we are usually not in that area much but after an appointment in commack went there for breakfast, the egg sandwich was very good, eggs cooked right and good coffee, since then we have come back and when we travel get off at exit 52, order sandwiches and pick up a dozen bagels plus six free ones like old times. What a disappointment. I normally come here all the time as the bagels are always fresh and their egg sandwiches are great. But I may need to rethink my next bagel excursion. I understand prices are high. $4.50 for a bagel with flavored cream cheese is insane but it's not even the issue. For this price, there should be at least an adequate amount of cream cheese. This is also the 2nd time I've been there in the last month and dealt with 2 different people who had awful attitudes. I've been in customer service long enough to know that not every day is gonna be rainbows and butterflies. I was, to paraphrase the sage Detroit rapper Danny Brown, rushing as a kid just to be grown up. And although I now am (as I observed in my review of Jericho Tires) an adult, I'm still under a thumb. Sure, I enjoy more freedoms than I did before the landmark ages of 13, 16, 18, 21. I can address most adults by first name. I can buy liquor -- lots of liquor. I can walk into a strip club, as long as I pay the cover. Which I won't. But again, the thumb. The thumb of responsibility. The thumb of holding down a job. The thumb of having to take care of others. The middle finger of adulthood. What does this have to do with bagels? Well, dear reader, let me tell you. If you've been reading my other reviews (and if not, why not?) you'll know that I currently have a Saturday morning routine that consists of going to Costco (which I previously reviewed), an odyssey preceded, if my daughter joins me, by a trip to Chick-fil-A (which I also previously reviewed). I don't mind running these weekly errands. Not only do I have control over what's coming into the house, I consider these trips mini-vacations where I escape the thumb and feel like my own person. I'm reminded of a young-dad Louis CK bit where he trashes all the toilet paper so he has an excuse to go out. I like Chick-fil-A (I gave 'em four stars, meaning "Yay! I'm a fan"), but I won't usually get breakfast because I practice intermittent fasting before noon. But I don't mind stopping for Chick-fil-A for [daughter's] breakfast. It's a quick to-go order when I use the app, it's not expensive, and it's this little "thing" [daughter] and I share, the kind of bonding I hope will be remembered at my wake; when everyone else is struggling to summon a positive memory of my living years, she can say: "Dad often took me to Chick-fil-A, and that more than makes up for the other things he's done over the years that made me spend so much on therapy that I had to forgo buying a new flying car." (I plan to live to an age old and ripe enough to own flying cars.) (Incidentally, between Chick-fil-A and Costco, we often swing by the drive thru at the Starbucks next door. I haven't reviewed that Starbucks yet -- stay tuned!) Toward the end of my Costco journey I'll receive the clarion call from [wife], [son], or both, requesting I return with something to eat, despite their easy access to a limited but suitable assortment of breakfast foodstuffs within the four walls of the abode from which they contacted me. But they're not in the mood for cereal or eggs or even the supermarket bagels we have in the house. They want a fresh hot bagel or an egg sandwich, two breakfast staples that form the foundation of the Long Island food pyramid. So, dear reader, because my role within the current family dynamic is something between "humble servant" and "resentful serf," I acquiesce to a breakfast run at House of Bagels, which is less a house than one third of a small strip mall behind a larger strip mall and a McDonald's, but I understand why they call the place "House of Bagels" because "Small Strip Mall Behind Larger Strip Mall & McDonald's Bagels" is a bit unwieldy to render on a sign. It's a very narrow establishment. Like many other bagel shops, the first thing you need to do upon entering is ask a random customer among the disorganized assembly, "Are you already being helped?" or "Are you the end of the line?" or, if you're feeling a little whimsical, "Why did you steal my penguin?" Order accuracy, as well as the time it takes for your order (accurate or not) to be filled can vary, especially if you're ordering something requiring more than a slash of butter or schmear of cream cheese (i.e., an egg sandwich) on a crowded Saturday morning, which I often, reluctantly, am. Why, once it took so long to receive my order that I was able to read the entire "The Myth of Sisyphus" by Albert Camus on my phone followed by my well-worn edition of "Goodnight Gorilla," which I always carry on my person. But no matter what, the folks behind the counter are courteous and friendly, when they're not friendly and courteous. And to ensure an accurate order, it might pay to hand the employee a scrap of paper with your breakfast desires clearly described -- and in English, not some kind of impenetrable code requiring the Enigma machine to decipher. And I am pleased with their wares. The bagels are among the better ones in town, and (more importantly) they know how to whip up an egg sandwich, which is a welcome respite if it's time to break my fast for the energy to return to the thumb. We ordered 12 bagels and there was a promotion going on where if you order a dozen, you get 6 bagels free. Quantity-wise, there was more than enough. However, the cream cheese here is pretty pricy, costing almost $3 for a small 5-tablespoon amount of flavored cream cheese (we ordered a sweet nut-based cream-cheese). We ordered 6 egg everything bagels among our other bagels, and were a bit disappointed at how hard it was to tell which were the Everything bagels and which were not. In fact, the stuff on the everything bagels (such as the poppy seeds, onion, and sesame seeds that are usually on everything bagels fell off in the bag after just a day so it was even harder to identify which bagel was or was not an everything bagel). Consequently, the Everything bagels didn't really taste like everything bagels. Since everything bagels are my favorite, I think the way those bagels tasted didn't really make me want to come back to this place even though they have a pretty generous promotion. read more

I've been coming here for aprox 20 yrs. I went in today at 0600 for 2 egg onion bagels, a pumpernickel, a half of chicken salad and a pumpernickel bagel lightly toasted with scallion cream cheese and lox. Well I was told they had no egg onion bagels and they haven't for a while now. Very disappointing so I walked out. The main reason I came in was for an egg onion bagel. The other items were just extraneous I'm doing a 16 hr shift and probably would've had that all; then a bagel left over for tomorrow's breakfast. Every time I come here there is a long wait . Today I dropped in to get a roast beef and cheese on a bagel and literally has to wait 20 minutes although it was just myself and another person.
