This place is a hidden gem IMO. Here in VA three years and been looking for a good diner place and finally found it. Been here several times since with family, kids, and friends. Great: burgers, fresh cut fries, all breakfast foods esp. grits, eggs, pancakes. Breakfast at any time of the day! Recommend the reuben sandwich also. I will start off with the young lady who waited on us. She was outstanding. She never stopped the whole time we were there. She took care of everybody with great care. She gets a 5. Next, the iced tea. It was fresh and both sweet and unsweet get a 5. Food...the bbq was a basic bbq. The cole slaw was very good, as were the collards and mashed potatoes. They get a 5. The inside out burger was good. For the money it could have been improved. However they get a 5 for cooking it to the temp ordered. It is a little noisy btw music and people. Acoustics are substandard. What kept this from getting a 4 ia,one employee. She came from the back to,bus a few tables. She was basically throwing the dishes into the bus pan and complaining the who time. She quickly wiped a rag over the table. Our waitress, who was already busting her butt, had to go behind her. Then when we were leaving, the same disgruntled woman was standing up at the bar singing, very loud, along with Ray Charles singing America. We stopped in today at the recommendation of a friend to try something new for a birthday! We couldn't have chosen a better place to celebrate. We were treated so kindly, the food was delicious and quick to come out (for a sit-down restaurant), and everything tasted wonderful! They were even nice enough to put together a Cuban sandwich (which is not on the menu but we had heard they had on special previously) for the birthday boy! They kept our teas full, the manager stopped by to say hello and check on us, and we had a great time. Hotrodder's offers a great selection of classic diner food and then some. Their casual environment makes for a fun, enjoyable, relaxing time. It seems like a very family-friendly environment and we look forward to returning with our kids to try even more of their menu! I ordered the chili burger and it was almost tasteless. I opened the bun and had to actually search for the chili. It was on the bottom and looked to about 1 teaspoon of chili right in the middle. So overall, I got one good bite that tasted like chili. The best part about the burger was the bun which was soft and warm. The fresh cut fries were good but didn't come out until we were already a bite away from finishing our burgers. The service was extremely slow for the amount of people that were there. We got our drinks around the 10 minute mark, then another 10 minutes before our order was taken. We got exactly zero refills on our drinks the whole meal. We were there over an hour and 15 minutes for three burgers, fries and drinks. Given the $60 price for three people, I don't feel it's worth the trip. read more

DONT EAT HERE. Seriously... I have no idea why the reviews are so high at this place. I'm highly suspicious they paid for those reviews or did them theirselves. Food was awful, everything is a basic frozen from the freezer and heated up meal. I went to this place based on the reviews , we ordered the bacon burger , awful. The crab cake and shrimp platter, awful. Crab tasted like it wasn't safe to even eat. The mac and cheese had absolutely no flavor and didn't even taste like cheese, stale pasta noodles aswell. Not to mention the mozzarella sticks as the appetizer , never have I tasted such an awful breading or had such tough cheese while it was hot. All of this would be somewhat expected if their prices were that to match their food. But they way overcharge for some shit you can get out of a Walmart freezer isle. WHY IS THIS PLACE RATED SO HIGH?? I won't be surprised if they find a way to remove my negative review, because like I said there is no way in hell that this place can be rated so high without it being them making the reviews or paying for them. A true family-owned local gem. Hubby and I drove past this place a few times in our adventures in the VA Beach area. Hubby is a very big car guy so the idea of a car theme cafe really excited him. We finally made our way over here and were greeted by the manager. She was super friendly and energetic. After explaining to her that it was our first time here, she was so happy to hear that we decided to come in. She owns the place with her husband, who is the mastermind in the kitchen. Her daughters and their friends work in the restaurant as well. She introduced us to each one of them as well as her family friend who was eating at the table next to us. They were all so friendly! They make their burger buns IN HOUSE and stamp their logo on it. The bread is so light and airy - it really is delicious! For the appetizer, we ordered the Fried Green Tomatoes which were the BOMB-DIGGITY. All the fried green tomatoes that I have ever tried were covered with breadcrumbs and fried but these looked like they were beer battered...or some kind of lighter batter. The change was a pleasant surprise! The tomatoes were delicious and were served with a house cajun sauce I think. If I knew these would be so good, I would have ordered three of these and made this my meal! My husband but the special burger that the manager was bragging about. I forget the name of the burger but it is essentially ground beef mixed with peppers and onions and it is formed into a patty - You will be able to see this in my pictures. I ordered her favorite, which was the Mushroom Swiss burger. Both the burgers were delicious! The only complaint that I have is that our burger patties were so big and juicy that our buns didn't hold up too well. All in all, the atmosphere was great, the people were friendly, and the food was delicious! Hubby was so excited to see all the car photos on the walls and to read all of the local articles. Ever wondered what it's like to step back in time? At Hotrodders Cafe you can find out. Everything in here is basically a throwback to the 50's style diner. I walked in here for the first time recently on a cold winter day and was greeted immediately by the voice of the owner who was back in the kitchen. She told me to sit anywhere I like. It was about 2pm, the lunch rush was over with and dining room was empty with the exception of one other customer. I took a quick look around the dining area and then grabbed a seat at the counter. A moment after that the owner came out of the kitchen and brought me a menu and told me the days specials. I ordered a coke and took a look at the menu. This place is the full monty. There's Apps, Soups, Burgers, Wraps, full Dinner platers, Desserts and on Saturdays they have Breakfast. I ended up selecting a Bacon Cheeseburger, because you know if you read my reviews that a BC is my benchmark item. It came with a side of fries and I also added a bowl of fried okra. Once the food was ordered I took a longer look at this dining room from a bygone era. The floor is checkered in black and white tiles. All of the tables and chairs have a retro design and the chair's and booths are all laminated in a candy apple red vinyl. The walls are covered with photos of hot rods and there's a mural of an old ESSO station, better known as Exxon these days. Each of the tables also has a cardboard car holding the salt, pepper and other condiments. In the back there's an old style juke box with a carved wooden Elvis standing beside it. It kind of reminded me of a wooden indian at a cigar shop. It wasn't long before my food arrived. The meal arrived on a patter with the burger open faced and ready to be dressed. I noticed then that the fries were fresh cut fries as well. I put the burger together and emblazoned on top of the bun was an 'HR'. Nice touch! The food was delicious. My burger was juicy and cooked to perfection, and the okra was outstanding. I love some fried okra. The fries were excellent as well. I'm looking forward to visiting again soon now that I'm off on Saturdays. I can't wait to try out their breakfast. So let's round it up. Delicious meal! Check! Awesome down home friendly atmosphere! I love the food here especially the NC BBQ but the only thing i can say is the serving sizes here when your not getting a dinner meal is ridiculous. I paid 12 for a sandwich and there was maybe 3oz of pork on that thing, the sandwich should honestly only be $6 at most for how much meat is on it. Don't let the 4.5 stars fool you. This is one of my few reviews because it was that disappointing. First of all, the service was good, everyone was kind and cheerful. My girlfriend and I paid ~$36.00 for two burgers with sides, some premium toppings, and two drinks. That, plus a 6% VA tax, a 6% Chesapeake tax, and a 3.5% "Credit card" surcharge brought it up to ~$42, followed by a tip ending the total ~$49. Was the food and portions worth $49? Well, no. The burger did not taste bad, but premium topping and side portions were lacking. I wouldn't leave a review JUST for a bad food/cost ratio; what bothers me is the price combined with a numerous "in your face" things that say "we need money!". The tables are covered in advertising, passing on the CC charge to the customer, a comment on the menu that says "times are tough and we need to make everything count", two donation jars and a whiteboard with their cashapp, Venmo, and PayPal usernames. I just overpaid for your food, so it seems very out of touch. The ambiance is very confused. There's a small theme of people and their old cars which is cool, but then there's random upholstered chairs, a random buffet table, and behind the counter was another odd wooden counter. It's like Quaker Steak and an Old Country Buffet had a baby. Recommend skipping this one. read more

They didn't discount anything at the end and we had to ask them to remove an item from the check since they didn't do it themselves. The sausage dog I had had zero taste and I couldn't bring myself to eat the second one and I hate to waste food. My sister said her chicken sandwich had no taste even with the cheese and mayonnaise. This place is wonderful. It's a quaint family owned restaurant that also participates in community well being. I went with a group of friends on Saturday afternoon. Everyone said they enjoyed their lunch. I had an authentic 1950s lunch of a cheeseburger, fries and coleslaw. (I have convinced myself that if I put lettuce and tomato on my burger and throw some raw cabbage into my meal, via coleslaw, it offsets the effects of the cheeseburger and fries and makes my lunch a healthful one. (Okay, okay, okay! I'm delusional. I own it! Okay?) I'm trying to eat my burgers medium well instead of medium since I recently took the time to truly learn about why it is more dangerous to undercook ground beef than steak. The findings convinced me to change my eating pattern. Consequently my cheeseburger was cooked more than I normally prefer but it was not dried out or tough. It was very tasty. The decor is reminiscent of the 1950s but not quite as authentic as I had imagined. I was especially disappointed to find out that they no longer have the jukebox. I was looking forward to seeing one again. Our server was very pleasant and efficient. Even though our group trickled in slowly one at a time and we stayed a little past their closing time she didn't seem to care or make us feel uncomfortable. The Hotrodder's Cafe is located in a strip mall. There is plenty of parking and we found open spaces right at the front door. It's very accessible and can accommodate a wheelchair easily. read more

We traveled from Virginia Beach because of the name "Hotrodders" since we are car people and almost turned around because it was in a strip mall. We are so glad we gave it a chance! Decor is classic diner meets hot rod, it was seat yourself casual dining. We ordered garlic Parmesan wings and buffalo wings. Sauce is delicious, I would recommend ordering them extra crispy light sauce next time. We also both had an inside out burger. It was huge. My fiancé and I should have split one. It was cooked medium rare as ordered and it was so delicious! Full of flavor, juicy, and the sweet potato fries came with a mildly sweet cinnamon type dip that was complimentary to them. My husband stated the pork chops could have been more flavorful, but he still enjoyed the meal. He really raved about the hush puppies, which I tasted and they were cooked to perfection! Stopped by here after picking peaches at Mt Pleasant Farms. Friendly service, great for families. It was quiet when we arrived as it was between lunch and dinner (around 3:30pm). The waitress was attentive without hovering. My husband got the bacon cheese burger with fresh cut fries, which he enjoyed. I had the crab cake platter, which was delicious. The fried okra was the best! My oldest son ate every bit of BBQ pork although my middle wasn't a fan of the mac & cheese (because it wasn't the boxed kind...kids). My youngest grazed off everyone's plates. All in all a nice relaxing late lunch. We were so full we didn't get to try any of the desserts but they sounded great.
