This store is awesome. I'm happy to be supporting a small business to get my dog food from.

This store has a solid loyal following and it's apparent that it's well-deserved. Don is always quick to welcome regulars by name, and goes out of his way to learn the names of those who are just stopping by (like myself). I don't even have a dog here in San Diego, but I stop by occasionally to pick up treats for my sister's dog in LA and my dogs back in Hawaii. The array of dog treats, toys, accessories, dishes and beds are impressive for a small, independent shop. I particularly like that they only sell the highest quality dog foods here. Their products may be pricey, but the quality of these goods speak for itself. Besides, isn't your dog worth it? For the record, Don has never preached to me, or rattled off any so-called "spiel." I'm not sure what the circumstances were with that other customer, but I've always been treated with respect and deference while at Howlistic. I appreciate that Don is willing to give his insight on different foods and treats - he once recommended a book to me ("Merle's Door") and it was fantastic. Overall, I'd say this is a great store. The service is great and the product offering is extensive. I will confess though - Sadie, Don's sweetheart of a black lab, is one of the major draws here. I found Howlistic when searching for shops that carried raw food diets for cats. I was expecting to walk in and just awkwardly stand around Googling the brands since I didn't have a clue about how to choose the right type of raw food diet. But instead, the staff talked to me about what I was looking for and made recommendations on everything from dehydrated (just add water) raw food, frozen options, dry food and even treats. It was such a relief! She recommended I try the dehydrated raw food because it was so easy to prepare (just add warm water), and to try a few of the individual sized bags so I could see what flavors my kitten liked best. A month later, my kitten is well adjusted to the diet and it has been really easy. The store also carries a variety of LID (limited ingredient diet) brands, toys, beds, and more. Bonus points for having their own parking lot. Wins all around! read more

I'm such a huge fan of supporting local businesses - especially those that support USA made products. Howlistic is a fabulous doggy boutique with high-quality food, treats and toys. I know going into Howlistic that I'm getting the best products for my dog. Yes, it may be a bit more on the pricey side but there are lots of options for dog owners to choose from - even some high end kibble if the raw food diet is too pricey or not something you want to start. My old english bulldogge has been on the raw food diet recommended by Don for a few months now and she looks stunning and gets compliments on her looks and coat on a daily basis. Don ensures only the best products are placed on his store shelves so dog owners can rest assured that what is placed before them is safe and healthy for their pets. (Of course I recommend doing your own independent research as well and consult a Vet anytime you're thinking of switching your dogs diet) This is a true gem for all San Diego dog lovers who want the best for their pets. I work near here, and wandered in one day after work. The staff was so helpful! They showed me different options for food for my VERY picky eater of a dog. She loves it and you can tell that it's got a lot of good stuff in it for her because her coat is shinier, she's more perky! Plus she wants to eat, I never thought I'd be happy that my dog was begging me to have her dinner. I went back another day and bright my pup in to try out the baths, she hates baths, but with the therapy shampoo and the way the baths are, it was a lot easier to bathe her than at home. Plus she's less itchy and super soft! I love it here, plus it's super convenient for me! read more

I have had the best luck with this place. I have a boxer mix that I rescued and she has had major digestive issues and food intolerance's. I have read books on the raw diet and dog nutrition so I already knew some about it but Don just backed all that up and knew even more and helped me and my little sickly puppy get healthy. I also love that they sell products only from USA or Canada which is insanely important, look at all the poor dogs that got sick and some even died last year in that China wheat gluten health food scare. Many places sell the food my dogs are happy with now but I feel better giving a well deserving local business with caring owners my money! read more

I have been here numerous times to purchase dog food and treats. The owner is very knowledgeable and friendly. They provide great personalized service and I have recommended the business to several other pet-owners. I received some information about Solid Gold food from a employee at Tag Pet Boutique and I came into Howlistic and mentioned my concern. He explained to me the entire situation regarding the ingredients and he knew ALOT about the brand and the nutrition of the food. I have a doggie with digestive issues and Howlistic has given me so many options in helping my lil guy and his tummy. Nutrition is super important to us and what we feed our fur baby. He always has answers and different solutions. Great line of high-end, HEALTHY products for our dogs & cats. I have never known Don to come across in the way that Derek describes. He is not trying to get you to buy his food b/c it's more expensive. He wants to educate pet owners so we have healthier dogs with fewer health problems. As an FYI to Derek, vets don't get a lot of class time in the area of nutrition. It's up to us to do research on why dogs aren't meant to eat corn, soy and wheat, as we don't often hear that from our vets. As with people, the health of our dogs starts with what they eat. Thankfully, the folks at Howlistic know that. read more

This place is a great resource for a diverse variety of healthy dog food. When I first stopped in about two years ago, I was feeding my dogs dry food from petco and was concerned that the Howlistic people would push a pricey new diet for my dogs. That was not my experience at all. Don was super-nice and patient about explaining the various options and, to my surprise, recommended a dry food that cost about the same as what I bought from petco. He was even generous about giving me samples to make sure the new food agreed with my dogs' tummies. Since switching my dogs to various dry food brands at Howlistic, they've had a lot more energy, their coats look shinier, and they get less tartar build-up. I also like that the products are very clear about what is in them and where the ingredients come from (everything that I've seen is US or Canada), which makes you feel a lot better after all the China recall fiasco. And my dogs love the store, every time we stop by Don is very generous about giving treats and belly rubs to the dogs. read more

Fantastic pet store. Being a new dog owner I wanted to make sure to get the best for my new pet and this is it! They have a wonderful selection of raw food in different sizes recipes and styles. I also love the organic treats and the way the owner supports other local businesses. Just moved here from Austin and I was looking for a healthy pet store. Walked in and browsed for 20 minutes without anyone greeting me nor offering help. The lady who works there is pretty standoffish. The other staff I've encountered has been way nicer. Also, they should post their hours for the dog wash as it closes an hour before the store closes, which seems like a waste of business on their end. The lady did give my dog a treat, so maybe she's just better with dogs, but overall not the most welcoming. They should learn a thing or two from Healthy Pets in Austin!!! read more

I came to Howlistic on my way home from grabbing some take-out with my boyfriend and pup. Before coming, I took a quick glance at their website and was pretty impressed with the selection of natural products that they listed online. I came here to check out OC Raw as I had been doing reading on the benefits of feeding raw versus kibble. Upon entering, we were greeted by a woman who led us to the raw food area when I asked her if they had OC Raw. She was very informative and suggested a few other brands that they carried. Apparently, the owner (Don I believe) feeds his dogs Northwest Naturals and really stands behind the product. It seems that the owners really do their research to see where the companies manufacture the food, how it's processed, and if there have been any recalls. I paid about $8 for the 2 lbs. "chub" beef roll of Northwest Naturals. They carry a wide selection of natural dog foods. The dry food brands that I saw included Orijen, Acana, Great Life, Canidae, and Solid Gold. The raw foods that I saw were Primal, OC Raw, Northwest Naturals, and Stella and Chewy's. They also carry a variety of toys, chews, and other pet gear like collars and leashes. Some of the treats that I saw were Zuke's, Ziwi Peak and Sojos. One of the specific reasons that I came here was for the antler chews that they carry. The prices range from about $9 for an ~8 inch antler and up to $42 for a huge one. All in all, I had a very pleasant experience at Howlistic and will most likely be coming back. read more

Howlistic is a great pet store in Hillcrest. Don the owner is extremely knowledgeable and knows all about food and what you should be feeding your pooch. What I love about the store is that Don stocks the store full of items that come from little mom and pop run companies from across the US and Canada. Anyone who has ever had a business can appreciate small businesses supporting each other. Don helped me pick out the correct food for my dog Macaroon and he has done well on it. Any chance I get, I refer people to him because I appreciate the great effort and time he puts into each customer. He actually cares that your dog or cat is receiving proper nutrition. Howlistic has an excellent selection of natural pet foods, treats, and supplies. They only sell products that they can stand behind and really know their stuff. My pets and I have never been disappointed. Don is knowledgeable, friendly, and patient when helping customers. I've also noticed that they never push any products or food on me, even when I'm asking about them specifically. I am lucky enough to live walking distance from Howlistic and when my dog sees me pick up my canvas bag and grab her leash she gets really excited and makes a bee-line straight for their store. It might help that she gets lavished with treats whenever she arrives there! What a great little boutique pet store! Brought our pups in to grab some treats for our ride out of town. They actually had a few brands that I've never seen before with is super cool. We are always looking for new dog treats that are healthy and safe for our two picky yorkies. The owner even let our dogs sample some which was super nice. Thank you so much! The employees are quite knowledgeable in dog food and have been so helpful as we have switched to a raw diet for our pups. I've know these guys for years and they supply high quality pet food. They also have big hearts and donate to local animal shelters. This is my favorite pet store! The staff are always so sweet to my pup. They have a great dog wash area that includes: a variety of great shampoos, towels, plastic apron, dog treats, and they even have warm dog face towels that they give you towards the end of the wash. They also have great product that I buy for washing pup at home. They have a dog wash card they stamp as well. I love that they let your dog try a variety of treats. They keep track of what you buy by asking for your name. This helps when I forget what treats or food I have bought in the past that my pup really liked. I love that they carry "Found My Animal" leashes and collars now. What a great company to support! read more

Awesome holistic dog food store! Have always loved coming here. Don, the owner, always so nice and gives healthy high quality treats to my dogs, and so knowledgeable about dog foods with great recommendations. Used the self-service dog wash the first time over the weekend and I am hooked! Super clean, well organized, and delicious smelling conditioning shampoos. I have been shopping here for over a year now, and I am very discerning about where I take my business. One of the owners, Don, helped me the very first time I came in, and always recognizes me. They take the time to explain things if you have questions, and always give me great suggestions. My older pup had tummy issues for about 4-5 months, and Don helped us work through them by trying out a probiotic, and working through a few different foods. She is good to go now! :) One time they were out of the size of harness I needed - I got a phone call the minute my order came in and they even held it behind the counter for quite a while because I'm so busy I couldn't pick it up for over a week! Great place to go to if you're looking for natural and healthy options for your fur kids. The staff is extremely friendly and very knowledgeable. We weren't in the store for more than 30 seconds before our pups were offered treats they devoured right away! They offer a points program which gets you some nice rewards which I felt was a nice way to make customers feel welcome and appreciated. This place and its staff are absolutely amazing. It is the best kept secret in town. We've only visited the Mission Hills location since it is up the street, but I understand they have a second location in La Mesa. I have learned so much about the right foods to feed our adult Maine Coon and 2 baby Boston Terriers--raw diets are the way to go and the pets just love it! I brought one of our Bostons in for puppy training (a 6 session class) when she was old enough and it was so much fun. As energetic as she is she certainly learned her commands well and quickly. Jen, the instructor, was great and quite helpful in always adjusting training for individual needs, unlike many other places that try to force the pet to do something they don't seem comfortable with. Every two weeks I come into Howlistic to buy something because they always have new stuff--be it toys or food or simply to get advice. Everyone really is knowledgable and helpful, but I usually seek out Jeri who also has a dog who shares a similarity with my youngest Boston - both are deaf. I haven't used the bath area for our pups yet but will do as soon as both are fully vaccinated. read more

Another update! This place just gets better all the time. Now with doggy bathing areas and they listen to the customers. They have diatomaceous earth now, hard to find in San Diego. Perfect for killing little bugs, fleas and such. Thanks for being so amazing Howlistic! How much do I love howlistic. Don is friendly, helpful--offering good advice only when asked. My puppy Oliver loves all the toys and bedding and supplements from Howlistic. We're going there now to try the food as our poor little pup has been under the weather ever since we picked him up from the Humane Society. Sadie, Don's lab, is certainly the picture of doggy health. Great Place to wash your dog This review is only for the dog washing facilities. I did not get anything else there. Though by just browsing their stock of items was very good and the sales people were eager to help. It was a hot day and my little guy was dying of some fleas he picked up in the park. i had gotten some flea shampoo and was going back home to wash in my tub. Then i remembered this place had a tiny sign "Self Service dog wash for $10". I went over to see. For $10 Howlistic provides the tub, towel and shampoo. They also have splash aprons and some scrubber pads/ The washing section is in the other half of the store. Well lit and plainly visible from he front of the store. There are 3 washing sections. The tubs are raised so that you can comfortably stand while washing your dog. Fatigue mats were a nice touch. Different height tubs for dogs of various sizes. The attendant provides an overview of how to use the hose and provided a face towel for my dog. Good pressure on the water. The wash was very easy. i did 2 washing's to make sure i killed as many fleas as possible. Total time was about 20 minutes. i didn't use their hair drier (extra fee) because it was such a hot day. Very convienent, great facility and staff was soooo nice. I will be back. Great job guys read more
