After an acquaintance of my wife's recommended it we threw caution to the wind and decided to drive 30 minutes to try the Humdinger. Cute name but the building not so much. The Humdinger is the epitome of "dive" and that's ok because oftentimes these kinds of places turn out some great food. The Humdinger is sadly an exception. We found the large lot with a small restaurant in the middle and an operating food truck in a corner. We pulled to the back of the building to find a car parked so we took the hint and parked in the same way. Good thing because except for that, you really couldn't tell it was open. Reading signage it appeared that you had to call in your order....we found the line busy but after a few tries we got through and placed our order consisting of a Diet Pepsi, a strawberry shake, a beef humdinger, a cheeseburger and both with tots. The curb service was quick and friendly. Unfortunately, other than the tots and shake, the food (sandwiches) were not too impressive. Specifically, they were of average size and definitely greasy. The hamburger on mine was overcooked. Based on our experience I really can't heartily recommend the Humdinger unless you're very close and very hungry. So in a serious pinch, it'll work. Humdinger was a Kansas City institution before I was born, and I am not a young person. It is the quintessential drive-in. You will find hot, greasy food and it will likely clog your arteries but you will like it. For my money, you won't find a better Italian steak than at Humdinger. I also highly recommend the onion rings, fried mushrooms, and tacos. This is food that instantly transports me back to childhood, in the best way. Now let's talk location. It is not in a good part of town. I should know, I grew up near here and still live in Northeast. Do not be obtuse or oblivious. I hadn't been to Humdinger Drive In for over 30 years and nothing much has changed. It's still a walk in and carry out hole in the wall within a building that has seen much better days. I ordered the Bacon Big Kahuna, which is a BLT on a hoagie bun with 2 fried eggs and hot sauce for $5. The bacon was crispy and plentiful and provided a breakfast sandwich that was priced better and tasted better than any chain burger place. Tots were crispy and hot. We moved to the neighborhood in 2022. The first time we showed up to give it a try, we were thrown off by a couple of employees sitting outside and waving for us to come in. It felt strange so we left. The second time was a different story. We walked up, ordered, and took the food to go. Along with cheeseburgers and fries, we tried the mild tacos and a shake. Everything was as it should have been for a walk up burger joint, and the food really hit the spot. The staff were courteous and helpful and the order came out fast. We met another patron while waiting, who makes it via a point to stop in when they're in town. We're looking forward to coming back Regarding the nature of the surrounding neighborhood, Northeast is a funky place that reminds my husband of NYC in 1970's-80's. The food was just what we were looking for! Yummy drive in food! It's right off the highway and the food is made fresh! Right now you have to call to order in advance and the lovely lady who took/brought our order was so nice and kind! The Italian steak was flavorful and tender, breaded and fried to perfection. This place gets five stars, not particularly because it's a five restaurant, but these folks care about getting you hot, fast serviced food to you with a smile on your face. I work for the Postal Service, and also work nights, during this entire BS Covid crap, this has been the ONLY place I can count on for quality hot food to eat with the lockdown hours, and for what it is, this place deserves to thrive hardcore. Humdinger! Baby, as a KC native this is one of the city's best long-standing restaurants. Possibly best kept secret. No cap. See urban dictionary for translation. The menu is robust and conveniently scribed on the building in large bubble letters. They have a really scrumptious Italian steak sandwich, the pork tenderloin is tender and the breading is just right on that thang! I am so glad we tried HumDinger. The girl working behind the counter was very friendly and nice to explain options, since it was our first time there. (We looked a bit out of place in business attire...) There were lots of regulars. I got the tenderloin and it was really good - crispy outside, lots of flavor. I'd leave off the mustard next time, because it did mask the flavor a little too much for my preference. The combo comes with a big drink and fries for about $6. My friend got the Big Kahuna - meat, egg, cheese, bun, etc. Giant sandwich with lots of flavor. He also got the chili cheese tots. They were good, but the chili is really just meat, so while they were good it wasn't the messy side he was expecting. Dive Alert! Not for the meek! This is a classic drive-in (walk-in actually). Tenderloins, tacos, italian steak sandwiches, tots, rings, egg sandwiches, fried shrimp, fried okra, fried gizzards, shakes of a thousand flavors, just to name a smidgen of the menu items. Some say the best cheeseburger in town. Others say the best chicken sandwich in town. I go there about once a year to make sure it's still there, to test my fortitude and to pay homage to an iconic 60's vintage, urban joint that is just enough unlike anything else in the city. I sort of hate to give this place three stars, because in truth I absolutely adore it. It's exactly the kind of super divey little shack I gravitate toward, and it's just a short walk from my house. I've been many times, and it's always the same two people working there so I have to assume they own it. The well-tattooed lady who takes orders is always super friendly, and the guy manning the grill apparently speaks in mysterious grunts. "You got two chili cheese dogs coming back," the counter lady said. The cook, who must have heard the order coming from me, stood still as a statue until his coworker called it back. "Mrrrffghhhblr," he acknowledged, before leaping into action, slapping a pair of wieners onto the hot griddle. I've never heard the cook say anything else. I like to think mrrrffghhhblr is the only word he knows, but sadly, that's probably not the case. So, great location; awesome quirky little building; expansive menu; friendly service. What's not to like? Well, the food. Not that it's bad! Well, actually, it is, although I find it charmingly bad. The thing is, I love greasy American-style ground beef and lettuce fast food tacos. Yet the tacos here are too greasy, even for me. They're so greasy that by the time I get them home (a matter of just a couple blocks!) they have completely disintegrated into greasy mush with some lettuce. Now, I'm ok with that! In fact, I find it disgustingly awesome. The first time I ordered tacos I was a little put off, but now I order tacos with the expectation that by the time I get home, I'll be eating greasy taco soup; which, while I am fine with it, is difficult to give four stars for. Similarly, their "chili" is actually just their bland taco meat with some kind of weird, sweet and vinegary hot sauce squirted on it. I like it alright (now that I know what I'm getting), but it sure ain't chili. It was like nobody was working there and forgot to lock the door. Place needs some serious work done to it. I appreciate a good dive but the grunge of the place made me wonder about the kitchen.
