Came to Kanpai for a double date and I was very very pleasantly surprised at the level of fish quality of their sushi! Very cute location kind of isolated from everything else. Service was great! They have random weekly deals that were ok. FOOD: - Gyoza: very standard, would recommend if you just really like gyoza. I tend never to order them because I always feel like they taste the same as store bought frozen ones. - Stuffed avocado: I loved this!! I always like avocado but this was just a very yummy creamy appetizer. Kind of like a jalepeno popper but creamier - Party Boat: we couldn't decide on what to get so we ended up sharing this between the 4 of us and it was amazing! The rolls it comes with usually weren't the ones we wanted but we were able to switch them for rolls that were the same price on the menu! Their sashimi cuts were THICK and very fresh tasting. Pricewise was on the higher end but I think it was absolutely worth it! Would def come back to get their sushi again.

This updated review is for the takeout I recently got. Super easy to order online. The food was ready in a very timely manner. They only do takeout (maybe unless you try another delivery service) but we live close enough so walking over isn't an issue. The one thing I'd HIGHLY RECOMMEND and honestly might get exclusively from now on is the fried avocado appetizer! It's stuffed with seafood and is truly perfection. Highly recommend!!!

I tried kamakaze and shared the nigiri dinner with my friends. The nigiri dinner came with soup, salad, spicy tuna roll, and 9 pieces of chef's choice nigiri. To be honest, I don't like spicy tuna. It tasted different from other sushi restaurants, much spicier than usual. However, I could tell that all the fish were of high quality. Overall, my experience here was perfect

I walked into this place expecting greatness. Besides it being sparsely occupied, the atmosphere and music were on point. Sat at the bar ready to go: the service from Maxwell was legit. But then comes the but... The food. So I mean, read my reviews. I eat a lot of sushi, so I feel like I should be your trusted arbitrator of all things raw, like Ol' DB. When I see negri served a la carte, I'm like, "Okay, let's go for some bomb sushi!" However, I must admit that this place fell short in terms of flavor and quality. Let's just say it was quite average. I've had better rolls from Whole Foods that were both cheaper and higher in quality. With the exception of the hamachi, everything else was lacking. The fish quality was comparable to what you'd find at a sushi belt restaurant. Yeah, I said it. Man, I really wanted this place to be amazing, but unfortunately, it left me feeling underwhelmed with mediocre sushi. Even the soy wasn't good. Like how do you mess yo soy sauce? Don't give it a try haha. There are much better places close by.

Got a last minute reservation on a Saturday night. Place was busy and service a little slow, but it gave us time to enjoy a few Kirin. Ordered the "Love Boat" for two. Assorted sashimi, nigiri and choice of two rolls. Food quality was great!

3 diners - a large assortment of maki and nigiri. 5 stars - Food: cut, flavor, quality, size, freshness. 4 stars - Service. A bit on the slow/negligent side, but okay. Didn't know the menu as much as I would expect. 3 stars - pricing. Nigiri was per piece and seemed expensive by other comparisons who usually do a two-piece order for about 25% price increase. 0 stars - Service/food prep. What turned out to be a 2-hour dinner was started by the longest wait time for food to be delivered. To my knowledge (seen) there was only one chef. Wasabi & Screaming Tuna have multiple. WAY too long. And the restaurant was not crowded. 0 stars - a menu listing snow crab on many items ... but when asked and confirmed ... wasn't ... but was (imitation) Krab or pollock which usually contain wheat. As Celiacs (GF) this is paramount. AND, the soft shell crab was said to be GF, but was deep fried in cross contaminated oil !! Wrong, wrong, wrong. 0 stars - Asked for two different cocktail menu item drinks. Neither were available when ordered, (bar was out of xxxx) etc, etc.

I am not originally from the Milwaukee area and have only been here for 3 years or so total. I have tried a lot of the sushi places in the area. I also have a few friends and family members that love sushi as much as I do. Between all of us I thought we pretty much had all of the sushi places in the Milwaukee metro area covered. When a supervisor at my work told me about this place, I have to admit I was pretty skeptical. I had never even heard of it or had any of my friends or family say anything about it. I have to admit I am pretty mind blown as I sit here writing this review. The place I thought was "the best sushi place" in the Milwaukee area has been topped by this place! I arrived on a Monday right at 5:00 PM, so it was not very busy. My server, Jackie, was very friendly and attentive. I didn't get a chance to see the whole restaurant as I was seated in a booth up front. The front area/bar area is very nice and I could see where this would be a great location to hang out with friends or even for a nice date. I ordered 3 rolls: rainbow, spicy salmon and spider. Everything was delicious! The freshness of the fish was outstanding! I also liked how the wasabi was blended with a bit more moisture in it so it easily dissolved into my dish of soy sauce. I have eaten at dozens and dozens of sushi places across the country and this is the first place I have seen do this! I will definitely be back to check out the whole restaurant and to enjoy the incredible sushi here!

We had the Oyster Shooter (which had a nice bite), Stuffed Avocado (which was absolutely amazing), Menage a Trois, Dragons Den, Boss, Blue Fin Nagiri Atoro, Truffle Parmesan Akimi (an interesting and savory blend of flavors) and Vegetable Udon. All were extremely delicious, and the presentation was beautiful. Our reservation was taken without hassle, and followed up with a confirmation text. We were seated in a well lit booth near the sushi bar, which is always a showpiece. Unfortunately, there was no bartender the night we were there, and they were down a host. This meant the owner and on-site staff had to work extra hard to service the guests. While there was a wait for drink and food, the quality of what we had was worth the wait. I will definitely be going back to eat my fill of sushi!

I love Kanpai, they have a great variety of sushi and I love that their menu really spells out the dishes so you know exactly what to get. Their prices are a bit higher than other local sushi restaurants but definitely still worth the price. We felt that they took great measures to keep their staff and customers safe among the pandemic. Had a great time and will be happy to return again.

YUM! And oh so welcoming. The minute I walked in the door with my date, I was greeted with hellos and welcomes from the sushi chef and our server Jackie. Jackie was wonderful and made our experience oh so special. We ordered a few appetizers (edamame, hamachi ponzu which I highly recommend!) to start. Followed by a couple of rolls. The space was great!

Left to right: Side salad w/ginger dressing; 1/2 order of the Green Bay roll; Fried gyoza
    Clare O.

I'm crazy about Kanpai's salads. I could eat one of these every day of my life. First of all, they are huge for the price, and the ginger dressing is to die for. The ingredients are always fresh, and the addition of avocado to the salad is a nice contrast to the crunchy greens, cucumbers and cherry tomatoes. The salad is so big it is about two meals worth of salad. 100% worth it. My other go-to order from Kanpai is their friend gyoza. It's a never-fail app that I absolutely love- always fresh, crunchy on the outside and warm and filling on the inside. I always get an order of gyoza with my salads if I'm feeling extra hungry, and they make the perfect complimentary meal together. The sushi- in the past, I've never had a Kanpai roll let me down, so I was a bit disappointed in the Green Bay roll. I got half an order (4 pieces for $8). I was willing to pay that for a half order of a special roll, but would not do it again with the GB roll. The Green Bay roll is supposed to be really creamy, but it tasted more like it was just doused in mayo and no other flavors were added to it. I usually don't throw rolls away, but this one did not get finished. May have been fluke, but I likely will not be ordering that one again. Overall, Kanpai is almost always consistent with their food, which is tasty, fresh and totally worth it!

Amazing experience at Kanpai! Delicious vegetable gyoza and edamame to start. Ordered the loveboat for two which was amazing, lots of nigiri and sashimi with two fun rolls. Soup and salad included. Food took slightly longer than expected so they gave us an extra carafe of sake on the house - our waitress was so kind and attentive. Highly recommend!

We came in for downtown dining and boy was that a good deal. Lots of food for $35. We knew that we probably wouldn't be frequenting this place, so we opted to get two different entrees to split and ordered two extra rolls outside of the DD menu. The bad: every roll is so saucy except for the Trio roll. Each of those rolls had an element that I hated/took over the flavor, which made the rolls unappealing (cilantro, Serrano pepper). I just took out the elements that I didn't like and they made the rolls 100x better. Prices are obnoxiously expensive. $5-7 per sashimi/nigiri roll?! No. Even the fried gyoza was too saucy. The Thai Chili sauce was just too much. We scrapped a lot of it off, plus it just overpowered the flavor of the pork filling. So that app was a huge miss for us and would not recommend it. Why the cream cheese?! Cream cheese has no place with sushi. The good: the fish was absolutely delicious. For being in the Midwest, I was pretty impressed with the fish itself. I got Buri Toro and Sake nigiri; absolutely delicious. If it weren't for the price, I would have got more. These two pieces and the Trio roll were the best parts of this meal. Highly recommend those rolls. The fish is really what makes sushi, sushi. The rest is just fluff. And although I can appreciate an inventive roll, these just didn't stand out to me and I wouldn't get them again. The rolls that came with the DD menu were the Trio Roll, the Boss roll and the Kamikaze roll. Trio was delicious, Boss roll was okay and the Kamikaze roll was overpowered by the Serrano pepper. I would probably do DD again, but choose the sashimi/nigiri option. The two extra rolls we ordered were the Double Tuna and the Ménage a Trois. The Doubke Tuna would be so good without the crap ton of cilantro! Why does a roll need that much cilantro. For me it was too much so I took it all out and then enjoyed the roll. Ménage roll was okay, not worth the $17 it cost. Overall experience was good. Service was friendly. Seating was so awesome and private. Like I said, Downtown Dining is such a good deal from this place and I think we'd go back for this, but probably won't be back otherwise.

That said, I'd likely get reservations were I to stop by again. They're a bustling little spot and saw several groups who weren't able to get a table without reservations while we were there. Where we sat at the bar, we were able to see the kitchen and our food (and others) begin prepared which was fun to see (and also nice from a transparency standpoint). Let me tell you--they are hustling in that kitchen! I began with a berry smash whiskey cocktail which was refreshing and fantastic. For my dinner, I got the bbq salmon which came with a salad to start and rice and asparagus on the side. Everything was fresh and flavorful. The only small note I had was I would have loved more asparagus but honestly, I could probably ask for a side of that next time to amp up the veggies. The service was lovely and the prices were reasonable. Get to it!

But luckily my husband quickly checked well before we were served and saw there were reservations available online, so he booked us one on the spot. We were then given two excuses, one by the bartender and a different one by the host as to why they couldn't honor the reservation: (1) there were no tables available for us (note the place was half empty, but we supposed maybe there were lots of reservations coming later--nope, the place was still half full by the time we left); (2) we had to make the reservations 30-40 minutes in advance and we didn't do that so even though we did have a reservation, they couldn't honor it because we made it too soon to the reservation time (WOW--complete BS). We were peeved but decided we should just enjoy our dinner. BUT as we were finishing up, about 5 couples came in WITHOUT a reservation and both the host and the bartender gave each couple the option to either sit at the bar or at a table. When I confronted the bartender about it, she claimed "they weren't supposed to do that." WHAT?! She literally just offered a couple a table without a reservation. What do you mean?! It was insulting. Anyway, we will absolutely NEVER come back here. The tip we left was solely for the kitchen staff who were hard at work and doing an honest job. Bartender and hosts are discriminatory and awful. Do NOT recommend if you are looking to be treated with respect. Would give zero stars if that were an option.

I completely agree that this isn't authentic chinese food, but approachable fusion that tries to keep it truthful to the flavors and presentation. The highlight of the meal was the peking duck, which they only have about 2 orders of a night. We snagged it immediately when we sat down and it can easily feed 4 people with the sides. The duck was juicy and cut into thick pieces, so it was more of a steak rather than a bao style that I am used to. Nevertheless, it was delicious and even warmed up well the next day. The green onion wraps were...strange in my opinion. They fell apart easily and didn't have the best flavor that complemented the duck. Overall, I would come back for the duck itself, but everything else was average or extra salty. Service was great and the staff are very attentive. Happy eating!

The vibe: It was packed at 7:15 PM on a Sunday, and they held firmly to our reservation time--which is understandable given the crowd. We took a nice stroll while waiting, so no harm done. Once seated, the service was excellent--attentive, prompt, and professional. The food: This is clearly high-end Americanized Chinese food, not authentic regional cuisine. If you go in expecting that, you'll have a better experience. The menu reads like a "greatest hits" collection--familiar dishes done with nicer ingredients and presentation. What worked well: Smashed Cucumber - A strong start. The cilantro and bean sprouts were exceptionally fresh, and the peanut finish added nice depth, though the sauce leaned a bit salty for my taste. Service and atmosphere - polished and efficient. What fell short for me: Wonton Soup - The wrappers were thicker than I prefer; I like a more delicate, translucent skin. The leek-based broth was pleasant, though. Salt & Pepper Cod - The seasoning was good, but the cod pieces were too thick, so the center remained bland. Halving the thickness would improve the texture. Mongolian Beef - Tender meat, but I wanted thicker cuts and larger onion pieces for more bite. It leaned a bit soggy for my preference. Rice Cake with Pork Belly - Pork belly was well-executed, but too many rice cakes overwhelmed the dish. The flavor leaned Korean (almost kimchi-like), which felt like a departure from the rest of the menu. Beef Chow Fun - Felt repetitive, using the same thin-sliced beef and bean sprouts as other dishes. I'd prefer charred broad rice noodlesthat are thin. These rice sticks were wide and thick,so like the cod, the center of the rice sticks were bland. I also preferred more eggs in this dish for variety. The overall pattern: Many dishes share similar ingredients and sauce profiles, which makes sense for a busy kitchen but does reduce variety across the meal. Bottom line: If you're looking for authentic, nuanced Chinese cooking, this probably isn't your spot. But if you want a polished, upscale version of familiar Chinese-American favorites in a great location, with reliable service, Dan Dan delivers that well. I personally wouldn't return, but I can see why it's popular--especially for the crowd that wants comfort food in a nicer setting.

She was able to describe how the various entries are constructed and the ingredients included. She also talked intelligently about the noodles that are made "in house" and what entries fit best with which noodles. We started with hot White tea and the shrimp tempura appetizer. The White Tea was very good, especially on this cold afternoon. (5 stars). The shrimp tempura was just okay. The breading was a bit oily and did not adhere to the shrimp. (2 1/2 Stars). I ordered the seafood Ramen and loved the flavor and the freshness of the ingredients. The Scallops were extremely good, great taste, and cooked just right. (5 Stars). My son ordered the Curry Ramen and thought it was good, but he felt that the jalapeno was a bit overpowering. (4 Stars). The noodles were very very good. Great ambiance, excellent service and a good variety menu. I'll be back for sure.

Our server was soo nice and on top of it!! There's super cute decor and art on the walls. Loved it! They have anime playing on 3 different tvs! We tried their house sale and it was good. We were there during happy hour so we took advantage of the buy one get one app 1/2 price off. We had the drunken mussels and birria bao. I wasn't too impressed with the birria bao, but loved the mussels!!! I had kimchi ramen and the boyfriend had seafood ramen. We both ate it all up it was so yummy!! I can't complain about a bit of it. It's a large portion so you can take some home too!! We added the black garlic but I wasn't impressed and found it tasting and feeling like just charred garlic instead of actual black garlic or fermented garlic. I guess I wasn't sure what to expect but I wouldn't add it again. Lastly we did get to try the Fire sushi roll and this was the absolute highlight of the meal for me! I loved it so much I had to bring another roll home with me! I couldn't get enough!!! i would visit this place again. It was fun, delicious and chill.

Our bartender was incredibly friendly, charismatic, and genuinely passionate about the menu. He took the time to explain dishes, offered thoughtful recommendations, and made the entire experience even more enjoyable. Every dish we ordered was outstanding. The deviled eggs were easily our favorite and are an absolute must-order. We also loved the flatbread with fiddleheads, which featured a delicious curry-inspired flavor that reminded us of an Indian dish. My husband couldn't stop talking about the bread pudding and said it was one of the best desserts he's had. Everything we tried was beautifully prepared and full of flavor. If we lived in Milwaukee, Odd Duck would absolutely become one of our regular spots. We can't wait to come back the next time we're in town.

Our server, Adam, was quick and attentive. He was funny, suggested items for us to try, and was very tentative of our friend's food allergy. We started the night with a few drinks; #39 non-alcoholic Paloma, #129 non-alcoholic sbagiato, and #33 Sherry Pear-Y. All of which were absolutely amazing! Then we ordered the Chili Crisp Deviled Eggs (comes with two pieces), Crispy Thai-Style Oyster Mushrooms, Cappelletti, Slow-braised Bison Cheek, Cha Ca La Vong (Catfish), and the Wood-fired Bavette Steak. Where do I begin? First off, everything was fantastic! Delicious, creative, and memorable. Some dishes even had us ordering seconds! First the Chili Crisp Deviled Eggs: so creamy! We ended up ordering another plate of them (four orders) because one wasn't enough for the four of us. The Crispy Thai-Style Oyster Mushroom: insanely seasoned! It was crispy and the kick of the Thai chili peppers, made it our tables favorite (we ordered another plate of this)! The bits of crunch rice mixed in was also a pleasant surprise. The bits of green beans and cucumber was a nice way to cool the kick of the spices. The Slow-braised Bison Cheek: It was very interesting. Very soft and when paired with the polenta cake, mozzarella, and carrot, it tasted amazing. Cha Ca La Vong (Catfish): Also very interesting. It tastes very similar to a Vietnamese catfish soup! The pineapple fish sauce paired amazing with the glass noodles. The only complaint I have about this dish, was that the glass noodles weren't fully cooked, so they were a bit hard. The Wood-fired Bavette Steak: My god, this was amazing! It was perfectly cooked, the dark chocolate bordelaise paired with the mushrooms and steak was incredible. Like I said, everything was amazing! Our table was blown away with the creativity and quality of the food. The service was amazing, everyone was very sweet and helpful. The atmosphere was lovely and quirky. It was fun spotting all the duck decorations. Honestly, cannot rave enough about this place, I look forward to the next time I visit!
