I ordered takeout and the food was was fine. Nothing to rave about and nothing to complain about. The only thing of note was when I picked up my order, the lady working either was chatting with her friend or fellow employee (I assume the were speaking Chinese, but I could be wrong). I felt unwelcome, like I was interrupting. Like, there wasn't even a "here's your order thank you" to me. It's not that she was speaking another language or to her friend, but that she didn't acknowledge me at all that bothers me. The food portions are good but the service is okay. The lady who was our server would just take dishes without asking us if we were done. Also, when given the bill we payed cash. She took it and brought us back the change saying that tip had been taken out already and didn't give us a receipt back. After doing quick mental math realized she took a 15% tip which is the normal but would preferred if she had given us the option to put how much tip or at least a receipt showing how much she tipped herself since it wasn't shown on the bill. read more

Here is the problem. My wife and I got there around 5:30 pm. Lots of people coming and going The sign on the door says at least 6 days that they will be closed including last night. The owner knows us and said there would not be anyone dining in last night. So I said you're open for take out. And the owner said yes. Just not dine in. We gave them a couple of weeks before visiting again. I'd normally give them 4 stars but their food is nothing special. We ordered it to pick up and we're disappointed in the BBQ pork that had been overcooked and smothered with plum sauce to cover it up. The mu shoo pork was very short on quality and content. And the honey walnut shrimp was overcooked to the point it was tough. I'll take this opportunity to try some other places to find a new go to joint. We left. Ok. I have to give them 5 stars because 4 stars aren't enough...but that's not to say that this was 5-Star Chinese food...per se. We went to Hunan Garden because it was my daughter's birthday and she chose Chinese food. Being from the SF Bay Area, we have very high expectations for what constitutes "good" Chinese food and find anything that would be considered "pedestrian" abhorrent to the extreme. needless to say, we had low expectations going in. Hunan Garden is small; maybe 30 or so seats. It's part of a shopping center anchored by a Vons and CVS and is tucked in amongst a dry cleaner and small salon. It's entirely bland from the outside. But looks are often deceiving. Inside, they have put some effort and creativity into their decor. The booths have China-Blue coverings, even cushions in the booths, some lovely photography of authentic Chinese culture that has nothing to do with those stereotypical koi pond and dragon prints. It's a little tight but not too bad. The plates and serving dishes are mismatched but it ended up just feeling homey...I don't coordinate all my dishes when I make dinner, I just grab whatever works...ain't nobody got time for that!...am I right? The food was good!!! Not the best I've ever had, but significantly better than barely edible, which is often the case with these tiny spots. We had a variety of dishes: chow mein, fried rice, mango chicken, dumplings, mixed vegetables, egg rolls and dumplings. (We don't usually get adventurous our first time!). Everything was made well! Flavorful, good textures to meats, nothing over-cooked, everything came out hot and in a timely manner. It wasn't mind blowing, but it was good food that you want to eat. But here comes the 5th star...the staff! As I said we came in for my daughter's birthday. We brought her cake with us and right away our server, Susan, took it and put it in their fridge for us. They rearranged the tables to accommodate our party of 7 with the goal of us being comfortable and having plenty of room. They were friendly and attentive and really went out of their way to acknowledge my daughter's special day. At one point, Susan actually sat down and sketched a portrait of each of my 4 kids! And they actually look like my kids!! Throughout the meal our drinks were refilled, we were checked on and Susan and her co-worker were sweet and seemed to genuinely care about our experience. At the end of dinner, Susan took the candles I had brought and arranged them on the cake, lit them and walked the cake to my daughter and started singing the birthday song! She was so sweet! Then she insisted on cutting the cake for us and serving it to us as well. She did all this while helping other customers and managing takeout orders. Then she boxed up the leftover cake and food, packed it all up and had it ready for us when we were ready to leave. My daughter hugged her and thanked her for making her birthday "the best EVER!" We paid $108 for enough food to stuff 7 people and have quite a bit of leftovers. I feel like that is very reasonable. My final tab was quite a bit bigger than that though because I just had to leave her a fat tip. Service like that just makes me feel like parting with all the money I have in my purse! So really, it's simple. Hunan Garden gets 5 stars because it's a place I want to go to again. I know I'll enjoy the food. I know the staff is going to friendly and helpful. I know it's going to be comfortable. My only concern now is that everyone in Camarillo will read this and realize that they need to check it out and it will be busy all the time and I won't be able to get a table! But this is one of those places I hope will be around for a good long time, because there's no other Chinese Food place I know of in the area that has anything close to something I want to eat. read more

Here's the BIG surprise: MANY plant-based meat dish options. I can't wait to try them all out on my vegan friends (and without them too). "A" already for effort. This unassuming and reasonably priced place is still not open to inside dining, but the take out is super, and there's a bench outside if you're making a quick stop, as we were. It's clearly a family owned business, with the care and pride that's so good to see. The salt and pepper squid tasted dry and rubbery like it had freezer burned. The honey walnut shrimp had way too much batter. I've tried this place 4 times over the last 8 years, being that we live so close to it. After each time we tell ourselves not to do it again. I really have to echo the comments here that say it is tasteless. There is a seeming complete lack of flavor or spice across the dish. Tonight we tried sesame chicken, honey walnut shrimp, and egg rolls. That came with fried rice, watered down mustard (literally watery runny), and sweet/sour sauce. I can't believe how disappointed I am.... again. ugh. In the past few years, I've learned how to make some of these dishes from various youtube chefs, and they're incredibly easy and straight forward, really flavorful, and a crowd pleaser. These dishes taste like someone made them without half the basic ingredients. Everything hits flat and dud. I'm not really a panda fan at all, but i'd much, much rather eat that than this. There are at least THREE different places in Camarillo that are much better. As I sit here with my leftover food still warm in their nearly full to-go packages, I can't believe how disappointed I am in myself for believing that maybe they would taste any different than before. I don't know what is worse, the blandness of this food, or that there are so many people who say it's amazing, because they must have a wildly different flavor palate than me. Vegan options- yay yay yay! Finally a Chinese food place with actual vegan options. In all honestly the food is good, not bomb, but good is enough sometimes (specially when you're vegan lol). I've had every item on their vegan menu, I have been satisfied and will continue to repeat the items. My friend had the regular options -non vegan- and she really joyed the food- she said it was delicious. The potions are big, you get a cup of white or brown rice and the entree portion is big! Customer service is lacking at times, we've been rushed out of the place by the server giving us the receipt is and standing there for us to pay. Yum. We met our former neighbors from Carpas here. We had tea to drink. Dishes ordered: cashew chicken (good), orange chicken (yum), and shrimp and veg(good). Neighbors ordered Kung Pao shrimp and chicken, respectively. Everyone ordered the lunch special, pretty reasonable. Most of the specials were 7.99 or 8.99, with a few exceptions, of course. We wanted to dine at the curry leaf restaurant in the same plaza but there was an hour wait as there was a big office party. We don't regret going here, it was pretty tasty. read more

Our takeout dinner was a huge disappointment with the exception of the hot and sour soup which was delicious. The Mongolian beef was about 30% onions and tasted like it had been on a steam table for many hours. The cashew chicken may have been fresh many hours before but certainly not when we received it. I hadn't eaten here for a couple of years and won't be going back. Such a disappointment because I love Chinese food. Guess I'll have to keep making my own! read more

My girlfriend and I found this place on Yelp even though we've been to a couple of restaurants nearby as well as the Vons and CVS in the same lot, and we were pleasantly surprised. We got the steamed dumplings, baby bok choy with mushrooms and crispy duck. The stars were the dumplings and the mushrooms; I don't know how they prepared them but the veggies were packed full of flavor, and the dumplings had just the right amount of ginger. Don't miss out!
