There was plenty of space for me to sit away from anyone else there. And the space was fairly quiet. I chose the quarter chicken lunch special because I wanted to try one of their signature hummus options. I opted for the artichoke pesto hummus because it was one I hadn't seen elsewhere and it was delicious. I'm a sucker for chicken shawarma. It's one of the best Middle Eastern foods ever. If you disagree, we might have to throw hands. Anyway, when I saw this place was walking distance from my hotel, I knew I had to try. From the outside, it's underwhelming. The sign is easy to miss. It's in an older strip of storefronts beside Hawthorne that could definitely use some love and care. However, immediately on walking in, I was sure I chose wisely. I had flashbacks to my time working in the Middle East. All the very best restaurants I found over there seemed to be hidden away, hole in the wall places. Hummus House fits that mold perfectly. Inside, there was football (soccer to us in the States) on a TV, Middle Eastern music playing just loud enough, and bit of tasteful decor while staying mostly utilitarian. I was greeted and seated by a very friendly young man who turned out to also be my server. Another thing that reminded me of Oman, where not many places had separate hosts and servers. I instantly liked his attitude, energy, and how welcoming he was to the only white dude in the place. I ordered the zucchini dumplings, a chicken shawarma plate with habanero hummus (the hottest of their 9 hummus choices), and a Coke. My new friend brought me some crispy pita strips and garlic sauce as a starter (think chips and salsa in a Mexican restaurant). The pita chips were perfect, not overcooked or stale. And the creamy garlic sauce worked perfectly with them. 8.5 out of 10. Then came the zucchini dumplings. I don't know what all is in them but I guarantee one ingredient is magic. These things are absolutely indescribably good. Amazing, fabulous, delicious, any other word I can think of falls short. They came with the same garlic sauce and I wasn't mad about it. The flavor combo wasn't just good, it was otherworldly. Over 9000 out of 10. Then came the main event. Perfect strips of chicken shawarma, simple yellow rice, a salad with Greek dressing, and warm pita quarters. I opened a pita and stuffed it with all the things. And, friend? No lie, it was another level, again! I just sat there with my eyes closed, shaking my head in disbelief at how good it was. My server friend noticed and popped by to make sure it was happy head shakes. I don't know, a billion out of 10? Hummus House was the whole package for me. Excellent, authentic ambiance. Moreover, you know it's legit when the folks at the Islamic Center of Hawthorne stop by during Friday Prayers. From the varieties of hummus, to the chicken shawarma wrap, two Kabob entree plate, Greek salad with chicken, and baklava, it's all good. The greek salad dressing is fire and for two years running- has me stuck. With reasonable prices to boot, there's a reason why this establishment is highly frequented by locals and visitors alike. It comes with rice and a delicious Garden side salad topped with pickled beets, red onions and tomatoes. Everyone raved about that side salad which also comes with a choice of dressing. You get to choose from a selection of 9 different hummus flavors. I tried the Jalapeño Cilantro, which was delicious. I also sampled the original, which was tasty as well. The chicken and Kafta were flavorful and perfectly cooked. A side of pita bread, garlic sauce and hot sauce were also included. There is only indoor seating which wasn't appealing at the time. Came here on a Sunday around 5 with my parents and left absolutely stuffed. It's located behind the mall and there's parking available. Credit cards are accepted. Available for indoor dining (no outdoor options) and takeout. Bathrooms are available in the back. The service is super nice and accommodating. You have to get the zucchini dumplings. Even my dad (who hates zucchini because of some soggy zoodles eaten in the past) loved them. They're super flavorful and tasty. If you get a Mediterranean sampler, you get the choice of three options and zucchini dumplings can be one of them! The falafel is super crispy and tasty too. We split two two-kebab entrees among the three of us, and still had leftovers. The kebabs were immensely moist and flavorful (particularly the kofta), which also come with salad, a generous portion of hummus, and rice. I really liked the fiery hummus and the jalapeño cilantro hummus. The roasted garlic hummus is more subdued. You get plenty of pita bread. Also got a mango lassie which was very creamy and sweet. The garlic sauce wasn't too overpowering. The chicken kabob was tender and juicy. They have many flavors of hummus, it was hard to pick which one. We agreed we would like to come back in the future. Would give it a five star but think it could use a sprucing up. The fabrics looked dusty, paint needs to be touched up and the ceiling tiles are stained. The restroom needs help! I can see why this place holds down very strong ratings!! In my opinion the Mediterranean food here is superior to most other Mediterranean places. This restaurant is a good friends of mine favorite spot. I got to try a lot of things on the menu. I tried the kefta kabobs the lamb kabobs, the lamb shank & the chicken. Of course we had the rice, hummus & salad also. The lamb kabobs were my favorite thing, I really liked the flavor- although the meat itself was a bit tough. The lamb shank was not tough- you could cut it with a butter knife & the flavor was good just as good as the lamb kabobs. All in all everything was good and especially the hummus- they have lots of flavors. The restaurant is only serving to go at this time so please keep that in mind. We actually had to drive back a few times for them to get our order right (A bit of a pain) but we eventually got our order correct. They are really nice & gave us a discount as well as free baklava for our trouble driving back to their restaurant repeatedly. Nevertheless we were happy & I would come back to this place, & when I do may update this review. Regardless this is a solid take out Mediterranean spot- recommended!! Happy eating! read more
