Carne Brava - generous portion, delicious flavors

Hugo's concepts (H Town Restaurant Group) consistently outperforms. The vibe on a weekend night at Hugo's is fairly electric, acoustics do make a loud crowd louder. Service is always great and the food is always so flavorful. I've enjoyed the attention from the General Managers who know their wine list well and help with pairings.

    Brunch buffet

Booked a reservation for the Sunday brunch to celebrate Valentine's. I was interested to try their Mexican approach to brunch. The buffet had a nice variety of savory options including: mini quesabirria tacos, lamb roast, carnitas, chips and salsa, various vegetables and salad, enchiladas, tamales, ceviche, etc. My favorites were honestly the Brussels sprouts and the scalloped potato which doesn't really make me want to come back. The quesabirria tacos and poblano egg was nice too. My deal is, how do you mess up the Mexican rice?? It was wet and undercooked. If you can't get the rice right, you're cooked in my opinion. A lot of the food was room temp. The area where the food is served is a little cramped. The service was good. They had some live music going which was pleasant. Overall the experience was lackluster and I would not come back for the food. The vibe going on felt super casual, we paid $100 for 2 but it's not giving valet restaurant.

Still one of the best ayce brunches in town! Live musics starting around 11:30. Place gets packed so make sure to get a resy!

Fish of the day w cauli, guac, and habanero (healthy!)

It's been a very long time since I've written a review. So I'll be starting with my Houston favorites. My late wife and I came here for 15 years at least. I still come, at least once a week and sit at the bar. What sets Hugo's apart is their service. Greeted with a smile and handshake/fist bump every time. They give you a "welcome home" feel, which is exactly what you want when you go out to dinner, esp solo. As for the food and drinks, it's always reliable. When I was younger, we'd opt for the Lechon and Taquitos. Now, I get the fresh fish of the day w/ cauliflower, habanero, and guac. If you are looking to be healthy, this is the place. You can say no oil and get a high protein, high fiber dinner no problem. My favorite spirit (by far) is Mezcal. I've been drinking this far before it became popular. Who made it mainstream? Bobby Flay did way back in the day. Think Mesa Grill at Caesars Palace back in 2012. Come for the consistent food and drinks, return for the service. Hats off all staff members from the bartenders, mgt., hostesses, and even valet. A true Houston staple. I post stories of what I eat on IG. Ish.in.Houston

Hugo's is a Houston staple that always hits the spot. We made a last-minute reservation for Houston Restaurant Weeks and were glad we did. They offer three HRW menus: seafood-focused, meat-focused, and vegetarian. Our table tried everything except the vegetarian, which is actually the one I went for, along with the optional cocktail pairing. At $33 for three thoughtfully crafted drinks, it is a steal. The Menú Nuestro Estilo was well-balanced and full of flavor. The squash blossom soup and quesadilla were delicate and comforting. The braised oxtail empanadas with cilantro aioli were rich and paired perfectly with the Paloma de Guayaba, which was bright and fruity with just the right tartness. For the main course, the grass-fed Black Angus skirt steak with poblano peppers, onions, arroz a la Mexicana, and refritos was tender and flavorful. Mine came out a little undercooked, but the wait staff was quick and receptive when I sent it back. I skipped the accompanying tortillas this time, but the fresh-made corn tortillas here are always a hit. It paired beautifully with the Un Día con Sandía, a smoky and refreshing mezcal and watermelon cocktail. Dessert was a decadent duo of milk and dark chocolate cake with pistachio and cherry compote, rounded out by the Carajillo Oaxaqueño, a coffee dessert cocktail with a mezcal twist. By the end, I was completely stuffed. The best part of Houston Restaurant Weeks is knowing your night out also supports the Houston Food Bank, and Hugo's makes it easy to enjoy a great meal while giving back. Service was warm and attentive, and the lively atmosphere made it feel like the perfect Houston night out. Hugo's has been delivering memorable meals for years, and Restaurant Weeks is just another reminder why it remains a go-to spot in the city.

I am overall impressed with Hugo's vegan options. The vegan enchiladas, Aguachile de Palmito and chips and guac (be sure to ask for vegan version) were all delicious! My only complain was my server wasn't very nice or attentive the 2nd time I came.

Tostadas De Camarones! The best Shrimp ever!

5 stars as usual! My husband and I brought an out of town guest to Hugo's for lunch. He travels the world, and absolutely loved this place! (We knew he would) .... From the first class service, to the beautiful bright dining room Hugo's is so fabulous. Our friend ordered the Carne Brava, my husband had the Lechon, and I had the Tostados De Camarones. And of course the guacamole appetizer was divine. Sadly they started eating theirs before I could get a picture! This place is a must try if you've never been! Simply amazing.

My friends and I made a dinner reservation at Hugo's for the 4th of July and overall had an amazing experience. I valeted due to the lack of street parking which is complimentary (at least when I went). My group was already seated so I joined them and our waiter came by to check in and ask if I was ready within 5 min of my arrival. I ended up splitting 2 dishes with my friend (the enchiladas of the day - chicken with a tomatillo sauce and the Chamorro de puerco) as well as a glass of prosecco. The food was 10/10, both dishes were delicious and so was the drink. It came out pretty quickly as well. Our server gave us great service and helped us split the check as well. Overall, this was a great first experience at Hugo's. The decor is really beautiful inside, bathrooms were clean and the lighting is dim which is great for a date night. I'd highly recommend others giving this place a try and my next visit will be for the Sunday Buffet that I have heard about!

These are extremely yummy food. I had it twice with my parents and with coworkers. Their margaritas are to die for. I ordered duck and it was pretty good. I just love trying out different types of ducks - each culture has its own unique way to make it taste so good

    Sangre Azteca
    Jaime J.

This was my first time visiting and got to experience the Valentine's Day dinner menu. Everything was phenomenal but the best thing that I had was definitely the Chamorro de Borrego (lamb) - the meat was so soft, the mole on it was great, and the scalloped potatoes and roasted potatoes were the perfect touch. My favorite drink of the night was the Sangre Azteca, it paired great with the entire menu although I didn't get the optional drink pairing. As expected, the service was attentive and we were constantly checked on to make sure we had everything that we needed. They had some live music this night that really elevated the ambiance. I did valet my car so I'm not sure if there are other options.

I was looking for a dining option on my way home while I waited out a storm. Typical Houston! It was surprisingly hard to find a place open around 3:30pm! Most of the places on my bookmarks to try opened at 5pm. I didn't want to wait around that long I was hungry! I'm was so happy to see Hugo's was open and participating in restaurant week. Done! They have a valet lot which was safe and monitored. I was able to park right in front which was nice bc I had luggage in my car I was worried about leaving. Walk ins were a breeze and I was seated immediately. I chose the restaurant week menu so I could try a variety. I'm a seafood girl so I got the "between the waves" menu. Everything was fantastic! Miriam was my server and she was so kind, knowledgeable and attentive. I can't think of one thing I would change, this place is 5 stars! Appetizer was sopa y quesadilla de flor de calabaza. Great tasting soup and nice mini quesadilla. I think it would I have been ever better with hot sauce. Next was the octopus. I died and went to heaven. Perfectly grilled with char and tasty. I would order this again and again. Seabass was the catch of the day which is my favorite fish. Another knock out of the park. Amazing. Last course was the cheesecake de queso crema. I don't even like cheesecake but this was so tasty. Lastly I ordered some chips and salsa to go for my husband and they gave me three different kinds of salsa and the black refried beans. He is going to be in heaven. Bonus points for the wifey here!! I'll be back for that grilled octopus and to try the cocktails next time.

Came for the buffet brunch on Sunday. Whaaaaat!! I'm blown away by the quality of food and presentation. Service is great. Restaurant can be a bit loud as it gets packed, but totally worth it. Would love to bring others sometime in the future.

    Aguachile de atún
    Trisha C.

I came here with my friend over the weekend. Thankfully, the reservation was made prior to coming since when we came, they were packed. I had their tostadas de camarones and aguachile de atun. The seafood was incredibly fresh. The size was appropriate to the cost. The tostadas were nicely piled with shrimp and queso. It was perfectly balanced. The aguachile de atún was also very tasteful. I think next time, I will mix it before eating, as the mango, papaya, and blood orange were in the center of the tuna. The service was great. We took our time with eating and did not feel rushed at any point. They also had a nice selection of their dessert, but unfortunately, I was too full by that point. I also wanted to try their mole as I was told by my friends it is one of the few places in Houston to get a good mole, but I will have to try that at another time. Ambiance is great for any occasions.

For my visit, it was crowded but not to where you couldn't hear your table. Dress is casual, good for friends, solo, or pit stop. Service: 5/5 Our waitress was very knowledgeable and friendly. Since it was our first visit there, she gave us some background that it was a Pappa's owned restaurant and food is made from scratch. Food: 3/5 They offer mimosas and I was tempted to order, but was driving and it was 9AM so forewent that option. There are food options for every tastebud. Mark ordered the fried cheese sticks, they were one of the items that I found worthwhile to return for. I opted for the Waffle feast. It included a waffle, that I added pecans on top to, two strips of bacon, eggs your way and hash browns. To say that I needed to add salt and pepper to the eggs and hash browns because they tasted bland and flavorless was unfortunate. It also was served at room temperature, because it was made from scratch, would think it be warmer to hot. The waffle was savory and had good mix and topped with the pecans made it even better. What I eventually found both surprised and delighted me, and Nate's gets a thumbs up overall. Pictures are deceiving as I thought the place would be larger but it's a tight fit for bigger groups. There are only a handful of tables but plenty of character. It's also a bit grimey, unsightly and even a tinge dodgey, which may be a deal breaker for others but is an immediate appeal to me. Two things immediately standout when it comes to the food: the portions and the prices are outstanding. The offerings are as no frills as the rest of the establishment. The other surprise was how much influence there was from Mexican cuisine. Hash browns were the goal, but chorizo and chilaquiles were the bonus. Another surprise? The hash browns weren't as crispy as I would have wanted. It's entirely plausible that I came on an off day, which happens. However everything else was on point as my chorizo skillet was absolutely dynamite, pancakes were fluffy and indulgent, breakfast tacos were outstanding, and my eggs were perfectly softly scrambled. Even the bacon and sausage patties were delicious, which is a tall order considering it's not likely made in house. Lastly, as someone who drinks cold water like it's a hobby (#1), I'm especially grateful for the massive 32 oz cup of water, which is perfect for someone who drinks like a camel. The staff is not the quickest but they are friendly. Spanish may go further with most and they're not the quickest when it comes to greeting folks or cleaning tables. The food is the star and consider paying in cash. ____________ (#1) I'm thirsty.

We asked if we could kindly be seated in another booth to be told the open ones were 'closed' (no clue why it didn't exactly seem like they were in their own section). The next booth she offered us was drowning with the sun. Luckily, all we had to do is look at her, and she immediately offered us a normal booth, not next to a stinky dish bin and in a shaded spot. We all ordered something different off the menu. The food was good but the service just seemed very dismissive and not exactly friendly. I would definitely come back and try it again. I'm a strong believer that may be somebody was having a bad day. And I would definitely come back and just buy a pie and take it home because they looked delicious. Sadly, we didn't get the chance to try any of the dessert pies.

He asked our food order first. We had to ask him if we could get drinks first. 3) When we did order we watched our drinks sit at the end of the bar for 10 min until I had to go retrieve them myself. 4) The food was INCREDIBLY mid for it being that expensive. Undercooked potatoes, overcooked chicken, not a single person at the table of 4 adults had a good thing to say about their meal 5) It took 2 FREAKING HOURS with no one there. When I say no one I mean completely empty 6) Trying to check out and leave. Our server who was looking for an upsell told us he saw a cookie in the back that was ready to go. Thanks for telling our 3 small children that at 9:30. Reluctantly after telling him no several times it was awkward enough to cave. Cookie took about 20 minutes to come out. We had been there for over 2 hours at that point and we had to just get up and leave. If you go to this restaurant after reading this, you deserve the horrible experience you will certainly have.

They had live music on, and from the looks of it if you want to be a part of the show you can as they also have karaoke it looks like. The gentleman that greeted us was so nice and made us feel so welcomed! It wasn't one of those "oh I have to be nice to these guests because I'm getting paid" type people, you could really tell his niceness was genuine. I felt like I was at a fine dining restaurant. Our server was also very nice, and super helpful as I asked for a wine suggestion and she hit the nail with her suggestion. She brought a small sample for me to try before serving it. The food itself was delicious! We got the onion rings appetizer, and you could tell they were made to order. They were super fresh and also crispy. The chicken parmigiana was good, and they were not stingy with their portions at all. The picture I took doesn't do the dish justice. I will definitely go back to this place, as their food, service and overall experience is a great one when you dine in.

We…read moredrove into the mostly defunct strip mall, found the restaurant down on the corner, walked in and sat down and then perused the menu in depth. We shared a bowl of the potato soup where we had no expectations and I thought it tasted pretty decent. But the real test was the entrees. Mr. Picky ordered the Fettuccine Alfredo with shrimp while I opted for Veal Parmigiana, and we each stole a bite from the other's plate. We reached consensus immediately that both dishes were well-seasoned and quite delicious, meaning we would return for more good food in the future. Seriously, we hadn't expected much when walking in and looking around, but were pleasantly surprised at the kitchen's efforts. We finished lunch with an order of homemade bread pudding and tiramisu, the latter of which in 2012 won a chamber of commerce epicurean competition 1st place ribbon. I wasn't there to judge that competition and have had better, but sincerely appreciated the moistness of the bread pudding. While the majority of diners were older and a more mature crowd, there's a lot to be said for value, and we thought the menu price was better than reasonable and I think a lot of people will discover this as a value destination, something we all appreciate.
