I originally gave KAWA on Silver Spring 3 stars, but after a recent take-out order, it's a solid 5 stars! My husband and I ordered on a Monday (love that they're open then!), and everything was fresh and delicious. The Dragon Roll was my favorite, the salmon sushi was great, and my husband really liked the Tuna Roll. Everything was packed well, too. We'll definitely be ordering again soon! read more

After having driven past Kawa (about a thousand times), and telling my husband (about a thousand times) how I want to go there, I finally made it in. Too bad for him though because I ended up going with a friend ;) To echo the many other reviews here, the sushi here is realllll good. And the presentation? Equally as good. My friend and I popped in for an early dinner on a Monday night. The place was surprisingly busy for a Monday. We decided to sit inside which had a low key atmosphere. In quick succession came our glasses of chilled white wine, much to our enjoyment, and then our sushi platter! Let me tell ya, we had a tough time deciding because this menu is stacked. In the end we chose the crunch dragon roll (spicy tuna), amazing roll (shrimp tempura), and scorpion king (tempura soft shell crab). They were all delightful, but I think my fave was the dragon roll. I'm a sucker for tuna. These rolls came out on a decorated platter, with some stacked on top of eachother, and some kind dry-ice situation giving a smoke effect. So fun! Our neighboring table even noted they were impressed. I shall return. And maybe invite the hubby next time, lol! read more

Had to call him over again. Got ginger. Ok. The shrimp was excellent. The veggies I think had cement powder as part of the coating. Hard!!!!! The broccoli was Mushy and hard. Yuck. Usually Japanese restaurants have a different soy sauce.....one that is not so thick to add ginger and wasabi to it. Not the case. I loved the soup. Since I've moved to Whitefish Bay and discovered this sushi place is the relative to the Kawa downtown, I discovered new items that I enjoyed and didn't realize they had. My go to: Tuna tartar Tuna Dumpling Ninja roll Salmon sushi Dynamite shrimp The dynamite shrimp, although delicious and spicy, it's an extremely small portion. The shrimp tempura was good, but there were more tempura vegetables on the plate than the shrimp (2 pieces). Service was fine. Nothing bad. Nothing over the top. The staffs are extremely nice and accommodating since some of us couldn't order everything all at once and kept asking for something new each time our waiter came over to check on us. Lol Food was great. However the portion is quite small compared to other sushi places. We order the sashimi appetizer and it comes with 7pcs of chefs choice. The pieces are half the size of a normal cut. For $9 and the cut/portion, I considered it over priced. Everything else was great. The udon noodles had a texture consistency of a pad thai dish, which was a bit weird. No broth. (We thought it would be a soup like noodle dish) It is a nice place to grab some appetizers and catch up with friends. Each meal came with a small serving of rice and a miso soup. The soup was no good to me, it smelled fishy yet didn't taste fishy, an odd combo that I couldn't get past. The rice, however, was quite good. There was just a little too little of it. Speaking of too little, I could say the same for the teriyaki sauce that came with the steak. This is our go to sushi restaurant in the milwaukee area. It really has some delicious fish, their nigiri is fresh and tasty. Their rolls are really well done, especially the tuna avocado maki. I tend to order the more simple Rolls, and kawa really delivers on fresh and tasty flavors. The service in the restaurant itself is quick and polite, although we usually end up ordering for take out. They have a sushi bar that has probably 8 seats and I decided to sit there and enjoy the sushi & California roll combo with a $2 corona. The restaurant is on a corner and easy to find. Parking is in back, the entrance is in the front. I came around 5:30pm with a couple of co-workers and the place was nearly empty. It's clean, modern, with lots of tiles. The entryway was all tiles, reminded me of a bathroom. Service was a bit odd. She came and asked for our drink order 30 seconds after seating us. Then stood and stared until we asked for more time, twice. Other then that she was really quick about removing plates. Not the friendliest, but efficient. The menu had lots of single items. I was surprised they didn't have any happy hour at all, and no single person dinner combos. I ordered a sake flight, and for dinner we shared the yellowtail jalapeño, and a sushi boat that came with miso soup and a salad with ginger dressing. The flight was a great idea. The coconut infused sake was phenomenal. Especially to a coconut freak like me. Soup and salad were your typical starters for a Japanese place. The presentation on the sushi was very nice. All of the fish were fresh, buttery, melt in your mouth good. I really enjoyed the yellowtail, the jalapeño was bright green, and just barely ripe adding an extra kick of spice, excellent. The rice on the sushi and maki rolls were a bit hard and crunchy. We didn't care for that. The sushi chefs tended to scream out orders, in not a particularly endearing way, so that was distracting. It's a decent place for sushi, and prices won't empty your wallet. If I'm in the area and have another sushi craving I'd return here if there was nowhere else new to try. read more
