Make reservations or you'll be waiting like I was!!! This was my first trip to Houston's and I'll definitely be returning. We came here on a Thursday night and it was packed. We probably waited for 40-45 minutes but it was worth it. While waiting, we sat at the bar for a drink and ordered the artichoke. MMMMMMMM!!! It was grilled to perfection and the accompanying aioli was amazing. Would definitely come back for this but I also want to try the spinach dip everyone talks about. For food, I had the ahi salad and the bf had the hawaiian steak. The ahi salad was amaazzzzzing!! The fish was extremely fresh and melted in my mouth. It had a good sear on it and was seasoned extremely well. The salad dressing had a good tang to it that was complemented by big pieces of fresh avocado and mango. Pricey but worth it. The steak was to die for. Well seasoned, well cooked, juicy and tender to perfection. I sound like an advertisement, right? Well, it was THAT GOOD. We got the baked potato as well- loaded with sour cream, chives, butter, and bacon. Droooooool. In addition to all this, we got a side of the seasonal veggie which was spaghetti squash topped with tomato sauce and basil. I really liked it but a lil plain for the bf. It comes with a side of coleslaw and fries. Minus 1 star for "the bad": -Our server was kind and gave us a few minutes to think about what to order. However, she never came back. After waiting 15 minutes, we had to flag down another server who kindly took our order. Our original server never apologized and didn't check up on us throughout our meal. Just an A-OK meal for dinner for party of three during the weeknights. I'll rank in the order of the food I enjoyed the most to least. #1 - Chicago-Style Spinach Dip - Would recommend anyone to get it. It was a good portion for a party of our size (3 people). #2 - Warm Five Nut Brownie - It's really sweet but the ice cream brownie combination was amazing. #3 - Kampachi Yellowtail Sashimi - It was tasty and light. The texture from the kale and the sashimi complimented each other better than expected. #4 - Thai Tuna Roll - It's crunchy and is definitely not the typical sushi flavors. It wasn't bad but I didn't have much care for it after a bite or two. #5 - Center-Cut Filet - It just didn't meet up to its value. There was a bit more fat in it than I would have liked. A regular here, just ate dinner with the family, my 2 1/2 yr old child and my wife. We enjoyed the food and service, my child was well behaved for the most part. Closer to 9pm, after the last call, my child started crying because both our cell phones ran out of battery (he was watching tv). We were trying to console him and packing up so we could leave soon. Out of the blue, what looked like the floor manager came up to us and told us to "please keep your baby quiet, we should respect the other guests" and walked off. Instead of trying to offer assistance like closing our bill out faster, she basically told us to leave by reading between the lines. Sure my child was crying, but I was also already standing and picking up my jacket to take him out, telling us to respect other guests like we are doing it on purpose is not very professional, nor understanding to families. I suspect this manager lacks empathy in general and is probably not a happy person. This small but snarky / non-constructive unnecessary action has left a sour taste in our experience at Houston's. We won't be coming back and I would not recommend for anyone going with children. They don't even have high chairs here. Our family loves Houston's, we've gone here for years both in Irvine, CA and in Scottsdale, AZ. French dip sandwich, artichoke dip, salmon appetizer, fresh artichoke, roasted chicken, veggie plate, sushi rolls, sashimi salad, and dings chicken sandwich are some of our go to dishes. When my son was little he got the grilled cheese every time and has now switched to the cheese burger. The cocktails are awesome and the hot fudge sundae is so, so good! The sundae has the best candied nuts and the most delicious chocolate sauce that you get to pour on yourself. The service is always outstanding, the only con is that the wait can be really long so we don't go anymore unless we have a reservation or go at a really off time. The ribs are literally fall-off-the-bone tender. fries are a thinly sliced salty goodness. the sushi platters are small and meh. wasn't memorable enough for me to remember what it was like. eat sushi at a sushi place, eat other stuff at houstons. the thai steak salad can use some work. my jaw was tired from all the chewing bc the steak is cut up in huge chunks and was overcooked. not to mention i have to chew the lettuce, the cabbage, the peanuts, oh my! ugh, so much chewing, complain complain complain. the dressing looks peanuty but it has a spicy kick. that was good! service has always been great. whenever i go to houstons it's usually past 930pm (meaning, all other restaurants in irvine have shut down) and i've been left famished, cranky, and ready to eat a cow--literally. and thus i havent really tried anything else on the menu worth writing about except for what's above and....i'm going to repeat it again, OMG THEIR HAWAIIAN RIB EYE STEAK. and yet their smiley faces and chipper "how can i help you!" attitude bring me back to place. i'm going there tomorrow. maybe see you there. i'll be the one eating the steak. actually, maybe i'll try something new...but don't count on it. read more

I came here with my boyfriend for our anniversary, and overall: Customer Service: Even though we were seated 10 minutes after our scheduled reservation time, the waiter was very friendly, nice, and professional. All of them were attentive to our needs and made sure we felt comfortable as it was our first time dining there. Food: I'm not sure as to what the exact names of the food we ordered, but I ordered the ribs and my boyfriend ordered the steak. The ribs, which had "fall of the bone" somewhere in the name, literally had the meat falling off the bone. It also came with fries and coleslaw. I have a huge capacity to eat, and I ate everything off my plate, but I still wasn't very full. Although I'm sure that complaint doesn't usually apply. I came here with my classmates on an operation management project because the restaurant has an interesting model:) you don't have your own server for the table but instead a team will work together to accommodate your party. Leads to shorter service time but higher quality, more turnout per hour, etc... Anyways. I really liked my friend's kale salad. And I don't even really like kale. We shared the fries among the five of us. I had their ahi tuna salad which I thought was worth the price. Sushi (nigiri) apparently is not good. Warning - walk here if u can. First of all, the service is amazing. We always have incredibly attentive and friendly service there. The food is perfection. Just absolutely delicious. I'm addicted to the seared ahi, smoked salmon, spinach dip, grilled artichokes, and every dessert. My sister gets the Hawaiian ribeye every time. The ambience is absolutely beautiful and makes for a very special occasion feel. The music harkens you back to another era. From the front table with Elaine being the sweetest hostess ever, to her son, Will, an always-smiling face of a waiter, to the rest of the staff, especially the kitchen, this place can do no wrong. You feel welcomed here. There's a consistency that's comforting. That's for both the food and service. The decor is simple yet sophisticated. So I came here tonight with my family before my sister's surgery tomorrow and it was her first time here. I am usually a fan of this place, love the rainbow roll and kale salad. Tonight, I was a bit disappointed. First off, we made a reservation for 7:30 and didn't get seated until 8. The manager did come out and offer us an appetizer while we waited, so that was nice and thoughtful. When we finally sat down and ordered, they messed up three of the five orders and then the server tried to explain that is what we ordered--it was not. The manager came over again and accommodated us and we ordered two new entrees. In the end everything was corrected and the apple walnut cobbler was delicious, but the service was a bit off tonight. If my big toes counted as thumbs, I'd give this place four thumbs up! ;) It's a go-to for me since I can walk there, but also because they make a perfect martini, and the food is always fantastic. The menu isn't huge but it's packed with yum. What I love: rosemary focaccia bread with olives, veggie burger, seared salmon entree, and did I mention the martini?!? They have added outdoor seating as well, which is great :) I wouldn't order any of the sushi, just because the prices aren't good and the rolls aren't large compared to other places in OC. NOT SO PERFECT DATE NIGHT! I gave this place 5 stars last time because of our awesome experience, but they fell a bit short this time. We came on a Tuesday without a reservation. Surprised how busy it was and we had to wait 30 minutes. No biggie. A gentleman walked us to our table and also gave us our drinks. The actual server took a lil while to come. No biggie. We ordered sushi rolls for appetizer and it took forever to come. We were seated for 35 mins and still no food. I saw our server attending to other tables but us, so I got her attention. She checked on the order and came back with 1 plate sushi and she said, "oh sorry, they are making the other order right now". Few minutes later the head chef came to our table with the other sushi and apologized. She said "I am sorry, we messed up your order and didn't want to give you something I am not proud of". I expressed my disappointment for the long wait. She apologized again and comped our appetizers, which was nice. But then a few minutes later our main entrees came O_0. As far as the food goes, well it was excellent! We got the AVOCADO ROLLS and SHRIMP and COCONUT SHRIMP ROLL and oh boy they were so fresh and delicious. My BBQ PORK RIBS were super tender, fall off the bone and had a nice charred flavor to it. I almost finished the whole rack. I had to have the KALE SALAD again because I was dreaming about it lol. We will still come back for another date night and I still recommend this restaurant. TIP: Make a reservation on week nights. read more

Very disappointed with my experience here. Went without a reservation so I expected a little wait. Once we were seated at our table, we waited well over 15 minutes without any acknowledgement. Finally the bartender made contact with the manager who came over and said someone would be with us shortly. He also mentioned that the waits are longer if you don't have a reservation. When the waitress came over, she took our drink order and when she came back with the drinks, we asked for a straw and waited another 10 minutes before we got up and left. Everything felt forced. I get COVID delays ect but this is unacceptable - we go regularly to another one of your affiliated places and never get this horrible service. read more

The applewood smoked ribs with the best fresh french fries, only place I eat ribs. If you're lucky enough to come when they have grilled artichokes with their fresh garlic aioli, no place will compare. The best quality French dip you will ever have. Not happy with management and reservation desk! we made a reservation for 8:15 there and when we got there they told us they can't find our reservation and wanted us to wait 2 hours! lady manager who suppose to be service oriented didn't even allow us to use the Bar while we are waiting!! Asian lady who I guess was the manager was very unprofessional acting it's funny that she can't find our reservation and we have to wait two hours! Not worth the money! while we waited for few minutes we heard people complaining about food, service and charges in their tickets! Saturday we had dinner at Houston's and I was very disappointed in the French dip I ordered. I've ordered most items on the menu but this has been my favorite for a long time. Unfortunately, this time the sandwich didn't rate as high as in the past. A couple of years ago I found a small bone in my sandwich which, luckily, I didn't swallow. This time I don't think it was a bone but it was something harder, a piece of gristle possibly. Needless, the desire for the French dip has vanished. I'm very particular about meat, always have been. can't tolerate fat or gristle and I know they order from the best meat company. So sad. read more

When I travel to OC for work, I always look forward to dinner at Houston's. With C19 issues, was not sure how that would work, but since my business is essential, looked it up and ordered take out. Not a detail of their typical service was overlooked. They have a minimized menu, but the lady who took my order was great at offering different options of what I was used to was not on the current menu. When I arrived, they have a drive thru set up, or you can go in, which I chose to do. Plenty of hand sanitizer, social distancing and we'll thought out planning as you would expect. In and out... When I got to my hotel and unpacked dinner, the most perfect, delicious brownie you can imagine was included in my bag...just a little surprise...that made me smile. A true testament to hospitality professionals that have thought through what needs to be done to create the best dining experience possible, even in this crazy pandemic. Bravo! read more
