My first visit to a bar in NYC, and it was almost ruined by the poor service from or server, Melissa. She took our first drink order, and then when a bigger table came in, she completely abandoned our table. I watched as they had drinks, appetizers, and then entrees. I eventually had to go get her from behind the bar and ask for our check. We closed out with her, then proceeded to go to the other side of the bar with our friends and have drinks and appetizers for a couple more hours. If she had been attentive, that would've been her business and tip. Sadly, she decided we were not important enough. Other than her poor service, the bar was nice, the drinks were good, and the appetizers were what you'd expect from a bar. I would go back again, but I wouldn't have her as a server. read more

If you're a Breaking Bad fan you owe it to all of your fellow fans to come into Hurley's and buy a drink or four. Here's why. Stranded in the dessert, an empty wasteland stretching for miles and not a drop of water in sight. Walter White found himself in this situation many times throughout the show and four of us found ourselves equally stranded. Only worse. Much worse. We were in Times Square, the center of the media universe, surrounded by the largest video screens in the world. We could eat cuisine from thirty different countries within two blocks. We held small computers in our pockets that wirelessly connected to the entire sum of human knowledge. And yet we were stranded because it was Sunday night and we could not watch Breaking Bad. If you're saying "So what?" then you aren't a fan or you came along so late you could power watch it all on Netflix. Good for you. Stop reading. For the rest of us who knew what it was like to wait week after week, desperate to know the fate of Walt, Jesse, even super annoying Skyler, you understand. Now know this was during the last season. Specifically it was September 8, 2013. "To'hajiilee" was the episode and last we left Walt he had ordered a hit on...well, you either already know or for some reason you're still reading but haven't watched so I'll be nice and not spoil it. Needless to say, we needed to see this episode. Waiting for a digital download the next day or the return to our home DVRs would not suffice. You know why. Our hotel did not get AMC. But we figured we could find someplace to watch. We got back from our show around 10:30 which gave us an hour to find somewhere to watch the replay. We searched and searched and searched. The Giants were playing the Cowboys so even touristy Times Square was filled with football fans needing to see the game. So we searched in vain. Most places didn't have AMC. Others wouldn't switch off the game even on a single set. The minutes ticked by as discarded bars, restaurants, even newsstands were left in our wake. But we couldn't give up. We wouldn't give up. A waitress in a restaurant said she could change the channel on the bar TV but she was only on season 3 so she didn't want anything spoiled. We saw red and threatened her with fulminated mercury but she didn't recall season 1. Another bouncer said to try Hurley's but not tell us if we saw it because he was only on season 4. So we ran to Hurley's. Technically they closed at 11pm but they were open to see the rest of the game. A women stumbled out the door, and we clamored in behind her while she debated gravity with the sidewalk. It was 11:27. Time was running out. Every TV was on the game, the football game that was less than a touchdown apart with minutes to go. Hopeless, we asked a bartender if we could have just one TV, just one, please, oh please. He asks for what and we told him. He nodded, he was one of us. The back room was closed to customers but he led us to a table and turned both of the room's TVs to that most blessed of channels. Talking Bad was still on so we muted the sound while we ordered drinks. Many drinks. From Steven, our new best friend, patron saint of Heisenwatchers. The show started and we watched every glorious minute. Steven came to bring us drinks during commercials, he was only on season 3. We ordered more. We watched. We screamed. We yelled louder than the football fans. We saw it all. Exhausted, spent at the end of 60 minutes' worth of revelations and gunfire, we settled our bill. Steven put our tab name as Breaking Badasses. We took pictures with Saint Steven. He was tipped well. Very well. On the way back to the hotel we thanked the bouncer and told the waitress how season 4 ended. She deserved it. So if you know what it was like to wait for a single episode of Breaking Bad then you owe it to all of us. Go to Hurley's. Ask for Steven. Even if he isn't there, order a drink and tell them the Breaking Badasses sent you to Hurley's. Yeah bitch, Hurley's! read more

You walk into this venue thinking that it is a small pub but it is far from that. There are at least three floors and each seems to carry its own personality. Stop on floor one at the bar and grab a drink, venture to floor 2 for an older crowd that is having dinner, ah floor 3 my favorite with a live band and an outdoor area. Service, crowd, music were a-ok in my book. I enjoyed my night at Hurley's and was sad to leave. Caution: You may run into friends from days past. The family and I came in here for a couple of drinks last week before First Date started. It's a great place to grab a few drinks before seeing anything at the Longacre theatre because it's quite literally next door. The place reminded me of pubs back home in Glasgow. I think because it's an Irish pub and they stocked Irish beers on tap, that the smell I'm talking about is probably the beer. But it was nice to reminisce! It seems pretty cheap in comparison to some places roundabout Times Square, and there's a yelp offer on at the moment that I think was offering beer for $4 for your choice of a draft pint, which isn't terrible. I generally avoid this area due to the tourists, traffic, prices, and the profusion of accountants, but this place is kind of awesome. The bar on the top floor has a lovely patio garden which can make you forget that you're in hell's kitchen, or some other room in hell. The bartender up there is a nice Irish dude (surprise) who will pour you a complementary shot if you're tipping. And, though I realize nobody cares, the decor is really cool and eclectic. Not kitschy at all. They might be weird about letting you up to the bar during "peak" hours. Just say you're meeting people there or go in like you're heading to the restaurant and then head up to the 3rd floor. read more

My mom and I grabbed dinner at Hurley's after experiencing Hamilton on Broadway. Unfortunately our dining experience did not compare to our theater experience. The best thing about it was the cute little table with a view of the street that we sat at. I ordered the Chicken Berry Hill and my mom ordered Shrimp Scampi. Unfortunately when the shrimp arrived it smelled VERY fishy which kind of ruined our appetites. We ended up sharing my chicken dish which was just okay but I wouldn't order it again. It literally came with two asparagus spears (one for each of us) and the sauce was not what I expected it to be. The saving grace was definitely the cheesecake because I haven't met many cheesecakes I don't like. I did eat the entire piece before setting off in search of a slice of pizza. read more

Convenient to the theater district. I met my daughter and her boyfriend there for snacks and drinks. We sat at the bar. The barmaid was one of the most oblivious and rude people we'd dealt with in quite some time. She probably could have made the restaurant more money and a bigger tip if she only more attentive and provided food and beverages as we needed them. The food was as good as any you could get from TGIF or Applebees. Nice selection of beers, although I would have had more if we had some service. read more

I come here because my dad loves this place, he's been coming here for ages. I think it's a little too stuffy, personally, but I can't say I've ever had a bad experience here. Most of the times I've been here the bar area has been empty, so I typically get prompt service. This time around was the same, as I had a lovely Irish waitress/bartender attending to my every need. I don't bother with the menu usually. They've got one of the best cheeseburgers in town; I'd recommend it to anyone that stops in. Since I already knew my main course, I checked the menu for a suitable appetizer. The lobster bisque stood out (I'm a seafood junkie), so I ordered one up along with a Bloody Mary. The Bloody was unimpressive. In fact, I'd call it one of the laziest I've ever had. I didn't watch my bartender, but if someone told me she simply squirted some vodka and a can of mix into my glass, I wouldn't have questioned them. It had zero personality, coming off as a bland & generic drink rather than a personal concoction that most bartenders turn them into. The lobster bisque fared a bit better. Topped with crab meat, it was warm & creamy, perfect for a frigid afternoon. It was well-seasoned, not too salty. The addition of the crab meat gave it some added texture and flavor that might've otherwise left it nothing more than a standard bisque. The cheeseburgers here rock. Plain & simple. They're thick, juicy, PERFECTLY cooked and they taste incredible. My mouth is watering right now as I type this. That's as good a recommendation as any I can think to give any food. When brief thoughts of it cause you to water at the mouth, you know they've done something right. read more

This place was neat! First floor bar with pub tables and a rooftop area with tables made of barrels. It was too hot so we sat downstairs. We had beers which were drafts we got cheaper by "checking in" via YELP ;) they were $4! We had burgers and fries and were happy with the location and service. The food is very good also, even though the mushroom risotto I had was a bit rich for my taste, it was still tasty. I called Paul to make a reservation for a group of 20ish for the upstairs terrace and he was very cordial and asked if we needed anything. No fee for the reservation! He did mention there was a party of 160 before us ending at 10 and so we should get there a little bit after since they will probably exit slowly. We were told we could bring an ipod to plug in if we wanted to but they do have their own jukebox. I asked if we could bring a cake and if there were a cake cutting fee and he said it's fine and there is no fee and they will provide plates, cutting knife, serving utensils, etc. I also asked if we could get happy hour specials and he said he would look into it but unfortunately they usually do it for parties of 80+ When we got there on a Saturday evening, they were very welcoming and led us up to the terrace (there are two doors, go to the one on the right which leads to stairs up to the terrace..one on the left goes to the bar..our people got a little confused haha). When I got up there with my friends, it was crowded with people still left from the 160 + some minglers. I was totally fine with this because the outdoor terrace had a lot of room (without seeming too big as well) + birthday boy likes "bumpin places." The terrace looks different than what's on the website and has some tiki like hut over the bar and a bunch of bar stools and bar tables around. I gave the cake to the bartender and she put it in the fridge for us with no questions asked and just told me to tell her when we needed it. 2 hours later, we're still partying and drinking it up on the terrace to great music (it varies...from world cup waka waka song and some pop music to marvin gaye. they played more pop music when we requested it :) - cocktails were around 11 dollars? and beers were like 5-6 dollars. I thought the cocktails would be a little cheaper but it was late night and the venue was conveniently next to the theaters. At about 12ish we decided to cut the cake and they immediately brought it out with plates. One of the servers was pretty happy to help me cut the cake after the candles were blown out hahah probably afraid i would hurt myself. After a while it was just our party and another party up on the roof which was good because my friends could run around really drunk and not hit anybody hahaha :P (it was a bday!) Overall GREAT rooftop for a chill party. I think they should open it more (advertise it more) to the public if there are only a few small parties up on the roof because it got really empty after we left. Thanks Paul + Anne! Went here with a friend to grab a bite to eat on a week night. The place wasn't too crowded, but we ended up grabbing seats at the bar. For my meal, I decided to go with the southwestern chicken salad. The salad was a lot better than I was anticipating as there was plenty of chicken and other ingredients to go with the lettuce. My friend was not a huge fan of his salad, but I was satisfied with mine. The bartenders here are also pretty friendly and you can easily watch sports on the many TVs they have if you're looking for a place to watch a game. read more

Since 1892, apparently, this place has been a mainstay for the New Yorker needing a long, stiff drink. Well, after a few blocks walking through Times Square, this New Yorker felt so inclined. We actually had dinner here, and it was an alright experience. I loved the cozy booths that they have here--they're very intimate and feel very old and historic. Apparently, they're not as historic as I thought (apparently Hurley's moved from 6th Ave. a few decades ago--and it's hard for me to consider the 1970's historic). However, it was a pretty nice date setup (white linens, plush booth, privacy). The appetizers were great--a very solid rendition of traditional lobster bisque with a healthy pile of crab meat on top and a moist and huge portion of chicken satay (which my boyfriend proclaimed to be better than at Thai restaurants). The main course, though, was a bit more disappointing. I ordered the pan-seared scallops, which were just gross. Scallops should not taste fishy, and to make matters worse, these scallops were covered in a super salty gravy (blasphemy!). My boyfriend's sausage platter seemed pretty good, but no where near the caliber of the appetizers. The scene was a bit B&T/touristy, but not disruptive. The service was nice, though not very attentive. Overall, I don't regret going in, but I definitely won't be coming back. read more

Hurleys is GREAT. The food is great. The ambiance is great. We ate UPSTAIRS where the decor was shelves and shelves of books. It was a lot of fun to just look at the books. You can come before or after a Broadway show. But we went there in between those times (while everyone was IN watching a show) and the staff was so much fun, great sense of humors! LOVED IT! I had Chicken Berry Hill. I only used a FORK to cut the chicken, it was so TENDER. My husband had the Chicken Pot Pie and thoroughly enjoyed it. We had the Artichoke dip for an appetizer. Brought 4 of my friends (that were visiting from Ireland) here Labor Day weekend (the Friday night). I was totally delighted with my choice for bringing them here. The food is typical of NYC bar food, steaks are on the menu, burgers, wings, salads. It's a pretty standard menu. The food was great. Everyone was happy with their choice, and the portions were pretty generous. The drinks were good (cosmos for the girls were nice and strong!). What impressed us most was the service. Granted it was a quite night, but when I asked for a table outside, we were given our own terrace, which was pretty spectacular to have NYC, especially given the fact the closest thing to outdoor seating in my studio apartment is a fire escape. The terrace was small, but fitted the table for 6 nicely, there wasn't much space for anything else there. Our services waited patiently at the entrance to the terrace, far enough to give us our privacy, but near enough also for us to call them as needed. It was really like having caterers come to my hypothetical Manhattan Condo! It was really great to be able to give my out of town friends this feeling in NYC. It was a fantastic evening. I liked Hurley's, even though, for me, as a vegetarian, there wasn't a whole lot from which to choose. I liked the gestalt of the space. It was cozy; there were nice booths upstairs; it wasn't crowded. The food was just okay. Of the two veg options I remember -- a pasta and a housecrafted veggie burger, I opted for the latter. It had its merits, but wasn't the most flavorful. It was definitely sizeable, but on a skimpy English Muffin instead of a good hamburger bun. I suspect that chef's choice was driven by the size of the veggie burger itself. With a larger bun, one wouldn't be able to fit it in his mouth. I still couldn't, really, and had to pick it apart in order to consume it. Did it hit the spot? Not really. The fries which accompanied the veggie burger were decent, not greasy, hot, unsalted. The bread which was brought to the table at the start was warm and delicious. Overall, my impressions are favorable for the ambiance and the coziness. For carnivores/omnivores, this would be a better choice, which more options. Everyone else around me ordered chicken, beef, or shrimp, and they all seemed relatively happy with their meals. Afterwards, I wondered whether the penne would have been a better option. It sounded boring, though -- pasta in an olive oil and garlic sauce. I also worried that it would be dripping in oil, though after observing the kitchen's preparation of the dishes, I think it would have been okay. It would be a lovely place to grab a drink and a snack post-theatre. In the bar, immediately upon entering, people were watching sports games. It can be a quiet haven among the bustle and hustle of Times Square. I hear (though did not see) that they have a nice rooftop bar area. For four of us (without any alcohol or other drinks), it was under $80 before tip. For Midtown Manhattan, I'd call that a veritable bargain. read more

We had dinner & dessert at Hurleys tonight. It was thoroughly disappointing. We had: The 1/2 roasted chicken - which was dry, cool, and lacked taste. The fish and chips were fine. The Shepards pie was disgusting. The pasta was tolerable. The tollhouse cookie pie was awful. The service wasn't great, the lamp shades are ripped and have holes in them, and the bathrooms are not clean. And there's no signal for Verizon or AT&T. This has to be the worst review I've ever given a restaurant. There ARE redeeming qualities to Hurleys... They have a bar that doesn't make you want to hurl, and the location is the only reason anyone ever accidentally goes to this pathetic excuse for a manhattan restaurant. Would NOT recommend. I'd go back if I was in the neighborhood for sure, but not a destination. Bartender was cool. Different beers downstairs. The outside menu was updated so ask to be sure. They said the had Smuttynose IPA for example and didn't. Also note, soda refills are $3 each! My friend was a bit surprised at the bill. Atmosphere: nice rooftop bar. My family had came to NY to visit and stayed at The Crown Plaza Hotel and we came across this restaurant across the street. 4 of us had their Whiskey Burger and 1 had chicken tenders. "CLUB LA CAGE at Hurley's is Broadway's newest destination for the best pre-show and post-show dining! Conveniently located just steps away from the Longacre Theatre, Club La Cage offers relaxed and affordable pre-show dining with flair. After the show, stop by for a late nite bite, decadent desserts and fabulous cocktails!" The e-mail gives you the option to click for more info, but...there is nothing more to learn. Lastly the e-mail states for you to present your ticket stub to receive 10% off (Restrictions apply)! They never state the restrictions! We walked in after the show and were one of maybe 5 people total in the place. For Times Square on a Friday night...we should have left then, but the hostess was nice and told us that the vibe would get going. I told her I got the e-mail and we had just come from the show to check it out! Our waiter was ok, we ordered an appetizer and drinks. The drinks were nothing special and neither was the appetizer. There was NOTHING La Cage related nor was there even a cocktail menu! When we finally decided to cash out I asked the waiter if he wanted to see my ticket stub for the10% off...he told me "no," as that was only applicable for dinner! What? Is that the restrictions? That's a pretty hefty restriction and incredibly misleading. Instead of arguing with the waiter I tried to find the hostess...but of course she was no where to be found. So we paid the bill and left. I was going to see an off-Broadway show and randomly picked one of the zillion Irish pubs in the Theater area/outside of Times Square. Hurley's menu seemed decent and affordable with lots of options. First impression walking up was that all the lights were out on the sign and it read: "LEY'S", but it's one of the only restaurants on that block so you can't miss it. I walked in and there was a long bar area with people who just got out of work having beers. There were mostly older men and a few young professionals. The music was a good mix of all genres. When you walk further inside there's tables with people having dinner then another bar area that was pretty empty and quiet. It was recommended to me to make a reservation for dinner. I honestly didn't need one because it was empty, but I guess it's better to play it safe. The host took me upstairs and I chose to sit in one of their private booths. It was very cozy and comfortable. I like how the tables were very fancy even though we were ordering $12-$15 meals. Food-- Dinner rolls: They give you 3 warm rolls in a basket with butter. Chopped Salad: Huge plate of one part lettuce, one part tomato, one part red onion. A little overwhelming with the amount of onion, but I did ask for a boring chopped salad, so what else should I expect? Lobster Bisque: Good amount of crab meat, very thick. Perfect for a freezing cold night. Basically, it tasted like Lobster Bisque should. Pulled Pork BBQ Sandwich: BBQ sauce was tasty. They were a little slacking with the amount of pork on the bun, but it tasted really good (I took a bite of my BF's). It came with fries which were just regular fries. Tuscan Roasted Chicken: It was 1/2 roasted chicken. It came with veggies and your choice of potato (I chose baked). The chicken was juicy. Not too flavorful. The skin had most of the flavor from the spices. It kind of sucked that they didn't have any happy hour specials. Apparently they only have them on Sundays and Mondays. They probably attract a large crowd no matter what since they have a prime location, but c'mon.. you're an Irish pub. I had two glasses of wine and my BF chose a beer from their extensive beer menu. The service was excellent. The manager came over and asked us about the show we were going to see and if we enjoyed our dining experience. The waitress was helpful the whole time.
