The food was good and service was great. This is a lovely restaurant. Now I'll suggest you read Houston's website that details their "rules" to be allowed to dine there. Not only are there attire restrictions, which are reasonable, no hats, no tank tops, no flip flops, but no cell phones, babies and children ok but if they act up, must be taken outside, no strollers allowed, no booster seats or high chairs provided, ok I get the screaming kid thing but here's the grabber: parties of 2 encouraged, maybe they'll seat parties of 3 or 4 but no guarantee even with reservations and if your party is larger good freaking luck. Last, 2 hours maximum or they will ask you to leave if you stay longer. At $29 for a sandwich one would assume one would be able to eat at one's leisure. And they have cards printed that they have you if you don't adhere to the rules. I have never seen a restaurant publish diners' rules beyond perhaps "business attire". I felt like I was in catechism with Sister Mary Margaret and even she was a bit more flexible. ALL of this said, how dare Houston's presume to administer rules and regulations on their clientele. It's almost humorous if it wasn't so off putting. So yeh the food was good not great the wait staff superlative but I can go to Flemings or Ruth's Chris and not look over my shoulder for the etiquette patrol to drag me out. read more

Last weekend, my family of 7 wanted to have a final dinner together. My son, his wife and grandson were moving to Japan. They were unable to seat us together as the maximum capacity was 4-5. The staff was extremely courteous and helpful in getting us seated across from each other. On top of that, the service was excellent. Houston's is known within my circle of friends for their PRIME RIB French Dip Sandwich, which we used to get frequently when it was price under $18 years ago, and with inflation and popularity has creeped up to the $25 range in 2022. It's a premiere sandwich 'tho. Not lame cold cuts, it's carved tender high quality prime rib roasted beef, cooked to perfection... you can get it medium rate, unlike many other places who tout a "prime rib" or "french dip" sandwich but just use lame cold cuts or old meat that's overcooked. You get what you pay for here and it's worthy of the price tag. It's probably within my "Top 5 French Dip" spots to go to. The place was busy for lunch, so we opted for the bar seating food service which was casual fine. Still a wait, but I think the only things I read about Houston's in terms of customer complain comments are related to waiting, so at least the service and food is on par with being a great place to eat as I also testify here. read more

Came for an early Mother's Day celebration. Houston is definitely the crème de la crème of steakhouses. The ambiance was luxurious yet intimate with soft lighting and candles. We were seated and served very quickly, and the food came out promptly as well. We started with smoked salmon and spinach artichoke dip -- both great appetizers. The salmon was smoked to perfection, with a subtle smokey flavor that complimented the creaminess of the dip. The spinach and artichoke perfectly balanced the richness of the cheese. They were served with chips and toast, which the servers refilled for us graciously. For the main course, we ordered the Hawaiian ribeye. My main qualm with most steakhouses is that the steaks are often bland or dry, but this marinated steak was neither. It was tender, juicy, and the pineapple soy ginger marinade was very flavorful. Impeccable service yesterday for a 1pm lunch. I was impressed to hear when the hostess greeted us, sat us, and immediately ask if she could get our drinks started for us! Never have I been asked so quickly before. Immediately afterwards Zach introduced himself as our waiter and took our order. Food came out in a good amount of time and it was very good. Artichoke appetizer was drizzled in oil with salt and pepper-great! Fork and knife ribs were on point! The Hawaiian rib eye was surprisingly different but very good, not too sweet. Roasted chicken was good but would have preferred a crunchy outer skin as opposed to a wet skin. Cheese bread was a nice addition to the ribs and steak. Overall it was a great experience. One thing to mention, it's very dark inside! I was kinda thrown off due to the hot beaming sun and then to the dark side. Be warned. Lastly, the parking lot has some large beautiful trees, but threw a lot of white "sprinkles" onto the car that stayed stuck on the hood and windshield all the way home. If you haven't been to Houston's, you're missing out. I enjoyed this location, the service is impeccable and the food is very enjoyable. Their menu is straight and to the point. Not an overwhelming amount of options but there is enough quality dishes to choose from. Today, I ordered the barbecue pork ribs and double order of french fries. The ribs were fall off the bone tender and tasted great. I usually don't enjoy fries from restaurants like Houston's but they were cooked to my liking and the waiter suggested a very flavorful seasoning for them that was a perfect pair for those fries. My meal was made complete by the key lime pie. It was light and not too rich. I loved it. Highly recommend. read more

Thursday was my first time dining at Houston's. I'm not a "Steakhouse" kinda guy. My regular haunts are Detention DTSA, Haven Craft Kitchen, O Sea.... So, my friend said she'd buy me lunch to help her out with some errands and Houston's is near her place. My friend warned me that it gets packed at lunch... and she was right. It was pure luck that I got a good parking space immediately and walked right into the restaurant and scored two seats at the bar, otherwise the place was full. I'll state my one and only negative comment here: It's way too dark inside the restaurant. What is this, 1975? Turn the lights up! I didn't note the windows situation, but if there are windows, let some light in! It felt a bit "stuffy"... But here's the good stuff. The bar was great. The bartender was friendly and made a great Black Manhattan. The menu was nice. I ordered the Nigiri plate. Yes, I had Sushi...! I asked the bar-back what she thought of the sushi and she said she has it every time she works. And I have to say: the nigiri plate was great. Sushi is all about product and this fish was fantastic, fresh and well prepared. My friend had a seared ahi tuna which I also had a taste of and it was also excellent. For me the ambiance of the restaurant is just not my preferred vibe, but I'll definitely come back to sit at the bar with a cocktail and enjoy some more of their seafood. read more

We ended up stuck in the terrible seat she declined with our previous table clearly crossed off (I had overheard conversation as I sat waiting for our reserved table). The server also lied saying the larger tables were taken by trios. As they opened up we found they weren't, couples sat in them. Our experience was degraded as a result of the table change. Now, I know this is a #firstworldproblem. I still left 20% tip because lord knows the people this server crew have to deal with. But the nice people should not get screwed over because of the Karen's and I'd rather splurge at a Ruth Chris (where I ate at the night before) instead of the lackluster service now all too common at Hillstone joints. For a place that's known for their steak, I actually prefer their sushi and rolls. They have a macadamia roll that's unit and definitely not an item you can find at most sushi bars. You are not allowed to wear and sports caps/hats as part of dress code. There is outdoor, inside and bar seating available at this time. If you come before 11:45 during the week, you can beat the lunch rush hour. Service was good for the most part. If I'm not eating sushi, I will typically also gravitate towards the French dip sandwich. read more

My family and i have been religiously eating at this place since i was 11. Although this is a steakhouse their sushi is surprisingly good! I always order the house salad with buttermilk dressing and extra bacon+the french dip sandwich. I love everything here and i love the lighting. I hate big overhead lighting. The last time I was at Houston's was about 11 years ago when I first met my husband's parents for the first time. We haven't had a chance to come back until yesterday when we celebrated Valentine's Day. The parking was full and the restaurant was crowded but the hostesses were organized and seated us in a timely manner. Thank goodness we booked a reservation or else the walk-in wait would have been long. Great ambience, the restaurant was dim with a candle lit at our booth, somewhat loud from all the people there, waiters came by often to refill it water glass. Our waiter was knowledgeable with the menu and answered our questions. Overall great customer service. My go-to was the Hawaiian rib eye and the hot fudge sundae. I've been looking forward to it for weeks leading up to our date. I will tell you that Houston's did not disappoint! My medium rare rib eye was cooked to perfection. Such a tender medium rare cut of meat and flavorful from their Hawaiian marinade. Their hot fudge ice cream sundae was as good as I remembered. The ice cream was solid, made with vanilla bean and they used high quality chocolate for their fudge. The combination is like no other. My husband and I also ordered the Osaka style sushi, chili, and ahi tuna, and he got the key lime pie for dessert, which were all delicious as well. I have always loved this Houston's - they have the BEST veggie burgers ever made. I was first introduced to it by one of my meat eating friends who enjoyed their signature veg burger as well. Since moving from Southern Cal to Sacramento I was sad that I was no longer able to eat here - the closest one is in San Francisco (now called Hillstone, b/c that is the name of the restaurant group that owns Houston's but still has the veg burger). The veggie burger is made from whole foods - not fake processed meats. I think the beets is what makes it so juicy though. It's also how its prepared on the bun with the toppings (don't forget to add avocado). But even if you don't go for the burger there are so many other options on the menu including amazing salads, the grilled artichoke, a spinach artichoke dip and so many different entrees to choose from including various kinds of fish, rotisserie chicken, a pork chop, ribs and steaks. The veggie sides are always incredible too. There is truly something for everyone. No matter the location the vibe is chill and an open kitchen so you can watch the action. At this particular location we had the most amazing service including hot towels to wipe our hands before our meal. We went for lunch on a Wednesday. The parking can be difficult at its peak hours! Be aware of that. There are a lot of fancy cars in the parking lot too, haha! Tbh, walking into this establishment felt very nostalgic like walking into Hollister back in the day, lol! Basically, it was very dark and kind of hard to see. Best things on the menu: Hawaiian Ribeye Traditional salad - the dressing is in house and is perfection. They make their own croutons which makes a world of a difference and it has bacon. We came here yesterday evening around 4pm and upon arrival they had said the wait for 4 people would be about 30-45 minutes. Okay, no problem. We gave them our name and number and they said they would text us when our table was ready. So! We walked around the plaza to kill time. About 40 mins after, we went to check and they said it would be about another 15-20 minutes. Close to 20 minutes later we just left. We saw a lot of the servers leaving through the back and we were really confused by this. They seemed to be having some kind of meeting outside of the restaurant before taking care of the customers that were overdue to be seated. We hadn't eaten all day and by this point we were pretty hangry so we just took our business and gave it elsewhere. I've been here a couple times in the past but it has never been this bad. Another 30 mins passed before we were noticed via text that our table was being prepared. No stars for this past visit, but since the lowest I can give is 1 star, then one will have to do. read more
