In town for meetings and craved some Chinese. So many places to choose from but I selected Hunan Village. I was not disappointed. Service was excellent. It was not crowded, but I was there a bit early at about 5:30 midweek. Tons of take out going out the door. Hot & Sour soup was very good and came out immediately. Scallion pancake was 7/10 and came out immediately. Pam fried pork dumplings 9/10. Juicy and light with a delicious sauce and there were many of them. These also came out immediately, which was rather concerning. Impossible to cook them that quickly, ... but they were good. Getting full at this point, I was concerned about being able to eat my entree. Ordered the braised pork belly. Again, a large portion was provided. This was good but I am. It a fan of 5 spice and prefer dishes that don't have it. I was unaware this was used but should have know better. I have made this at home and my recipe calls for it. Overall, I recommend this for fast service and very reasonable prices. Nothing bad to say about the food based on my one experience. I would return. read more

Not sure why they get such good reviews. The place is dirty, what we had was literally terrible, and they don't even say thank you or bring an orange when you pay, or tea when you sit. No tablecloths. Hole in the wall with so little going for it. We are here twice and was just a poor experience both times. I was really craving Singapore Mei Fun and stumbled upon this placed. I did take out and I have to say that the Singapore Mei Fun from this place really satisfied my cravings. The dish had a good balance of veggies, pork, and shrimp. Flavoring was good too and portion is on the larger side so I had leftovers for the next day too. This must be a local favorite! Since I walked it was non-stop in and out orders pick up. It was like every 5min a delivery service pick up. Well, definitely had to try something. Lol The place seem clean and decore was plain, but the service was spot on. I wasn't to hungry, and wanted something light, so I ordered off there vegetarian dishes. They were super busy as it was during a weekday and prime lunch time around Grand Central. They have lunch specials so decided to do that where I got mapo tofu with minced pork. Small Chinese restaurant near Grand Central. Half basement location where you step down a little bit. Dated simple decor. Went on a weekday and the place was empty when we arrived, but was about half full when we left. Was hot that day and they had floor fans to help the struggling AC. The restaurant name indicates Hunan or Xiang cuisine, but the menu has a bunch of Szechuan stuff plus some Americanized Chinese food favorites. We stuck to the Hunan/Szechuan part of the menu. Got 3 dishes for the 2 of us. Got the lamb with red peppers, stir fried pork stomach and also stir fried peppers. The food was a little spicy but not super spicy. The meat was delicious, tender and absorbed a lot of the flavor. Same with the tofu skin which is a nice meat substitute for vegetarians. The cabbage added a nice textural contrast which was great. The flavors were robust, and the medium heat packed a punch. I might go one level lower as in my older age too spicy doesn't agree with me as much. The portion size was generous, making it perfect for sharing or enjoying leftovers. One downside was they forgot my rice and with that level heat, I wanted something to help tame it. I used to order from here almost every week when I lived in the area. They specialize in Hunan & Sichuan regional dishes - cuisines known for their spice profiles and heavy flavor - in addition to standard Chinese/Cantonese fare. The spicy dry pot is something I order frequently as it's quite good here and you get to pick your own ingredients from a varied selection of meats & veggies. The fatty beef is great, and they even have exotic duck blood. I recommend ordering from the house specials section for authentic Chinese selections. I would've loved to give this place a 5 star review, but the only reason I docked a star was because half my lotus root portion seemed spoiled with black dots, I just threw that part out and carried on eating, but wish they noticed on their own and didn't put it in my dish.
