My partner and I love fresh local and natural food. We seek out unique places to explore and sample. Before we ever visit an establishment these days Yelp is where we come to see what the general public has to say. With this restaurant ranking high on the list for Orcas Island we thought it would be a safe 4 star rating... Unfortunately, public, our experience was not as wonderful as yours. From the outside this place looks like they are up to some serious wood firing. It was impressive to see the wood stacks lining the tiny establishment. The interior decor is modern rustic, kinda beatnik & artsy, natural, funky, fresh, clean. The menu is well written. I enjoyed the creative and yummy words used to describe things on the menu. I ordered the "Stale bread with caviar." We were starving after not having lunch and hoping to have a sumptuous dinner in town. 3 overly salted thinly shaved bread pieces arrived. They were drenched in oil, served with lettuce seeds that had been marinating in a thick extremely bitter jelly-like concoction (makeshift caviar) and on the side of the plate was heavily whipped lard decorated by hand with delicately placed edible local flowers. It was pretty, but tasted like the inside of somebody's old shoe. I asked our server for a suggestion. She recommended the salted pork & cabbage. Of course, we had to order it. Two very small individually hand wrapped & fired salted pork & cabbage wraps arrived plainly on an undecorated plate. These were edible, but not good. What I noticed at this point was that the chef (or whoever is back there in the kitchen) is treating his food like an art show instead of food. His flavors are completely imbalanced and part of creating beautiful food is based on how tasty it is. Especially if something is going to show up plain. I expected the flavors to blow me away. I really just ate this because I was too hungry to cause a scene or go back into the kitchen to find out what the heck this guy was thinking back there. Our burnt pizza arrived in no time flat. It was a nettle, chevre, and potato pizza. Yet it was simply chevre spread on a crust with maybe a bit of olive oil, chevre, and deep fried potato chips laid on top, surely with tweezers so that each could be strategically placed just right... There was no acidity to balance the flavors, no tomato, no balsamic, no lemon, no anything at all to assist with balancing the palate. I got over the flavor imbalance, I forgave the poor guy in back, but as soon as I bit in I was kicked in the jaw by overwhelming burnt crust. This entire meal was comparable to eating something poorly made while camping. The beer and wine were outstanding. I'd come back to drink. Overall, I loved the restaurant... Just not the food... The servers were nice and even turned down the out of place rock music coming from the kitchen as I was trying to enjoy a nice calm glass of wine & quiet conversation on a special day. If you are ever on Orcas Island you have to dine at Hogstone's. Down to earth staff who make amazing food.

HogStone's was suggested to my boyfriend and I. We were very excited to try it out. First off, we were told that we were lucky that someone had cancelled their reservation and they had one table available. Throughout our meal, we watch multiple other couples without reservations come in and be seated. Why lie about that? We ordered a small plate. It described on the menu as bread with some sort of whipped pig fat and salt. What came out to us was essentially a dry pizza crust with garlic. We took a few bites and confirmed that it was exactly what it looked like. The waitress came by a few minutes later with salt and the fat, telling us that it had been served incomplete. Even with those ingredients, it remained a dry bland appetizer. Later in the night, the table beside us ordered the same appetizer and received a loaf type bread. It's not a problem if there is a new chef who messes something up, but please fix it instead of making us eat a dry pizza crust. When we saw that the item had made it onto our bill we were even more upset. We were shocked to be charged for something so incorrect. The pizza we ordered was good, but it was a sauce-less pizza. It was a crust with mozzarella, kale chips, and potato crisps. We both agreed that if we hadn't just eaten a dry pizza crust appetizer, the dryness of our entree pizza wouldn't have bothered us. Bottom line the meals were bland and expensive. We had a super dry pizza crust appetizer, a dry pizza, and a bottle of wine for $80. We would have been happy to pay that had our appetizer not been so unpleasant. On a positive note, the wine list was large and we got a bottle that we both really enjoyed. The atmosphere was unique and personal. We liked our waitress for the most part, other than not rectifying the small plate mistake. read more

I'd give it zero if I could. First, they have the smallest, most crowded interior seating with all the seats guaranteed to put the sun in your eyes. Then there's the food. Almost no non-alcoholic beverages; was limited to warm, stale water. Burnt tasting pizza crust. Almost no vegetarian (no vegan) options despite being an "earth friendly" restaurant. And I'm pretty certain that the tomato base for the pizza was just straight tomato pate out of a can. read more

I have to agree with some of the other reviewers that this place is a bit pretentious, unorganized, and overpriced. The portion of our clam appetizer was pretty abysmal for the price of, well err 15 Clams. It essential tasted like Clams and onions that had been cooked over a camp fire. All well and god, and by all means delictible, but by no means extraordinary in the culinary sense. Our pizza was missing a topping, but they didn't fess up to it until we inquired. Seems a bit odd for what is essentially a pizza joint with only 5 pizzas on its menu. Another annoyance was there wine list comprised entirely of imports (mostly French from what I could tell). I'm not a wine drinker, but I'm not sure why you have to have French wine to go with your wood oven pizza? Though the premium for such a forced pairing is entirely too evident. read more

I had heard great things about the chef and we tried to dine in the restaurant, and they were full. Totally forgivable. We asked to see a menu to order a couple of pizzas to go and the waitress took 20 minutes to get us a glass if wine while we waited, and then realized that she likely never out our order in because it was an hour and no one even acknowledged us. Forgivable, but more difficult. We were even sitting in plain view of the kitchen staff & chefs. I thought having a restaurant was about being on a team? Not our experience at all... I was so sad when we decided to just leave our money for the wine & leave. We are going back to Orcas this weekend, going to try a to go order by phone and see if at least the food holds up to its reputation. If it does, I will happily post a positive food review. Another trip to Orcas, and another dinner at Hogstone. Things have swung back into the more positive column in terms of food, but service is still really lacking. Pros: Delicious margherita pizza with excellent crust. Summer fruits salad was over priced but lovely and well made. $20 corkage very reasonable. Cons: Asked a member of the kitchen staff who brought the pizza to our table for some chili oil to put on top. It never arrived and we had no chance to ask again, as we weren't checked on while we ate. My boyfriend was really excited for hog on his pizza, but we were informed they were out of pig. Also odd that with their focus on hyperlocal ingredients, they have essentially no northwest wine on the wine list. read more

We literally stumbled upon this place 4th of July night and it was such a memorable meal. I am originally from San Francisco and now live in Seattle and have had my share of amazing pizza and I think this pizza in the middle of Orcas Island was excellent. The big leafy salad with shallot dressing was fresh and delicious. The pizza to get is hands down the smoked mozzarella .. I've never had a pizza with this unique flavor before. The crust was chewy and a slightly burnt ..just how I like my thin crust pizza. The wait was a bit long but hey we are on island time aren't we? enjoy a beverage and watch the amazing clouds pass by as you sit by the fire pit and relax. I can't wait to come back.. The smoked mozzarella is calling my name. My husband even joked that we could officially live the island life knowing that we could eat a smoked mozzarella pizza every week. read more

What an experience! Dinner at Hogstone's is something you really need to savor. I actually enjoy eating there alone, sitting at the counter, so I can just soak in the entire experience with a front row view of the kitchen. On my family's first visit to Orcas Island, we meticulously planned-out all of the meals that we would be going-out for. Hogstone's was our very first dinner on Orcas Island. Although the food was delicious, and it was a genuine experience that we will remember and cherish forever, there are some important aspects of this visit that will greatly interest any would-be diners. Food: One of the reasons we chose Hogstone's was because we saw at the bottom of their menu the option that states, "Trust us with your dinner - $45". Prior to coming, our entire table had committed to doing this, so the stipulation that it 'requires whole table participation' was of no issue. What we experienced with the food was unlike anything I had ever experienced before in my life. The food was incredibly unique, and some dishes delivered exquisite results, where others were a little less successful. Here is what we were served for $45. A Sugar Snap Pea with a dressing and some flower (possibly lilac): I honestly do not remember this item that well beyond the above description, but it was incredibly delightful. When I first received it I thought, "This is a pea and a flower. WTF am I going to do with this?" Honestly, though, the flavors married incredibly well and started-off our meal superbly. Duo of Oysters: Next were fresh (raw) oysters with a rhubarb and shallot topping, coupled with a cooked oysters that had a sauce that tasted like basil and lime. Again, I am a little foggy on the second oyster; but wow were both flavorful and fresh. Absolutely a beautiful pairing of ingredients with each respective oyster. The only issue I had with this dish was there were 5 of us, and there were only 4 of each type of oyster -- um? Some sort of (what tasted like) raw shrimp with a sauce: I know, not very descriptive; but absolutely horrible. The texture of the shrimp is why I assume it was raw. It was so unpleasant that I had to wash it down with water to avoid gagging and vomiting. Pizza: We were treated to the Smoked Tomato and some creation with fennel, new alliums, and fresh goat cheese. Both were overwhelmingly delicious. Definitely not like any pizza this New Yorker has ever had; but different in and amazing way. This is not pizza I would eat every night, or even once per month for that matter; but once in a while, this would be truly fantastic. Meat: I cannot remember for the life of me if it was beef or pork (I think it was beef), but it was definitely neck meat with fresh herbs, and hearts of new onions. It was served with a reduction that might have been balsamic-based. Either way, this ranks as one of the top 5 things I have ever put in my mouth. I literally cleaned the plate. It was absolutely amazing. I don't see it on their menu, and have no idea how you would order it; but it was incredible. Fir, chocolate, goat cheese for dessert: I will give them credit for creativity; but I would not order this again if I had the choice. It did not fit-the-bill as a dessert for me, and though the flavors were unique and fresh, we found that they did not go well together. Food: 4 +1 (4; but plus 1 for incredibly unique and creative offerings we will never find anywhere else) Service: This is something important to note for all would-be diners. They are very, very slow. Excruciatingly slow. This can be attributed to their farm-to-table concept, and the fact that they put a lot of care and effort into our mostly-delicious food; however, I would strongly discourage bringing children because of how long we waited. We arrived at 730 PM, and did not leave until after 10:00 PM. Service was friendly, but haphazard and stressed. We loved our experience, and fully understand that service expediency was sacrificed for unique food and dining experience. Service: 4 / 5 Atmosphere: It is a small, yet intimate restaurant with maybe 250 sq ft of actual dining space. I think there were (at most) 7 tables on the interior, but ample seating outdoors. It was cramped and a little busy, but that didn't stop our party of 5+1 child from having an amazing time. The charming atmosphere coupled with the incredible aromas wafting from the kitchen that was 10 feet away was comforting and unique. Atmosphere: 5 / 5 Price: For what we got, at $45 per person, I don't feel as if we got a good value. Honestly, I believe that for that price a bottle or two of wine should have been thrown in at no cost. By the time we were done with tip, tax, and wine, the bill was over $400. This experience, though unique and fun, was not worth over $400 -- maybe $250 at most. Price: 2 / 5 Final Thoughts: As I mentioned, this was an experience that will likely be remembered by all of us, forever. It was our first night on the island, and we had an amazing time in one another's company, but a dining-time as long as ours for three people or less would have been awful. My family and I have eaten at Hogstone's twice in the past 3 months, and I am happy to report that this place serves a solid pizza. I say that as a person from New Jersey, and where I'm from, we take pizza VERY seriously. The first time we came, we had 4 hungry children in tow. Since this place has a slow food reputation, I was worried that our little people were going to put on a sh*tshow if they weren't served in a timely fashion, but alas, they were, and with a delicious margarita-type pie. They were happy and broke nothing. We adults enjoyed a very interesting pizza that had all sorts of things on it I've never encountered as toppings before. There was kale, maybe nettles, and definitely cured hen's egg. It was also delicious and didn't give me that post-pizza bloat I'm used to. All the ingredients were fresh and pared very well. Our next visit was on Halloween. We chose the exact same menu items, but this time eat outside near a bonfire. Again, the waitstaff was friendly and attentive and again, we had a lovely meal. read more

A pretty good, quick pizza. Simplicity rules here, and the food is tasty, but is definitely not for everyone. It seems a little pricey for what it is, and if you like elaborate, heavily dressed dishes you won't find it here (their one salad option is baby arugula, with what seems like oil and reggiano. Good, if like me you like cheese, not so good if you like more). My wife didn't like the food at all though (she balances me out pretty well), which is why I'm giving it a 3, but if you like thin, wood-oven style pizza, you will probably like it here more at a 4-level. Holy mackerel, this place was amazing. Three friends and I sat outside for dinner in the pastoral surroundings and enjoyed a spectacular dinner that was full of thrills from the fresh local ingredients, lovely wines and beers, all with an easy and relaxed ambience. Everything here was delicious and had at least a few completely new and mysterious ingredients or preparations. Our server was very informative and clearly deeply invested in the restaurant's commitment to local and fresh seasonal ingredients. She carefully answered each of our many questions, even the dumb-ish ones. Portions were small and expensive but that encouraged us to deeply savor each bite. We had three appetizers, two pizzas and two desserts plus drinks, which seemed a perfect amount for 4 diners. Appetizers included a small cold composition of Dungeness crab, peas, nasturtiums and lightly charred greens (amazing), and a warm cow cheese that melted in our mouths...two of my friends also got an appetizer of small potatoes fried in a special kind of pig fat and served with small Rosemary leaves that were dried and just barely on fire (!!!) and into which the potatoes could be dipped. The pizzas had thin crusts that were lightly charred, one with smoked tomatoes and fresh goat cheese--absolutely terrific--and the other with greens and fresh cheese...I must confess I have forgotten the exact ingredients and I can't look them up online because the menu rotates so often, based on what is fresh and available, that they can't really post the menu. Oh well, whatever it was, it was fantastic. Dessert was a rhubarb sorbet that was spec-TAC-ular. I will eagerly return here whenever I get a chance to visit Orcas Island again. read more

Love, love, LOVE this place! We stumbled upon Hogstone's while looking for a place to eat Black Friday. When we had been in town earlier in the day, nothing was open. Not to be burned again at dinner time, we decided to start calling around for reservations to no avail. Naturally we were stoked when we drove around at night and discovered that Hogstone's was open - and even better - we could be seated! The store is small and you basically go up to the counter, order, and then grab a table (there is table service, but it's not entirely "full service"). There were a few 4-person tables along one wall and a big group had come in earlier and had put together a few tables (I think there were either 10 or 12 of them in their party). It wasn't so crowded that it was too loud, but it's definitely not your date night destination (that is, if you're going for the romantic ambiance). We got a mixed green salad to share and two pizzas - the Orcas margarita and the Hog. Both were really good. I also love that the ingredients are fresh. My hubby is a big of a gardener and he was explaining to me how the greens were the right "in season". The pizzas also had gluten free crust! Our meal was about $40 after we had included a tip. I thought that wasn't bad at all considering it's island food, and it was all fresh, local ingredients. Clearly the chef here pays attention to what is in season and planned a good menu around it. I will definitely come here again when we visit Orcas. read more

A very small farm to table; that would be the best way to describe it. We came late, so we did not have to wait, but in the summer be prepared. It is a small place, maybe 10 tables, and, at the time, one tiny oven. They did have a fire pit that was nice to sit around with a beer. Service was good, but because of the cooking space the food took a long time to arrive. That being said the pizza and salad was excellent. The pizza is not the classic pizza (pepperoni and Hawaiian are not on the menu). The crust has great flavor and balance with the crisp to the chew ratio. The topping were fresh and flavorful. I did overhear them say they were either putting in a bigger oven or another one. This is a far cry from the pizza I had growing up on the island. There are people, like the owners, who are taking advantage of the island's farming potential. read more

We searched tonight for hours trying to find dinner, but everyone was booked up! We came across Hogstone and even though they had a full dining room, and they quickly sat my husband, me, and our toddler on the bar stools. They saw the hunger in my eyes and took our food order right away and moved us to a table quickly when one came available. We ordered and split the goat cheese salad, the margherita style pizza and the pumpkin / pear dessert. All 3 were amazing, my only critique was I wish we had more dessert! The pizza was cooked perfectly, had excellent flavor and one of our servers, Alex, helped find the perfect glass of wine for me (A French Malbec). Hogstone's is amazing! One of the best meals I've ever had. My husband and I came here as we have been wanting to try this place forever. The restaurant has great lighting and our server was very welcoming and gave us great suggestions off the menu for food and wine. We ordered the salad with burnt onion vinaigrette, potatoes with whipped cheese, leeks with egg and goat cheese, and pizza, and two desserts. This did not disappoint! You could taste that everything was farm to table; I still don't know how salad could be exceptional but it was. It was one of the best meals we had while we were on the island. Wow. Can't give enough praise to the tasting menu. Chef Jay Blackinton delivers simple but complex flavors in all his dishes. Truly a amazing person in his craft. I had been there a year earlier and his talents have definitely exceeded the last visit which was amazing. The brilliance of texture in every dish was amazing. There was so much crunch in multiple dishes that showed restraint and thought. The staff was amazing as always Steven was attentive and informative with the professionalism and amazing table side presence. The wine pairing was superb always bringing different varieties of not mainstream wines and grapes that pair perfectly with his dishes. Super high quality ingredients, but the dishes fell short of taking advantage of them. The good: The oysters we had were fresh and delicious and the pizza crust was impeccably done. The not so good: The beet salad felt a bit like a mushy granola as part of it was puréed, and the toppings on the pizza were extremely sparse making it seem like we had ordered a simple flat bread - to be clear, I'm not comparing this to cheap, cheesy pizzas, but to other top notch pizza places that also serve those of the 'fancier' variety like Hogstone. This was such a good find for our group of foodies spending the weekend on Orcas Island! The pizza was AMAZING. We started off with two pizzas for our group of 4 and ended up ordering a third because we loved them so much. Do not come here if you are a narrow minded papa john's eater--this is NOT a deep dish extra pepperoni place. It is a fine dining, cozy atmosphere place, with high quality and delicious ingredients. Our waitress was fun and knowledgeable about the ingredients and genuinely cared about our experience. The only reason I am rating 4/5 of stars (trust me the food was 5/5) is because we had a reservation but still waited about 10 minutes before being seated inside, rather than the really cute and cozy outdoor tables during a beautiful sunset. Yes, the prices are a little high for the quantity of food you receive, but you really are paying for the quality of fresh, farm to table ingredients. Coming from Portland where we have a plethora of amazing restaurants, Hogstone's was recommended for us to try while in Eastsound. From our very first interaction, we were greeted with a snobby, unfriendly attitude. We got there 15 minutes early hoping to have a glass of wine before we were seated. The host acted like that was a ridiculous request. Our reservation was lost, even though they had confirmed earlier with us earlier in the day. For the amount of money that we were spending, the service was lacking. And we were shocked that for such an established pizza restaurant, we were unable to get staples like fresh ground pepper and parmesan. We were excited to have a nice meal out on our honeymoon, but really could've skipped this restaurant all together. read more

This place sucks. Pretension without quality. The menu is rotating and locally sourced--fine. However, the owners are lazy. Instead of just writing the current menu of the day, they print a menu that includes the type of ingredient your food will include (e.g. pizza that comes with: greens, alliums, tomato sauce). It would not be difficult for them to specify WHICH allium you are about to quasi enjoy. The menu is extremely limited--again, fine. However, I would prefer that the items on the limited menu tasted good. We ordered a smoked beet pureed concoction that was so disgusting I couldn't eat it. It just tasted like liquid smoke. I do commend them in that they made it extremely difficult to taste the beets, not easy to do. The pizza we had here wasn't even the best pizza we had that day. We had enjoyed a very tasty slice at the Farmer's Market earlier. The dough of this pizza was somehow burnt and soggy at the same time. The owner crams so many tables into the space that it was uncomfortable. To be fair, the other people in the restaurant were extremely obnoxious which certainly didn't help. Hard pass. read more

Good wood fire oven pizza. I have tried many excellent wood fire pizza restaurants in many cities and this one excels due to the fresh ingredients. The crust was good, no better or worse than most restaurants I've tried. The ingredients were amazing - soft mozarella, the tomato sauce and herbs on our margarita pizza. We also tried a seasonal kale pizza - the flavor of the crunchy kale on top was great but I think the kale overpowered the white base overall and the pizza ended up much drier than the margarita. I would therefore try a meat based pizza next time. The restaurant was quite busy but given how little time it takes to make a wood-fire pizza it still took some time, so it's better not to be super hungry when you head there! They are only open Friday-Sunday (except perhaps the summer tourist season). There is usually a wait at meal times, so it's better to go early or late. They don't take reservations either. The prices are on the higher side for wood-oven pizza but nothing is cheap on the island. I liked the casual vibe of the place with rough hewn wood tables and chairs, an outdoor picnic type seating area and mason jar drinking glasses and home made candles to complete the experience. read more

It was rainy when we went, so no outdoor seating, though it looked like it would be delightful when the weather is nice. We didn't have a reservation but were very happy to sit at the window. The service wasn't the fastest ever, but we enjoyed the atmosphere and conversation. Our server even apologized for the delay and thanked us for our patience, but we weren't in a rush. Extensive wine list, lots of European wines. Also some very interesting beers. Server was knowledgeable and was able to answer our questions. Our server did give us a heads up that the appetizers were very small. We ordered Dungeness crab with "plants from the sound," not knowing exactly what to expect. It was delicious!! There was a big slice of heirloom tomato on top of a healthy serving of crab, with a very thin smoked piece of bull kelp in between (light, crispy, and smokey), and a little side of "sea beans" (which my husband has also seen called "beach asparagus" in Alaska). We ordered two pizzas: smoked tomato and goat cheese, and cow's cheese, heirloom tomatoes and cured egg yolk. These were the most outstanding pizzas we've ever had! All the ingredients were great, well balanced. So, so good. Man. Mm mm mm. Delicious. Our meal ended up being more expensive than we anticipated to spend that evening, but it was so worth it. Wow. Just... wow. I'm enough of a savage to reflexively scoff at tiny, precious dishes, but those plates are little worlds of magic at Hogstone's School of Kitchencraft and Wizardry. We had salmon tartare, the pizza with hay-smoked something, and a hazelnut dessert that was absolutely mesmerizing. Incredible place. Call early for a reservation. read more

Love this place. Great food and a nice atmosphere. You eat outside on the picnic style tables, definitely something to recommend. Chef is very innovative and definitely worth showing off. While not the cheapest place definitely worth every penny. Always a favorite for us. Lots of good restaurants in Orcas, this is one of the best. Last tome tried the beef pizza, & mushroom (2 separate pizzas). Both were incredible. read more

Exceptionally good. The waitstaff was super friendly, encouraging, and knowledgeable. The oysters were RIDICULOUSLY good and the weather was just perfect so sitting outside was just right. If you're on Orcas for a day or so and have the time (and the money... ) it's definitely worth a stop. read more

This place is over the top, pizza's that will impress. Got my order in about 15 minutes. Wood fired is the only way to go. very tasty, the crust has that smokey flavor and the chewy ness that really satisfied my carb craving. I will have the rest for breakfast to really give it a test. read more
