I was really impressed with my 4 course meal...sooo reasonably priced too. Everrrything was deeelish! The staff and customers were super friendly... such a welcoming environment especially for my first time. They made feel at home in this place built around the 1970s. "Rooted in Tradition, Served with Heart" is the motto. I looove anything vintage. I felt like I literally went back in time...pretty pretty cool. I highly recommend Hunter Steakhouse to the Yelp Community :-)

We've been here a few times and some dishes are better than others, but I do think it deserves more stars than it has here. The prices are reasonable, the service is friendly and food, and I love the table side salad service! Gives old steakhouse vibes. This last visit my husband and I split the wagyu and really enjoyed it! We got the scalloped potatoes with it, which my husband loved but it has onions in it (didn't say so on the menu) so I couldn't eat it. Great martinis and decent wine. I'm definitely going back for that wagyu again.

Prime rib was pretty good. Prices have increased more than anticipated but meat quality was decent. The frozen veg sides need to go though... Ignore the decor and run down feel and order a good cut of meat

Established in 1970, Hunter's Steakhouse comes from an era of where a Steakhouse was a place of refuge to enjoy a hearty meal with family and friends. And often will be a place where longtime friends meet to reminisce and celebrate their lives together while enjoying their favorite entrees. Laughter and love emanate from tables and gentle whispers from booths where all enjoy the aura of the restaurant. Upon entering, we were greeted by a friendly hostess and brought us to a "well-used" booth (my wife positioned herself so that she didn't sink into a "divet" in the middle of the bench seat), with a single lamp illuminating our table and a flickering LED candle creating an intimate atmosphere for us. Adrian, our very hospitable and attentive waiter, and dressed like a waiter, greeted us and welcomed us to Hunter's Steakhouse. Throughout our meal he diligently ensured that we were well cared for our every needs. Without a hesitation, we ordered from the "Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday Only Four Course Entrees" menu. This would explain why there were so many groups and families enjoying a meal here at at Hunter's!!! -Potato Wedges 10/10, not overcooked, cheese still gooey, delicious, nice and hot -3 Shrimp cocktail 8/10, plate was too big making the shrimp seem small, however, was good -Caesar Salad 7/10, large portion, need more lemon and anchovy flavor -Clam Chowder 7/10, nice flavor and lots of minced clams, nice and hot -New York Fromage Steak 8/10, large 10 oz steak, about 1/2" thick, cooked to medium rare, was more on the medium side with light dry pink middle, overwhelming amount of bleu cheese with onions topping which was very flavorful, the steak was flavorful as well, the baked potato perfect with butter and sour cream -Stroganoff with Linguine 6/10, a very LARGE portion served (enough for two), with the tasty beef stroganoff tender, on the salty side, over perfectly cooked linguine noodles, needing the dollop of sour cream to cut the saltiness of the stroganoff, and wasn't able to touch the vegetables or baked potato because the entree was just too much -Desserts taken home...too full -Meal Price: $88.77 with hot tea. We were not disappointed at all and pleased with the meals, the service and the ambiance. I hope that Hunter's Steakhouse be around for generations upon generations. We definitely will be back!!! I know that you will enjoy a meal here at Hunter's Steakhouse!!! FYI: Easily accessible at the end of HWY 78 with lots of parking. If you have any tall friends, maybe bring a hard hat because the front entrance has a very low clearance, typical of steakhouses of this era. Even the trees surrounding the restaurant is so reminiscent of times past.

Wow! I hadn't been here in maybe 25 years! When I was a kid it was my grandmother's favorite and we went for many a family event! It really hasn't changed much. Don't expect a slick modern steakhouse, but do expect quality prime rib and decent value. (They have a special 4 course dinner M-W for $43.00) I went for the basic petite cut (8oz.) of prime rib. It was the right temp and had great flavor. It's a complete meal--soup or salad (tableside salad bar), steamed fresh veggies, and choice of potato. $39.00. The ambiance is old school and extremely nostalgic for me, a child of the '70's. They deserve a better score than what they currently have. FYI they appear to have a special prime rib lunch advertised on site-- worth a try the next time I'm up there.

Loved this place. In town for a wedding and my friend and I were craving meat. So we swung by this place. Entered through a little side door that takes you down to the bar and a seating area. Cozy. Warm. Old school salad bar steak house feel. We had Lily as our bartender. She was the best! Attentive and knowledgeable. Her dirty martini was delicious. I would go back just for those. I ordered the rib eye. Good price and delicious. The amount of sides was crazy! I got a baked potato, vegetable, steak and salad. I went for the Cesar but was tempted to get the garden salad because of the unique style. Like a salad bar but they make it for you. I would definitely recommend this place!! Go go go Thank you to Lily too for an enjoyable evening.

I made a reservation for 7:30pm on a Saturday night, and even though we arrived about 15 minutes early, we were seated right away. The dining room wasn't packed, but it had a steady crowd. It was our first visit, and the interior had a cozy, cabin-style vibe. We were seated upstairs near the window, with a large fireplace nearby--though it wasn't lit. For appetizers, we tried the sampler platter, which included potato skins, crab-stuffed mushrooms, and calamari. Everything was tasty. I wasn't a fan of the mushrooms personally, but the rest of my group really enjoyed them. I ordered the table-side salad with my meal, and it was a delightful experience. Our server brought out an array of fresh ingredients right to our table, allowing us to customize our salad exactly to our liking. The selection included crisp lettuce, vibrant carrots, crunchy cabbage, savory cheese, and a variety of toppings like green onions, croutons, sunflower seeds, juicy tomatoes, pepperoncini, garbanzo beans, and cucumbers. Each ingredient tasted incredibly fresh, making the salad not only delicious but also a fun and interactive part of the meal. For my entrée, I ordered the petite prime rib cooked medium, with au gratin potatoes. It came with mixed vegetables, au jus, and horseradish. The meat was tender and juicy, though I felt it could've used a bit more seasoning. The others in my party ordered the whiskey peppercorn top sirloin, the regular top sirloin, and the stuffed top sirloin. They all said their steaks were flavorful and cooked well. We finished with the crème brûlée for dessert, and it was incredible--one of the best I've had. The crisp caramelized top paired perfectly with the fresh strawberries and blueberries. Our server, Christian, mentioned it was only his third day waiting tables, and he did a great job. The restaurant has a rich history, and our first visit left a great impression. We were all glad we decided to stop in.

I made reservations for dinner at Hunter Steakhouse to celebrate Mother's Day. My wife and I both started off our dinner with a glass of wine and fresh bread with butter...we both chose the salad wheel, and selected the 7 oz filet mignon with sautéed mushrooms. I had the loaded baked potato and my wife chose their mashed potatoes. Everything was cooked to order. It was Perfect! I would like to extend my sincere appreciation to the staff/team members who worked to make Mother's Day so enjoyable for all of us patrons. Thank you!

Food (4/5 stars): I finally tried the Oceanside Sunset Market and was blown away by this foodie paradise. The Tri Tip Sandwich at Hunter's Steakhouse was calling my name as soon as I could smell the BBQ. This was a bang for your buck meal because they loaded the sandwich with meat. They also smothered the meat with their sweet and tangy BBQ sauce, which added nice flavor. I wished the meat had a stronger marinade or dry rub because it lacked a little flavor and the BBQ sauce would've been even better if it were spicier. Experience (4/5 stars): * Price: a little pricey * Wait Time: minimal * Service: good * Parking: I recommend the free parking garage just a few blocks away from the market

This is my absolute favorite place to celebrate my birthday and special occasions. My mom took me since I was 7 years old and shortly after covid the Hunter Steakhouse in Mission Valley closed. So one day driving south from Anaheim I saw the Hunter sign from the freeway. For our anniversary my spouse agreed to take me to this special place. EVERYTHING was perfect, it was like a time capsule back to my childhood and it was wonderful. My dream come true, the perfect salad from the lazy Susan was identical to all salads I have ever had from Hunter. The ribeye steak was perfection. Great flavor for my medium rare steak. Our server was excellent. She was so helpful, attentive and extremely knowledgeable about the history of Hunter Steakhouse. If you want nostalgia and a great steak then go to Hunter.

We celebrated my husband's birthday at Hunter's Steak House and had a fantastic experience. We made a 6:30 pm reservation on Saturday, 2/7/26, and I'm so glad we did--the restaurant was packed. Despite that, we were seated right away. Our server was wonderful: very friendly, attentive, and courteous. Our appetizer came out quickly, and our steaks were cooked exactly to our liking. Even though I ordered my prime rib well done, it was still tender, juicy, and absolutely delicious. To top it all off, they surprised my husband with a complimentary Mud Pie and a huge sparkling candle, which made his birthday feel extra special. It was a great first-time experience for me, and we will definitely be back!

Ask the Community - Hunter Steakhouse

Can reservations be made for Xmas day in 2023?

I don't see, why not, but you would have to call. I also strongly urged you not to go there because the food absolutely sucks.

Are you open in thanksgiving ? Special menu?

    Do they take reservations?

    Yes

Do lunch and dinner entrees include any sides?

Yes, your choice of baked, mash or au gratin potato, or rice pilaf. Vegetables. Choose salad or soup. Their table side salad is fantastic!

    Is there a children's menu?

I believe there is a children's menu. I've seen lots of family groups eating dinner there....and children's plates seem to be smaller. If you have not yet tried Hunter, you… Read more

I recall it being a delicious and wonderful dining experience. I have been looking forward to bringing my family and friends here all week. I am giving this restaurant 3 stars, because their food is still AMAZING and their staff is super nice and I believe deep down inside that they just had a REALLY OFF night. We had reservations for a party of 9 last night. The table was set up nicely and accommodated a few extra if needed, which I thought was cool. We started with some adult beverages: an Old Fashion, some Hotel Nacionals, a Fashionably Late, and a couple of beers. Everything started great. Dennis, our server was very cool and friendly and gave great suggestions. We ordered the mac and cheese sides and they were delicious with huge pieces of savory bacon in them. We also ordered the brussel sprouts which we never received and didn't even realize it until the very end when we received the bill because of all the other issues we had... but we'll get to that in a moment. But let's talk about what did go well... the delicious food we did get. We ordered the Pig burger which was sooo good and came with crispy fries. The fish for the fish and chips were 2 huge pieces and were delicious, came with yummy seasoned waffle fries and the tiniest tartar sauce and malt vinegar. I had to request 4 more for that amount of fish, but no big deal. Dennis brought out as much as we needed. Their ranch sauce is really good too. Don't judge just because it's a little peachy'ish and looks thousand island'ish. lt's still some very good ranch. My son said he really tasted the bitterness of beer in the fish batter but maybe it was just in that piece he had; I could not taste it in the piece of fish I ate. The short rib was really tender and delicious... the sauce was just a tad salty for my taste, but the mashed potatoes it sat on sort of balanced it out a little. The fried chicken thighs were really cooked well, juicy, crispy and seasoned perfectly. We ordered two Teres Major steaks. One rare with mashed potaoes, one medium rare with grits. The rare one came out medium and without mushrooms, took FOREVEEERR to remake (the rest of the table was almost done with our meals...& not sure why it took so long since the restaurant wasn't that busy and it's a RARE steak). The one with grits came with mashed potatoes instead of grits. Dennis was super nice and apologetic and corrected both mistakes when we let him know. He then brought us a big bowl of grits. The manager (blonde lady) came over and apologized for the mistakes tonight, letting us know they usually do not happen, and let us know she'd be comping one of our steaks and would be bringing a dessert on them. We thought that was very nice of them. However, we never did receive that dessert. My husband handed Dennis his credit card (before our friends tried to pay the bill) and not sure why but our bill never came, and we never saw Dennis again either after he boxed up our leftovers and took the card. We had to ask another server for our bill because we had been waiting for quite a while... and needed to head out as we plans to go to a lounge. The other server came back with my husband's credit card, the bill (that's when I finally noticed the brussel sprouts sides we never got but were charged), and let the server know. He immediately apologized and took it off the bill. So I'm not sure what happened last night at Flying Pig...Missing and charged Brussel Sprouts, steak overcooked, missing mushrooms, mashed potatoes instead of grits, then a comped dessert promised but never delivered. WOW. I had to apologize to my friends. I was totally hyping up this place and it underdelivered. They automatically got their 20% gratuity for our party of 9 but anyone that knows me knows how much I absolutely love great service combined with exceptional food and that could have easily been a 30-35% tip had they been on their A game! We only come to Oceanside once a year. Maybe we will try again next year. Maybe not. This trip was about trying out a bunch of different restaurants and giving honest reviews on dishes/businesses we haven't tried before, or in a long time. Do better guys.

We settled on Oceanside in hopes of finding good food, as our weekend (end of Feb) had been full of a poor results. This place came up as very well rated on Yelp, as my friend and I searched for places to eat. It was a Saturday night with great weather. The red flag I should have read into was that the lone guy working that night was a one man show. He was doing it all in the front of the house. I tried to get us a table to sit outdoors but he just couldn't get to the table to clean it. After about 20 minutes he finally came and just moved all the bowls to the empty table next to it and wiped it down. When my friends finally arrived we all sat down to sticky menus that had NO descriptions. What you see on the website is exactly what they have on the menu. We had to wait to ask the server/host what each menu item meant. It took a while to get our food from when we ordered. Thank goodness for good company, I didn't clock it. The food options were limited and keep in mind for those who have children, most of the options come with a spicy kick, you'll have to explicitly tell them "no spicy"! There was a party who had been sitting for a while before we got there and a kiddo took a bite of pizza and was crying, screaming from it being so spicy. With my ramen the portions are tiny for what you pay, with 1 piece of meat, not enough noodles. Flavor wise it was spicy and bland. We ordered a couple appetizers which were not very good. The edamame was overly salty and soaked in soy sauce and the karaage was probably the only good thing and that was a little overfried. No one in our party finished our food or took any of the leftovers home. Save yourself the trip, not worth trying the "unique foods".
