I was here for the bubbles and bao bottomless dim sum menu and while we really liked the food, during the latter half of the meal it seemed like they were leaving out items we ordered and not being honest about it. Everything started out excellent with the dim sum starters and several platters of duck (as part of the free-flowing duck add-on we got). However, after we moved onto entrees, they only gave us one silky egg portion even though two of us ordered it and also did not include the shrimp/mushroom it was supposed to come with. They also left out the soy milk ice cream that was supposed to come with the bao dessert and said "it's not part of the dessert for brunch" even though I was there for the same bottomless brunch package the week before and it was definitely part of it. I then asked a different staff member about it and he gave a different excuse "we ran out of soy milk ice cream" even though I saw other guests with the soy milk ice cream. It almost felt like the more food we ate, the less they wanted to give us? But if you are going to create a bottomless food menu then you should honor that completely, instead of removing items that were supposed to come with what we paid for and not being honest about it. read more

Went here to celebrate a birthday with a group. We were placed in a private area. We ordered several dishes, but my favorites were the duck, pork and beef ribs, and soba noodles with scallops. There were some misses, that others seemed to enjoy. Service was great! I would return again. read more

My friend and I came here Restaurant Week on what used to be Le Cirque. Our dining experience was disappointing, from the food to the service to my friend getting overcharged for her wine. Despite the fact that I was an hour late due to the train. I managed to not miss happy hour. The happy hour food items are priced for 1 piece, and drinks were reasonable. We were told that our happy hour drinks would transfer over to the check for our dinners. Somehow, my friend's wines ordered for happy hour were transferred over to her check at full price, which was ridiculous and wrong. There was obvious miscommunication, and we felt that we were misled. The service never informed us of the price changes from the bar to the dining table. In addition, we requested separate checks, and the service staff still managed to screw that up. Throughout the dining service, I had to raise my voice to get our server's attention. Thankfully, the manager accommodated and apologized to my friend for the terrible dining experience by removing the full priced white wines. The reason why I gave 2 stars instead of a 1 star was the fact that the service staff accommodated my request to order the wagyu Mille feuille, which was not on their regular menu. Outside of the dumplings, this dish was my 2nd favorite part of the meal. It is disappointing to see that a restaurant with a pretty ambiance can get away with unimpressed food and poor service. Ah, Hutong: westernized Chinese fusion for rich people willing to pay Michelin prices. I'm glad I was treated to a birthday dinner here, as our meal was kind of all over the place. The good: - Lobster Squid-ink Dumplings: Plump, juicy and satisfying - Wagyu Beef Millefeuille: Creative and gorgeous, but could've been seasoned more. The perfect shell made up for that. - Half of Roasted Peking Duck: Surprisingly decent. Crispy skin, succulent meat, and just the right amount of salt. - Bao & Soy Milk: Beautiful and joyous. The white sesame chantilly was a wonder, but the star of the show was the soy milk ice-cream. Why hasn't anyone thought to mass-market this flavor? The eh: - Truffle Shiitake & Wild Mushroom Bao: Incredibly creative design but just okay flavor. And no truffle whatsoever. - Golden Prawns: This would probably please salted egg lovers, but I don't like salted egg, so it just didn't jibe with me. These prawns were like the B-list celebrities of the seafood world--pleasant enough, but forgettable in the grand scheme of things. - Jade Tofu: Look, I appreciate the effort to make tofu exciting, but this dish just fell flat. - Hutong Dan Dan Noodles: Ah, dan dan noodles, the ultimate comfort food. But at Hutong, they're more like a lukewarm embrace from that distant relative you only see at family gatherings. Very spicy, yes, but so oily that if you're not wearing black, you better pray there's no spillage. - Hong Kong Milk Tea Tiramisu for 2: A great idea in theory, and the two cups of HK milk tea were appreciated, but: 1) The tea was served cold. Never serve HK milk tea cold; 2) I couldn't taste any milk tea flavor in the cake itself. I give Hutong points for doing slightly better Chinese fusion than the likes of Tao and Buddakan, and also catering to a slightly more refined crowd than those meat markets (Bloomberg being across the street probably doesn't hurt). There are some appreciable creative touches, but the high price points just don't make me want to take a chance again--unless someone else is paying. Oh, and they told us it was Martini Hour, which meant BOGO martinis, yet charged us for my second one. Luckily, we were able to get it reversed--but pay attention to your bill. The steamed cod was delicious but the teeny portion was not enough to satisfy a child let alone an adult. Kung Pao Chicken is one of my favorite dishes, however this dish had a sweet coating to it which to me, is not authentic Kung Pao Chicken which is traditionally more spicy. We ordered an additional dish - the silky eggs topped with lobster and it was overly salty . Too bad for this, as I had hoped I would love the food so I could come back to enjoy a dinner here. I didn't like the first dish because chicken quality seems low and it's spicy. With other meat and chili oil appetizer, sometimes, the chili sauce has like a hint of sweetness, but this place it's just chili flavor only. The shrimp is pretty good. Even when it's covered in a thick sweet and sour sauce, there is still a light crisp. I also like the addition of cashew. Fried rice I think is not salty enough. If it is not for restaurant week, I probably would never go here because it's so expensive. Also it takes kinda long for the main dish to be brought out. read more

The $68 per person brunch special with +$25 add on for duck is a great deal for those of us who enjoy the crispy deliciousness of Peking duck. Soft shell crab in the lantern was great. Wontons were great. The ice cream dessert with chocolate ganache and sesame seeds was just ok, though people liked the other one which was a plum sorbet. Do not expect authentic dim sum like at Tim Ho Wan or Din Tai Fung or Golden Unicorn, etc; this is more interesting, cheffed-up fusion, so know that going in. Northern Chinese dishes. Service was really good. Jake, our server, was informative and attentive. The gender neutral bathrooms are very nice, with high quality towelettes. I've been wanting to try this spot for a while and am glad I finally did! The vibe is relaxed and laid-back, even though the restaurant is on the fancier side. The staff was very friendly and hospitable and answered my questions about the drinks and dishes. I was excited about the Year of the Dragon Cocktail but was unable to get it due to the size of my party (2 people). I did, however, try some other great drinks and even better food. We ordered the Chef's Fried Rice, Zhenjiang Pork Ribs, and (of course) the Roasted Peking Duck. The Fried Rice was well made and very flavorful and paired well with the Ribs and Duck. The Ribs were very tender and the meat seemed to fall off the bone. Of course, the Duck was the absolute winner! Served in two stages, it completely blew us away and we were surprised at how much food we got. Overall, everything was very tasty! For dessert, it was hard to pick one so we got the Treasure Bowl, which was worth it for the presentation alone! It was a variety of desserts and allowed us to try so many different ones at the same time. I highly recommend for anyone who can't choose between desserts. This is a really great spot with delicious food for decent prices. I do plan to revisit in the summer (hopefully with friends) so I can finally try the Year of the Dragon cocktail! read more

I would say a solid 3 stars for our experience. Food was pretty underwhelming and lacked some kinda oomph for every dish. 7 of us opted for the 3-course prix fixe menu but they didn't tell us the were out of dessert until the end and said we could order a la carte (but did bring by a chocolate cake slice for the inconvenience!) Service was a little scattered with a good few food mix ups and mishaps but oh well! My margarita was not great. The asparagus appetizer is.. insulting. lol they didn't even chop the fibrous parts of the stalks off. The end of each stalk was coated in a syrupy substance and sesame seeds while the rest was unseasoned. so odd. the seafood dumplings weren't good, although I did enjoy the vegetable one. Calamari was way too chewy. I enjoyed the fried rice, though some might say it's greasy. The cod pieces were perfectly cooked and I loved the (sweet) glaze on them but would prefer something more savory for an entree. I ordered the Childhood for dessert and it was delicious! Others mostly enjoyed the table-side tiramisu but thought it tasted like the ladyfingers were heavily soaked in brandy. They do seem to be known for their Peking duck but I'm pescatarian! They have a Happy Hour which could be fun as the space has more of a glam look. the prices are *outrageous* for the quality of food, portion size, and service (which seems to be the consensus here as well.) Originally, I was planning to order half duck but since only 2 people, I made a reservation for afternoon tea somewhere else. We ordered lobster squid ink dumplings, rose champagne shrimp dumplings, scallop & prawn garlic wontons, Hutong prawn rolls (must order), dry-aged beef xiao long bao, iberico pork dumplings, wagyu beef millefeuille, and kou shui chicken crispy dumplings. Every dim sum was so-so except the Hutong prawn roll that was worth ordering 2nd round. Service was slow, no one filled the water and even I requested lemon, nothing. It took more than 30 mins to serve the first dish, just a dim sum. In the end, when I needed to sign my receipt, they gave me a pen that had no ink. It's still pricy but I think you could go with a girlfriend and get the half duck, a dimsum platter and an app for around $100 and probably be full or at least decently satisfied. The duck was fantastic, which is their signature dish, and I would absolutely go back just to eat that. The dimsum platter was also a favorite and very tasty. The service was great and our waiter was very attentive, giving his recommendations and making sure everyone had the correct drinks. The only reason I am giving 4 stars is because some dishes were just good, and I did expect them to be great because the duck was great and because the atmosphere was so upscale. The broccoli spears and the eggplant were both good but they were just good. Same with the shrimp dish (the one that's more sweet than spicy).
