Love this place! Have been here before but this is my first review. Decor is nice, place is clean, and staff is friendly and tonight very talkative. It was pleasant. They first brought a good sized portion of pickled cabbage which was delightful... ate every bite. I was with my wife and after much debate we ordered the General Tso's chicken, and a plate of the combo fried rice. Both came out quickly, and steaming which is a huge plus in my book. This is a decent takeout Chinese joint. First, the eggrolls here don't seem to be house-rolled. They're the same thing I've had at a dozen other similar Americanized Chinese takeout places ... frozen and bought in bulk. If I'm wrong, so bet it. Either way, the eggrolls here are OK so long as you like heavy ginger and black pepper flavor. The Beef & Snowpeas here are really good. The sauce is mild to my taste, but that's not on the dude doing the cooking. The beef is tender and the veggies are crisp-tender. Eggplant in garlic sauce was meh on my visit. It's pretty obvious that this place is not using Asian eggplant, as the pieces in my dish were peeled of all skin -- and half of them were tough and not edible. Perhaps that was a one-time thing. I don't know how this place has a four out of five star? It's trash garbage food. I eat all types of Asian food and married into an Asian family and tried this place for the first time. It was awful. Nothing had any flavor to it the quality was awful And they couldn't even tell me what went into certain dishes when I asked over the phone. Even the chef said I don't know we just get it on a truck. Came here for lunch and ordered their beef with bell pepper lunch special which came with a soup, entree, rice, and egg roll. Lots of food for just over $10; so a good value in that regard. To me, the food was fine - your standard Americanized Chinese fare. Nothing really stood out as good nor bad; however I will add that the service was very fast and friendly. I've slept on this restaurant for FAR too long, I'm glad enough of my neighbors on Nextdoor recommended this restaurant to me to finally convince me. I guess I just thought the food didn't photograph well but really it looked much better in person than i see in photos. Not I eat food just for photos, but just saying I didn't think it did it Justice after the great experience I had! First off the staff, I didn't get the lady's name that helped me once I got there but she was one of the friendliest restaurant staff I've met, and I've never met her before. I had both my boys with me (young) so I went in to pay and asked if I can pull my car out front so I can then just grab the food. She walked us to my car, and was extremely courteous and cautious with trying to keep my older one from running into traffic (which he wasn't) while I put the other in the car. That sense of humanity just unfortunately became something I never expect from strangers and she just lifted my spirits in a really nice way. The restaurant was a tad smaller inside than I expected but I liked their decoration, their front doors are awesome looking, and overall the restaurant, despite being in a strip center, feels like an authentic individual place instead of the "cubicle" type feel you usually get from strip center restaurants. The place smelled great, it was empty since I picked up food just before 5 PM (again, young kids), and when I tell you the food was piping hot, its an understatement. They packed the containers in a cardboard box to keep it from spilling, and even after I got home the containers were still too hot to the touch to hold. I had to spread the food out on a plate to be able to handle cutting it smaller for the kiddos! I say all this to say that taking it to go it was still very fresh and tasty once we got it home. Anyhoo the food itself, I ordered some "classic" things we try at many Chinese restaurants and we were impressed with all of it. The kiddos loved the lo mein noodles (of course!), all of it was fresh, nice texture, and I enjoyed the flavor of each of the components, much more so together. The General Tso's and Orange chicken looked similar in the containers but the tastes were very different. I got them not spicy for the kids but I would have loved to see how much heat they put in these dishes since its a Szechuan type restaurant. We tasted the heat in the mixed veggies and it was really nice, it packed a punch but not so much it was inedible, just enough to help keep you hydrated! The veggies tasted fresh, not overcooked, nor over sauced. The dumplings were gorgeous, I really enjoyed them, my wife thinks they were a little shy on the flavor, but I enjoyed the texture, especially with the crystal noodles inside! I got distracted by the kids about 4 times while writing this, I hope it makes sense. Overall the food was great, I enjoyed everything we got, look forward to trying it again, new items next time, and I will definitely be coming here often in the future! read more

This is an authentic Chinese restaurant. The food is delicious. The ambience is very quaint. It reminds me of a Chinese restaurant I used to go to when I was a little girl back in the 80s. I love how they have kept the decor the same and have not changed, I think that's what brings character to this place. I made the mistake of trying it again - and again, it was terrible. General's chicken was so overcooked it was like rubber. Very little sauce included. The left out the regular rice, and I got fried rice instead - which was dry and tasteless. They ignored my request for hot oil on the side, as usual. They also ignored my request for plastic ware. Worst Chinese food we've ever had. Soups are all clear like water, have absolutely no stock, seasoning, or flavor at all. They heated up water, mixed in egg whites and thickened it with cornstarch. Overall: I wouldn't bother eating here. I decided to check this place out since a lot of people order it from my job. Worst mistake this week I ordered the mixed vegetables with steamed rice (even though my gut told me to get steamed veggies) and the sauce that was sautéed with the vegetables was unappealing.. the rice was basic. I also got the chicken and shrimp with cashew nuts and fried rice. My boyfriend said it was decent, I thought it was below standard. The meals came with a choice of soup we got wonton soup, which was ok. Also came with choice of egg roll or cheese puff. We chose cheese puffs. That was the best thing to me... the cheese puffs. I've been coming here for 40+ years. I used to come here about once a month until a place came along that has my kind of General Tso's Chicken. They have very good Chinese food, but my favorite is General Tso's Chicken and the way theirs is prepared doesn't appeal to me. I always get the hot shredded pork here, which is excellent. They've begun to suffer because a giant CVS drug store was built directly in front of them, blocking view from the street. So as time passes people forget they're there. Also it has stripped the parking from immediately in front, so you have to park a little distance away. This is all too bad because they're probably the best Chinese restaurant in the area. First of all the lady in the front was very nice to me. The place is a hole in the wall at the end of a store strip next to another restaurant. Ive been here 7 times and the restaurant looks quiet, comfy and relaxing. The food. My wife has the shrimp fried rice and swears its the best. She also gets vegetable dumplings she loves the food. I get the general TSO chicken it's absolutely awesomeness. Called to ask why they added an additional charge (less than $3) to my doordash order and was told it was because I substituted fried rice for steamed rice, which is an upcharge. I have no problem with that, but when I tried to tell her that there was no upcharge on the app, she started to argue with me. When I finally got to say what I was trying to say, I told her that one of the meals did have an upcharge on the app for fried rice, but the second meal did not. I really don't care about a charge of less than 3 dollars, but let me at least speak without being interrupted. I again tried telling her this, but she got mad and told me, "Whatever, contact doordash for refund." Then she told me to never order from Hunan Star again and hung up on me. I called back and asked to speak to the manager and was told that she was the manager. I asked to speak to the owner and was told the owner does not speak English. I've been coming to hunan Star since I was in high school and have never had an issue like this. She's definitely right about one thing. I will never be ordering from there again. Found this gem on yelp while on vacation. Everything was good and we tried a whole sample of things. Fried cream cheese wontons, egg rolls and pan fried dumplings to start. Nothing extra special about the wontons and egg rolls but good. The dumplings were obviously hand made and came out fresh and hot-yum. Then we had the combination fried rice (yum!), sesame chicken and beef with snow peas. The sesame chicken had a great flavor, not overloaded with batter and no gristle. We always call ahead on our way home and the orders typically take 15-20 minutes for pickup. Everything from the hot & sour soup, dumplings down to the chicken & garlic are great. The fried rice is delicious and pairs well with everything. I always opt for an eggroll and the fresh spicy mustard (extremely hot for those looking for mild flavor). Best available Chinese in the area that is not Pei Wei (sorry hardcore authenticity seeking Chinese food people - that is as good as it gets out in this zip code.) The extra charge for brown rice rather than white rice is an annoyance. The kung pao shrimp also comes loaded down with peanuts, like a truckload. Meanwhile the red peppers are spartan and if you know me, I like me some red peppers. The shrimp is acceptable quality, not amazing, but not worth insulting either. The orange chicken is pretty decent. It is unfortunately never spicy no matter how many exclamation points you issue on the order that you want it SPICY!!!!!!!!! But still the sauce is tasty, the onions round out the sauce, the chicken is pretty good quality for a"fast food" kinda' place, and there is a better ratio of red peppers here than in the kung pao shrimp. Take out is always a good option here if you are too lazy to cook. And of course, this place issues a lot of coupons in the junk mailers so find yourself a coupon and come give it a try - it is better than Panda Express. read more

Service was good but should have been cause we were the only ones in there. Ordered sweet and sour delight which included pork, chicken, and shrimp! Pork had no flavor and was dry as dirt as was the chicken. Tasted the shrimp and was afraid to eat it. Our GO-TO place for Chinese cooking in our neighborhood. We order takeout about every two weeks, and it is always HOT, FRESH, DELICIOUS. Walked in there at 1230 on a week day and the place was dead, my first reaction was to run. I thought no people say it's so good on yelp give it a chance. They don't have a soda fountain so I ordered a water I'm not into paying 3 dollars for a can of coke. I ordered the general chicken crispy and corn soup fried rice with an egg roll. The corn soup: so gross, it was egg drop soup with kernels of corn in it. Chicken: it was ok didn't taste anything like general chicken I've ever had, sauce was really salty. The rice everyone raves about is average Chinese fried rice side nothing to talk about. The egg roll was good and that was the only thing I can compliment and the only reason the didn't get 1 Star.
