Some chicken pieces were so old when you smell them it makes you gag.... some pieces tasted fine but the ones that tasted off smelled even worse! My husband and I were taking a trip through the area. We stayed at the Holiday Inn Express. They gave us a list of restaurants that deliver. We called and placed our order, we gave our visa card number and were told the order would arrive in 45 minutes. After 1 hour and 30 minutes my husband called and inquired about our order. Hunan Garden is located on the back side of the big shopping center - approach it from D Street. This restaurant once was downtown on G Street, and had a sushi place next to it. Now they are combined into the same place, here. There's both lunch and dinner menus as well as an extensive sushi list. We ordered from the dinner menu (even though it was lunch time) and got a huge amount of food. The Xin Jiang lamb was tasty - flavored with cumin and lot of onions. The menu did say both green and regular onions- but there were only the regular kind in it. The deep-fried tofu with vegetables was also excellent. We ordered a bowl of miso soup and there was enough for two. The meal came with rice and I would have like a bit more than the one bowl they gave us, though not enough to order another one... This is worse than Panda Express. We ordered Mushu Pork and Salmon Teriyaki as a dinner special. It was really disappointing how poor the quality of meat and produce were. Also the balance of flavors was just way way off and the dishes were incredibly over salted. The mushu pork was almost inedible because it was so salty and greasy. The "teriyaki salmon" was like a frozen puck of mechanically separated meat that has been molded to look like a cut of fish. It almost seemed like imitation salmon. It was tasteless and topped with a thick gelatinous teriyaki sauce. I get the feeling that the employees really don't care - as we got the wrong soup and the wrong bill. So....my daughter and my two grandchildren wanted a nice dinner before going to open house at my 8 year-old grandson's school. We've been to Hunan Garden a couple of times before, and ordered 'to-go' once. Each time it's gotten worse, but tonight was just ridiculous. Upon entering and standing at the door, a lady just pointed us to a table. After 14+ minutes we started thinking about just getting up and leaving, but someone finally brought us menus. A guy came back a little while later to take our orders, but never offered tea or asked us if we wanted anything to drink. Nor did anyone offer to get us a booster seat for the 2 year old. When the food arrived, it was disappointing. Daughter said the Sesame Chicken was fine, though the sauce was a bit gooey. But my vegetable fried (brown) rice had very few veggies on top, and no green onions at all. What?? It was just barely edible. No one ever came to check on us, and we had to go up to the counter to ask for to-go boxes. On a personal note, the kids were not allowed to run around, and we cleaned the table up after our dinner. We kept them quietly occupied with our phone apps. And, except for one incident of a bumped nose, they behaved well. All in all, we felt like we were unwanted. When I went up to the register to pay the bill, I actually asked the lady if there was a problem of some sort, or if children were not welcome there. She muttered something and acted as if she didn't understand what I was saying. We chose Hunan Garden because we wanted a nice healthy meal, there were very few people there, and we had time constraints. Needless to say, we won't go back. Love this place! Best Chinese restaurant in GP for sure. The portions are huge for the price and we always have leftovers.

This has been one of our favorite Asian food places for years. We love the lunch specials and always have great portion sizes. My personal favorite is their war-wonton soup in the winter time. It has the best flavor soup base and is always full of veggies, meat, and wontons. My second favorite is the cashew chicken :) My husband loves their teriyaki chicken. He is down there picking up our to-go order as I type this! So thankful they have stayed open for take out during this season. read more

Walked into a mostly empty restaurant at 9 pm on Halloween. Service was quick. The problem was the sushi. I don't recall what my husband ordered but my Las Vegas roll was in editable. I have never had sushi served that has a weird fish taste. Needless to say I did not eat my roll and the waitress seemed uninterested in asking why I clearly had 99%of my food on my plate and did not want a box. My husband and I are quite astonished with this place. The service was phenomenal, the food was very delectable, and the wine was amazing. The service was honestly, just right. Not too much to where it's an annoyance, but not too little to where you're wondering for 35 minutes where your waitress is. I ordered the teriyaki chicken which has amazing flavor and the cabbage and carrots that came with it were very crisp and fresh. The white rice was cooked to perfection; not too sticky but not too dry. My husband ordered the orange chicken, which was phenomenal! It is by far, the best, orange chicken we've had so far in the town of Grants Pass. It's not too much orange, and it has a ton of flavor! We also ordered the miso soup, which compared to Umi comes second best, but they did their best and it was actually quite good. No, we ordered the Po Po platter, which was very delicious and we will definitely be getting that again! The general environment for this restaurant was very relaxing and calming, and very clean. I was quite impressed with the cleanliness and I wasn't overwhelmed as soon as I walked in which is very nice for a decent dinner out. This was probably the dirtiest restaurant I have ever been in. The glass table top was disgusting and so were the plastic coated menus. The glass front doors were just about as bad. If I had not been with other people I would have gotten up and left. The food was poor and the fired rice only warm. Made me wonder what the kitchen looked like. They have really good quality main dishes, like their sesame chicken; smaller bites, breaded dark meat pieces tase fresh & sesame sauce. Their meals come with soup, their meals come with a wonton & egg roll. Their fried rice is cooked right & has nice veggies, meat & eggs added in. I like their Po Po platter, as their wontons are the best I've had at a restaurant so far. They've got good sushi & deep fried rolls (I just really like deep fried sushi). Not sure what changed with the establishment. Order foil wrapped chicken, pot stickers and two entrees, orange chicken and sweet and sour delight. The waiter/manager brought out the hot and sour soup which is normally our favorite and it was cold. We had to send it back which he microwaved and brought back. Then we waited at least 25 minutes for the appetizers. The pot stickers were great but the foil wrapped chicken was burnt and very dry. Had to scrape it off the foil. We finished those and waited another 10 minutes for our entrees which were cold to the touch. We told the waiter and he asked what we wanted to do. We were hungry and waited this long already so we asked to have our orders prepared again and not to just microwave them. Sweet and sour shrimp and pork are never the same reheated in a microwave. The water admitted that he took too long to bring out our orders took the dishes to the back uttered a few choice words and the next thing we hear is the microwave door over by the sushi bar open and close. He came around the counter and put our other entree in the 2nd microwave. I explained that we wanted new dishes and he crudely objected. At this point we were both afraid to eat anything else he brought us and i agreed to pay for the potstickers and leave. He went back to our table looked at the remains of the burned foil wrapped chicken and said we had to pay for it because we consumed part of them. I cancelled the large to go order of hot and sour soup and he charged us for the pot stickers and the burned foils wrapped chicken. I paid the 12 dollars and asked to speak to a manager and he explained that he was the manager. I was suprised by what he said next, "You don't ever come back here, I never see you again." Keep in mind there was only one other table seated when we arrived and they already had their food. The place has gone down hill. I went to pick up an order my step dad had placed. I actually went in to get it 10 mins later then the time they had told us it would be ready. When I opened the door 5 people were in line waited 10 mins and still no one had been helped. When I was finally helped and paid for my order it had looked like they had just placed my order. Which at the time I felt was ok because they looked under staffed... so I sat down with the other waiting who were all for door dash...and after 30 mins. someone else came in and said they had called in an order and he got his order in about 10 mins... so I asked hey where is my order? The man at the counter looked at me went to the kitchen and then gave me no answer and continued to help all the other door dashers... I waited another 10 mins and asked hey where is my order how much longer will it be? He then looked at me again with an oh no look... and then I saw him take an order from the computer and gave it to the kitchen.. I knew that was my order.. He then told me it would be another 20 min wait! And I said what happened with my order and the man said he didn't know what the kitchen was doing and just played dumb. I moved here from Cali. and was use to tons of great Chinese restaurants to chose from. I thought I was never going to find one here, until I found Hunan Garden hiding behind Jcpenny's. The food is fresh, no MSG, and the service is quick and good. We have a good size family so we get the generals chicken, lemon chicken, broccoli beef, pot stickers, chow main, teriaki beef, and paper wrapped chicken. All of it is excellent, especially the paper wrapped or as many call foil wrapped chicken. This is a restaurant we take family to when they are here to visit and they love it. For the most part, the Chinese restaurants in Southern Oregon leave much to be desired. I discovered Hunan Garden by accident. It is by far the best Chinese Restaurant I have eaten at in Southern Oregon. If it was in the Bay Area, I would eat there regularly. Hunan Garden scores near the top in Food Quality, Price, Cleanliness and Service. Whenever I am in Grants Pass, I try to go there and have the Mongolian Beef. Lunch comes with a main, soup or salad, an egg roll, Fried Rice and Chow Mein for $5.99. I took a good look at their menu and most of the dinner entrees are around $8.95. They just seem to do things right. Last time I was there, I got the lunch special to go. They included everything: Egg Roll Sauce, Hot Mustard, Chopsticks, Fork, Soup. Whenever I get something to go at other restaurants, I feel like there is always something that is missing that I have to ask for. Like a lot of Asian Restaurants in the area, they serve food from different cultures. They have a Kalbi, Chicken Teriyaki, Sushi and Udon on the menu. We were thankful and excited to receive delivery from this restaurant since we had a long day traveling and staying at a local hotel. Doordash delivered the food with no problems. Before the DD person left, i asked if there were eating utensils supplied since we were in a hotel room and none were otherwise available. They indicated that usually they are and wrapped up in a napkin. Opened up bag of food and NO utensils. :( Had to go ask front desk for some. Ok i get it, sometimes this happens... We FINALLY sat down to eat and the food was either bland or overly salty. My husband got the cashew chicken and he said it tasted like stew chicken (?) and the texture was strange..?? I got the beed and broccoli and it seemed especially salty, maybe too much MSG? We also ordered spring rolls which came in an order of 6 and i believe cost $6.50. They also included 2 small crab ragoons at no additional charge. The rolls were REALLY greasy and were from frozen :( All of this cost us about $35 and we had to throw it all out and were still hungry but too exhausted to order anymore food. I think this was sold because things seemed a little different as i walked in the door. I did not think much of it and ordered some Won Ton soup to go. There was a lot less stuff in the soup and the won tons tasted like pork sausage. I guess thats fine if you like that sort of thing but having ordered the same soup about 500 times before thats not how I expected them to taste and was very disappointing. I have followed this restaurant though two moves and its the only hunan / szechuan style restaurant in this little town and i am sad that it has changed for the worse.
