Wanted to try Hu Dat because a friend of mine eats there every time she is in the area. We got seated on the Benchwarmer side. ‍ Walked over to the other side to see what we were missing. Not much really. Another bar. Decor was non-descript. And outside the windows just traffic going by. Although they had some cool plants by the sidewalk. There was plenty of empty tables for us to be seated on that side so don't know why they put us in the sports bar. Big TVs had nothing but a sports commentary showing two guys but no sound and after that, the resting screen was showing for a long time. Reggae music playing. I ordered cashew chicken and my husband got orange chicken. Everything on both plates was from the same orange/yellowish color family, no green veggies at all. The crispies were good; ate all of those. Fried Rice was also orangey and needed to be cooked longer. I like bamboo shoots as much as the next person, but not a whole can on my plate. Too many water chestnuts also, but the amount of carrots was great. Usually there's never enough carrots for me. Egg drop soup: was trying to figure out what it tastes like since I've never actually had it before. Chicken broth. It tastes like chicken broth. Just with egg floating in it and the occasional carrot or pea, but it was good since the plates took a while to come out. There's a sign posted that says: We are not a fast food place. Note: Don't ask to sub wonton soup on your entree cause "that's a separate item". Waiter seemed annoyed to be asked that question because it clearly isn't a choice offered with the entree on the menu; only egg drop soup or hot and sour soup. I'm sure he gets asked that a lot. Doesn't seem to me to be too much to ask since they obviously have it. ‍ read more

Excellent food and service. Best fried calamari I've had. I know it's a bit off the wall, but ask for tartar sauce (in addition to the marinara sauce ) with your calamari. Beef lo mein and sweet and sour chicken both great and huge portions. PLENTY of options so even a picky eater can find something between the menus. I hit the area for business and decided to eat here bc it was vietnamese and I love asian food. Unfortunately the place food and service was flat. I got a table in the back and went w noodles. I then said ok to egg drop soup even though Im vegan and sure enough the smell made me gag. It was such a strong eggy odor I didnt touch it. The noodles were one note reall I salty. What was real annoyin was I was seated to a bunch of old guys who were cursing a lot which was unpleasant and then it took forever to get my check from the waitress ugh dont plan on returning. read more

I'm from Houston and I've had a lot of great Vietnamese food. The Bo luc lac at Hu Dat is quite possibly the best I've ever had. The meat was tender and fresh and cooked perfectly. The seasoning was amazing. I will be craving this every time I visit Rockport. read more

Turn down your hearing aids . Even with the overwhelming reverberation from conversations at every table the meal was great. It has been years since we dined here. Locals and tourists agree that you must come here often. I love the sign that reads "This is not fast food" but we received ours in a timely manner. read more

Love Hu Dat's! Just be prepared to wait a little for a table, usually not long unless on Sat night. The food d is amazing and the servers are friendly and helpful. They have The Best Egg Drop Soup I think I've ever had. The Red Fish Plate, seafood platter, egg rolls, combo Lo Mein are some of my go to's. My newest favorite is the Fernando. The only drawback is it is noisy and hard to hear people at your own table with those open ceilings. Nothing to absorb the sounds. read more

Pan fried dumplings were yummy. I had the Rooster, the chicken was juicy and a little spicy. Bun was good and the chipotle aioli was perfect, not to spicy or overwhelming. Waffle sweet potato fries. No further explanation needed for those bad boys. I love that they have so many options so it's a good restaurant to go with if you have someone that's picky or if you want asian and they want a burger. Now.... the drunken noodles. We had a little mishap - didn't notice the *** indicating it was spicy. And when the waiter said "original is spicy" we heard "original OR spicy" to which my sister said original. Original - if you like crazy spicy, like a spicy that hits you when you first bite into it and then continues to smack you around later. Get this! I will say, it was good, but SO SPICY!! We had to place another order for the noodles with no spice, as none of us would have been able to eat it (no refunds or exchanges on specials) and when we got that plate out there was a noticeable difference in color (first dish was red with spice). I'm not trying to keep you from trying the drunken noodles, honestly if we're back in this area I'm pretty sure that's what i'll order, I just want anyone who is considering it to know --- spicy is SPICY! The second plate was super good - lots of meat and yummy sauce. So pay better attention to the * and know what spice level you can handle. This place came highly recommended for beef pho. But I was bitterly disappointed. The pho tasted vaguely metallic and must have been made from a paste. I ordered 8 large beef pho broths as I need it for health reasons. And I ended up throwing it all down the sink, as no one on my 5 person family could stand the fake taste. Today while in Rockport we found this gem! We sat at the bar and enjoyed a cold one. The kimchi fries are full of flavor and filling. We didn't stop there though. My husband had the grilled red fish and he loved it. My dish was the star as far as I'm concerned. You must try the Shaken Beef! So tender, so flavorful. It's served with grilled tomatoes and green peppers. Lime salt and pepper are served as well. I just left and I'm already thinking about how to have this meal again before we leave! read more

Hu Dat is combined with Benchwarmers as a restaurant, but there are two different menus. I have only eaten the Hu Dat menu though...if Asian food is a choice I almost always do that! Hu Dat January 16, 2021. Party of eight, 5 Adults, 1 Teenager and two kids. Arrived at around 5:00 p.m. and we were seated promptly with no waiting. A variety of food was ordered and I ordered the a Spicy Dish of a Beef Hunan plate with broccoli, carrots, water chestnuts, mushrooms and bell pepper. After a short wait 7 of us were served. Our 18 year old Granddaughter ordered a Hamburger plate with the Hamburger with cheese, plain and dry. It came! After everyone finished eating. There was much hand raising and waving to get the wait staff to come over and take care of the issue. My plate was bland and NOT Spicy at all. The plate was presented well and the vegetables were crisp but everything was "cold"! The "stir fried" rice was NOT stir fried but it had a nice yellow coloring. The person who took our order came by to apologize for the Hamburger delay and state that he would not charge us for the plate. FYI: he appeared the only one "hustling" and the only one with a smile. The rest of the "Wait" staff appeared to walk around in a daze! Hmmm! My qualifications as an Expert and Experienced Food and Service Critic; I have a BS in Management and have been trained in two Culinary Schools, to include on the job training at other venues. I've managed full service as well as fast food restaurants and have had my own successful Catering business. As a Culinary Trainer, I have trained personnel on how to provide superb cuisine and expert customer service. At the age of 74, I am now retired and enjoy being on the other side of the Apron. read more

I've been a fan for years. My brothers and I fish Rockport and dine here often and have never had an issue with HuDats, a 100% dependable go to. So this weekend I took my wife to just hang on the beach and eat out at my favorite spots. Paradise Key absolutely knocked it out of the park Friday, food, service, ambiance everything. Perfect. Saturday we go to HuDat (now BenchWarmers owned evidently) and we got soup with a beer pretty quick but waited a full hour! I'm not exaggerating, 1:08 because we had noticed the time looking at sunset going in. I mean, we ordered Chinese! Thats usually a 3 minute cook to scorch some veggies and meat in a Wok. My Cashew Shrimp was cool and the sauce had congealed, her Sesame Chicken Wes dried like jerky it had sat so long. I've got a feeling they are trying to do away with the Chinese side since the now combined menu had burgers that seemed to pour out of the kitchen. I'll be giving them one more try but if they are wanting to be a burger joint I'm done, there's dozens of good burger joints and they have better service.. read more

We decided to try this place to see how it was. The unfortunate thing is that they seem to use very high quality ingredients but no seasoning. My wife had noodles with chicken and I had a cheeseburger, but there was absolutely ZERO flavor. Season your food and it'll be great. read more
