Disclaimer: Rarely 5 stars because there is always room for improvement... Honestly, I don't really want to write this review because it's one of those hidden gems that I sort of want to gatekeep, but I can't be selfish lol. This place has been around since 1985, at a couple locations, but currently they sit on a corner in the Restore shopping center. Waaaaay unassuming from the outside, but fear not, the menu is awesome. I've been here twice. The first time was a few months ago and we missed the lunch specials because of time, so we ordered off the regular menu. I had a huge bowl of war wonton soup filled with fresh chicken and shrimp and veg. These bowls are meant for sharing so I had two more meals from it. I'm also pretty sure I had the gyoza, all of which is made in house. My second visit was yesterday, a Wednesday at lunchtime. The restaurant itself is not huge, approximately 10-ish tables, but most were full. We were greeted promptly with jasmine tea - it was about 85 and humid that day, but I asked for a cup of ice and made some fabulously refreshing jasmine iced tea! Hit the spot! This time I ordered the mu-shu chicken lunch special. There are so many standard hunan options available like Kung Pao, sweet and sour, etc. each lunch comes with your choice of egg drop or hot and sour soup, served with a bowl of crispy wontons, white or fried rice and a mini egg roll. These portions are huge! For anywhere between $14.25-$14.55!!!! The mu-shu comes with a tangy plum sauce and two pancakes, tons of white meat chicken, bok choy, green onions...just so tasty. The chicken fried rice was a massive portion also, served on the same plate, so it all became one eventually. The soup was delicious, light and great amount of egg...the eggroll was typical and I'm not a huge fan, but it worked. But the mains are really just good down home eats. I literally had enough leftovers for another two meals. Hunan is family owned and ran...our server is the son and he is delightful and fun and engaging and thoughtful and just so lovely. Service is unpretentious and welcoming. It's an older building and the interior is what people would say is dated, but you aren't eating here for asthetics! It's off the beaten path off Route 66, but definitely worth going out of the way a bit. Flag has changed a lot in the five years I've been in AZ, and there is basically most fast food chains and other garbage, which is why I tend to love the little mom and pops that have history and longevity. And because it's located in Old Flagstaff you get more authenticity and less crowds and superficial, "trendy" restaurants. I'm old school, I like personable hospitality and good, quality, inexpensive eats. Definitely worth a visit! read more

Had a nice dinner here. Chinese is one of our comfort foods where we can all get something we love. Tashani(spelling) was really wonderful and had an aloha type of personality. Incredible lunch bargain! Awesome food with huge portions. The service is always fast, efficient and friendly! We had 2 lunch specials. Each comes with hot tea, soup, rice (steamed or fried), a spring roll and your entree. Mine was the Gung Pao 3 flavors. It includes chicken, shrimp and pork in an incredible sauce. Rich and tangy. My wife had the Lemon Chicken. Wow. Huge in size, portion and flavor. Rich lemon flavor but not overpowering. Price was $15.95. Great bargain. A great small business to give a try! read more

Other plate: Shrimp and scallops with fried rice and requested chile sauce on the side. Yeah, as that Chile sauce is hot! Ugh. My dish was bland. I had to kill it with soy sauce. I thought I was getting fresh shrimp. Nope! It's the precooked shrimp. The shrimp used in shrimp cocktails. Yuck! Threw out the shrimp and just left with way too much sauce. Thought I would give this place another try since the last fiasco when I bit into bug in my chow mein five years ago. The food is usually pretty great. Anybody in that store that is not Asian (waitresses and waiters, bus boys) are absolutely kind and considerate. Usually the owners are the ones that are rude or tell you that you have to pay extra to eat there after you ordered to go. The waiters and waitresses are on top of their customers as well as the cleaning of the restaurant. As long as yo don't go too close to the end of the night, you won't get the hard left over rice. I've made the mistake of ordering before they close and when we get home to eat, our rice is either old and crunchy or not cooked and crunchy. Sucky!! read more

Super delicious and filling. Was a colder day in flagstaff and this was just the ticket. The staff are very friendly . The restaurant was pretty busy but they do a great job taking care of everyone. They do have daily lunch specials from 11am-3pm. Started off with some hot n sour soup, pot stickers - super crunchy and freshly made. Had the lunch portion of mongolian beef and that was more than enough to keep me filled til dinner time . Definitely recommend it for anyone passing thru or who live locally. read more

First time here. Ordered the beef and broccoli lunch combo for takeout. The beef was tough the sauce was tasted good but was to soupy. The egg roll that came with it was about the size of my thumb and packed inside on top of the rice not ideal. I might try something else next time. read more

The new owners are terrible. I've eaten at this place for 30 years and I'll never eat here again. The lady in this picture thought the complaint I was telling her was funny. She continued to smile and laugh. I miss the old owners they gave excellent service to their customers. The owner's wife found me on Facebook and her husband is harassing me to remove my review I posted. I've asked to please stop with the messages but they continue to messsge me on Facebook. So be cautious if you eat at this restaurant. Food was pretty mediocre at best. We got the sesame chicken and the kung pao chicken both with fried rice and egg rolls. There wasn't much chicken in the kung pao and the sesame chicken was half batter and falling apart. The fried rice was just okay. The egg rolls were good so give them that. The service and ambiance was decent but hard to say for sure as we did carry out. Overall definitely not worth the price. If it was half the price I'd still be iffy about going but paying ~$50 for crappy food was not worth it. Try elsewhere. read more

Haven't been to Flagstaff since about 2018, so haven't had dinner at Hunan Restaurant East since then. Finally got back to Flagstaff two weeks ago and promptly had dinner at Hunan Restaurant East. Was a bit concerned by some of the negative reviews on Yelp, but we loved it! Huge portions, very tasty food, and friendly and helpful servers. Loved the hot & sour soup, cream cheese won tons, egg rolls, moo shoo chicken (they call it mu-sui on the menu), and Chow San Shein (a platter of chicken, beef, shrimp and vegetables in a dark sauce). The portions are so generous that we had lots of leftovers to take home. Next time we're in Flagstaff, we will definitely go back to Hunan Restaurant East. read more

Not sure why this restaurant is rated so low. Our waiter was very informative and helpful in choosing our meals, our food came out fast, everything tasted good, and the portions were generous. Nice authentic food. The complex might look a bit sketchy from the outside but the interior was cozy and there were many customers. I recommend the MaPo bean curd. Way overpriced, the worst Chinese food I've had. Two entrees and an appetizer cost $50 and the whole thing went in the trash. Veggies were canned and the meat was really poor quality. Ordered curry chicken and king pow beef which had no flavor. The only positive is that the portions were large, however the food was inedible. Will never go there again, do not recommend. read more

So, Hunan used to be a busy week night go-to for us. For a while, with delivery options available from other Chinese food places (not Hunan), we didn't select this as often. Then, as luck would have it, it was convenient for us to pick up dinner here again. We called ahead, ordered our usual, Mongolian Beef, General Tso's Chicken (an extra order in fact because our kids love it and it makes for a great lunch for them the next day) and Chicken Chow Mein. The good news is they offer rice with every dish- most restaurants don't offer rice with noodle dishes so that is a plus here. Also, they are speedy! They said 20 minutes for pick up and we were there early and our food was ready! (Likely because everything is pre-made in the back but hot and same day for quick Chinese food is kind of expected). Here's where things went major downhill... We got home and unpacked our to-go containers, all overflowing with juices from the food- they did kind of bag the saucy ones but you won't be able to store leftovers in the to-go containers. Upon opening we had everything right except the General Tso's Chicken. There was bell peppers, onions, carrots and mushrooms. From all the previous orders and from any other place, this is not General Tso's Chicken. My kids were super disappointed, as were the adults. There were tiny bits of chicken but not nearly what we expected. So, we made a call. I wasn't mad by any means, just a little annoyed and hoped something could be done. I spoke to one person who immediately said "let me talk to the cashier". A few seconds later the girl that took the order (I presume) came on and instead of being friendly and helpful bluntly asked "so, what's going on?". I explained that while it isn't the biggest of deals, I don't think we got what we ordered. I told her the General Tso's Chicken wasn't right. She doubted me from the get go and asked if there were bell peppers in the dish, to which I answered yes. She said well that's the dish then. And that was the end of it all... no offer for any correction at all. I think I'm more frustrated at the lack of customer service than anything at this point. Even if by some weird chance you make this dish with bell pepper and everything (which, we did some googling and this is NOT the case for like any General Tso's Chicken) some understanding and a little give would have gone a long way. I mean at least offer the option of having me drive the dish back. It wasn't even an option- I was wrong and that was that. I guess I should have known better. The front door and host stand is littered with signage about what they don't do or offer or what you as the customer shouldn't ask for- I mean, no utensils or plates if you order to-go meals after 3 pm, like why?! I don't know...I just thing the whole place is a mess right now and the food isn't good enough to keep me coming back, especially with the lack of service. read more

Coming into this restaurant for the very first time I was so not impressed... the customer service is very pleasant, upon getting our chili sauce Wong tones to dip and soups, that part was great made our stomach very happy... but once our food was delivered our fried rice was terribly dry and the main dish Mongolia ln beef was so chewy just not good ... couldn't even eat a quarter of the plate... so sad won't be returning unfortunately read more

Hi, I don't normally have a bad review on restaurant. But when we got back to our campground to eat our chinese food that we traveled seventy miles one way, & then another seventy miles back home. Our food was smashed, the trays were soggy, & smashed, & they mixed my wife's seafood meal, with my chicken meal, which I'm allergic to seafood? And then the sauces of both meals were mixed up inside of the one bag that was almost about to burst open, from way to much stuff for one singular thin plastic bag to even hold everything?? It's almost as if they were rushing our order out the door, and not only would it had made more sense to use 2 separate bags for each person's meal, but, also, I'm allergic to seafood, & I ordered chicken, or General Tsos, to be exact. And my chicken meal smells, & tastes like nasty seafood now, & my wife's meal smelled like a mixture of seafood, & chicken?? ???? Plus, the sauce was all over the Styrofoam platters, & all over the 1 bag that everything was squeezed into, what's up with that craziness?? Also, I'll include a picture of the supposed GeneralTsos meal, which barely has any chicken inside of the sauce, & veggies. General Tso's is supposed to be a thick, spicy sauce with some veggies mixed in it. This was all sauce that definitely don't taste like General Tso's, & barely has chicken mixed in with the ridiculous amount of veggies, & messy sauce, which absolutely is not what I've always grown up with4, as General Tso's chicken. The sauce spilled outta the platters, and all over my clean laundry, and floor in my tent? Then my wife's meal was screwed up, as well to. She asked quite a few times, for egg rolls specifically, and instead, received spring rolls, which how does that happen when we were very specific about the order?? This absolutely ruined my dinner literally, and also my wife's dinner, as well too. Also, it costed about $50 bucks, for these nastyass meals, and for that kind of price, the food should not only look amazing, but shouldn't be screwed up period. At that price, it should have been served on golden plates, that were water proof, with how messy everything literally was. And now we're out $50 bucks, and I'm starving now, and I'm seriously disgusted!! I'm resorting to eating the only thing that was dry, which was my crabrangoons, and even my dog won't eat this nasty food, which was the most ignorant situation I've ever encountered in my 42 years on planet earth!! Absolutely don't go to this restaurant, it's disgusting, and they don't package things correctly, make a huge mess, and obviously don't care about their customers at all!! Shut this place down, please! I'm horrified by this experience, and traveled quite a distance, just to find some chinese food! And, this was supposedly the best chinese restaurant in Flagstaff?? We were running late to get home for dinner, So we stopped here for some Chinese cuisine. The people that are rating this place highly are really sheltered. I have had lots better on a street corner in Phoenix. The noodles were thick and heavy. The chicken was rubber like. The spring rolls which were a dollar plus a piece were cold. (You can buy a case of these same spring rolls frozen from shamrock foods 24 in a package for 8-9.00. The kids had soft heavy noodles with rubberized chicken. I think I even seen a Trojan or lifestyles stamp on one of the pieces. But oh well. It was not cheap and I felt as if we were taken advantage of literally Cause the next day we all had terrible diarrhea And cramping. Don't rate places often. I came here with my dad and my son after a day of golf. We are new to town and thought we'd give it a try. What a surprise it was! The atmosphere isn't much so didn't know what to expect. The food was awesome! The sizzling rice soup was the best I've ever had! Actually going again today to get some to go on this rainy day :) We had broccoli beef, kung pao chicken and Hawaii five-0. There are a few Chinese restaurants in Flagstaff and my experience has been about the same - they're all mediocre. Did carry-out here and ordered Sweet/Sour Pork, Moo Goo Gai Pan, Chicken Chow Mein, and Shrimp Fried Rice. The Sweet/Sour Pork was very overcooked; the sauce was good but they really skimped on the pineapple/green bell pepper/onion. The Moo Goo Gai Pan was "flat". There was something missing there or it was just simply cooked out of the dish; the chicken was soggier than it should be. The Chow Mein was OK but not much chicken. The star of the meal was the Shrimp Fried Rice. It was flavorful with some, but not a lot, of shrimp. I haven't eaten inside of this restaurant so I can't comment on the service in the dining room but the carry-out service from the phone order to pick-up was very good. The inside of the restaurant is, to be kind, "dated" and could use a bit of remodeling. I may come back and try different dishes but I don't have high hopes. read more

I only ever get one dish here, and it is soup to raise the dead: the deluxe wonton soup, a rich broth with veggies, wontons, chicken, beef, shrimp-- whatever is in the kitchen. When friends or loved ones or I am under the weather, this soup restores body and soul. I only ever get it to go (because no one should go out to eat when they are not feeling well) and it is always a hit. Got scammed here. Ordered sweet and sour chicken and got broccoli beef AND I ordered a large won ton soup with just 1-2 won tons in cruise ship sized cups. Clearly they didn't hear a word I said over the phone. I think one day i'll supply them with hearing aids after the fact. Chicken also looks, tastes and even feels like some mystery meat out of Tyson's prototype development department. Get other food instead. read more

Had the worst cold. Sinuses so inflamed that my face was swollen and it felt like my eyeballs were gonna pop out of my head. In a last ditch effort to avoid a doctors visit, I decided to pull out the big guns-hot and sour soup. On the advice of a local veteran who had been stationed at various Asian bases, I called Hunan East to place an order. The nicest man took my order over the phone and could clearly tell I was sick. He said he would make sure to add extra hot mustard and chili oil for me to add to the soup. I arrived ten minutes later to pick up the soup and an order of Mu Shu pork and it was just coming out of the kitchen. Everyone I encountered was very kind (and I felt so terrible that I was ready to be annoyed with everyone), added more mustard to my takeout bag, and told me they hoped I felt better soon. I ate the soup with some added mustard and after just a few bites, my head started returning to its normal size. My sense of smell even partially returned and I REALLY enjoyed all the flavors in the soup and pork. Also, their steamed rice was cooked perfectly. Not mushy, not dry. Fluffy and light. Waking up the next day, while not 100% cured, I felt way better and definitely on the upswing. Am I saying they have the cure for the common cold? Not sure. But I do know I felt happier after interacting with their thoughtful staff, and felt better after after eating their food. read more

Good food, but expensive when compared to other Chinese/Asian restaurants. A very clean place, so don't hesitate when you see this in their little strip mall location. Even the bathrooms are maintained. We have been here a number of times as we travel through Flagstaff. Service is "sincere" in a nice way. The wait staff seem to genuinely care that you have chosen their restaurant for a meal. They check on you regularly and an open tea pot lid gets a fresh pot without asking. Portions are OK...not too generous or too skimpy. Styles of food go beyond Hunan style. If you like spice, go Sichuan style or simply ask. Spicy is reasonable, extra spicy will light you up. A decent place for a relaxed, simple dining experience...especially when traveling. read more

The service was great. The decor is very dated but similar to many Asian take out places I've been to. The only downside was the prices. It was really expensive for what you got.
