Time for a review update! Yes I'm still giving Hogstone 4 stars, but the circumstances were quite different this visit (aka Covid). Hogstone was just doing pickup, so we called in ahead of time (a little after 5?) on a Sunday to place our order. We were given a time to gather the goods (6:15ish) then patiently waited while sipping some wine out on our deck. No complaints. Our three pizzas and three appetizers were ready a few minutes after the designated pickup time, then we drove the short distance back to our vacation home. Needless to say I was excited for some gourmet cheesy carbs. For pizzas, we went with the "Tomato" ($14) which my mostly vegan sister ordered. The 12" diameter pie was topped with tomato sauce, slivers of onion and garlic, plus fresh herbs, of course. I did not try this option, although my sister seemed to enjoy it enough and was happy a vegan pizza was on the actual menu. I went with the "Quickly Pickled Summer Squash" ($24) topped with Hay smoked goat cheese and scallions. I'm not a huge fan of smoked food items in general, although the smokey flavor wasn't toooo overpowering. The squash pizza needed something else to balance out the flavors (to suit my taste), so I came up with a quick solution--more on that later. My mom chose the "Roasted Stupice Tomato" ($26) topped with fresh sweet corn, pickled fennel, mozzarella and aged ladysmith... which I believe is a type of cheese. This pizza was the best out of the two I tried. The flavors were well balanced and it was simply good. These pizzas are best consumed right away, when fresh and hot, so keep that in mind when ordering. Because there were four of us splitting dinner, we also decided to order three appetizers. We chose to get two orders of the "Smashed, Chilled & Marinated Cucumbers" ($13) served with hazelnut "condiment" and grilled berry sauce. Okay damn this was tasty. It was fresh, crunchy, creamy, nutty, sweet, and savory all in one tiny to-go container. Yes the serving size is SMALL so thankfully we ordered two. It is definitely a bit pricey for the amount of food you get, so if you're on a budget just stick to ordering pizza. We also went with a mushroom appetizer, also delightful. The sauce on the mushrooms was luscious so don't let any of that go to waste... I was dipping pizza crusts right up in there and also spooned some of the mushrooms on top of the squash pizza, highly recommend that combo. Is this the best pizza I've had? No but it's good and I always appreciate the usage of local, seasonal ingredients. The bill can get a bit pricey if you go for other menu items, as tasty as they are. read more

Visited Orcas Island to escape work and Seattle for the weekend. I wasn't sure we would find a good dining experience on small island but we're always down for an adventure. We love pizza so we had to try this spot. Of course no dine in, because COVID, so we dropped in to order take out. We waited at least 30 mins for the food. We order two margherita pizzas (our fav) and the fried chicken. The margherita was ok, nothing to write about but the fried chicken surprised me, very flavorful, moist, and crispy. This place is crazy in the summer so we do not stop in. But a nice Sunday in March is a good time to go. The staff is not so harried, the food is often more experimental and the vibe is wonderful as these folks figure out what they have and how they want to cook it. On our most recent visit we had an elaborate beet dish which included apple cider ice and last summer's pickles. It was followed by a superb charred cabbage that had been frequently basted with a plum reduction. It was nutty, charred and seeet all at once. And then we had a smoked tomato pizza with pork followed by a fir mousse. All these dishes were inventive, tasty and a joy to ponder. The staff is knowledgeable, friendly and genuinely caring that you have a great experience. The place is fun in the summer but to really appreciate it come when the crowds are gone. A WARNING: like many Island establishments Hogstone closes for part of the off season so make sure you check when they will be open before heading over. read more

Hands down best crab roll I've ever had, only complaint is I wish it was a little bit bigger but understandable since it's only $20. I say make the sandwich bigger and charge $30 for it. But honestly I'll probably just order two next time, it was so insanely good. The mushroom pizza was easily one of the best pizzas my husband and I have ever had. So flavorful and cooked just perfectly. Unfortunately the squash one I didn't care for much. Tasted way too smokey. We will definitely be back for the crab roll and mushroom pizza!! read more

What just happened... how did we spend $70+ for a "meal" that left all of us starving? One appetizer was (truly delicious! but) essentially one brussel sprout, a small piece of shaved leek, and an egg for $16. Between the three of us, that was approximately one bite each. $15 for a tiny plate of potatoes and cheese, and the oysters were $3 each. I'm happy to throw down that kind of dough for a filling meal, but we all left the table still very hungry. It was disappointing and frustrating. The menu should be much more clear that the "plates" are only tastes. I've been here at least 3 times in the past years... and have never felt so cheated. I would have certainly given Hogstone 5 stars in the past, and have recommended it to friends visiting the island. Has something changed?? What a lovely, intimate restaurant! I visited this restaurant after a recommendation from a friend and it definitely lived up the rave reviews! It was a cold, rainy evening and I was looking for something to warm me up and wood-fired pizza seemed like a great option! As soon as I walked in, the cozy, warm, and inviting ambiance drew me in even more! The service was spectacular and extremely attentive. I decided to start my meal with their house oysters and they did not disappoint! They were topped with this mignonette and I could have eaten a dozen on my own! For my main course, I settled on the cow cheese, goat cheese, and herbs pizza. Each pizza is 12 in, thin-crust, beautifully crafted, and topped with fresh ingredients! From start to finish, I was impressed. Next time I'm in orcas, I will definitely be back! Give this place a try and you won't be disappointed! read more

Stopped by here for a quick dinner a few days ago. You order at the counter and they'll deliver your pizza to your table. You can see them making it at the back of the kitchen in a brick oven. They only have a few different pizza, slightly spendy for the one size they offer (about dinner plate size). We ordered 2 pizzas - I think the dough was good and the toppings are fresh and tasty. I knocked off one star for inconsistency though. One pizza was definitely undercooked while the other was perfectly cooked. I think it's a good choice if you're in the mood for pizza at Orcas. read more

Oh where to begin with this restaurant that is a tad pretentious. "Wood Oven" is featured prominently in the name of the place, the sign out front, the web site and the stamp on the pizza boxes. Yet when we showed up the oven was spewing a gas flame. I asked where the wood burning oven was and got the response that they hope to have one at the restaurant soon. What?! They do have one at their farm but since I was eating at their restaurant and not their farm that didn't do me much good. One would think that a restaurant that touts their wood oven would maybe have one. I was further taken aback when I was charged a $2 take out fee for my two pizzas. Take out fee? Was that to cover the cost of the two cardboard boxes? When people dining in take some food home are they charged a doggie bag fee for that? They should be thrilled that we were taking food out and not dining in. We didn't clog up the line that was forming, we didn't take up space at any of their tables, we didn't need any waitstaff service, we didn't drink any water which they'd have to provide and clean up our glasses later along with any cutlery we may have used. Okay enough complaining, how was the pizza? It was better than average, particularly for this area. The toppings were flavorful and it wasn't over cheesed. The dough was a decent mix of chewy and crispy but could have used more crispy bite (which the heat of a wood burning oven would have provided.) Overall though I felt ripped off. Some people have complained about the price of the pizza. Since we were able to split one and save another for later I didn't think the price was out of line, particularly for the quality of ingredient and remote location. The $2 charge for takeout was annoying but I really have a problem with a restaurant that bills their wood oven when it's not. There's a huge difference between a gas oven and a wood-fired one. read more

If I was reviewing just the pizza, this place is 5+ stars for sure! I tried 3 of their specialty pizzas and they were all amazing. My favorite by far was the pork, pickled chard, and onions pizza. The ingredients were so fresh and the crust is unbelievable!! So thin and crispy in the middle and then smokey and chewy around the edges. You can roll me in their pizza dough and I'll die happy. Such quality pizzas and they really are worth ~$15-20 each. I would trust any of their specialty pizzas. Really though, stick to the pizzas here. I was really unimpressed with the appetizer plate that I tried. It was two chunks of dungeness crab on top of a piece of kelp with a smear of sauce for $16. Tasty, but gone in two bites. I had a terrible experience with the service. I saw an empty table on my way in and was hoping to be seated there. The hostess told my boyfriend and I that there were no tables, so we ended up getting a pizza to go. A couple walked in two minutes after us and she seated them easily at the table we saw outside. It was frustrating to hear that, but we let it go and waited 30 minutes for our one to-go pizza. We came back again the next day and saw two empty tables outside. She told us that there were no available tables again. We let her know that we saw the empty tables before she wanted to seat us inside. I just wanted the entire experience of sipping a glass of wine on a picnic table with the perfect pizza next to the pile of chopped wood... is that too much to ask for?? My fiancé and I are super carnivorous people, but the two pizzas we enjoyed were vegetarian and we couldn't have been happier. Hogstone wood oven.... I envisioned pizza and beer... what we got was so much more. This place is a gem. Grilled spring greens and lamb. Pizza with fresh cow cheese ... dessert was simple: the best ice cream I've ever had with drizzle of reduction. I can't even think properly trying to describe this meal.... my brain shuts down and my mouth salivates. The decor is simple. They pride themselves in their local in season ingredients. Very friendly service. I have not one complaint or suggestion to improve the experience of dining here. I will be coming back here when I'm on the island again. read more

I get it. James Beard chef, kitschy and fun pork menu, great seating, spectacular wine list... Our experience was a bit different. Only three tables had any shade so be prepared to be cooked if the sun is out since heaven forbid they put an umbrella out. Menu: small plates section had two salads, oysters, and a cheese dip that they serve with wooden spoons but nothing to dip in it. And then pizzas, of which only one had any pork on it. This a small place (more seating outside in good weather) with some very original wood-fired pizzas and a few small plates. There were 5 pizzas on the menu for our visit ranging from $15-25 (12"). Ours had smoked tomato and cured egg amongst its ingredients. The salad and local oysters we had to start were the freshest we've ever had. Service was good, though we did receive the wrong pizza to start, which was corrected. They are only open 3-4 days a week this time of year so check and make reservations. I cannot find appropriate words to describe how much I enjoyed our dinner here at Hogstone. We had fantastic wine, an INSANELY DELICIOUS chicken shareable plate, two pizzas which were beyond scrumptious... and the desert, which was one of the most delicious treats I've ever had. The service was FANTASTIC. We've eaten at Canlis And the Herbfarm, among other Seattle-foodie spots, and HANDS DOWN I would come here first if I had to pick. Friendly, welcoming, delicious. Ok, not too much I can add to the existing commentary, but I will try and add context to the frequent comments of "small servings/expensive price" Example 1: Carrots. $9 for 3 small carrots sliced in half and topped with mini serving of smoked egg white. Maybe skip the smoking egg white and trim cost. It didn't add much. Oh, and did I mention the carrots were not cooked. Served crunchy raw. So hey you saved staff time not cooking. Example 2: blistered potatoes with cheese sauce. $12. 4 small melon ball size potatoes and a bit of melted cheese Example 3: Oysters on half shell. $3. About average In fairness thought, the flat bread pizza was average size for the price. So if i return, will order a couple of those. read more

Honestly? One of the few places we visited on Orcas that understood layers of flavor! Finishing salt on the greens??? YES THANK YOU FOR CRYING OUT LOUD. Sure it's not "ideal" with COVID restrictions (having to call ahead, wait...), but what is? Wait for good food. It's fine. You have nothing else to do, you're on an island. We came into this restaurant thinking that it would be great tasting and gourmet. But we found out that this had bad service. We were made to wait for 10 mins even though we had a reservation. The pizza itself was overcooked, the crust burnt in places and the kale charred black. It was extremely salty as well :( We told the waitress that the pizza wasn't good, but she didn't respond. She never asked us for water, but chose to stay behind chatting with the rest of the staff. I had to go to the counter to ask her to take our money and let us get out. In summary, this was the worst pizza place we have been to in a long time. East sound has superb restaurants around this place - this one isn't one of them. read more

Was really looking forward to some great pizza and beer in town. I'm not too picky of a guy, but pizza and beer shouldn't be too tall of an order. We arrived early because when we went by the first day it was packed. We were the second group in the door and asked if we had a reservation. I was kind of surprised that a small pizza place takes reservations... No mention of that on the phone recording when we called earlier. No big deal, sat at the bar. Service was slow despite being fully staffed and not having more than us and one other two person party. Here's the short: One star for getting us decent pizza (don't be snarky here, we both know kale isn't an herb) and one star for having beer. I won't dock you for a pint being $6.5 or $7. I guess it's going to be more expensive at the fancy place in town instead of the normal pizza place. Bottom line - Next time I'll pass and go to the pub or the other pizza place. read more

This restaurant was a major disappointment. There was no menu on the website which should have been the first red flag. We made reservations and when we arrived we were told we had to sit at a picnic table outside as they were not providing seating inside. So, we ordered fresh oysters which were in a beautiful dill oil and amazing. We selected a nice bottle of red. The dinner menu was simply cheese pIzza....over priced cheese pizza! No protein at all! It was a little misleading to eat cheese pizza at a restaurant called Hogstone. Will not be back again. read more

The pizza easily deserves five stars. The tomatoes were excellent, the cheese, the crust, everything. Good wine selection. Have to say that the apps or anything that was a non-pizza item were solid, (the lamb tartare was the best!) but tiny if you're looking to share and try different things with a few people with a few people. They are definitely not a family style thing in that regard. If you grow kale yourself, I think you know that you could throw another handful or so onto a plate without a second thought. They should do that too. The fact that it's outdoors is awesome in the sense that you get to enjoy the surroundings and let the kids run around. I'm pretty sure that the waiter with screamesque face, weirdly dressy shoes and the snazzy striped shorts wouldn't agree though: he was very overly concerned about the possibility of one of them breaking one of the glass lanterns hanging around the paths. I have an idea for him to ease his woes: move them! (They don't light anything up in the day time anyhow.) read more

Just keep walking, biking, or driving past this place. It sounds enticing, looks inviting, your fiends might insist on it, but use your better judgement, don't fall into the the trap. It's enticing, but infuriating. There's an annoyingly obvious localism in practice and it is a complete rip-off. If you are visiting the island move on to consider a different place to eat, there are plenty of them, this place will hands down ruin your night. Leave it to the locals to doubtfully keep this place afloat. Not only are the servers completely inept, the food is below mediocre and priced as if it were golden nuggets. We were at our table for about 15 minutes on an uncrowded night before we were even approached. Had a pizza and a Dungeness crab "plate", note that the "plate" is about a tablespoon of food, about as outlandishly priced and presented as it gets. I've never seen something with a trace of the main ingredient cost so much and taste so mediocre. Consider it had about a $1 of ingredients and cost $20. That is about a 1500% markup if you consider the "artistry." The pizza was good, but overpriced, nothing special. Not sure exactly what is going on here, maybe if you live here, there is different menu, attitude and experience. If you are visiting, choose somewhere else to spend your money. You can't go wrong skipping this place. read more

I paid $14 for a single, golf-ball-sized potato. Granted, it was an heirloom variety of wax potato. It was grown in island soil. It was undeniably lovingly cooked in hay and was accompanied by a small dollop of island-made chevre. But it was still a potato. ONE potato. And it tasted identical to any other potato. Farm-to-table cooking can unfortunately fall victim to a strong undercurrent of absurdity. Food grown or cooked in a meticulous way should have some representative flavor reflecting that effort besides the price, and just because you can cook potatoes in hay does not mean you necessarily should. read more

My partner and I love fresh local and natural food. We seek out unique places to explore and sample. Before we ever visit an establishment these days Yelp is where we come to see what the general public has to say. With this restaurant ranking high on the list for Orcas Island we thought it would be a safe 4 star rating... Unfortunately, public, our experience was not as wonderful as yours. From the outside this place looks like they are up to some serious wood firing. It was impressive to see the wood stacks lining the tiny establishment. The interior decor is modern rustic, kinda beatnik & artsy, natural, funky, fresh, clean. The menu is well written. I enjoyed the creative and yummy words used to describe things on the menu. I ordered the "Stale bread with caviar." We were starving after not having lunch and hoping to have a sumptuous dinner in town. 3 overly salted thinly shaved bread pieces arrived. They were drenched in oil, served with lettuce seeds that had been marinating in a thick extremely bitter jelly-like concoction (makeshift caviar) and on the side of the plate was heavily whipped lard decorated by hand with delicately placed edible local flowers. It was pretty, but tasted like the inside of somebody's old shoe. I asked our server for a suggestion. She recommended the salted pork & cabbage. Of course, we had to order it. Two very small individually hand wrapped & fired salted pork & cabbage wraps arrived plainly on an undecorated plate. These were edible, but not good. What I noticed at this point was that the chef (or whoever is back there in the kitchen) is treating his food like an art show instead of food. His flavors are completely imbalanced and part of creating beautiful food is based on how tasty it is. Especially if something is going to show up plain. I expected the flavors to blow me away. I really just ate this because I was too hungry to cause a scene or go back into the kitchen to find out what the heck this guy was thinking back there. Our burnt pizza arrived in no time flat. It was a nettle, chevre, and potato pizza. Yet it was simply chevre spread on a crust with maybe a bit of olive oil, chevre, and deep fried potato chips laid on top, surely with tweezers so that each could be strategically placed just right... There was no acidity to balance the flavors, no tomato, no balsamic, no lemon, no anything at all to assist with balancing the palate. I got over the flavor imbalance, I forgave the poor guy in back, but as soon as I bit in I was kicked in the jaw by overwhelming burnt crust. This entire meal was comparable to eating something poorly made while camping. The beer and wine were outstanding. I'd come back to drink. Overall, I loved the restaurant... Just not the food... The servers were nice and even turned down the out of place rock music coming from the kitchen as I was trying to enjoy a nice calm glass of wine & quiet conversation on a special day.
