Huck Finn is a staple in the McKinley park neighborhood. This is comfort breakfast food. When I walked in on a Saturday morning at 11am, it was packed! I loved seeing an old establishment as busy and bustling as Huck Finn. I came with my two friends and we all ordered different things. My friend ordered an omelet. And my other friend ordered the Becky thatcher meal. I also ordered an omelet but a different one from my friend. We also ordered two baked goods, a Boston crème and cinnamon roll. For the Boston crème, personally I really enjoyed Dunkin' Donuts version so huck Finn came in second place for their version. I would say that the cinnamon roll was pretty tasty! It was flavorful without being too sweet! Our food came out in a timely manner and our waitress set us up without us asking for anything more. The jams, syrup, and butter were all ready to go! Solid neighborhood diner. We stopped in for weekday brunch, there was no wait. We shared the Mexican omelette, Patty melt, and cinnamon roll French toast. The patty melt and the side of pancakes weren't great and I wouldn't order them again. We've had the donuts before and some are better than others. The carrot cake was pretty good, not too sweet. Like Golden Nugget with amazing donuts. You can eat here 24/7, which is how I found out about it. About 20 years ago, while working 3-11, I met someone working the same hours and we went on a low key date after work. The bar she recommended was closing so we only got one drink and I had no clue where we could go from there. She suggested HF as an all night place, so we stopped in, had some food and coffee. I've been back many times since then because HF is the only place in Chicago that serves legit chicken fried steak like you'll get in Texas or New Mexico. Several years ago I read an article in Time Out with rankings of Chicago donut places and I was surprised to see HF won. So I tried one of their cinnamon rolls and took home one of their crazy huge donuts. Time Out was right, both were delicious. So next time you want donuts, stop in at Huck's instead of Dunkin or Stan's. You'll be pleasantly surprised. read more

I was debating writing this review because the manager and waitress showed us the utmost respect and took the situation with grace but their hostess and another worker were extremely disrespectful. We found a shard of a bowl in our soup. We notified the waitress who notified the manager. They apologized and comped the meal, something we were not expecting. The soup was amazing btw. We continued our meal and everything was great. We got to the counter and asked for change to tip the waitress and the hostess and another worker were speaking Spanish. They assumed we didn't speak Spanish so the worker asked the hostess what had happened and she told him that they comped our meal because supposedly we almost ate a shard of a bowl from the soup, while making a face as we stood in front of them. I liked the ambience of this place--classic diner vibes. My group of 4 waited for roughly 15 minutes before getting seated on a Sunday afternoon, and from then on the service was quick and friendly. I ordered the Monte Cristo sandwich, which was a warm ham and cheese sandwich on french toast bread. The bread was soggier and the sandwich was saltier than I would've liked, but otherwise it was not bad. It was quite dense--packed with meat and cheese--and I was struggling to finish by the end. Dipping it in the syrup made for a rich sweet and savory combo, though that flavor got too heavy pretty quick. The fresh side salad was a welcomed addition. Overall, I think this is a solid diner in Chicago with a friendly atmosphere that's perfect for groups and fairly priced food. Though I was not the biggest fan of the food, I also acknowledge I'm biased because I don't particularly love diner-style food. Ordered take out. The food was ok. We had a monte cristo sandwich, turkey club and cinnamon roll French toast. The monte cristo was just ok. The ham inside was great, but the sandwich itself wasn't fully built and was made basically like a grilled cheese on French toast bread. The turkey club was amazing ans the cinnamon roll French toast was good, but could have used more bites with that cinnamon sugar. The fries were ok but would have been better if the fryer grease didn't need to be changed. I'd definitely go back and try it again. I was told to go there for the donuts and did not. I ordered the patty melt and my fiancé ordered the turkey club sandwich. Both of these came with a cup of some sort of soup - skip the soup if it's a weird cream based one. It's just okay and won't help your stomach if you're hungover; tide yourself over with the warm bread (fantastic) and wait for your main meal. My patty melt was as greasy as it was delicious. I haven't been here in a long time. So wasn't sure what to expect. It was busy. I think this is a place for weekend breakfast with the family. We didn't have to wait long. The lot was small and parking spaces limited as there were a few business in the strip mall. We were lucky to get a spot across from the doors. The aisles were tight and hard to maneuver. We had a booth in the corner. The menu had a lot of choices from eggs to sandwiches. So we ordered ribeye and eggs, blueberry waffles, sausage and cheese omelette with a side of broccoli and corn beef hash and eggs. We were all happy with the food. But there's a few things that could be done to get higher marks. The sugar, salt shaker, hot sauce and jelly container were really sticky. They should at least wipe them down. Especially since there are a lot of families with children eat here. The portions served was enough however the prices were high. I had corn beef hash and 2 eggs with toast. It was $9.50. My first time here. Came for breakfast and found everything to be good. I ordered the pigs in the blanket. The sausage was really good and was nicely wrapped in the blanket (pancakes). These pancakes were huge. Pancakes were good , but it is overwhelming. I would prefer thinner and smaller pancakes since the sausages are small. I ended up cutting the ends of the pancakes on both sides. Seriously with the leftover pancakes I had cut could have made three more pancakes hahahahaha. But, overall the pigs in the blanket were really good. Loved their coffee. I should have asked the grand of coffee they use, because I was actually impressed. Next time I go I'm gonna ask. Also, they serve donuts and pastries that are laid out and displayed behind the register area, similar to how Dunkin Donuts has them. Boy do they serve donuts. This place was packed on a Saturday morning. I ordered the Chorizo Skillet with over medium eggs, and my friend ordered burger with fries + chicken noodle soup. The skillet was a little underwhelming for me. I had ordered this same skillet in the past and it was delicious! But today the skillet lacked in flavor. Majority of what I was tasting was plain potato. Pancakes were very nice though. They had a nice sweet, buttery and soft taste which I absolutely love. The service is terrible and the staff stare at you like you're going to steal, the food was ok nothing special and our soup was salty but definitely overpriced, my waitress was a white old lady and she seemed racist and like she hated to wait on us and rushed our meal she brought out our check and asked us if we needed a box before we were even half way through our meal. Great selection of freshly baked donuts and coffee that stays hot. The food selection is huge and if pretty good for a decent price. The servers are great and is located right off the 55. The Hubs says that there is other locations too. I hear they have this giant donut thing that I am 100% coming back for. I always get the omlettes and the portion sizes are huge. There aren't all that many 24-hour diners that I have seen in Chicago in recent years. This is one of the few I've been to and I'd have to say the food is decent and you get decent portions. I had gone here recently as I had a taste for an open face roast beef sandwich (which I knew I wouldn't get at Portillo's or Ricobene's) with some soup. When I got there, I was seated right away. Once I found what I was looking for, I waited for the waitress to come and take my order. I did get an open-faced roast beef sandwich with a cup of split pea soup. Both the soup and the sandwich hit the spot. They both were hot and tasty and the sandwich was a nice portion. I washed it down with a glass of Sierra Mist which was a great complement to the meal. 36 years later I am here to leave a review. The huck finn now is not what I grew up eating. Does huck finn still have it? Yes, for most dishes yes. We all know we ordered the Becky thatcher w/a side of hash browns and some sort of buttered toast. This was a south side staple. And still is too most. Although, lately the pancakes have not been meeting the standards from 2 decades ago. Over all, this is a breakfast spot with dinner and lunch options around the clock. We all loved the bland chicken noodle soup when we were sick accompanied by a biscuit and crackers. Huck Finn is just huck Finn. Good skillets, great American omelettes and a basic cup of joe. The triple decker sandwiches are another American style classic. The country fried chicken steak another must. Biscuits and gravy tasted better but still a good order. And let's not forget the old school liver and onions. I definitely miss the 24hour status(pre-covid). There are so many brunch spots and breakfast places in Chicago.
