Ordered a dirty martini and Carrie said she could only do it up --- then changed it to on the rocks which was too strong without blue cheese olives. This alone took 10 minutes. Then, she kept saying she was too busy with all the other tables and other party room. So I asked about the wagyu A5. She said it takes a long time to prepare. So I asked for prime rib with fries. She brought me a rare Wagyu A5 steak and I asked for a prime rib with fries. Get this- I returned the wagyu a5 and she charged me anyway! I will never ever be back to this shithole and will be posting about the worst restaurant experience of my life! When we visit Oceanside we like to visit Hunter Steakhouse. We sit in their "dungeon" as I call it because you walk down and it has a bit of a speakeasy feel to it. This is a review for two seperate visits! Went with my boyfriend for a date night since I was interested in seeing if the ghost would make an apperance. They did not, but the wine pairing recommend for my steak was delicious. Boyfriend said the potatoes were a little bland but nothing some salt and pepper couldn't cure. I used to visit Hunter Steakhouse when it was Hungry Hunter and one of only a handful of local restaurants. I have to admit I haven't been in for at least 20 years. We finally decided to come back to celebrate our son's birthday. We were a party of six early on a Saturday evening. I'm so glad we made reservations. It was very busy. The parking lot was pretty full and the spaces were a bit narrow. I was very disappointed to find the lodge motif I had liked so much had been replaced with underwhelming photos of the pier and local Oceanside beaches. I guess the lodge decor has gone out of style but I have to say it was much better than what they have now. The restaurant is very run down. The tables are probably original to the day they opened in 1970. There was a musty smell when we walked in and the ladies room smelled horrific as if there was a sewage leak. Our waitress, Roxi, was outstanding. What a lovely young lady with a great smile. She took great care of us. I ordered a Mai Tai. It was pretty strong. We started with the Calamari. It was delicious. Three of us ordered the prime rib and chose the table side salad. The salad was very fresh and I liked that I could choose the toppings I wanted. Our bread came when the salad was served. We were a large party so we did have to ask for extra bread and we were accommodated. The prime rib was very good, cooked just the way we had ordered. It was tender and juicy. We all loved our food, however, my son ordered the porterhouse steak and he said it was chewy. That was a disappointment considering what it cost. He had been looking forward to a good steak. I hope someday they can renovate this place. There is so much potential. I would like to try their lunch sometime. Hopefully the issues with the odors will be resolved. We live in Carlsbad and wanted a steak dinner. Not too many steak houses left. We haven't been to Hunter Steak house in a few years so we tried it tonight. It was the perfect meal. We tried the 4 course dinner and it was delicious. My husband had the Prime Rib and it was a large cut with very little fat. I had a steak and it was cooked perfectly. If they removed the ugly tarp in the back and relocated the trash, they could extend the back to create outdoor seating that overlooks this beautiful spot! We loved the vibe of the trees in front and the cabin feel, but when we walked in, the vibe was not so nice. The music was cheesy 80's and it had a dark feeling inside. The hostess, bless her heart, told us we need to wait since there was only one waiter apparently and "many parties ahead", although it seemed like not much was going on there... We took a look at the menu and decided no to paying $17 for 2 eggs and some bacon, with maybe some fruit and French fries? I'd rather go to Sprouts and buy an 18 pack of eggs and pack of bacon and cook it myself for that price. Not worth the energy of eating in that place. I have lived in the area my entire life and FINALLY stepped inside. Right away I loved the ambiance. Hunters cabin feel and everything was clean. We were quickly seated and they brought out a plate with warm bread and butter. I ordered the prime rib, crab stuffed mushrooms with a baked potato and table side salad bar. I also ordered a glass of wine for the lady and a bloody Mary for myself. When the food came out, the food looked incredible. The steak hardly fit on the plate, the baked potato was loaded and the salad was super fresh. The steak was so tender I barely needed my knife. Everything was way better than expected given te price. My husband and I live a good steakhouse. This place is pretty close to our home in OSide. We've been here about 5-6 times and sadly, service and food quality are spotty. The first time, we sat at the bar and the bartender was great. We had a meal at the bar and service and food was great. The second time, we sat upstairs and service and food was also very good. The last few times, we've sat at a table in the bar and things went down from there. It seems the wait staff serving the bar tables in the bar has a lot of regulars. It seems that if you aren't a regular, you have to do tricks or something to get a good personality, good service or even a smile from the server. Tonight, we had Alex as a server. I don't know if he is new or what but man, zero personality nor care for customer service. To Alex's defense, even the old time servers in the bar have zero personality unless you are an old time customer. I deal with zero personality from people all day long. When I dine out, I want to interact with people who appreciate my business instead of someone who acts like it's a bother. This is our last time here. Ambiance: 3/10 Overall food: 4/10 Steaks: 2/10 We've been wanting to come here for going on 8 years now, but never got the chance since it's kinda out of the way and we just never thought of it while in the area. Today we decided to take the plunge after spending a couple hours in the area. Inside was a bit dingy and aged with cheap photos on the wall. The main host who greeted us was very nice. The one who took us to our table was not (acted like she did not want to be there). Our waitress was also super nice, but not the most attentive. We got our order in with some upselling (but honestly, no points docked since our waitress was nice about it). Got our salads via "tableside salad bar," which was a nice touch due to the options of toppings. Salad itself was mediocre though due to slightly wilted romaine. We had to survey the other tables to see they had gotten complimentary bread and ask for it. All of this however I could overlook if the following had not happened. Our food was brought out and our steaks were not cooked even close to correctly (my wife ordered the filet mignon medium well and I ordered my top sirloin medium rare). Looks like they swapped the preparations -- fine no biggie, mistakes happen. However... a minute later my near well done steak is brought back out and I am told that the chef said this is medium rare and if I really wanted it more rare or cooked more... I said "I want it like the other one looked. That is not a medium rare steak." The steak I ended up getting was rare but burnt on the surface (which I took anyways since I was hungry and didn't want to wait again). Also usually prefer horseradish with my steak, but the waitress didn't come by again until after we were half way through our meals. Baked potato was cooked well, but flavorless. Plate is served with a handful of freezer-burned vegetable medley. Honestly, I would have given this place maybe 2-3 stars, but the attitude, the inattentiveness, and the downright WRONG food preparation lead me to give this place only one star and a promise to never return. This place is a total time capsule, and upon entering you feel like you're transported back to the 70s. My family has dined at Hunter Steakhouse every now and then since I was much younger but now that I live down the road, almost every special occasion seems to warrant another visit. Over the past year we've managed to dine here 4-5 times and each experience has been pleasant and I've left already planning what I'll order next time. Our most recent visit last week was a reservation for my mum's birthday, and we all enjoyed starting off with a round of gin and tonics, followed by our mains which were a variety of different things - the forest mushroom chicken, a New York strip, salmon, plain pasta... everything was excellent. While the menu prices are not cheap, you get so much bang for your buck when you're ordering a main, it definitely feels like a worthy spend. I always start my meal with the tableside salad bar, which feels extra special as it's built to order right in front of you. There's a great selection of sides to choose from to accompany your main, and if you're getting a steak may I highly suggest adding the whiskey peppercorn sauce! I had to knock a star off mostly due to the fact that our server at our last visit was fine in the sense that we were all fed and watered by the end of the meal, but she did a couple of things that were quite off-putting, like when she took everyone's order EXCEPT the birthday girl's, and walked away to attend to another table before we flagged her down to bring her back and finalize our order. She didn't have a very warm demeanor and seemed annoyed by our requests (for another round of drinks, asking questions about items on the menu, etc...). Aside from all that, our experience was barely dampened. We finished our meal with a huge slice of carrot cake, which was delicious. All in all, it was yet another happy meal! P.S. The food here is good and you can tell that by the way people still come here year after year even though the menu hasn't changed. However, the owner of this business puts little to no money into the upkeep of this restaurant. As I sit here and wait for my to go order, the leather on this chair is peeling badly and the host stand has the same chips and peeling paint that it had when I worked here over 8 years ago. This place could be a nice steakhouse but because the absolute bare minimum is put into its upkeep, it feels cheap and a little too homey and generally pulls in an over 50 crowd. The staff here is great, very polite and professional and I think that has is another reason why the people who come back, come back. My staple favs here are the whiskey peppercorn sauce which is one of a kind, the table side salad, the stuffed mushrooms and the ranch. I've heard the bloody Mary's here are delicious as well but I have yet to try one. The food is consistently delicious and like most people I will keep coming back despite how this place looks. But when people are visiting town and ask where to go, I have to preface this place with the food is good but the ambience isn't. It feels dated and looks run down which are not words you want to hear when you look for a nice steakhouse. A small investment in this place could really help bring in a new younger crowd and potentially a lot more revenue. read more

Of course it doesn't compare to like a fancy steak house like Born and Raised or even Cowboy Star, but the price and portion is something to rave about. Plenty of outdoor seating. They even brought out 2 heaters for us. We had a party of 8, which they were able to accommodate. We ordered a bunch of things to share for appetizers. As for my entree I got the Caesar salad, the bigger filet mignon one with a side of Shrimp scampi, and we ordered about 4 bottles of their finest Cabernet. My husband got the humongous prime rib. I'm not gonna lie, my filet was excellent! It was perfectly cooked, nice grill marks, nicely seasoned that I didn't have to drench in salt. Enjoyed it with the Stags Leap cab... perfecto! I love me some good prime rib and stumbled on Hunter Steakhouse while visiting Oceanside. It was in December so they had cute Christmas lights on display. The building is charming and the food was delicious. I thoroughly enjoyed the side dishes of clam chowder, scalloped potatoes, and sautéed mushrooms. Our waitress was very sweet and accommodating. Ive been going to this place for like over a decade because it used to be the best. I just ordered delivery and the $20 macaroni side came with 7 individual macaroni shells, or 2 tsp. The grilled onion side for $7 was literally less than 1 tsp. These sides were ordered a la carte, not in tandem w an entree. The side of potatoes al gratin i've ordered more times than i can remember usually arrive as beautiful scalloped potatoes but now i got about a tablespoon of diced potato that honestly looked like some leftover from q shitty diner breakfast, with no gratin sauce whatsoever on said potatoes. Ribs were once my favorite, these were totally undercooked, pink inside and consistency of gum from a car on a hot day- stale at the ends then gross chewy inside. I have been going to this Hunter Steakhouse for about 25 years. The food has always been delicious and the service is always excellent. The dining room is nice and clean. My favorite dish is the Filet Mignon for $31.00. The dish comes with a crispy salad, a big loaded baked potato, and veggies. The filet is very tender and juicy and it almost melts in your mouth. I don't know about the rest of you all, but when I go out, I don't expect to be blown away with orgasmic food anymore. However, we did order a couple different things off the menu, and all of them were good. We did the table side salad, which my son loved because of course it's something fun and different. I did the ribeye, which was seasoned well, but I did add a bit of salt. My wife ordered the prime rib which she said she enjoyed. We didn't end up getting that lobster or crab because they said they were no longer going to be serving it because of the market prices which I understand because they are getting a bit out of control as well.
