I ordered the surfer salad with the grilled mahi mahi $13.49. Very well plated with a big portion of fresh veggies. The mahi mahi was seasoned and very nicely grilled. The house made ranch was awesome. My cocktail of choice was a piña colada, it was a tad bit too sweet for me but overall it was good. The second order was the steak tubular taco $13.99. When you want to be somewhere tropical but you are working to the bone/ just can't make it happen...hey, Hula Hut has you covered!! Love this lakefront area and this is a great place to take a load off after a busy day out on the water. Get your grub on and kick back with a few beverages. The service was awesome and I loved my grilled shrimp tacos. I also tried a frozen margarita which hit the spot. Lots of your typical beverage options. They don't get real fancy but they do not need to, as this is just a place where you can chill out with your typical islander type food (with a Tex Mex kinda twist). It is bigger on the inside than I thought with a cool patio area. Love that it is overlooking the lake and you can watch the sunset while dining. The only good thing is the lady at the front desk was so nice and kind. Everything else was terrible. We couldn't even go past 1 bite of our food. The shrimp tasted spoiled in the shrimp enchiladas. The fried snapper was extremely overcooked. The grilled shrimp weren't grilled at all and the fajitas were cooked on a dirty grill and had grill reside stuck to them. It was bad. Lots of teenagers working there and you can tell. Our server was nice as well. And the lady didn't charge us and you could tell she was fed up with the staff. Came here last year during the summertime and I must say the atmosphere has a great getaway/ vacation feel for Little Elm. The reason I'm reducing two stars is because it was Tex Mex cuisine, the taste was okay and service, but mostly because it wasn't amazing enough to come back. I will give them those three stars for the effort of the decor. As well as the fact that they have a little window into the kitchen that shows the tortillas freshly made. Again, the food was not bad. Hula Hut is a great spot in Little Elm. Located right off of the lake, it has a great patio with hatch covered umbrellas to take in a nice day. The interior of the restaurant is colorful and on the Hawaiian tiki Hut vibe. The original Hula Hut is located in Austin on the lake as well and have a similar feel. The last five or six times that I have been here it has been relatively uncrowded. Today I stopped by for a late lunch and sat at the bar and had a chopped salad. My wife has been attending Hula Hut for years and I finally went there a few months ago. "You have to try the stuffed, fried avocado!" So I did and it was pretty darn good. Of the three times that she and I went together, we sat outside on the patio and had really good service. Yesterday, we were out doing some shopping and wanted to take our 15lb dog with us. Not seeing if we could bring her to the patio, I called at 9:00 AM and again at 10:00 AM, both times leaving a voice mail. At 11:05, I got a phone call from the restaurant letting me know that 1) Yes, one may bring a dog, on a leash, and 2) only in the patio area. Great! We had finished our shopping and were craving their fried avocado. We arrived in a few minutes. Entering the front door, a woman, which I assumed was the MOD, saw me carrying my dog, with a chest harness and leash attached, and said "You must be Alan. You must have rushed right over." We were taken outside and due to a little rain, were completely alone. The music was extremely loud and the MOD offered to turn the music down which was great. Tara was our server. Lovely smile and she brought a small plastic dish with water out for our dog. We already knew that we wanted to eat light and ordered the fried avocado (1) with beans and rice, the platter. It was very quick that waters with lemon, which we asked for, were brought to the table and soon after, was our entree, with two side plates. "Anything else I can bring you?" Tara asked. "Chips and salsa" I replied. "They don't come with the meal any longer. We charge $2 during the week and $4 on the weekends now." As we already had our entree in front of us, I agreed to place an order for them, but also let Tara know that we were disappointed that they were now charging for chips and salsa and it was no longer given as a side for the Mexican styled entree we ordered. I let her know that I would let readers on Yelp know. She quickly came back with a large bowl of salsa and a big basket of chips. It wasn't two minutes later that the MOD came out and asked "How is everything?" she asked. I replied "Very good, but we are very disappointed that you are charging for the chips and salsa. And then it happened. The MOD discarded our displeasure and started telling the story of "We are not a Mexican restaurant. We checked with all the other restaurants serving ships and salsa along this area and with the economy, we had to find a way to compensate our costs." I nodded and said "I understand." So, let's get to what just happened. The server did not suggestive sell chips and salsa, which is a NORMAL accompaniment to all Mexican food. Nor did she tell us that the menus have changes to them. "We are not a Mexican restaurant" was still in my memory coming from the MOD. And after telling two employees that the normal servings that we had been getting and now were being charged for was disappointing, there was no offer to "make things better." At least offer to give a $2 discount for the weekend rate from $4 to $2. ANYTHING. But no. Our total for the one entree and chips and salsa was $19+ change. I left $25. This was with no offers for water refill or clearing our plates as we had finished. Tara took the plates away only after she had served the check. As we were leaving, I asked the MOD at the front hostess stand about a timeline of re-opening the side wing, which I was told should have been ready during the Summer from our last visit. The did round up and anchor the floating mechanical shark that was aimlessly floating around the lagoon next to the patio. The MOD started to qualify the costs of new windows and AC costs were a prime concern to having the other wing opening, which tells me how deep the pockets are of the current owners. Adding costs and not informing customers of added on costs is a concern for not knowing what to expect for the next visit, which may be a very long time (if ever again) away. I felt like I was dictated to by the manager, with no compassion or empathy for our disappointments. I am seeing other complaints in other reviews as well of "charging for chips and salsa" in other reviews. Get ready to see this establishment back with a For Sale sign out front in the near future. read more

Myself and my son walked in. Hostess was wearing baggy jeans and a hoodie. All employees were wearing regular street clothes. Couldn't hardly tell them apart from customers. So when I visit a new restaurant I always order a hamburger because if they mess that up then the rest of the food is not worth eating. I ordered a hamburger medium with no lettuce or tomatoes and a half order of fries. Pretty simple right? I got my hamburger well done and dry with tomatoes on it. I was not a happy camper. The fries were very good. The burger was $14, not worth the price. Also the ice tea was extremely watered down. No taste what so ever. I had to get a separate glass of ice to make it ICED tea. That is really a shame since it would be a perfect place for dog lovers. We had our dogs so you know how that ended. When I mentioned the internet/yelp saying the patio is dog friendly, she said, "That was the prior owner". I am rewriting my review since I do not see it posted anymore. On April 30, 2024, We had dinner with 4 adults and 2 infants. Our server was Isabelle.we sat at table 20. I do not consider 4 adults and 2 babies a large party. Food was ok. Service was acceptable (except that the napkins were dirty). My biggest complaint is that they add an additional 20% in extra charges and fees when the bill is presented. To me, this is unprofessional and lacks transparency. if the Hula Hut needs to charge more, then raise your prices. Amazing customer service! There was a small error in our order (it happens!) and the staff, managment, kitchen, everyone was so apologetic, I've never actually experienced anything like it before! It is very brightly lit inside. Like, VERY bright. I think they could do with removing a few of these flood lights from the dining area. My wife and I split the Steak Big Kahuna Enchilada plate with Mexican rice. DELICIOUS! Honestly, I'd give this place a 3 1/2 star but rounding up because that's what I learned in elementary math. The house Luau sauce they put on everything really wasn't to our liking, but that's just a personal taste. Only 3 tortillas came with the beef fajita. The platter has many different items but we really only ate the ribs and chicken flautas. We were sat at a small table for 5 and it was difficult to eat without bumping each other and reaching over the food. Definitely a cool atmosphere and place to hang. I used to live in the Little Elm area and this was our go to spot. The atmosphere was fun and inviting. Since we were in the area, we thought we would come to our old "spot". I was shocked to see I could get a reservation for 7:30pm on a Friday night and it was 7:20pm. Hmmmm Driving into the parking lot I saw why. Hardly any cars there but the restaurants around them were packed. Come inside and PLENTY of empty tables! We looked at the menu and my first response was "they are charging for chips and salsa now?" Ok. We decided to order chips and salsa. Chips used to be thin and crunchy today...tasted stale and OLD! The salsa was different. Not good, not bad, just different. I ordered a Caesar salad. It FINALLY came and my guest ordered their old favorite the Hawaiian style burger That was the WORST Caesar dressing I've ever had. It was more vinegar and Parmesan cheese than anything. The burger came with no sauce. Server said a plum sauce was supposed to be on it and brought it to us. It was very watery and would've soaked the bun and been soggy. Used the sauce for dipping. At the end, the server said "this place used to be packed but we have new owners and the menu had changed." Yes. And not for the better. Much higher prices and we used to get the key lime pie but no pie slice is worth $10, especially here. We have guest coming in a couple of week and this was one of the places we intended to take them. Nope. Nada. Food was not good, ambiance is gone and prices for what you get is not worth it. So bummed that the new ownership can't or doesn't want to see all of these negative reviews or drive by this area on a Friday night to see most of the other places are packed and you are not. Went to hula hut on a Friday night, we asked to sit outside on the patio we were told to wait "just a few minutes" while several other couples walked in and were seated before us I figured they wanted to sit inside... nope they were sat on the patio. Finally after 10 minutes of waiting we were seated at one of the worst seats on the patio there were plenty of open tables. We waited for 5 minutes or so and someone brought out chips & salsa, about 10 minutes after that our server comes over and asked what we wanted to drink he didn't write it down so we knew we wouldn't get them, we watched him go from table to table taking more orders. We sat for a total of 40 minutes with super salty chips and no water. We ended up walking out, we will never go back to this place. I recently went to a charity event at Hula Hut in Little Elm. My issue is this: the charity event occupied their back room and Hula Hut charged us, the patrons, an additional 25% of our food costs so the event can take place there. Really ? Why do they have to charge us more money ? Aren't they making enough money on the food ? If the event didnt take place there, they would not have had any food or drink sales at all. This isnt the fault of the charity event but rather the greed of Hula Hut ! Hula Hut, you should be ashamed of yourself for taking advantage of the public and of a charity. You will never get one penny from me ever again ! EDIT to ADD: This was the response I got on Yelp from Hula Hut: Penny C. Business Owner Aug 16, 2024 Robert, you may want to know that that alot of times people do not leave our bartender/servers any tips when serving in our event room. Therefore we charge the 25% which goes all to them directly and do not charge for the room as most event venues do. My response to Penny: I refuse to believe that a lot of times people don't leave a tip when being served food and drink. If that was the case, why don't you follow the same protocol that other food and drink establishments follow and add a flat 18% to 20% extra on the bill for a gratuity for parties over a certain amount. On the bill specify it was a gratuity, however a 25% gratuity, that is outrageous. Also, I seriously doubt all of that money went to the servers. In addition, I left a 20% gratuity on my bill, with the additional 25% gratuity as you say, that means I left a 45% gratuity. Again, that is OUTRAGEOUS ! If the 25% did go to the servers, then Hula Hut should refund to the customers for that event any other gratuity they paid. I have good mind to report you to the Better Business Bureau as well as the state Attorney General's office for ripping off the public. read more
