No frills chinese restaurant, the service workers can speak some english but if your party has a mandarin speaker, things move along faster. Their dishes are all tasty and their spicy dishes have a good kick to it as well. I came here with a large party and was seated at a large circle table with a lazy susan, the portions are massive and we all left very full. My husband and I went to Hunan Chef often and they never disappoint. Their food is delicious, very authentic and the service is very good. They do catering for special events too. Last time I ordered two big trays of sesame chicken for an event gathering, and they prepared it right on time and everyone loves it. I highly recommend them. read more

We have ordered from this Chinese restaurant located in Pleasanton a few times for takeout. Since it's a mom and pop shop, you have to call via phone to order for pickup. Our favorite dishes here are picked cabbage lamb clay pot (soup) , pan fried sesame bread (so fluffy), and family tofu. We have also tried the bamboo shoot with pork belly and stir fried beef with cumin, which are on the spicy side but also delicious. We were a 4-top and got seated at a booth that was cramped especially since the tables were too short and the amount of food ordered filled the whole table. We ordered fan tuan, chinese donut, soy bean milk, jjajangmyeon, beef chow fun, dry fried green beans and salt and pepper pork chops. It was delightful to see fan tuan and soy bean milk as it's not that common in the area. We had to order it and were pleasantly surprised. It's on point with chopped extra deep fried chinese donut, pork floss and preserved veggies. The beef chow fun was disappointing with the lack of wok hei and matchstick carrots substitution when no bean sprouts were requested-- that's just weird. Most disappointing were the s&p pork chops that contained too much batter and fat. Only 70% of it were edible. I would come back for a simple breakfast of fan tuan and soy milk, but would skip the others. Service was a bit lackluster, but they do help you box your leftovers which was nice. read more

I've been living in the area for years and finally decided to give this restaurant a try and I'm glad I did. The restaurant is a local family owned business with good Chinese food. I came in for lunch and had the Mongolian beef plate. The lunch came with a hot and sour soup that tasted delicious. The soup was very flavorful and had fresh ingredients. My main dish was the Mongolian beef. The beef was so tender and the spices were perfect. I enjoyed the raw onions that were lightly grilled with the beef. The white rice was also tender. I would definitely recommend this restaurant for anyone interested in having Chinese food that's in the area or passing by. read more

Picked up lunch for the parents and stopped here. Their lunch menu had approx 20 items on it. They serve the main dish with "their version fried rice" (looked like white rice with pieces of egg), I wouldn't call it fried rice. I ordered Mongolian Beef, perfectly spiced not overall hot, just enough spice. They also included some Hot & Soup soup, which was delicious, will Definitely order next time I'm in the area. As an appetizer ordered BBQ pork. The pork was good, however they sit it in what appeared to be a watery teriyaki sauce. It didn't need the sauce, it was good as is. My father ordered same as mine but not spicy. My mother order a vegetable soup with thin noodles. Noodles came separately. Soup was still hot when I got to there house. This time around, I called in advance and ordered their cumin lamb (although it tastes like beef), sweet and sour chicken, and their beef chow mein. All very tasty! Their beef chow mein tasted like chow fun but the pasta was the chow mein. The cumin lamb had a nice spicy kick to it and the sweet and sour chicken was the perfect amount of meat and fried dough. We got four items this time: Mustard Green & Bean Curd Sheets with Pork, Cumin Beef, Shredded Pork with Dried Bean Curds, and Ma Po Tofu with Pork. - Mustard Green & Bean Curd Sheet with Pork: this dish offered two protein sources: pork and bean curd sheets. They were savory and their flavors were well balanced with the tangy pickled flavor from the mustard greens. This dish was good with rice or could be eaten just by itself. - Cumin Beef: my absolute favorite item from this restaurant. See my previous review. - Shredded Pork with Dried Bean Curd: this dish is probably my second favorite after Cumin Beef. This dish was packed with tender pork pieces and firm tofu. It was very savory and a bit greasy but in a best possible way. Great with rice or when consumed just by itself. I loved it. - Ma Po Tofu with Pork: this dish was good but not mind blowing to me. It certainly wasn't bad but I generally like my mapo tofu to be more on a salty side, but this one was salty-kinda sweet side. One could argue that this dish's flavor was more balanced I guess. We discovered this spot and dined here once before SIP happened. We enjoyed the dishes we had gotten so have ordered take-out on several occasions. Kind lady takes my order over the phone and repeats my order back to make sure everything is correct. Arrive to pay for my order and wait then waited outside for a few more items to complete my order. All of the dishes that we've tried to far weren't too greasy, had flavor and not too saucy. Salt & Pepper Pork: Nice sized pieces, lightly fried and seasoned well. Broccoli Beef: Pretty standard dish but what I loved about it is how the broccoli was cooked perfectly! Not undercooked. Not mushy. It was just right! I couldn't stop eating the broccoli! Combination Chow Fun: Not a lot of veggies in this dish. But good noodles and great flavor as well. Crispy Garlic Chicken Wings with the sauce on the side: I always order with the sauce on the side so I can control how much sauce to put (yeah... I'm a pain like that). These wings were cooked right! Crispy skin and the meat was cooked. Some places don't cook it enough and you get bloody joints. Some places overly cook wings or stab the wings to get it cooked more. Not these! Perfect! We love Chong Qing Chicken but the meat somehow is always hard; not so here. Full of flavor and still had that great numbing we were looking for 2) Hot and Sour Soup: unassuming but delicious. When it arrived at our table, I was like "I'll probably have to ask for white pepper to add" but upon trying it, no modification was needed - the taste was just perfect. So delicious when it is piping hot!! 3) Seafood Tofu Claypot - the tofu. Is. So. Good. In this dish, you simply must try it. They don't over cook the Napa cabbage which I appreciate and they don't skimp on the ingredients! This place is pretty good. I ordered takeout. They said they were busy, so it would take 30 minutes. It actually took about 45 minutes, which is a long time for Chinese food. The food is a bit bland but plentiful and very fresh. - chow mein was probably the best dish. Lots of barbecued pork and noodles perfectly cooked. - potstickers were pretty average. Six in an order, so decent deal - orange chicken was just ok - mu shu chicken was bland and pancakes fell apart easily - steamed rice was excellent Went here because Dragon City was closed on Tuesdays. The last time we dined here was over 15+ years ago! It wasn't good at all so we never came back. We were in the neighborhood recently and we decided to give it a try, thinking that it might have changed ownership. We were with another couple. They had been there a few times in the last 6 months and they thought it was pretty good. We started off with Westlake Beef Soup, Fried Shrimp and Pot Sticker Appetizers. That was followed by Cumin Beef, Mu Shu Pork, Spicy Garlic Sauce Egg Plant and Plain White Rice. The individual dish ratings are: Westlake Beef Soup - 4 star; would have been 5-star except it was slightly underseasoned. Fried Shrimp Appetizer - 5 star; Large Prawns in a light, delicate batter. Pot Sticker - 3.5 star; Filling was good but skin was too thick and it became somewhat 'gummy' while eating them. Cumin Beef - 5 star; Excellent, spicy-hot flavor and very tender beef slices Mu Shu Pork - 4 star; Would have been 5 star except they only gave us 3 pancakes for the 4 of us. Pancakes were really thin but they were still strong enough to hold the filling when wrapped for eating. Flavor was excellent! Spicy Garlic Sauce Egg Plant - 5 star; Great flavored sauce, nicely balanced with the egg plant. White Rice - 4 star; would have been 5 star if rice were a little more tender. I think it was a little short on water during steaming. Portions were OK, not generous but not skimpy either. Service was good but the order of the dishes coming out could have been better. We got the pot stickers after they delivered two of the main dishes. The place was clean with good lighting and proved to be a nice, casual, Northern Chinese food restaurant. The cost was reasonable. The bill came to $83 after tax but not including tip. Was craving hot and sour soup and came across Hunan Chef. I called and placed my order and was told my order would be ready in 10 minutes. As an aside, their soup is vegetarian which was great! (we don't eat pork and sometimes it's mixed in). She even asked if egg was ok - really appreciated that. Pick up was easy; knocked off a star as the person who gave us our soup wasn't wearing a mask. The soup itself was delicous! The right amount of spice and filled with tofu and egg. Will definitely be ordering from here again soon! read more

Tried this place out for lunch today. My dad was searching for a Chinese place and this place was closest to where we were. We ordered the following food: -Wonton soup -Chicken chow mein -Broccoli beef -Sweet and sour pork The wonton soup tasted kind of bland for me. I think that the mushroom doesn't really blend well with the soup but overall just the wonton itself tasted good. As for the other dishes, they were all pretty good. We enjoyed what we ate.
