I'm a big fan of hot and sour soup and Hsu's is probably the best I've ever tasted. They are about two blocks from where I work so I usually walk to them to avoid the delivery fees. There is a bike lane in front of the location and usually there are a couple of cars parked there to pick up orders. If you choose to dine in there is a parking deck next to the restaurant and they will validate parking for that deck. They are open for lunch from 11:30am to 2. They reopen at 5pm for dinner and close at 9. I've only had the seafood hot and sour soup. It has shrimp and scallops. The cost is just about $9. Consistently the soup has only two shrimp and about six scallops. It's soup so it's hard to tell when the seafood is added, but since I've never had more than two shrimp in the soup. While I don't expect it to be all seafood, the amount of shrimp is a little disappointing. The hot and sour soup is available without seafood for just about $4. Very nice staff and great service. They'd probably earn 5 stars if I'd eaten inside and tried anything but the soup. I'll definitely return. read more

I've been trying to eat here for years. Of the many times I've been in town they have been closed on each time. I finally got the try the recently and tried the exceptional looking and highly recommended Mongolian Beef. Sadly it was almost excellent but fell short in a very disappointing way. I like my Mongolian Beef slightly spicy and a touch of sweet Their beef is over sweet. It's as if they coat it in a sugar, granulated sugar. The egg rolls were ok as well. I've been trying to get to this place for a while now. It's not the most convenient location given the parking options. I got lunch, hot and sour soup & sesame chicken. The soup was good not great- seemed to have more of a Szechuan flair; chicken broth based with both pork and shrimp. Not the best that had in the Atlanta Metro, but still good. The sesame chicken was fantastic, reasonable smaller sized/light portion for lunch - crispy golden brown & a rich and flavorful sauce. Their pricing is quite high. Most places in the area include an entree, egg roll, chicken wing & soup for the same cost as Hsu's entree alone. We were disappointed with our dinner at Hsu's, an old-school Chinese restaurant located in downtown Atlanta. The food was overpriced for the taste/quality and portion sizes we received. This restaurant is part of Peachtree Center, a multi-block, multi-building office and retail complex. Hsu's is situated on the ground level of Peachtree Center's International Garage, a six-story parking deck. Conveniently, you can park for free in this deck for 2 hours at lunchtime and 4 hours at dinnertime with restaurant validation. Most restaurant tenants at Peachtree Center don't provide this, so it's certainly a nice perk of Hsu's. The restaurant has been around since 1989. It's a traditional American Chinese sit-down restaurant that is dated by today's standards. When you enter, they have a wall of photos with celebrity customers from over the years. The spread is impressive and includes celebs like Betty White, Paul Walker, Ben Affleck, Magic Johnson, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Spike Lee. Why all these famous people came here is beyond me. I feel like this is one of those restaurants you come to if you're visiting from out-of-town and don't want to travel far from your hotel, convention, or workplace. The owners of Hsu's also own Pacific Rim Bistro a couple blocks up the street. We came to eat here during Dragon Con. While we were in the restaurant, one of my con friends asked me where I was. I texted him Hsu's and he responded, "I'm sorry to hear that." He didn't think this place was very good either. Like most restaurants in the immediate area, Hsu's was packed during the convention. We arrived around 6:30pm on a Sunday with a party of 4 and were told the wait would be about 45 minutes. Our wait ended up being much shorter, only about 10 minutes, which was great. The atmosphere is classic, white tablecloth dining. The chairs are worn out and have no cushion to them. Aside from the owners/managers, the staff is dressed in all black. The dinner menu had apps priced in the $6-13 range with individual portion soups $5-6 and entrees about $15-30 each. They have a 3-course Peking duck entree for $70 and some entrees, like the seasonal Chinese vegetables and Chilean sea bass, are sold at market price. We ordered the whole fish of the day (they had both red snapper and grey sole; we got the snapper) and it cost $37.95. Here's what we got: * String Beans Szechwan Style with Ground Pork ($18.50) * Wok Charred Beef Medallion ($28.50) in black pepper corn sauce * Sea Scallop in Black Pepper Sauce ($29.50) - dry pack of diver's select large sea scallops with black pepper sauce * Whole Fish of the Day: Red Snapper ($37.95) - steamed with ginger and scallion sauce The food ranged from great to disappointing. Great - Sea Scallop in Black Pepper Sauce Good - String Beans Szechwan Style with Ground Pork OK - Wok Charred Beef Medallion Disappointing - Whole Fish of the Day: Red Snapper The sea scallops in black pepper sauce were delicious. There were only 6 to a plate though, so those scallops ended up costing about $5 each. The scallops were plump and meaty with both wonderful flavor and texture. The scallops were served with a side of chopped jumbo asparagus. I recommend this dish. The Sichuan-style string beans with ground pork was tasty. The string beans could have been a bit fresher and crispier, but they weren't bad. The best part about this dish was the ground pork. It was rich and flavorful. Oily, but that's what made it good. This dish is worth getting if you're looking for a vegetable to order. I wasn't a big fan of the beef medallions. There were 2 "TV dinner size" beef medallions on the plate served with a small side of what we think were super-thin-cut taro fries and chopped jumbo asparagus. We were asked how we'd like the beef cooked and we asked for medium rare. The beef came out at more of a medium. The meat was a little tough, but not terrible. I think they used the same dark, thick, black pepper sauce on the beef as they did the scallops, but it didn't work as well here. I was underwhelmed with both the flavor and consistency. The taro fries were a nice touch though. They were delightfully crispy. Where do I start with the snapper? The presentation was nice. Instead of the traditional Chinese way of serving the fish on its side, Hsu's served it on its belly with the meat on either side spread out. The fish was dry and flavorless. The entree did not have enough ginger, scallions, and sauce. The quality of the fish itself seemed average. I'm not sure if it was the cooking, the freshness of the fish, or both (probably both). We chose snapper over the sole because the server told us it has less bones. There are a lot of small bones to pick through regardless. With the whole fish at Hsu's, you also have the options of fried instead of steamed and served with sweet and sour sauce instead of ginger and scallion sauce. Service was fine. No issues. I decided to sit at the bar we had 4 total strangers sitting next to each other and by the entree we where all laughing and acting like friends the Bartender Kenny ... Was worth every penny spent here. I have never laughed so hard. Like I said the food was good but the humor was awesomr. The food here is always good and I have literally come her since I was seven with my mother. she would often take me to work and after I helped her , I would be rewarded with the delicious foods Hsus has to offer.Her favorite dish was the schezwan style string beans and I loved it as a kid as well due to its crunchy texture from the string beans mixed with juicy ground beef and the schezwan spices that gives the dish a great balance with a kick .My favorite dishes include the jjambbong( Spicy Anna's Seafood Noodle Soup) ,jjajamyun( black bean curd noodles) , mapo tofu , walnut shrimp ,spicy basil chicken and the hot and sour soup. It may sound like the whole menu but yes the food is that good and if my twenty two years of experience doesn't convince you then ask all the famous people that has stopped by like Keanu Reeves , Jeremy Lin and a bunch of other people that have a picture up on their wall. Stopped by for dinner on a Saturday and was able to get seated quickly. The restaurant can get crowded so it was a little noisy. The service was good and incredibly quick. We ordered and the food came out in about 10-15 minutes. If this is the South's idea of good Chinese then they've never had good Chinese. I honestly do not know what the meat was I was eating in my Spicy Basil Chicken. The steamed veggies dumplings appeared to have just eager chestnuts snd corn in them, no semblance of cabbage or green onion or any other veggie you might expect. As you walk in there is a wall of celebrities to the right and we quickly got seated. We were promptly served our drinks and afterwards the food came quickly. I ordered wonton soup as appetizer and scallops as main dish. Soup was very good but scallops were super rubbery, chewy and fatty. Definitely would never order again but maybe come back for a different dish. Fried rice was also good.
