After having driven past Kawa (about a thousand times), and telling my husband (about a thousand times) how I want to go there, I finally made it in. Too bad for him though because I ended up going with a friend ;) To echo the many other reviews here, the sushi here is realllll good. And the presentation? Equally as good. My friend and I popped in for an early dinner on a Monday night. The place was surprisingly busy for a Monday. We decided to sit inside which had a low key atmosphere. In quick succession came our glasses of chilled white wine, much to our enjoyment, and then our sushi platter! Let me tell ya, we had a tough time deciding because this menu is stacked. In the end we chose the crunch dragon roll (spicy tuna), amazing roll (shrimp tempura), and scorpion king (tempura soft shell crab). They were all delightful, but I think my fave was the dragon roll. I'm a sucker for tuna. These rolls came out on a decorated platter, with some stacked on top of eachother, and some kind dry-ice situation giving a smoke effect. So fun! Our neighboring table even noted they were impressed. I shall return. And maybe invite the hubby next time, lol!

Best sushi in the area! The fish is so fresh! Their takeout is phenomenal! One of our favorite spots!

perfect food!!!The service was excellent. The server is very friendly and nice to us. Very patient gyoza was excellent crispy and well cooked inside! The sauce was very tangy and sour with a bit of sweetness.

If you haven't tried Kawa Japanese Restaurant et, go right now. we had a great team lunch their. The portions are great and all the food was delicious! As someone who doesn't eat sushi but when everyone else at work/in the friend group does this provides the best of both worlds. I had the Chicken Teriyaki lunch entree which came with a flavorful salad! My coworkers got to enjoy all the sushi.

We play trivia at the Third Street Market here and there and I keep getting the ramen. One of these times, I should try something else since there are so many interesting food choices. But I'm a big ramen fan who seldom gets it, so to Kawa I go every time. It's just really dependably tasty. The portion is good for a dinner. Nice fresh flavors. Have always found the staff to be friendly and reasonably speedy too. I just got the edamame as a side for the first time and that was good too. All in all, nice reliable place to get your ramen fix!

This was my first time. I ordered shrimp tempura. It came quickly. I hadn't time to drink my soup or eat my salad. So. No wasabi. Had to call him over. He brought it and regular soy sauce. No ginger. Had to call him over again. Got ginger. Ok. The shrimp was excellent. The veggies I think had cement powder as part of the coating. Hard!!!!! The broccoli was Mushy and hard. Yuck. Usually Japanese restaurants have a different soy sauce.....one that is not so thick to add ginger and wasabi to it. Not the case. I loved the soup. I'd never really considered the soup to be tasty but Kawa's was delicious. I think the chef needs to check his tempura flower. Eliminate the cement.

We were greeted promptly and seated. I was very impressed with the hot house sake of choice quality but also the large quantity of high quality sake choices in the menu. My sashimi regular order exceeded my expectation with a presentation prepared for an emperor. Highly recommended Japanese restaurant!

So yummy! We enjoyed all of the food we ordered. We started with the dynamite shrimp. Came out hot and crispy! Then we had 3 rolls- California, Amazing, and Godzilla. We would order this all again. It was our first time dining in and it had a casual vibe in the restaurant. Service was good and they took note of my peanut allergy. We will definitely be back. Best sushi in the North Shore!

Enjoyed the excellent service here. Food wise, definitely not the best Japanese food that I've had, but a decent option in the neighborhood. The shrimp tempura is my favorite - so golden, crispy, light-breaded on the outside and meaty on the inside. The presentation and quality of sushis are good too. For the soba noodles, I was expecting the dark green / brown wheat noodles but they turned out to look & taste regular noodles. So that is a mystery to me. The soup w seasoning is good though.

Since I've moved to Whitefish Bay and discovered this sushi place is the relative to the Kawa downtown, I discovered new items that I enjoyed and didn't realize they had. My go to: Tuna tartar Tuna Dumpling Ninja roll Salmon sushi Dynamite shrimp The dynamite shrimp, although delicious and spicy, it's an extremely small portion. The tuna tartar and tuna dumpling are so delicious. Service is friendly. I love to frequent this place.

Decided to check out this sushi place and I was quite surprised. The sushi was exceptionally fresh, the rolls were absolutely delicious. Service was outstanding. The place is small but cozy. Definitely recommend this place.

Especially the sushi rolls. This time I ordered the Amazing roll, Phoenix roll and Edo roll. All 8 pieces. Admittedly, it was a little too much for one sitting, but everything still tasted great the next day at home for lunch. Everything was very fresh, and the flavors were in perfect combination. This place is nice and spacious, and a great place to sample sushi choices either for lunch or dinner. Again, service can be hit or miss. The only reason…read morethis review will not be longer is that I have eaten my weight in exquisite hibachi goodness and drank my kid's weight in Kirin Ichihan. The food was great, beginning with our appetizers and ending with our hibachi chef who brought his A-game (and a thrilling little sake squirter- naughty naughty!). The father of the family next to me notably took two tries to catch his airborne broccoli while his wife waved off the attempt from the chef entirely, but I (unlike past reviewers) would never dock a stable for its individual horses. Their younger kid did ask her parents if "they showered together" right as the hibachi chef came out- that rocked. Our daughter got a kick out of the whole situation, although the initial fire start did scare the bejeezus out of her. She particularly loved the egg in the hat trick. The ambiance? Great, totally happening even for a 6pm reservation on a Saturday night. The food? Great, and ample. We brought three boxes home. The staff? Practically family. Will I be bringing the family back? Yes. Did it take a little bit of time for my second drink to come? Yes, but you know what, that was probably for the best. Long live Samurai

To start off, I ordered plum wine, which of course was delicious. For our appetizer we ordered the pan fried gyoza. It was so light and airy absolutely delicious. Now for the main course, I went with the pineapple fried rice with chicken. I have to say this is the best pineapple fried rice I have had from any Thai restaurant. The curry powder is strong here, which is my favorite. It came with a side of Thai chili sauce which was definitely a unique surprise, but I absolutely loved it. It complimented the dish very well. My boyfriend went with the pad Thai. It was also absolutely delicious. He ate the whole thing. Now I will say I didn't finish my dish and took the rest home however it seems the waiter took offense and asked me if there was something wrong with the fried rice! I was definitely shocked and I said no it was absolutely delicious, but I just can't finish it. It was definitely a awkward moment to be asked that especially in front of other people in the restaurant. I certainly was not complaining about anything. I was thoroughly enjoying my meal. So yes, I was a little disappointed by that interaction and hoping if other people don't finish their meals that they're going to be questioned. If I didn't like my meal, I wouldn't be asking for her to go box that's for sure. I'm not knocking any stars for that of course.... I had a great time. We enjoyed our food and drinks. The waiter was working very hard. It started getting really busy and he was apologizing for the delay because it did take a while for our food to come out. We will definitely be returning, and I am excited to try another dish off their menu.

We all got drinks, for 5 people: it was 165, which from my experience is pretty good. The meal started on shaky ground with the tuna tataki. Dry and somewhat fishy, I had no desire to have more than one piece. The ponzu sauce also did not have the flavorful, citrusy tartness that could have saved this dish. Thankfully, things did get better. The Spanish grasshopper roll was flavorful, much more fresh tasting, and had a nice level of heat. The dragon roll and the crazy roll were also decent but not amazing. Thankfully, the tataki set the bar pretty low for everything else. Service was also decent in that our server was friendly but somewhat forgetful and main courses didn't quite arrive together leaving some to stare at their food while others waited for theirs. This was not a major issue, though, and only helps to explain why this was just an average experience. One final note was how unusually dark the restaurant was with very dark paint-chipped walls. Additionally, the walk to the restrooms took me past a small graveyard of broken and unused chairs. The spiral bound menus were all in various levels of disrepair. The only reason I mention these things is because there's a certain level of attention to small details that can make or break my level of comfort in eating sushi at any particular restaurant. Pricing was shockingly inexpensive for the amount of food. Unsurprisingly, a service charge was added since our group was large - but I was shocked that it was only 15% - which I have never seen. We all made sure to add to the gratuity reflective of our appreciation for the hard work of our server. Overall, not fantastic - but definitely not the worst sushi place I have been. Not sure I have a strong desire to give this one another try, though.
