Our waters were quickly refilled and they did not overcrowd us- which is always a plus. The food was on the greasy side and over priced. The dumplings were ok - but 6 skinny dumplings for almost $15 is definitely not worth it. The cashew shrimp was way too sweet for our liking and did not come with broccoli like other places we've been to. The pan fried noodle dish was not crispy and overly salty. This place is a gem! Second time I visit Atlanta, and I had to eat here again. Definitely will not disappoint! I was disappointed at the lunch special, having read the great reviews. I ordered the spicy basil beef lunch special. It had good snow peapods, as the menu described. But there were no straw mushrooms and it was not topped with crushed roasted peanuts, just some carrot curls that weren't on the menu. The beef was supposed to have been marinated in 7 spices but I tasted no evidence of that. Three tasty mouthfuls contained Thai basil leaves, but the rest were pretty tasteless. read more

First time in Atlanta ! Staying overnight at a nearby hotel and wanted to eat something we don't have at home, good Chinese food. I saw HSU's on the map near hotel. We got a little turned around trying to locate this place, if you are not from Atlanta there is a Peachtree St. and a Peachtree Center St. Anyway, the menu wasn't that big, which is cool. We ordered the House Lo Mein, with shrimp, beef and chicken and the Mongolian Beef, we requested it extra spicy. The Lo Mein was very good, large portion. I was a bit disappointed with the Mongolian Beef, tasty but it wasn't spicy at all. We were there at dinner time, about 5:30 pm, the place was empty except for us, so we were checked on quite a bit. In closing, we loved the restaurant and food and will definitely return when we come back to Atlanta. My friends and I dined at Hsu's for the first time (finally!) on a Sunday evening after completing an escape room nearby. We made reservations for 10 two months in advance and I was looking forward to trying this historic restaurant. Upon arrival, we were immediately greeted and led to our table where everything was set for us. The ambiance and table settings are pretty fancy for a Chinese restaurant and you can't help but admire the classy, albeit a bit dated, feel . Our group decided to order family style. We ordered some soups, dumplings and a variety of 7 entrees to share. With two young kids and eight adults in our group, it was the perfect amount of food - we had very little food leftover and everyone was pretty satisfied. We tried the following: - Shantung Dumplings: Steamed Pork Dumplings with Minced Vegetables Served with Ginger Soy Vinaigrette Dipping Sauce - Hot & Sour Soup: Shrimp and scallops - House Special Lo Mein: Shrimp, beef, and Chicken with Soft Egg Noodles - Combination Fried Rice: Shrimp, chicken, and beef. - Peking Duck: The house signature dish is presented in 3 courses: soup, crispy skin in Chinese crepe, and grilled duck meat in honey soy sauce. - General Tsu's Favorite Chicken - Avocado Shrimp - Large shrimp sautéed with fresh avocado and vegetables. - Spicy Basil Beef: Sliced tender beef marinated in 7 spices and wok-tossed with fresh basil leaves; topped with crushed roasted peanuts and served with snow peas and mushroom - Jajangmyeon (not on menu) Our meal started with the Peking duck experience. This was pretty cool and traditional in that a staff member carts the duck to you and prepares the course table-side. The gentleman was very nice and friendly and even joked with us as he prepped our food. He sliced the duck and wrapped our crepes with expect craftsmanship, using a variety of utensils and never touching our food once. I really marveled at the speed and precision of how well he was able to get this done! Instead of the normal three courses for the Peking duck experience, the server told us we would only have two because we had so many people and were ordering soups separately anyway - totally fine by us. Everyone loved the crispy skin in the Peking duck crepe and the other course, grilled and topped with honey soy sauce, was delicious as well. At $70 this is pretty steep, but it's pretty good and there's plenty of meat for two people. I enjoyed the hot and sour soup but the flavor was pretty standard. All the other dishes we ordered were average as well. There was nothing wrong with how any of the dishes tasted, but again nothing mind-blowing. I tried a bite of every single dish and surprisingly didn't crave seconds on any dish. The entree I was most excited about was the off-menu Jajangmyeon based on all the positive reviews but that also was a let down. As a Cantonese person, I am probably overly critical when it comes to Chinese food because I've eaten it all my life. Most of the table really enjoyed the meal and one friend even proclaimed the General Tsu's Favorite Chicken as the best he's ever had in his life. Overall, you're not getting mind-blowing food, or even great food for the price, and there are plenty of Chinese restaurants in Atlanta that will serve much better food minus the ambiance. We enjoyed excellent service throughout our entire meal - the servers were kind, friendly, and joked with us multiple times. We got the curry chicken ($17.95) and the honey walnut shrimp ($20.23), both items were just okay. Just tastes like any other Chinese restaurant. Which is why I deducted a point because for this amount and average tastes, it is way over priced. These dishes would normally cost around $14.00. Although, downtown restaurants are always a little more expensive but I don't think i would come again unless I'm really really craving for Chinese! Service was great, we came there around 4:00pm so that's usually a time where there's not many customers. I do like the Chinese decorations! A bit disappointed yesterday for lunch, I've been here a few times and I mostly would only come for lunch. I ordered the egg drop soup and the shantung black noodles. Both were delicious! Poblem is as soon as they brought my egg drop soup my friend noticed a piece of hair hanging from the side. The waitress apologized profusely, and brought me another bowl. Yesterday for lunch I decided to walk a couple blocks and stumbled upon Hsu's. I found myself in a dimly lit, yet ambient Chinese restaurant. I started with the spring rolls. They were delicious and the spicy mustard was one of the hottest yet best I've ever tasted. I love seafood, but I usually stay away from it in Atlanta. I am from the coast and am usually quite picky when it comes to my seafood. I made an exception after seeing a few people enjoying bowls of soup and decided it must be the Spicy Anna's. Spicy Anna's seafood noodle soup was one of the best things I have ever eaten. The broth was rich with flavor, despite not being very thick. The shrimp, scallops and chicken were delightful, and perfectly cooked. The aroma was ridiculous, and the spices were intense without overriding the flavors. This place is a must eat in my book if you're in Atlanta and staying nearby. They really do everything right and the prices are extremely reasonable. Multiple people greet you upon entry, they take your order super quickly (and even respect that you're on an impromptu business call), give you a free pickle appetizer, and bring out everything super fast and I mean FAST. I must have put my order in for a spicy shrimp basil and started eating my dumplings that when I finished eating the appetizer the entree came out. I was blown away. Everything was hot and delicious. I think they do a really really good job on the pork dumplings as well. What I think takes this place over the top is the homemade fortune cookie they bring with your check. Hsu's seems to be a famous Downtown Atlanta Chinese spot. When you come in, you can see all the celebrities who have dined here. I have no clue why Chinese restaurants have these photos on walls. You can see them at Golden Buddha, and so on. Anyways, I came in during Dragon*Con. Just like all other restaurants, this place was packed. It's a cramped restaurant, especially with 100's of nerds packed into the place. For D*Con, they had a special D*Con menu featuring Harry Potter themes. I thought that was cool. Their food menu seemed basic. It had your typical Chinese-American dishes. I asked if they had a Chinese menu, and they said no. Darn. I hoped they would have a secret Chinese menu, different from the one they have for the round eyes. We tried String Beans with Pork, Sea Scallop in Black Pepper Sauce, Wok Charred Beef Medallion, and steamed whole fish. For the fish, you can choose to get it steamed or fried. It's their fish of the day. For the day we went, it was the snapper. We got it steamed. It came nicely cooked with the ginger and scallion sauce. However, I thought the fish was bland. I wished they added more sauce to it. The Sea Scallops were good. It came with about 5 scallops and had a peppery flavor. I thought the Black Pepper Sauce was too strong. If you like peppers, maybe this dish will be good for you. The Beef Medallions were all right. The beef was tough, and I didn't really care for the sauce. The fried taro was a nice touch though. The green beans with pork was decent as well. I thought it had good flavor and the green beans were cooked well. They don't give you a big bowl of rice like some Chinese restaurants. They give you individual bowls. And you have to ask for more if you need more. That was inconvenient. Also, the second bowl of rice we got was under cooked. Or maybe they did it al-dente. The food was not a good value. The food here is expensive. They tasted okay. But I was left hungry. Both my stomach and wallet left empty. You might need 1-2 dishes per person depending on how many big eaters you have at the table. read more

Solid meal. We needed an affordable dinner for a large group, at a place that would take reservations and our order in advance on a Friday night, and Hsu's was a good option. They weren't too busy and even took us 30 minutes early when we were running ahead of schedule. RESERVATIONS: Made a week in advance for 7pm on a Friday for 34 people (we had the back area that was partly separated from the rest of the tables). We called around 5:45pm to change the reservation to 6:30pm and they were fine with that. THE SERVICE: Our big group came in waves; we were asked about drinks immediately. The food came out quickly once everyone was settled. Everything was done very efficiently. When my co-worker had ordered our dishes over the phone, the server had pushed a little for us to order more, but it was actually exactly the right amount of food. THE COST: $606.97 including tax/tip for 34 people. MUST-HAVES: I really liked the House Special Lo Mein as the noodles and beef were very soft, and my co-worker liked the Hong Kong Style (Crispy) Noodles! One of the best parts of the meal was the chocolate-covered fortune cookies at the end. Whenever I'm in ATL for work, I have to eat here. It's the best Korean/Chinese food outside of Ktown LA. Samoneem always accommodates us when we go. I always get the same thing, because I'm a creature of habit, but also because it's the best!
