We ordered ahi as an appetizer. It came with 8 tiny slices, serve on a little plate, no garnish.. nothing. There was no flavor. That was a waste on money. I ordered my prime rib medium, it came out well done. Mash potatoes and vegetables had no flavor. It needed salt and seasoning. I'm not one to use salt but... For this dinner I had to. I came here for dinner with my family a few weeks ago, and it was DELICIOUS! I am not a steak person myself (I promise I'm not crazy), but my brother was more than pleased with his New York strip. I got a delicious pasta dish, and some artichoke dip. I loved the ambiance and the dim lighting. Very romantic, and also very personal. Reminded me of nursing home food!!! I have always loved a great steak! On the other hand my Son has never cared much for steak! So he asked the Server, Shelly, the different ways steak is cooked? She looked dumb founded!!! Like she was at a loss for words. So I proceed to explain how steak can be cooked!!! Really!!! This is the only customer that has asked you in the 20 years you have worked there??? This was your opportunity to shine!!! Or not!!! Then after dinner she asked if we would like to see the dessert tray? My Son says what do you have? She says do you want to she the dessert tray??? I'm sorry but when he asked what do you have? You say I will be back and show you the dessert tray!!! Really!!! So she brings his dessert which he chose Turtle Cheesecake! Then she drips water on it as she fills our glasses!!! I will say when we have gone here before the service and food were excellent! And I have told everyone!!! Truly when I have a Server with no desire to serve you, it ruins the meal. I will also say that the table side salad bar was great!!! My salad and that wonderful bread was the hit of the night!!! Oh and the dessert was sub par! It tasted like it had been sitting on a plate for a few hours. The Carmel was so hard my Son dug it off the plate!!! I think he almost needed a chisel! He liked it though!!! Anyway the meal was my Son's Treat! $60 for dinner $10 for a tip!!! $70 Total out the door!!! However I don't believe I could have left her $10!!! And my first job was waitressing!!! This has been an old standby for a long time. If you want a non-rushed dining experience and a pretty good steak at a not crazy expensive price - this is a great place to go. The service is decent, nothing stellar but nothing wrong with it either. The décor and ambiance are a bit dated, but that's also part of the charm. Rumor has it that this place is built on top of an old cemetery and is haunted --- the built on a cemetery part is true, but they've stopped playing up the "haunted" part. (Years ago you could actually see the fishing line connected to a chandelier that would occasionally sway unexpectedly.) With good food, in a comfortable atmosphere, you really can't go wrong at the Hunter. read more

The two steaks we ordered (filet and sirloin) were both excellent. Cooked to perfection, tender, juicy, etc. The table side salad is a terrific way of presenting their salad and it was very good. However, the vegetable medley was unsightly, overcooked and oh so boring. The baked potato appeared to have been microwaved and left to sit around for awhile before serving. It was not very good and almost inedible. The onion rings tasted like they came from a fast food place and the breading was yuck. We love Hunter's. It is our go to restaurant when we have family in town. The food is consistently excellent, as is the service. One of our favorite things is the salad bar, which comes to your table. My husband is a big fan of the filet with a baked potato. I like the shrimp scampi linguini. The retro vibe is a plus for us. I was introduced to this "locals" steakhouse by a former boss and try to hit it up when traveling to or from San Diego. The steak here is consistently good and has been for years. The staff is friendly and won't steer you wrong if you don't know what to order. Very casual and no frills, you can get an extremely well prepared steak and all the fixings here for a very affordable price. Order the sauteed mushroom appetizer as it's OMG good. I don't think they charge for corkage here so feel free to bring your own favorite reds as well (I could be wrong cuz my former boss was a regular here). The location of this place is sort of tricky so be sure to plan your route ahead of time and get the full value of your GPS if u got one. Reservations are helpful but not needed. read more

Restaurant Week Review of four stars, could be 3 or 3.5 for a normal experience. The value and amount of food is enough for a family of at least 4 for a $20/pp restaurant week menu. You can choose an appetizer, entree(which comes with two sides and bread), and dessert. I liked the prime rib a lot, which is marketed as the best in the county. My girlfriend liked the Salmon also. The salad was cool because they brought the salad bar to your table to choose all your favorite toppings. Things that I didn't like as much were the veggies and the potato skins. Overall of course Hunter doesn't compare to the premium steakhouses, but it is a good option for RW, especially if you want a much more casual, cheaper experience. read more

Was pleasantly surprised. We don't go to the Ruths Chris restaurants as they are just too pricey, but rather try and find smaller restaurants with good steaks at affordable prices. We have liked the steak at Outback (although it has been hit or miss, depending on the location). I had a sirloin at Hunters, and my husband who is a chef and has been working in a steakhouse/grille for 8 years - said it was the best sirloin he has had (and he is not a sirloin fan). I love having a good steakhouse right in my backyard. I've eaten here several times with a variety of different people and we've always had a great time. The food is always good along with service. I've never had a bad meal here and is always on the list when choosing a restaurant for a night out. You can make a reservation or take a chance down in the lounge for the first come first serve. Went here last night, my husband and I both just really wanted steak. In all honesty we were not expecting a lot from this place, but we were both pleasantly surprised. We weren't expecting a lot because we have been to several high end steakhouses. The New York and Filet we had last night ranked on the top five best steaks we have had out. We recently we to Donovan's in LaJolla and can say this was better, more memorable steak than we had there. With tip we were out of there with one drink each, one steak each with two sides and a side salad each and some Bernadine sauce for $80. Not bad. It's a bit of an old building that looks like it might need some lipstick and the service isn't fine dining style and the wine menu is not great, but fantastic steak and good service. read more

Loved it! My friend and I were looking for the best steak place around and were recommended the Hunter. Definatley the best steak I've ever eaten. You get fresh baked bread, either soup or salad, your steak and two sides for about $20. And it's a really nice atmosphere! Fireplaces and the works...kinda like an old cabin in the mountains. We found this steakhouse while celebrating our anniversary one year and have loved it ever since. There's another one closer to us in San Diego, but there's something about the one in Oceanside that keeps us coming back. I've yet to try something from their menu that I haven't liked. Nice setting dimmed lighting for that intimate atmosphere. The booths were good size and comfortable. The food was delicious. The service was prompt. The only thing the server forgot our order of appetizers but then the dinner portions were huge they we might have been stuffed. If I could give the Hunter restaurant 0 stars I would. Been going there for 40 years, always loved it, until now. Had reservations for 4:30 on Thanksgiving for 10 people. Arrived on time, we're told for half an hour that our table was being set up, we're seated at 5:00. Waitress finally came to our table at 5:20, took drink orders. Took our dinner orders at 5:45, got our dinners at 6:45. Two of our prime ribs were blood raw, we sent back, both came back so tough we could hardly cut them, so sent them back and two of us had no dinner. Waitress asked if we wanted something else, but we said no because it took an hour to get our food..Several in our party said their food was barely warm and some cold. Mashed potatoes very bland and cool. I heard other patrons complaint that their food was also barely warm. Left at 7:15; almost a 3 hour dinner. No discount offered for horrible service and food. Just went there for a networking lunch meeting and the service was top notch. The food was very tasty, I had a pulled pork sandwich. I had been there over 10 years ago and I do remember the decor looking the same. I don't come for the decor but the food and great service. Next time I'm going to try the whiskey peppercorn. As steak lovers, everywhere my wife and I travel we try a steakhouse. On this occasion, our first trip to California, we stopped here with a friend. My friend and i had the salad that they come and assemble for you at the table. Those were great. My wife said that the lettuce in her Caesar salad was wilted though. I ordered a ribeye, medium. My wife ordered a NY strip, medium well. My friend ordered a NY Strip as well. My ribeye was much smaller than I expected, charred, and was medium well in some parts and well done in others. The seasoning however, was OK. My wife's steak was well done. My friend's steak was medium. Overall I was underwhelmed. We went about an hour before they closed and the employees seemed ready to leave. Maybe that is why the food wasn't so great. read more

The smell of this place is so weird- I don't know if it's some kind of old people smell (most of the patrons are pushing 80), or moldy basement smell, but it immediately struck us as smelling like our grandparent's house. Weird. Simple food, good bang for your buck. For $25, I got bread, salad (table-side, for those who knows what that means), filet mignon cooked to perfection, potato, and onion rings. The person I went with got the ribs, and they were just ok, nothing special and definitely not worth going for. In sum, pretty reasonably priced, simple steakhouse. Awesome service. read more
