We loved loved the ambiance decor and enthusiastic waitress. The reviews were all SO good that we rushed over with excitement. Our picks were the turkey pot pie and open faced meatloaf with requested beef gravy. The pot pie came out huge! A gorgeous vision of a large rectangular giant puff pastry pipping hot. Unfortunately it was mostly a cream based filling with some seasoning and very little turkey... mostly puff pastry sadly. The meat loaf was beautiful, a nice generous portion on a large thick slice of hard Texas Toast. I think mashed potatoes would be more perfect with this dish and my requested portion of beef gravy should be added to this dish. Seasoning was good, not wonderful, dish could have been hotter. I love to cook and use many different spices. Both these dishes had identical seasoning. I ordered a blueberry muffin to go. No butter in it. We will come back one more time - - come to Bascomb Palmer Eye Clinic from Sarasota. The chef salad looked gorgeous next to us! Hamburgers have rave reviews and breakfast. The restaurant business today is murder for owners, hard to find/keep good chefs, staff, so$$$$. Howley's is almost there, just more attention to flavor, seasoning. read more

Wow, I have gone by Howley's for over 30 years, but stopped by today with a friend for a late lunch. It was so worth the stop, the food and service was outstanding. I had an IPA from Stuart which was wonderful and seriously the best crab cake around, my friend had the thanksgiving dinner which looked amazing and she said it was delicious. I absolutely loved this very artistically decorated diner for lunch today. I arrived a little past the lunch hour, and yet they were very busy. I was seated promptly and given a menu with so many great options. The lovely server recommended the Chef Salad with the housemade Blue Cheese dressing and the Ranch dressing. This was probably the best chef salad I had ever had. The tomatoes were very fresh along with the cucumber slices and hard boiled egg. The best was the fresh cooked meats and Swiss cheese. It was so simple yet so deliciously healthy with the spinach leaves and other mixed greens. I took home some of my leftover salad for lunch the next day. It was a generous portion which equaled it reasonable price. My friend had the open face meatloaf on a slice of toast with fries. The gravy poured on top dripped down onto the plate, which was perfect for soaking it up with the Fries. Howley's has become a go-to for us when traveling back from central Florida back to Fort Lauderdale, when we're wanting to hit somewhere out of town for a change. The ambience and servers all give off more alternative vibes (and thus way more comfortable) than what I usually experience in the area, and cheap PBRs are always welcome. Dogs are welcome outside, which is always a relief as we are often traveling with our pup. The artichoke dip has become a must, we were recommended it on our first visit and it gets ordered every time now. It's definitely filling, even when splitting between the two of us, which means a good chunk of my entree usually comes home with me. read more

The reviews were great but unfortunately our experience wasn't. We sat next to the loudest, most obnoxious table who were, proudly, 6 drinks in, and had zero consideration for anyone else. The inside was really cold so we'd asked to sit outside. The food was sub par but I guess it is a diner. We just assumed with great reviews, it would have been a little better than it was. This diner style restaurant has been around forever... and is known for it's late night eats and comfort food. My husband was craving meatloaf or pot pie or the like and this restaurant popped up on Yelp as having both. Located on the east side of federal highway, they were a bit busy when we got there for dinner on a Friday night. They have a little golfing green practice hole area right outside the front door. And a container with some golf clubs. Too cute. Their inside seating is either the counter, a booth or a table; and they even had an outside patio if you wish to "dine" al fresco. Come casual as this is a down home kinda place. The menu is large with lots of breakfast items for all day plus sandwiches, salads, and dinners. They have a daily soup of the day, vegetable of the day, and "tv dinner" entree of the day. I just decided to get a hot dog and fries. The all beef dog was larger than expected and was prepared well done, as requested. Even the fries also came crispy, as requested. The only downside on the plate was a sad looking pickle spear past it's prime. No worries, I didn't even finish half my meal. I was saving room for dessert. My husband had their turkey pot pie. Gorgeously presented with a large rectangle of puff pastry. This was light and airy to eat and sat on top of a mixture of large chunks of white meat turkey, celery, carrots, and peas in a cream base. It was very very good. For dessert, we shared their white coconut cake. It hit the spot. We had a few bites and took that home along with half of each of our meals. We had good and friendly service, although she was quite busy -- so this was not fast food dining. The worst food experience ever! The French dip was so chewy and didn't come with cheese, dry dry dry! The champagne was corked but we were told that's the way it normally tastes. It's a $17 bottle at total wine but they charged $56! Overall just a huge disappointment for a $200 Lunch! read more

This is a local, treasure. My guess is Howley's is a landmark set in the art district of WPB. It's a 50's style diner that has flare, ambiance, and style. This is a classic american greasy spoon which means the food is awesome. You can have breakfast/brunch/lunch. I went all out with an American breakfast and added some biscuits and gravy. Food is well priced and portions are appropriate. They also have the added benefit of a nice selection of liquors for drinks such as bloody Mary's, and others. They also offer different microbrews. Alcohol prices were higher than expected in my opinion. I don't think our server liked us too much after I asked if there was any drink specials. Oh well, overall....Howleys is a piece of history that I'm glad has found it's way through the decades. A great dining experience and interesting art to look at and converse over or buy if you are inclined. Definitely would like return for the comfort food! read more

After reading all of the positive reviews of Howley's, I thought why not give it a try. I had plenty of time before my flight and I was really craving chicken noodle matzoh ball soup. All the reviews that said the service was slow were spot on. My server was not only slow, she was rude and argumentative. I ordered a Coke and she brought me iced coffee. When I finally got her attention, she argued with me saying that it was Coke, not coffee. I can honestly tell the difference between the two. She took the coffee away and did bring me a Coke. However she clearly wasn't happy with me for challenging her. She slammed the glass on the table making the soda splash all over. A short time later, she returned to let me know that the kitchen ran out of matzoh balls. Really? The soup was OK. The shrimp salad that I ordered was also OK - nothing special. After spending over $30 on a lunch that was OK and having a server that was rude, I feel like I was ripped off. I can't see me going back to Howley's any time soon. read more

Ugh... I really hate to not love this place. It has such great potential, but fell flat. The host was amazing & the bright spot in the visit. Our waitress seemed put out to wait on us. She took our order & then we never saw her again until she brought the check. We needed stuff in between, but we had to ask the host for help. We got 2 breakfast orders, 1 burger, & 1 sandwich. Simple stuff that took a long time to come. The food was okay. The breakfast orders were fine, but the others were just bad. The sandwich was said to have no flavor. Howley's continues to be a leader in the community and helping others. During my quick visit I met Al the Dog who has special access rights----he was a joy to brighten any morning. It was a steak and eggs for breakfast and the staff-recommended fried chicken dinner before I flew away. I honestly could not finish the dinner and had to take a doggie-bag (Al had left). If you have never ventured in, they are open late again. If you can not decide, ask the staff. I highly recommend their Thanksgiving Day meal, served everyday. And now, the fried chicken. Most were happy with their food. Very good brisket sandwich, sweet potato fries and regular fries were both delicious. Great crab cakes and turkey Ruben but the turkey club sandwich tasted like it had come straight from the refrigerator. The toast was cold and soggy and the bacon was not even a bit warm. There's quite a bit of seating inside and in their outside patio. Decor here is very dated. It just didn't feel clean to me, especially as you walk down to the restrooms; it feels like they just don't care about how everything looks. Our server wore one of those Gaiters, which to me always looks like the person is about to hold up the bank in her wild Wild West. He was pleasant and took our order right away. We went with coffee (no stevia available), the NY strip steak and eggs, and a bacon/mushroom/cheddar omelette. The coffee tasted far too weak, not the greatest. Havent been here in years and honestly I don't know what took us so long to come back. The food is AMAZING!!! Decided to come for breakfast, there was a bit of a wait but can totally understand why. There are two small putting greens out front and plenty of tables/chairs to sit at while you wait. Staff is super friendly and attentive and the restaurant has such a cool vibe. The menu has quite a few options, I had the Howley's Crab Hash, delightful!! My husband had the Southern Benedict, it too was amazing, that pulled pork was perfection!
