e-mail explaining where they were and where to park they were very specific in the e-mail which I appreciated. Their lobby door is always locked, you must be buzzed in. If you staying in the hotel they will give you the code to get back into the hotel if you do decide to be out all night and when the lobby closes about 9pm. The lady in the front was such a sweetheart. She took us to our rooms. Now, the only thing I really didn't like about this hotel was there weren't any elevators so you can to carry your luggage up the stairs. I mean there wasn't like 10 stories but still. I was on a floor that had shared bathrooms but that was ok because they were exceptionally clean & I never waited once! The room is pretty small, European style. It had a TV, Little sink, a little fridge, AC, coffee maker (complementary coffee and tea), cups/mugs/utensils. It had everything in that little room. They give you an actual key to a room not a room card. It's pretty cool kind of old school. They also have bikes that you can borrow for free! Of course you have to sign a waiver just in case you mess it up or lose it but c'mon don't lose it! We went it and had a blast riding bikes around town. We went down to the pier and had dinner. We also met the owner of the hotel she's such a doll! Her and her husband handle everything. And they do a great job! Love it here. read more

I liked this place! The communication was a bit over the top, but in a good way...I'm just not used to receiving text messages from hotels! It was actually nice to have such open dialogue, and reduced person to person contact, which was probably the point during this pandemic (if the hotel doesn't usually text guests, this would be a good thing to adopt). The room was tiny, but in a quaint way. It was spotlessly clean, and I liked that it had a ceiling fan to circulate air, plus the window ac unit. I didn't use the tv. The bathroom is closet sized...probably literally built in an old closet, lol. If you're a really tall person, you'll love the height of the shower head! The hot water took awhile to get there, but then it was toasty and lovely. The shower itself is small, so if you're on the larger side, lol! Good luck. The sink is out of the bathroom, on the other side of the bed (I was room 16). For just me, I was very comfortable and enjoyed my stay. If you're traveling with someone, you should be very comfortable with them; I don't think I'd stay there with my husband (of 20yrs, lol, but we like a little privacy!), just because the toilet is so close to the bed (a pocket door separates them). I had a fridge and a microwave, and real dishes. There were complementary bottles of water, instant coffee packets, and tea as well. Due to covid, there is currently no breakfast, no bike rentals, and the kitchen is closed. They say they've reduced their rates accordingly, and now offer free parking because of the reduced amenities. I stayed here this past weekend. It so cute. They let you rent bikes for free. It was clean and so many restaurants and stores just footsteps from the door. I left my glasses there on accident they mailed them back to me within days. Everyone there was so friendly from the front desk to the cleaning people. I felt safe and comfortable. This hotel is like no other I've ever stayed at. I say that because, it was boutique-ish but, also a cross between a bed&breakfast and a singles apartment. So different & not at all what I imagine but, I loved my stay here!!!! Room was very clean, hard wood floors inside #6 (my future requested room), comfortable bed and fresh bedding. While the rooms are small it was just enough room for 1-2people; they offered breakfast snacks from 6-9am and best part was they offered bikes to guest and you could check out a bicycle to ride for no fee. This was right up my alley seeing that I have a beach-cruiser at home so, Im a beach gal and its been a while since I road a bike on the beach. You know this Cali girl had to ride the bike to breakfast (up the street to Breakfast Bar & 2 blocks over to the beach). Sweet! Their was only 1 very small not major thing...the tile in the shower was clean but, is pink (therefore threw the cute trendy decor off) so, the tile in the shower could use an update. Outside of that, the owner Coralie and all the staff were uberly friendly and treated me like I was family. Funny because, the night before check out I received a text...and I had been drinking and wondering who was texting me talking about "Thank you for staying with us" but, later after dinner when I read the whole text...I discovered it was a text from Hotel Royal informing me of their easy check out process. Lol There's even a board on the wall which they encourage you to sign upon check out. You know I left a lovely comment. I loveeeeeeeeeeee this place to pieces so, forget staying with family I will be continuing to stay here every time I go home to visit family/friends. (See videos/pics...) If I could leave less stars I would. This review has to do with their "customer service." I say that with quotation marks due to their lack there of. They took my payment for a one night stay that I had booked a month in advance through Booking.com I could not reach ANYONE via phone call. Only through text. And as it were, their response was that in the fine print, they are allowed to take payment whenever they wish. Ok fine. So I canceled while payment was pending. And did my payment go through anyway? Stayed in this quaint hotel for one night for my birthday and the front desk gave us complimentary champagne. Very sweet gesture and we are highly positive that we will be back to stay here during our next visit. The have bikes to borrow and a shared kitchen. There are currently 23 rooms but they will soon be adding another 7 rooms. Despite the small rooms they make up for the variety of coffee and tea offered in the room, and the fridge and microwave. read more

This was our first stay at Hotel Royal. We booked a room with a private bath because this hotel is a hostel style and most rooms share a common bathroom. The room was small but more than adequate. It had everything you'd need for a short getaway. It was clean and stocked with included items, free coffee, bottle water, microwave, dishes/flatware and a fridge. The bathroom had nice fluffy towels and decent size shower. The staff was very polite and helpful. They literally walk you to your room and make sure you have everything you need. Free bike are included if you wanna tour the town and the parking is off site but super close and secure. Great little hotel. We had a king deluxe which was a small one bedroom. The had spices in the kitchen , bottled water and coffee. They keep you informed via text which I found great. The area has lots of choices for food although Covid had shutdown the outdoor dining during our stay. You can park on the street or the have a pay lot around the corner you can use. The lot has in and out privileges and a reasonable rate for a 24 hour period. The walls are thin so you may be able to hear other guests but not an issue for us. If you need an inexpensive great place to stay, try Hotel Royal. read more

Great place for a magical stay in Long Beach! My boyfriend and I decided to make our day trip to Long Beach a spontaneous overnight. We booked the studio last minute and it worked out wonderfully. We had so much fun in the studio room with the murphy bed. It was clean, well-stocked with dishes and toiletries and linens, not to mention it was adorably decorated! I felt like I was in Paris. Cute hotel. Similar to a hostel. Great location. Would skip if you have mobility problems. Lots of stairs. We stayed here over Memorial Day weekend and it was great. The hotel is a little hard to see from the road and we had a hard time finding somewhere to unload, but the location is really prime. It's walking distance from lots of shops and restaurants. It's in the downtown part of Long Beach, so it's quiet and less busy on the weekends. The hotel offers a few types of rooms and we accidently booked one that had a shared bathroom. I was a little worried about the situation, but it wasn't bad. The bathrooms were always clean and always available. We stayed on the 3rd floor. There are 2 bathrooms on the floor, each have a door to the hall that closes and locks. It's very similar to a college dorm. Inside the bathroom there's a toilet, a small sink and a shower. The shower has a dispenser for shampoo, conditioner and body wash. Our room was right next to the bathroom so we were worried about noise, but we didn't hear a thing during our stay. Inside the room, it's pretty cozy. We had a full bed, lounge chair, AC and "kitchenette" area. The room also came with a full sized sink which made getting ready in the mornings and at night easier. One thing that killed me was the bed frame, they should really put a bumper on the edge of it. We kept running into it while trying to navigate the room. We opted for the parking structure, but we ended up just street parking most of the time. There are plenty of spaces available around the hotel and we weren't more than 1 block each time. read more

We needed a place to stay for cheap (since we were driving down from the Bay Area and would be sleeping for maybe 4-5 hours) before we docked the Ferry to Catalina Island early the next morning. This place was just down the street from the terminal and was under $100 for a night. The interior is a little outdated, but that's what give it that vintage feel. The only negative thing is that parking SUCKS, but you're one block away from what seemed like their "downtown" and nightlife which seems convenient if you have time to explore. Otherwise, everything else was clean and cozy, felt like a room in someone's house. read more

Royal Hotel was a very excellent Long Beach, California adventure. Behind the desk, Joe and Rick were very helpful. The surrounding community supports fun adventures. 7:00 AM is when the lobby opens up and so does the kitchen for breakfast. Continental breakfast and cook your own waffles are there waiting. 7:13 AM is exactly when the fresh-brewed coffee is ready. The bicycles are lined up along the wall ready to be taken on your Long Beach adventure. I suggest a talk with Joe (or Rick) before setting out because he is up on everything going on and save you a lot of heartache as to where to go, routes and etc... I wanted a hair cut, and as it turned out, "Dappers and Dames" was just a few doors down and "Erin" did a far better job than I would have gotten at my place. "Retro Row" (4th St. and Cherry down to Junipero) was a lot of fun which simply requires exploring as things change every hour of every day. At the end of it, for $7.99 I got a big (1/4 lb.) tasty, a big bag of fries, and unlimited refills at the soda machine when I ordered their Cheeseburger Combo at "Golden Burger" (at the corner of 4th and Junipero Ave). Bike rides along the beach bike path are a lot of fun, but was simply too cold to do while I stayed there (March 6-9, 2019). The Fred Hall Fishing Show turned out to be a real disappointment, so Joe really bailed me out. Joe recommended for our "Date Night" the "Thai District" across the street, and to make sure to get a table on the second floor. The Tiger Steak for me, and the Crab Rice with associated wine selections did not disappoint. Next, was Romeo's Chocolate on Pine Ave, and the "Sipping Chocolate" and "Chocolate Churros" were mind-blowing, wonderful as long as we had the glass of water to cleanse our pallets in between tastes. Unfortunately, there was this 4'11"-ish, 200+ pound, self-described, "Filipino Lesbian" that kept trying to pick a fight with us for being "Straight" people. We just ignored her and she kept getting louder and louder until she was yelling. It was a good Date Night and we put up the invisible wall and ignored her. The room was a bit small, but very clean and comfortable. I stubbed my toe on the bed corner, so I put my back pack there as to not do that again. The refrigerator was stocked with 2 waters and 3 protein drinks. On top of that were two coffee cups, bowls, place setting and Starbucks instant coffees. Hot Tip: Bring some microwave popcorn. The Flat Screen TV is well focused and has a lot of channels. This is not a place to bring/sneak in your high school friends and party: It is forbidden. Also, there is a $250 room cleaning fee is someone smokes in the room/building: this hotel smells nice so don't screw it up! The bathroom's tub required us to grab ahold of the top railing of the shower doors to get in and out of. Thick thirsty clean towels await after for the dry off. If you choose to save money and get a room where you have to share a bathroom, there are 13 rooms which share 3 bathrooms, 1 on the second floor, and 2 on the third floor, and the people using them are all civilized and they are kept clean. Parking is at the Bank of America across the street, 200 foot steps from the hotel at $8/day which you get a clicker from the desk. I will be returning again, definitely. We found this little gem hotel through great reviews and are sooo happy we stayed here last week. Had the pleasure of meeting the owners and they are the sweetest, kindest people that treated us like guest in their own home. Our baby boy had a little accident breaking something in our room and I was so worried about it so went to talk to the owner, he was so kind giving me a peace of mind saying not to worry at all and moved us to another room. He treated us like we were Family, that's the best way I can say it. The maids and front desk were the sweetest, anytime We ran into them they were so friendly and helpful. I've never had such a pleasant experience staying in a hotel. Will recommend this place to anyone and will return soon! read more

I really, really enjoyed my stay at the hotel Royal. I stayed in a room with a private bathroom. It was affordable and really comfortable. The mattress was just the right level of firm, and I slept really well! The rooms are small, but perfect for what I needed. It felt more like a bedroom than a hotel - which for me is a big win. They do nice little things like leave cookies out in the afternoon for guests. The staff were also very friendly. The location is great; 2 bocks from a Vons and a Cider Bar, 12 minutes to the convention center, and less than 10 minutes to 3 different vegan restaurants; which I was thrilled about. There's a small breakfast laid out from 7-10, but there wasn't really anything without dairy and/or lots of sugar. They had oatmeal, but it was flavored Quaker packets. Some almond milk and plain cereal or plain oatmeal would have been appreciated. There was juice and a waffle maker, plus pastries and such. My one less than positive experience was with the bag check. I checked my bag when I checked out, and the front desk staff asked when I'd be returning for it. I said around 2:30. It was pouring today, and when I arrived in a Lyft at 2:32, there was no one at the front desk to get my bag for me. The Lyft waited for me for several minutes and I called the main number. The front desk person answered, and arrived several minutes later; entering the front door of the building from outside. I was rushing to catch a flight and also worried my Lyft driver would leave or be annoyed. Overall though, I'd stay here again. Cute, quaint, and understated. read more
